Whoa! This is the first time I heard this song, and I thought I knew most of Harry's music. Thanks for introducing this song to us.
Me too !!!!!
Same!
I'm a long time fan, never heard this one, Please check out shooting star, I'm a new sub . Thanx
My parents had this album when I was a little kid, I know every song on it by heart. Every song on this album is a great one. Every song of Harry's tells a great story!
You will love “A better place to be” and “Mr Tanner”
The live versions of these two songs from the album Harry Chapin - Greatest Stories Live (available on youtube!) are my favorites! 👍
I thought I knew all of his songs. I have seen him in concert many, many times and I do not know this song. Thank you for it.
Santa
My Favorite of his is Corey’s Coming. Have a hard time not shedding tears every time I hear it.
Agreed!
I've been a fan since the 80's...know about 40 of his songs & never heard this one. The deep end of the pool for sure!
Couple Other Harry Chapin songs you might love:
Mr Tanner
Flowers are Red
I can't believe you did this one. "Sniper" is another of Chapin's real-life story songs. Excellent, but pretty deep.
Excellent indeed.
Been pushing for this since she did Cats in the Cradle.
Hadn't heard this before but Harry Chapin certainly did an excellent job of telling this tragic story. And unfortunately, a lot of guys came home messed up. During the Vietnam war I was in college waiting for my number to be called. Although I didn't get the call, I had several friends who did. And what they experienced and witnessed was not pretty. The expression 'War is Hell' is so true.
In the beginning of the song he said he was eating pant chips from the ceiling. Back before 1978 paint had lead in it. No doubt as a baby he had lead poisoning which will make you crazy
I had the great fortune of hearing Harry Chapin perform this song live at one of the best concerts I have ever attended back in 1979. His performance of The Bummer that night was absolutely soul altering. While I've always loved most of his songs, that night The Bummer became my favorite Chapin song of all. I really enjoyed your reaction and I thought your analysis was spot on. Well done!
Britt, he's the greatest lyrical storyteller in rock history. Thank you for bringing Harry's music to your audience. In regards to the language used he was writing for his time. It was 1975 and he was talking about a war that just ended. The racial terms used were not words of beauty but they were the words we heard during the 60's and 70's. Your analysis and reaction to "Bummer," is something Harry would have loved to hear. Kudos to you.
Fayette is Fayetteville, NC - the town right outside Fort Liberty (formerly, Fort Bragg) - home of the 82nd Airborne Division.
I don't think I ever heard another person who gets Harry's lyrical genius as much as me until you Britt. And I have been listening to him for 50 years.
Harry Chapin, Roger Waters, and Bob Dylan are my favorite lyricists.
Really sad that he passed away at 23 or 24. 😢
His Medal of Honor citation reads as follows:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist 5 Johnson, a tank driver with Company B, was a member of a reaction force moving to aid other elements of his platoon, which was in heavy contact with a battalion size North Vietnamese force. Specialist Johnson's tank, upon reaching the point of contact, threw a track and became immobilized. Realizing that he could do no more as a driver, he climbed out of the vehicle, armed only with a .45 caliber pistol. Despite intense hostile fire, Specialist Johnson killed several enemy soldiers before he had expended his ammunition. Returning to his tank through a heavy volume of antitank rocket, small arms and automatic weapons fire, he obtained a sub-machine gun with which to continue his fight against the advancing enemy. Armed with this weapon, Specialist Johnson again braved deadly enemy fire to return to the center of the ambush site where he courageously eliminated more of the determined foe. Engaged in extremely close combat when the last of his ammunition was expended, he killed an enemy soldier with the stock end of his submachine gun. Now weaponless, Specialist Johnson ignored the enemy fire around him, climbed into his platoon sergeant's tank, extricated a wounded crewmember and carried him to an armored personnel carrier. He then returned to the same tank and assisted in firing the main gun until it jammed. In a magnificent display of courage, Specialist Johnson exited the tank and again armed only with a .45 caliber pistol, he engaged several North Vietnamese troops in close proximity to the vehicle. Fighting his way through devastating fire and remounting his own immobilized tank, he remained fully exposed to the enemy as he bravely and skillfully engaged them with the tank's externally-mounted .50 caliber machine gun; where he remained until the situation was brought under control. Specialist Johnson's profound concern for his fellow soldiers, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
it was the day before his 24th birthday 🙁
Been a fan of Chapin since the seventies. First time hearing this song. Thanks for the review.
