For those that don’t know and want more context on the Zimmerman case, the guy chased unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin down a street and shot him. Literally no way to excuse it as anything other than a murder. In no way could that have been self defense.

As a white woman who grew up with very conservative racist parents in a deep red state, my take on this is the exact take I’m hearing from POC. My very first thought when I heard her apology was “why are you apologizing to, quote, anyone who was hurt?” Tell us specifically who you hurt. Apologize to black people, Mexican people, apologize to the specific communities you were hurting. Why was it bad to make that tweet about George Zimmerman? Who is he, who is Trayvon Martin, what actually happened? Please Brooke, take a moment to actually educate people about WHY what you said was bad, not just that it was bad. Take that moment to show us that education you’ve gotten in the past 10 years! I’m not in the business of talking over POC, nor is this apology even something that I should feel is for me or about me in any way. But I can’t help but to feel she was actually apologizing to ME more than she was to people like D’Angelo.

The Zimmerman thing really pisses me off. I was a young Republican also in south Central Texas entrenched in Fox News when Trayvon was murdered, but his death changed me. I was so angry at his murder and was absolutely baffled that no one else on the Republican side seemed to be angry. That was the beginning of me realizing how wrong I had been and changing for the better.

On the days following the murder of Trayvon Martin, students who were deliberately wearing hoodies (and carrying Skittles and AriZona iced tea) got dress code violations just kinda proving our point :/

That's the big part for me. She didn't delete the stuff because it was just a normalized phase to her. She didn't care if people would see it, she stated her opinions and moved on and never had any growth or self reflection on that part of her life. It was her thoughts and goodbye. I'm Hispanic and grew up in Arizona, I still vividly remember when I was in the 4th grade I went to say bye to my friend before fall break. She was one of the few white people in the school since it was a predominately hispanic area. Her dad got up in my face, pointed at me, and said "Don't you dare talk to my daughter again" and then just went to their car. I was left so confused. I thought I somehow upset her but now I realized that her dad was probably just racist. After break we acted like nothing happened, we were still friends until we left that school. I just stopped saying bye to her if I saw her dad.

Yup! Being Mexican in Arizona especially near the border these experiences were extremely common. Though people typically mistake me for Native American, I still saw and heard what people said/did to my visibly mexican mother.

As a white woman who is often in spaces within my career where inequity, bigotry, etc., are discussed and considered, I too have noticed this weird social ladder where white, “progressive” people in those rooms want to continually keep talking about the hows and whys of how non-harmful they have been and continue to be with respect to marginalized populations, when… at least the last time I checked… the entire purpose in those rooms is to be orienting ourselves to existing systemic inequities and the populations harmed by them. So, why are all the non-minorities in the room just trying to win some weird game of proving that they are actually the “best ally” or something? Wouldn’t spending your time and energy on *actually* just being an ally (rather than on trying to prove to other white ppl that you’re the most ally of all allies that have ever allied) be a far more fruitful way to *actually* be the type of support for marginalized populations that you’re so desperately trying to prove that you are?!?!
Worked in the deep South in social work and this was something I preached to so many. I am a white man, what other place do I have in this conversation than to listen and actively participate in the solutions brought to the table. My thoughts and ideas on POC lives is not what is important, because none of that could ever begin to be more important or impactful compared to their lived experience. This isnt to say white people should be complacent or "take a back seat" to reparations or social issues, but there is no situation where its okay for us to be the faces of these movements or claim that our issues caused by systemic racism would be anywhere near compared to POC. Like just sit, listen, and act in a way that the community has been actively stating isn't harmful.

Huge part of my process of arriving at anarchism is growing up in exclusively white academic liberal/progressive spaces and getting so fucking sick of the constant dog whistles and gaslighting and manipulation, and how they’d seemingly rather become more and more openly racist in doublethink, than just admit they were caught having never stopped being racist in the first place. So I stopped listening to them and bothering to take their word for it about communities they harm and just sat and listened to people of color instead. I let myself get angry and confused with myself instead of making people more marginalized than me deal with my white guilt and confusion and rage- if I had questions I looked for answers to them in a way that didn’t demand emotional labor be done for me. Brooke is a sort of conservative that could exist flawlessly in white liberal spaces. It’s shocking to them because she’s now masking her hatred the same ways they do.

