Is the 911 GT3's wing totally pointless? | Porsche 911 GT3 Touring road review

  • The Porsche 911 GT3 has a massive rear wing. Or does it? Now there is a new 911 GT3 Touring, which comes without the rear wing, but it turns out with very few other options. Does it render the standard GT3 completely pointless? Or does the rear wing still matter?

Winged and manual. Its the roadable version of the GT3 Cup. It should look like it. I can understand the "wolf in sheeps clothing" appeal of the Touring so mine will be Gentian blue.

There are other differences. The lower front bumper is painted body colored on the touring, black on GT3. The rear deck lid on the GT3 has a small duck tail, not present on touring. The touring has no alcantara steering wheel. These are pretty big things that mattered to me when choosing between them.

i have a 992 GT3 with the wing. I drive it on the track often, but i like the look as well. The Touring version has a wing that deploys at speed and serves a purpose. I've taken off the wing and driven it a bit but I consider it unwise since the car was designed to need a wing at higher speeds. this is just my opinion and there are clearly many other opinions

  • @AbandonedRaven

It does look slightly better without it, one of the few times I think that in regards to the GT3 version. Most modern Porches in general look better with a wing I think, but that’s just me. Edit: And the shot at about 3:55 was amazing.

@@bigmacdaddy1234 The “Um no” is a bit unnecessary when I said “but that’s just me”. In my opinion, I like them on modern Porsches, but if you don’t that’s fine too. I even agree with you with this specific car, but not with cars like the 2016 GT3 RS or the 2018 GT2 RS for instance. But again, that’s just my opinion.

I bought my GT3s to go to the track and I go to the track. At Fontana in California you can tell if the car is unbalanced aerodynamically. The 3 NEEDS the wing. No wing not a 3. I have a 991.2 now but one time I tore my little front spoiler on the 996 GT3 and I went back on the track without it. It was unbalanced over about 120mph without the front lip. The 3 needs it’s spoilers

Porsche 911s have recently become a measuring stick to one’s ego as opposed to their use and driving capabilities. Get past the wallet flexing and ego stroking and one will find every 911 is a weapon of speed from a base 911 to a 911TT. It’s just a matter of which weapon of speed that priorities your use and personal needs. Even the base 911 is 70% more car than even the spirited owner can use on the open roads. They are THE most rewarding performance car one can own. 30 years of 911 ownership as well as others in the top tier speaking. GT3 were designed purely as a track car instead of the ego flexing they’re being used today at the local Starbucks or cars and coffee.