You are unbelievably good at interpreting and understanding Harry's songs. You got this one perfectly. Viet Nam was hell, and when a man was taught to kill, he was very good at it, but when he returned, the public did not honor him the way they should have. Bummer is a true story, and so is Mr. Tanner, which you absolutely have to hear. Get the version of Mr. Tanner from Harry's last concert in Hamilton Ontario, where he and Big John Wallace tell the story through song. It is the absolute best, and you will love it.
Life is rough; but listen to "A better place to be" by Harry. AND the "SEQUEL" to TAXI is great, with a twist in the lives of Harry and Sue after 10 years gone by. very good stories from Harry ***
Harry had many songs that were based upon real life events, including "Sniper" and "Mr. Tanner". There were many great singer/songwriter/storytellers during the time that Harry was with us, but when Harry performed his songs, especially in concert, he had a way that made people think about how they treated and reacted to others. In this song, as well as Sniper, he presented a character that people were horrified by and gave them a human side.
A similar no-holds-barred song about a tragic military figure from a minority group in the USA is "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" by Johnny Cash.
Great song, written by Townes Van Zandt.
Along with this song, the songs Sniper and What Made America Famous are songs you should also check out. What Made America Famous was turned into a play that ran for a short time off broadway, and Sniper is another true story of a damaged man who turned his anger and angst against humanity..
BTW, when he passed a senator Alan Cranston reference the song What Made America Famous in his eulogy of him. Harry was a bigger than life individual that touched so many in the 70s that it is the height of tragedy that so few people know about him today.
There have been a lot of great story tellers over the years, but Harry is my favorite. Every song he sang was a masterclass in telling a story. Harry, you are missed so very much.
I think you understand Harry now. I really appreciate your appreciation. Harry cared about people.
Of all his songs - this touched me the most.
True story. Tragic PTSD.
" Bummer " my high school nick name .
Wow you reacted to this one this is one of Harry's best you should watch a documentary they made of Harry back in 2020 40 years after he died it is free on the Internet it is called when in doubt do something and find out who Harry was he was an amazing citizen you will like him even more check it out
A life free of options. Paul Hardcastle made a kind of dance track named "19" where he described what the situation was with the young kids going to Vietnam. "Apolcalypse Now" from F.F. Coppola shows some aspects of this crazy war situation. In Vietman many people used a lot of Heroin there and the US Military looked away - pretty incompetently …
Wow, you found one of the more obscure Harry titles. You really can't go wrong with any song since the art is in the telling.
Thank you so much for reacting to this song. Harry was becoming popular when I was in college. I saw him live twice in concert - once on the 3rd row middle. He was such a wonderful storyteller and caring person. His emotion came through so strongly regardless of what it was. Please continue to react to his work - it's amazing.
Let me tell you why im a brand new sub, 1 ,harry chapin, ive been a fan it seems for a long time, and never heard this one,2, your take on it was lovely and to the point ,you had the right stuff to say about it,3 ,none of us will see a reference to "hello darlin", a nice dolly pardon t shirt, and a beautiful young, articulate black woman, all in the same shot, stay safe and much success to you, thanx
Absolute kudos to you Britt for covering this track. I really can’t believe you took it on. Harry is the greatest storyteller ever. Please react to Sniper, for me the absolute pinnacle of Harry’s greatness. Just fantastic this reaction.
Sniper is a masterpiece!
@@jasonurroz570 Sniper is good, but Mr. Tanner is the very best of all!!!
@@Pronzini1 I sing Big John's part every time. It's amazing!
My dad listened to Chapin when I was growing up, but I somehow missed this one! I would love to see your reaction to his songs, "Sniper", "Mr. Tanner", and "The Night That Made America Famous"! You've got a great way of interracting with the lyrics, and Harry's such a great, poetic storyteller!
Please do sniper next, live from soundstage. It’s the most incredible live performance you will ever see.