People seem to think you can evolve like a pokemon from racist to not racist. Even if you come from a less racist household, you probably still have work to do. Everyone wants to feel like they overcame something, but in reality its about consistently doing the work.
The thing about her lying in her college essays is it shows that she was introduced to other forms of belief regarding racism and still decided to be racist. She had the opportunity to learn THEN when she was surrounded by people who didn’t all believe in the same conservative bigotry she was raised with and she still rejected it.
She definitely had the opportunity, and that probably signals that she most likely still has those beliefs, because when she was exposed to different beliefs, she still decided to reject it. But it's very important to take into consideration the fact that it isn't easy to leave behind everything you've known and been raised to believe, and if you have been raised with such unflinching bigotry, no matter what, you will believe you are right and everyone else is wrong, and that is incredibly hard to unpack and deprogram from. I don't mean to excuse her from her beliefs or actions whatsoever, it's just that your comment makes it sound a lot easier to give up on certain views you've held your whole life than it actually is.
What I took away from this is the reinforcement of: if you apologize BE SPECIFIC and address who you hurt directly. Also to listen to BIPOC instead of putting any energy to the people justifying her actions. Genuinely helpful, thanks D'Angelo.

the “your allowed to not have a opinion” is something I learned a few years ago and it can be so helpful in situations like this. Def don’t be apathetic to the issue in general, but It’s ok to not speak about an apology if you have absolutely nothing of value to add and no place to accept it or not. This was a remarkably refreshing video-as a black person it was great to see white person's hurt feelings over being caught out as racist ..NOT being centered. I am needing to protect my peace and mental well being more every day, so not caring about this lady one way or the other - feels healthy.
As a white person (yeah yeah I know hear me out), this is also refreshing, because algorithms push content-original, commentary, or tertiary meta-commentary; plus news which is overwhelmingly written by and for white audiences-towards "majority" perspectives. It's inescapable. People who want to see non-white perspectives, commentary from someone outside one's social sphere or the sphere of the catalyst (majority/rich/famous) figure... they have to actually go out of their way to find minority writers whose content happens to be *qualitatively superior* to the algorithmic schlock and idk what to say, it's absurd and awful.
These apologies are all very boring because there’s never any introspection, it’s always the fault of a family member or growing up in an impoverished area. Not once have they told the truth and just flat out said that they jumped on the bandwagon because it was trendy to punch down at minorities, and they thought they could get away with it.
This is such a pure example of the difference between "not racist" and being "anti-racist." It is not enough to simply decide to stop being actively racist or saying racist things. Anti-racism means that you do the hard work of understanding your own biases, owning up to them, and interrupting racism when you see it. Brooke decided that being "not racist anymore" was enough... until her history bit her in the ass. That simply isn't enough, and I think that's a big reason why it is so disappointing whenever folks like Brooke apologize for past behavior.

Like honestly, I said the n word when I was around 12 or something. I didnt know it was wrong or racist, honestly by that time I've never really saw any POC until we had POC neighbours. I taught my kids that an actual apology has three parts, in order for it to not be just you trying to feel better or avoid consequences 1. you take responsibility for what you did by identifying it specifically. you don't need to , and probably shouldn't, say why you did it. 2. you acknowledge how that likely affected them (the specific people you hurt/wronged, and you need to identify who that is), you can even say how you would feel in that circumstance. 3. you tell them specific actions you will be taking, and things you will be changing, to make sure that doesn't happen to them again. The bigger the hurt, the more drastic and serious the change needs to be. You do not even need to say the word "sorry". This is how you apologize with empathy.
I really like this! I feel like a lot of people weren't taught how to actually apologize. Whether they are "made" to apologize as a kid or whether they actually want to apologize and feel bad, it's important for kids (and anyone really) to learn about the harm they did or do and how that affects others, and how to apologize and not have it be a "sorry".

