Greatest story teller EVER! Sadly he left us waaaay too soon. While Taxi and Mr Tanner are more famous I think his saddest song is Flowers Are Red, a song about youth and lost innocence. On the darker side is Sniper, true life story of the U of Texas clock tower shooter adapted to a psych analysis. This is a rabbit hole worth exploring on your own if not here.

  • @pilesovinyl

Harry Chapin was a story teller in song like few if any others. Sniper is another very stirring song, about a real story (The Texas clock tower shootings in the 60s). Keep it up, bro, really becoming one of my favorite reaction channels.

Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. I had his "Greatest Stories Live" double album. "Cat's In The Cradle" is his most famous piece. "Taxi" was another big hit for Harry Chapin. Ten years later he followed it up with "Sequel" showing what happened to the 2 people in the story. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "Mail Order Annie", "They Call Her Easy", "I Wanna Learn A Love Song", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", "Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life". We lost him too young in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 38. He left a great legacy of music.

Funny story: This song is about a city in northern New York where I was born and raised. Had you picked the live recording to react to, you would have heard Mr. Chapin introduce the song by explaining what inspired it. In the process he made clear what he thought of my home town when he said, "I spent a week there one afternoon!" I didn't hold it against him. One of my all time favorite song lyrics “She left a six word letter…”. That simple juxtaposition instead of a six letter word a six word letter. There are several lines in Harry Chapin songs that have stuck with me since the 70s. “Reality poured from her face staining the floor”, “The critics were concise. It only took three lines, and no one could accuse them of being over kind.” Along with huge sections of his song There Only Was One Choice.

And, to put icing on the cake, a he was also a humanitarian on a grand scale. Over his professional career, he gave away over 50 percent of his income to fight hunger. His foundation continues to feed the poor in America and around the world. Though he died to young, the legacy he left us is that of compassion and love. I doubt few of today's artists will leave such a legacy behind. THANK YOU AGAIN for your great work!

  • @cnatview

On the Greatest Stories Live album he talks about this song being his favorite that he's ever written. He said he wrote it when he was in a small town in upstate New York called, Watertown, New York. He said he spent a week there one afternoon. Haha.....I was born and raised in Watertown, N.Y. and Harry came a couple of times to do concerts at the Community College here in town. People pretty much know what bar he's referencing as he just went to places like this small bar before or after his concerts, if he had time, to get inspirations for his songs. The town knows who the barkeep was and everything. The only difference from the song is that the little man at the bar didn't work at Miller's tool and die (though the town did have a factory that made tools and die...it wasn't named Miller's though) but the guy at the bar was a janitor at a local high school. I don't know what breeze drifted into Harry's mind when he was there but he "read" something and decided to write about it. Harry holds a special place in the fabric of our town's heart. Thank you so much for your reaction Harri. I enjoyed it. Take care and be well. Peace.