Wow, I've just been catching up on your reactions and was enjoying hearing your reactions to other Harry Chapin songs, and was wondering why this song wasn't being requested more in the comments. I remember hearing this song for the first time in high school when my brother played a tape of the album it was on while driving to meet up with the family on our annual camping vacation (circa 1978 or so). I remember it just gripping me as something you just had to pay attention to, and at the end turning to my brother to say 'what was THAT?'! He just kind of laughed and nodded. Totally unexpected from a Harry Chapin song, and cementing his place as the greatest story teller. Great reaction, took me back to my first time hearing it.
I'm pretty sure Johnson is buried in Arlington, this may be the area where Harry took a little poetic license.
I love this reaction!!! One of the greatest songs ever written!
Big Harry fan here, I enjoy listening to his songs that I'v only heard here and there. Looking forward to you listening his top hits.
You did it!!! I can't believe it worked. THANK YOU! Excellent reaction (as always). I thought you might enjoy the storytelling, along with the wonderful musical arrangement.
I did!
You did an excellent job reacting to this tragic but mesmerizing song.
I always get another valuable perspective from your thoughtfully chosen words. .
The medal of honor is the highest award a service member can receive..
Very rarely are they awarded and often posthumously
So so glad you are listening to Harry. One of my all time favorites.
It's so good!
The music I'm hearing at the beginning of this video is making me feel secret spy, like 007 James Bond type vibes! I was also moving my shoulders back & forth. This is another great reaction Britt! Harry did an excellent job in the way he chose this intriguing musical arrangement for this sad story. I do not think I've ever heard such an amazing, creative, well composed song, & then to have all these different sounds from all the instruments it is total genius & absolutely phenomenal!!!
I 100% agree with you about the music fitting this story line. "Sniper" is equally amazing in its musical arrangement.
So cool!
Beyond Awesome Master Chapin is 🙏 is it possible that Johnson believed it, that he would be better off dead; because he thought he was no good; because thats all he heard his whole life; and yet he couldn't unlive himself so he did that suicide by cop; and he was smiling because it was over, i wonder 🙏
Harry's songs were profound lessons in life that drew on every human emotion.
"A Better Place to Be" is a poignant, bittersweet story of a lonely man who finally may have found
the love he yearned for, in a way he could never have foreseen.
I think you will love it.
You will love Flowers are Red.
You MUST listen to "Cat's In The Cradle".
It's the only title that brings a giant of 6ft6in and 240 lb down to tears.
Since you liked James Taylor and Harry Chapin you should check out.
"Jim Croce " he is a mix of the two with songs like "Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "Time In A Bottle" o yeah
"Operator" he was about to be the biggest artist in the world the of course
"Plane Crash" like James Taylor he was a great acoustic guitarists..RIP Jim😢
Off of this album alone you need to react to The Rock, Dirt Gets Under The Fingernails, Babysitter, Tangled Up Puppet, and Dreams Go By.
Listen to this is a song that made America famous salt and pepper He's got a few in his repertoire at her great
*mentions that 'slants' is also racist. but it was the slang of the times. *loves Mr Tanner too. *And 'The Mayor of Candor'. *'The Shortest Story' is another one of those writing masterpieces.
Is it a true story? Largely so. Kind of. It would be most accurate to say that it is inspired by a true story.
Also, if you're wanting to go deep into Harry Chapin, I'd like to recommend "The Rock" and "Corey's Coming."
Great reaction, Britt! Wonderful story! FYI - a scythe was a curved, sharp bladed farm instrument used to manually cut hay and other high grasses. (Like a scythe sweeping through the grass) Not talking about a side-sweeping truck or street cleaner. lol
You MUST do "30 thousand pounds of bananas". Another true story.
Oh wow!
I thought I knew all of Harry's music, but I never heard this one. Dance Band on the Titanic is another great Chapin song.
Would you please react to Harry Chapin's song "30,000 pounds of bananas" pretty please.
The long version. There is a less than 6 minute version but it is a real tear jerker. He added some comidy to the end of the song to please his fans.
Two things, Britt. First, other songs of Harry’s that you might enjoy are Circle, Flowers are Red, and She Sings Her Songs Without Words. Some of these are a little more cerebral, less storytelling, but fantastic just the same.
Second, you might be interested to know that Harry’s brother Tom Chapin is a folk singer/songwriter as well. He mostly does family music, but has a few adult albums as well. If you want to check out his music I suggest This Pretty Planet (which NASA played to wake up the astronauts at one point!) or Family Tree from his family albums or Bob Marley’s Orphan Son or Martha&Oprah for his adult music. Have fun either way!