Honestly I relate as well. My parents are black AND racist. I grew up being forced to listen to glenn beck and fox news was on all the time. My parents both constantly acted like they were better than other black people because they were conservative republicans. I shudder to think the things I mindlessly repeated to others in my youth. But unlike brooke, this hurt me deeply
I had a very similar experience! I have one white parent and one Mexican parent, and both are pretty racist. My Mexican parent LOVES to act like she's better than other Mexicans. Even though she is literally an immigrant, she will talk racist shit about other immigrants and act like she's somehow different, without seeing that their motivations for coming to the US are EXACTLY the same. Both parents are strong conservative Republicans (and extremely religious, because of course they are). I'm so grateful that I could see the flaws in that kind of thinking as an adult and no longer believe any of those ideas, but man, I am not proud of how I saw the world as a kid.
Yea I had a lot of colorism instilled in me as a mixed Mexican person, but I saw the consequences of my actions pretty immediately. I’m glad my friends when I was younger called me out because I learned it was wrong and I think I’m a better person for it. And apologizing helped me and the people I affected move on. I think we all have to unlearn harmful things no matter what we look like. It’s just that mocking a victim of a violent hate crime seems obvious as a no no.
honestly, i’m thankful my parents and family weren’t racist and anti-Black (coming from a Black american family) BUT i did live in an area where so many other Black people my age were, especially around 2016. and i always thought it was in an attempt to fit into the white majority in a rural Southern county.
What also bothered me was that she commented on a Reddit thread about the situation (on r/lainfluencersnark) about a year ago. Yet still didn't address it everywhere until it was like unignorable. So there was a period of time where she was aware people knew, but didn't really do anything. Maybe she should've taken accountability for the tweets on all her platforms when it first came to light, and owned up to those things then.
I might be wrong but didn't these tweets get out years ago and she apologized for it then as well? I'm not sure tho but I think I saw videos circulating from 4-5 years ago where she spoke about these tweets. Edit: With this I don't mean that those apologies were good or it shouldn't have came out the way it did. I think it's good that she's finally "exposed" in mainstream media and hope that people will actually hold her accountable this time. Just wanted to clarify that this has been going on far longer than most people are aware of (and she still hasn't really taken accountability).

I haven't experienced it, luckily I've never been in super conservative areas, or at least the people in conservatives areas are open and kind and more progressive themselves but even minor things like teaching kids that not being Christian or religious is okay is a sensitive topic because you have to really figure out how to express that to them without their parents getting angry or disagreeing, if that makes sense

If someone was in a debate about cats or dogs and they hated dogs, theyre not going to admit that they only ever had cats as pets because it makes them seem less reliable. Honestly, I have no sympathy for white people who grew up in the south and blindly followed the racist, misogynist, and homophobic rhetoric of conservative southerners. I knew so many people who grew up in conservative families and realized it was wrong by simply talking to people of color and other minorities. It wasn't that hard to believe racism was wrong in the 2000s, believe it or not. The people who followed that conservative line did so by choosing not to ever step out of the lines, and it always felt like they just enjoyed being "on top." People who refused to learn as kids/teens require a lot more work and way more scrutiny when they decide to change as an adult.
The problem is teenagers are old enough to know right from wrong. I grew up with a racist dad and his wife, I have never ever said or thought a single racist word in my life. I’m from Mississippi. I grew up in a household with an extremely racist Mexican dad. He was racist against other Hispanic people(even other Mexicans) and black people. I still knew that racism was bad. Having a racist household isn’t an excuse imo because at the end of the day there are plenty of people who understand not to hate others during childhood and not as a GROWN woman.
Some people are, genuinely, more simple souls. Not stupid, but simple. They struggle to form their own ideas. What they're truly after is feeling like they belong in their tribe and general social acceptance, because that's what makes them feel safe and happy. That's why there's been so much societal backsliding when it comes to saying the r word and fatphobia for example - the people who briefly stopped being openly hateful towards disabled and fat people, were only doing so to feel that social acceptance from their peers again. They struggle to actually conceptualise anyone a little different from them as complete human beings with rich inner lives, worthy of dignity and kindness. I have zero doubt someone like Brooke, who is upset because she's receiving backlash and not because she caused harm to poc, would go back to being hateful if she went back to living in an insular environment where she was praised and found funny for her edgy and hateful language. There's no underpinning of personal morals or values there, she will do whatever gets her the most love and acceptance from her peers. They're saying she said something bad, so it's bad. If they started saying it's okay again, she will think it's okay again.

i was also younger than her (10) and, as a Black american, that was the first time i felt actual fear about being a Black girl. the first time i was worried for myself and my family (especially my dad and male cousins). so while she was joking about it, i was EVEN younger and deeply disturbed by the situation. and was in actual fear for our safety as Black people in America. and that fear never went away, of course, because even this year we have similar incidences happening

I grew up in the most “liberal” city in Texas and when I moved to NYC I didn’t realize how many micro-racist things I said until being one of the only white folks in my neighborhood. Nothing will ever make me sadder than how poc children have to mature and understand the world faster because of the state of the world. I remember growing up and hearing classmates and politicians repeat terrible rhetoric about Mexicans. Even growing up and seeing the hate crimes affected me so much and gave me so much anxiety on a day to day basis. I hope one day the world will be kinder to the poc children so they don’t have to endure that.

