He’s actually singing as three people which is why there’s such a chaotic feel to the song. He’s the narrator, the shooter & also the people reacting to news of the events. The raw emotion is why this is one of my favorite songs by him.

When you learn the meaning behind the song along with its performance it's truly one of the most epic songs ever recorded.

He was one of the best story tellers thru his music. But what is the most important is his charity. He did so much for hunger. His motto was (I do one for me, and the next for the other guy.) meaning of course the hungry. This humble man died in his Volkswagen from a semi truck accident. I liken this to the death of John Denver; another great artist tragically taken way too soon.

The way that Harry wrote this song, it comes from so many angles. There are parts of the song where people that knew the shooter describe what he was like, as if being interviewed after the fact. There are parts of the song that come from the sniper's wife and mother. Other parts, such as "I am a fighter thats not made a fist, I am a lover who's never been kissed, how do I know I exist?" comes from the sniper himself. The fact that nobody seems to care about him is the motovation behind the massacre. In a way, he wants to be famous, but he goes about it in a psychopathic way.

I saw him in 1975. He sat next to me when his brother was singing. I didn't know tho and I turned around and said.., this guy is really good too. Harry answered, yeah I think so too! One of the best days of my life.

This is based on the mid 60s shooting at the university of Texas back when mass shootings happened every 5 years instead of every 5 days it shocked everyone Harry is the king of story tellers if you like this one check out his song bummer

You're right about the facts. I was about to add in the sniper's real name, but I remembered not to give those maniacs any credit, that's what he wanted after all; and while his crimes should be remembered, his name shouldn't ever be held in any regard.
And yes, Bummer is another masterpiece. I'd like to hear someone cover that. I even wrote a paper on that song way back in school.

There's a documentary too. The guy was in the clock tower and had a 360 view of all the people walking. Horrible event.

This and Elton John “Ticking” predated “I Don’t Like Mondays”. Yeah it’s about a school shooting, and if you profile school shooters they kind of resemble what Harry is singing about here.

We are coming up on the 58th anniversary of the massacre at the Univerity of Texas at Austin. It was on August 1st, 1966 that, after stabbing both his mother and wife, Charles Joseph Whitman went to the University of Austin, Texas and climbed the clock tower and proceeded to start shooting at students that were out on the quad. He shot and killed 14 people and wounded 31! Although, this song is not 100% accurate, it is about this event.

This was definitely a mass 'event', based on an actual story of an event that took place. He examined the event through the eyes of the sniper, imagining what he might have been thinking when someone does something like that.
He is such an awesome story teller and yes, his live performances are even better than his records, which are great, but it becomes even more alive in concert. He left us way too soon, there are a lot of great 'stories' that he's sung, I would love to see you explore more of it, like Mail Order Annie, WOLD, A Better Place to Be and Mr Tanner for starters. Also, I know you and Lex did TAXI, he wrote a sequel to that story simply titled SEQUEL that I highly recommend also, it brings the story full circle to a satisfying conclusion.

You pretty much nailed it. This is a true story from a mass shooting on the campus of Texas A&M University in the 70s. The sniper killed his parents before going to the campus where he set up in the clock tower and was able to pick people off down below.
IMO, the song is a masterpiece. The musical score bounces around between different themes: the narration of the story; the music that corresponds with people "talking about the sniper" (presumably pieces of post event news clips); and then the sniper's reactions / thoughts. You sort of have to know which segment you're listening to so you can piece it together, since the narration gets interrupted by "the interviews" (i.e., his former teacher, the girl that dated him once, etc.), and then his responses / thoughts (i.e., questioning if he exists, him mom's nursing, etc.) before going back to the story.
In other versions of this song, Harry talks about how these "nobody's" who commit these random acts of violence are trying to leave their mark on the world and how the media gives them a platform... Thus they become somebody ("I was. I am. And now, I will be."). That concept carries over to the mass shooters of today.

The mass murder was in 1966 - 15 were killed (one pregnant so her unborn child also) and 31 were wounded in an hour and a half after stabbing and killing his mother and his wife.

Woah dude Charlie had a tumor in his head he told the doctors exactly where it was. As he got older he kept telling people he was getting bad feelings but no one cared. When he died the tumor was right where he told them. I'm sure you're just being edgy but the story with the song is A wild tale

My advice to the younger generation.. do not try to categorize older.. or even modern music.. into genres. Genres are the invention of the exploiters and marketers of musical talent. Genres don’t exist. Only music exists.