This is one of the coolest things you ever did, because of one comment, you don't believe in racism and I don't either, because if anyone doesn't understand that everyone wants the same thing in life, then they are the problem, it's not about skin or race it's about humanity, and this song although there were all kinds of warriors that saved lives and many never came home, why is it in war we are brothers but in life we resent the simple values because of color...
Beautiful reading. Two points. One, the story is not exactly that of Dwight Johnson as it happened - Chapin took some liberties, and you will notice that the song does not actually name its protagonist. Two, maybe the fact that he was "smiling as he lay in his blood" may have been a smile for having once done somethiing right, saved the lives of comrades, won the battle on his own. That is how it sounds to me.
Loved your expanded analysis
Please do Better Place to be, Taxi, Mr Tanner, Circle, Bananas, and the list goes on. Greatest story teller of my generation, and since!!!
To really get freaked out..try his song ‘Sniper”.. also based on actual tragic 😊 events in Austin TX
The names may be changed, but his stories are all based on something he read or something he did
Britt, I think you are now a lifelong lover of HC. He's very deep but then completely goofy. I'm still holding out for flowers are red btw lol
Ppl are also recommending Sniper and that's also a true event and a great song.
Harry, as you seem to have discovered is great. I'm telling ya, A Better Place to Be, or Mr. Tanner. Sniper for a walk on Harry's darker side.
So sad, but so true.
For those that dont know "Slants" is a derogatory term for the Vietnamese slanted eyes, in this case
Not just Vietnamese, all orientals. "Gooks" is another such term used in this song.
If you like Harry's music.....Listen to "A Better Place to Be" or "Mr Tanner" He was a storytelling genius
If you want your heart broken by him, "The Shortest Story" from Harry's Greatest Stories Live will do that.
Oh hell yeah!! It still stuns people today. It's why he and his friend - a Catholic Priest -set up his nonprofit that is still feeding people today.
Hey Britt there is someone trying to get people to go onto telegram after making a comment to “ talk” under the premise that it is you and I feel like it is just a money making scheme- just thought I would make you aware
Debridement is the removal of contamination from a wound it can be anything from dirt to scar tissue proper debridement is critical for burn injuries to prevent extreme and debilitating scars both external and internal. The society of the people of America went through absolutely zero debridement from the napalm attack of the war[Z] we have [survived]
Harry Chapin left us way too early at 2 day after his 38th birthday in a car crash. He devoted a lot of his time doing good work for humanity. He is as far from a racist as Saturn is to Earth. His anger and behaviour of course started as a baby where he didn't get treated as a baby should be loved. That lead to his childhood and the drugs with an adulthood that didn't know love and he was sent to VN, a hell of a place to be by his non-caring government.
Paint chips refer to lead in the paint at the time. This caused problems like lower IQ. And learning challenges.
Well done Britt
Britt, you should try the song "Arlington" by Trace Adkins. Do the official video. It makes a difference.
Only ever one Harry Chapin. Please listen to "A Better Place to Be".
I don't think there is a bad Harry Chapin song. Tangled up puppet,Old college Avenue, Flowers are red, also if you like Harry you should check out Jim Croce, Operator. Working at the car wash blue's, time in a bottle so many more from bith artists.
Listen to flowers are red by Harry!
"The Shortest Story" - it may break you.
The other racism is calling the Viet Cong soldiers "slants" a derogatory name based on their Asian eyes.
You need to listen to Sniper by Harry Chapin.
Love your reactions...you should check out Summer Paradise by Simple Plan featuring Sean Paul
Being a Vietnam Vet I view this song as a hasty generalization of vet's. From the antiwar movement! it gives vets a bad name.!!🤨
React to the song Ira Hayes by Johnny Cash. Its another tragic story of a soldier's return to everyday life
React to Taxi & The Sequel to Taxi
You need to listen to Mr. Tanner by Harry
Now listen to Sniper and Mr. Tanner by Harry Chapin.
I am really not familiar with Harry's music whatsoever. I've only ever heard "Taxi" & "Cats in the Cradle".
He is a really great storyteller though.
Cool reaction, Britt!