As a white woman who grew up with very conservative racist parents in a deep red state, my take on this is the exact take I’m hearing from POC. My very first thought when I heard her apology was “why are you apologizing to, quote, anyone who was hurt?” Tell us specifically who you hurt. Apologize to black people, Mexican people, apologize to the specific communities you were hurting. Why was it bad to make that tweet about George Zimmerman? Who is he, who is Trayvon Martin, what actually happened? Please Brooke, take a moment to actually educate people about WHY what you said was bad, not just that it was bad. Take that moment to show us that education you’ve gotten in the past 10 years!

The Zimmerman thing really pisses me off. I was a young Republican also in south Central Texas entrenched in Fox News when Trayvon was murdered, but his death changed me. I was so angry at his murder and was absolutely baffled that no one else on the Republican side seemed to be angry. That was the beginning of me realizing how wrong I had been and changing for the better.

That's the big part for me. She didn't delete the stuff because it was just a normalized phase to her. My thought in Tana saying “we grew up bad” is that she ended up a millionaire very literally from lying about her life. She didn’t learn honesty until she had enough money to not need to be a liar anymore…I don’t know if that made sense but I can’t take her seriously specifically because of it.
I'm Hispanic and grew up in Arizona, I still vividly remember when I was in the 4th grade I went to say bye to my friend before fall break. She was one of the few white people in the school since it was a predominately hispanic area. Her dad got up in my face, pointed at me, and said "Don't you dare talk to my daughter again" and then just went to their car. I was left so confused. I thought I somehow upset her but now I realized that her dad was probably just racist. After break we acted like nothing happened, we were still friends until we left that school. I just stopped saying bye to her if I saw her dad.

As a white woman who is often in spaces within my career where inequity, bigotry, etc., are discussed and considered, I too have noticed this weird social ladder where white, “progressive” people in those rooms want to continually keep talking about the hows and whys of how non-harmful they have been and continue to be with respect to marginalized populations, when… at least the last time I checked… the entire purpose in those rooms is to be orienting ourselves to existing systemic inequities and the populations harmed by them. So, why are all the non-minorities in the room just trying to win some weird game of proving that they are actually the “best ally” or something?
Wouldn’t spending your time and energy on *actually* just being an ally (rather than on trying to prove to other white ppl that you’re the most ally of all allies that have ever allied) be a far more fruitful way to *actually* be the type of support for marginalized populations that you’re so desperately trying to prove that you are?!?!
Worked in the deep South in social work and this was something I preached to so many. I am a white man, what other place do I have in this conversation than to listen and actively participate in the solutions brought to the table. My thoughts and ideas on POC lives is not what is important, because none of that could ever begin to be more important or impactful compared to their lived experience. This isnt to say white people should be complacent or "take a back seat" to reparations or social issues, but there is no situation where its okay for us to be the faces of these movements or claim that our issues caused by systemic racism would be anywhere near compared to POC. Like just sit, listen, and act in a way that the community has been actively stating isn't harmful.

Huge part of my process of arriving at anarchism is growing up in exclusively white academic liberal/progressive spaces and getting so fucking sick of the constant dog whistles and gaslighting and manipulation, and how they’d seemingly rather become more and more openly racist in doublethink, than just admit they were caught having never stopped being racist in the first place.
So I stopped listening to them and bothering to take their word for it about communities they harm and just sat and listened to people of color instead. I let myself get angry and confused with myself instead of making people more marginalized than me deal with my white guilt and confusion and rage- if I had questions I looked for answers to them in a way that didn’t demand emotional labor be done for me.
Brooke is a sort of conservative that could exist flawlessly in white liberal spaces. It’s shocking to them because she’s now masking her hatred the same ways they do.

Eventually she started a new channel and is fully honest but it left the worst taste in my mouth knowing her original audience was very much liberal, lgbtq, etc.

People seem to think you can evolve like a pokemon from racist to not racist. Even if you come from a less racist household, you probably still have work to do. Everyone wants to feel like they overcame something, but in reality its about consistently doing the work.
The thing about her lying in her college essays is it shows that she was introduced to other forms of belief regarding racism and still decided to be racist. She had the opportunity to learn THEN when she was surrounded by people who didn’t all believe in the same conservative bigotry she was raised with and she still rejected it.

She definitely had the opportunity, and that probably signals that she most likely still has those beliefs, because when she was exposed to different beliefs, she still decided to reject it. But it's very important to take into consideration the fact that it isn't easy to leave behind everything you've known and been raised to believe, and if you have been raised with such unflinching bigotry, no matter what, you will believe you are right and everyone else is wrong, and that is incredibly hard to unpack and deprogram from.
I don't mean to excuse her from her beliefs or actions whatsoever, it's just that your comment makes it sound a lot easier to give up on certain views you've held your whole life than it actually is.

the “your allowed to not have a opinion” is something I learned a few years ago and it can be so helpful in situations like this. Def don’t be apathetic to the issue in general, but It’s ok to not speak about an apology if you have absolutely nothing of value to add and no place to accept it or not. This was a remarkably refreshing video-as a black person it was great to see white person's hurt feelings over being caught out as racist ..NOT being centered. I am needing to protect my peace and mental well being more every day, so not caring about this lady one way or the other - feels healthy.
As a white person (yeah yeah I know hear me out), this is also refreshing, because algorithms push content-original, commentary, or tertiary meta-commentary; plus news which is overwhelmingly written by and for white audiences-towards "majority" perspectives. It's inescapable.

This is such a pure example of the difference between "not racist" and being "anti-racist."
It is not enough to simply decide to stop being actively racist or saying racist things. Anti-racism means that you do the hard work of understanding your own biases, owning up to them, and interrupting racism when you see it. Brooke decided that being "not racist anymore" was enough... until her history bit her in the ass.
That simply isn't enough, and I think that's a big reason why it is so disappointing whenever folks like Brooke apologize for past behavior.

I taught my kids that an actual apology has three parts, in order for it to not be just you trying to feel better or avoid consequences
1. you take responsibility for what you did by identifying it specifically. you don't need to , and probably shouldn't, say why you did it.
2. you acknowledge how that likely affected them (the specific people you hurt/wronged, and you need to identify who that is), you can even say how you would feel in that circumstance.
3. you tell them specific actions you will be taking, and things you will be changing, to make sure that doesn't happen to them again. The bigger the hurt, the more drastic and serious the change needs to be.
You do not even need to say the word "sorry". This is how you apologize with empathy.
I really like this! I feel like a lot of people weren't taught how to actually apologize. Whether they are "made" to apologize as a kid or whether they actually want to apologize and feel bad, it's important for kids (and anyone really) to learn about the harm they did or do and how that affects others, and how to apologize and not have it be a "sorry".
I think apologies are scams. If I'm sorry, I'll like perform labor or give you money.

Honestly I relate as well. My parents are black AND racist. I grew up being forced to listen to glenn beck and fox news was on all the time. My parents both constantly acted like they were better than other black people because they were conservative republicans. I shudder to think the things I mindlessly repeated to others in my youth. I had a very similar experience! I have one white parent and one Mexican parent, and both are pretty racist. My Mexican parent LOVES to act like she's better than other Mexicans. Even though she is literally an immigrant, she will talk racist shit about other immigrants and act like she's somehow different, without seeing that their motivations for coming to the US are EXACTLY the same. Both parents are strong conservative Republicans (and extremely religious, because of course they are). I'm so grateful that I could see the flaws in that kind of thinking as an adult and no longer believe any of those ideas, but man, I am not proud of how I saw the world as a kid.
Yea I had a lot of colorism instilled in me as a mixed Mexican person, but I saw the consequences of my actions pretty immediately. I’m glad my friends when I was younger called me out because I learned it was wrong and I think I’m a better person for it. And apologizing helped me and the people I affected move on. I think we all have to unlearn harmful things no matter what we look like. It’s just that mocking a victim of a violent hate crime seems obvious as a no no.
Unfortunately anti-blackness and white supremacy are very prevalent in some black people. It’s really sad to see that level of self hatred.

So there was a period of time where she was aware people knew, but didn't really do anything. I might be wrong but didn't these tweets get out years ago and she apologized for it then as well? I'm not sure tho but I think I saw videos circulating from 4-5 years ago where she spoke about these tweets.
Edit: With this I don't mean that those apologies were good or it shouldn't have came out the way it did. I think it's good that she's finally "exposed" in mainstream media and hope that people will actually hold her accountable this time. Just wanted to clarify that this has been going on far longer than most people are aware of (and she still hasn't really taken accountability).
That coupled with the fact that she’s been liking pro-trump posts *this week after she apologized for her racism* make me struggle to believe the genuineness of the apology.