I love this song. I am surprised you reacted to it because it does not quite fit into your 6 min. time limit.
Could you react to the band Mercy Mode, and their song Lost In You?
I think it was the "slant" reference that might be construed as racist?
Sniper. I prefer the studio version.
Weird that you’re picking up on him referring to himself as black but that’s clearly not the loaded words. It’s the Asian slurs that honestly might be dated enough that they’re sliding under the radar.
I am glad they put the warning ahead of time because some people get triggered by the somg having the slang they had during the 60s and in the war the Vietnamese referred to those nasty names as well and unfortumately the military at times of war dehumanize the enemy it deprograms our normal response to killing someone. Sad thing is that he could not find 1 person in life to show him any kindness except for the medal of honor. Probably the first time someone treated him with respect and honor. You can tell by how the police treated him they were brought up to not respect the black community the served.
I believe the racism the person was talking about was when Harry said the "slants."
This would be derogatory to the Vietnamese because it's in reference to their eyes.
There's a lot of situations within the storyline that could be linked to racial and social issues: a black baby being born into a neglected life of poverty ... which leads to him becoming involved in drug using/dealing, pimping, and robberies ... being shipped off to fight a war (which, let's face it, a lot of front line soldiers are from black/brown or lower income populations) ... his Medal of Honor being questioned by the sergeant ... and not being buried in Arlington due to [potentially] the color of his skin and criminal activity.
@BrittReacts Hey Britt! (I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH BECAUSE I HAVE WATCHED MOST YOUR VIDEOS EVEN THE VIDEOS WITH MOVIES 🎥 TV 📺 SERIES I DO NOT LIKE MUCH OR EVER BEEN MADE AWARE OF.) I LOVE THE WAY YOU HAVE YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY TODAY YOUR HAIR AND YOUR TANK TOP AND YOUR EYES I WAS LOOKING AT YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, MOVING YOUR HANDS BEAUTIFUL AND IF YOU KNOW THIS MUCH UNDERSTAND SO MUCH WITH DOING YOUR BEST TO BE THE CLASS CLOWN AND YOU’RE NOT IN THE HISTORY AND ALL THESE OTHER NECESSARY SUBJECTS YOU GET I WONDER HOW MUCH YOU WOULD BE HAD YOU GIVEN YOURSELF MORE CONCERNED, EFFORT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE NECESSARY MORE WHAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOU COULD TEACH AND LEARN EVEN WHILE TEACHING BECAUSE YOU SEE LIFE IS A CLASSROOM TO US TO PICK UP ONES OF KNOWLEDGE THAT THE LORD IS PASSING DOWN EVERY DAY AND I’LL PASS DOWN GIVE US MORE BLESS US. I AM NOT TRYING TO SCHOOL BEHAVIOR AT ALL. I AM JUST WONDERING IN MY HEART HOW MUCH BETTER WOULD BE HOW MUCH MORE YOU WOULD BE IN AND PAID DEDICATED Enthusiastic pupil, AND HAVING FUN ALONG THE WAY. As far as the song and lyrics, they don’t make music like this anymore. It’s not allowed they want you to take six words six verses and put some so-called Melody behind it and repeat it over over for at least three minutes and that began back in the early 80s and excelled in the 90s, I’m not feeling so good today. Something that I want to need that I am praying about and there has been someone on here claiming to be THE OFFICIAL BRITTREACTS And wants to talk to me on telegram! I know you warned us of these fake accounts before long to draw you in for one reason or another, but I would love to talk with you directly and I am not asking to talk to you now I am just letting you knowso long ago was still going on and you are such a beautiful kind person. I love you for your video reactions and the way you are doing your analyzing of please give your mother a hug and kiss for me for the way she has raised you.
The racists part is him calling the Vietnamese slants.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwight_H._Johnson
I can't believe you did this one. "Sniper" is another of Chapin's real-life story songs. Excellent, but pretty deep.
Sniper is such an amazing way of telling the story it does. Harry’s live version of it allows you to see how much energy he put into the performance.
Been pushing for this since she did Cats in the Cradle.
I've never heard this! Thank you!!
@@JohnThorsson-yo4qq Loved Harry live on Soundstage from Chicago.
Mayor of Candor Lied is another favorite.