It really is. I haven't experienced it, luckily I've never been in super conservative areas, or at least the people in conservatives areas are open and kind and more progressive themselves but even minor things like teaching kids that not being Christian or religious is okay is a sensitive topic because you have to really figure out how to express that to them without their parents getting angry or disagreeing, if that makes sense

the fact that she never deleted those tweets really shows that they never held any sort of significance for her cuz to her they were just regular things she and her friends would say without barely noticing, and propbably forgot until those tweets in question resurfaced. me personally, i don't believe she "grew out" of racism, she just learnt how to hide it.
9:16 No you're so right, when someone gives a reason for their behavior it gives more evidence that they are changed. If someone was in a debate about cats or dogs and they hated dogs, theyre not going to admit that they only ever had cats as pets because it makes them seem less reliable. Same goes for apologies, if someone still believes in their problematic idealogy they arent going to want to discredit it to some simple thing, they've basically turned it into their personality. They'll just float around the apology without making any actually reflective observations.

I’ve never become famous on the internet and I have definitely gone through and double checked that I don’t have social media posts out there from my teenage years that no longer reflect my beliefs. And the posts I did delete were just cringey, not horribly offensive. So you’d think, if someone knew they had really bad stuff out there, they’d be even more likely to go delete it.

Honestly, I have no sympathy for white people who grew up in the south and blindly followed the racist, misogynist, and homophobic rhetoric of conservative southerners. I knew so many people who grew up in conservative families and realized it was wrong by simply talking to people of color and other minorities. It wasn't that hard to believe racism was wrong in the 2000s, believe it or not. The people who followed that conservative line did so by choosing not to ever step out of the lines, and it always felt like they just enjoyed being "on top." People who refused to learn as kids/teens require a lot more work and way more scrutiny when they decide to change as an adult.
The problem is teenagers are old enough to know right from wrong. I grew up with a racist dad and his wife, I have never ever said or thought a single racist word in my life. I just don’t see the point in being hateful towards people simply because they exist. My dad is also as conservative as you can get here in the south. So… there’s literally zero excuses for being a piece of shit lol

I’m not white, but I grew up learning racism toward blacks people in my community and I always knew it was wrong to treat people like they weren’t people just because they are black. ESPECIALLY if they are black because they have been effed by racism for hundreds of years and it still affects their everyday life to this day.

I’m from Mississippi. I grew up in a household with an extremely racist Mexican dad. He was racist against other Hispanic people(even other Mexicans) and black people. I still knew that racism was bad. Having a racist household isn’t an excuse imo because at the end of the day there are plenty of people who understand not to hate others during childhood and not as a GROWN woman.
Some people are, genuinely, more simple souls. Not stupid, but simple. They struggle to form their own ideas. What they're truly after is feeling like they belong in their tribe and general social acceptance, because that's what makes them feel safe and happy. That's why there's been so much societal backsliding when it comes to saying the r word and fatphobia for example - the people who briefly stopped being openly hateful towards disabled and fat people, were only doing so to feel that social acceptance from their peers again. They struggle to actually conceptualise anyone a little different from them as complete human beings with rich inner lives, worthy of dignity and kindness. I have zero doubt someone like Brooke, who is upset because she's receiving backlash and not because she caused harm to poc, would go back to being hateful if she went back to living in an insular environment where she was praised and found funny for her edgy and hateful language. There's no underpinning of personal morals or values there, she will do whatever gets her the most love and acceptance from her peers. They're saying she said something bad, so it's bad. If they started saying it's okay again, she will think it's okay again.
i grew up in a racist household also and even as a child, i always wondered why we had to hate these certain people. i never understood the ‘growing up in a racist place’ approach because it literally takes 2 braincells to question what’s being said and another 2 braincells to understand that it’s literally stupid. if im being honest, it probably takes more to be racist than not

i was also younger than her (10) and, as a Black american, that was the first time i felt actual fear about being a Black girl. the first time i was worried for myself and my family (especially my dad and male cousins). so while she was joking about it, i was EVEN younger and deeply disturbed by the situation. and was in actual fear for our safety as Black people in America. and that fear never went away, of course, because even this year we have similar incidences happening

I grew up in the most “liberal” city in Texas and when I moved to NYC I didn’t realize how many micro-racist things I said until being one of the only white folks in my neighborhood. Nothing will ever make me sadder than how poc children have to mature and understand the world faster because of the state of the world. I remember growing up and hearing classmates and politicians repeat terrible rhetoric about Mexicans. Even growing up and seeing the hate crimes affected me so much and gave me so much anxiety on a day to day basis. I hope one day the world will be kinder to the poc children so they don’t have to endure that.
The real test when this happens takes time. We have seen so many people apologize and then go on racist, sexist, etc. tirades later when people critiqued them online.
