As you say cleanliness is often overlooked. Use nitrile gloves so you don’t carry dirt and grease into the car’s cabin after performing work. A fender apron and seat covers are also great ideas. It’s easy to drop a tool against a customer’s car and cause damage or leave greasy marks on the seats. A few extra moments of care can save a big headache later.
It’s nice to be a detail shop that also does repair and maintenance we hand wash almost everything after each service with the same care we treat our detail clients
Good vid. I'm not a mechanic although I do work on my own vehicles. I do thorough checks twice a year and more. Once in the Spring before Summer when I'm changing from snows to to road and again in the Fall when I change out from road to snows. Thanks to your vid, I now know to take it a step further and do more. If anything serious is wrong I let my mechanic know I have a problem, say with wheel shimmy, engine knocks, Check Engine lights etc.. Thanks for taking the time for the in depth inspection even knowing it's for mechanics and not necessarily DIY er's like myself. Cheers!
Make a cheak list and laminate it and have it on your clipboard or tool box with a whiteout marker. Makes it easier not to forget to cheak things out. Even though muscle memory gets messed up when stick or your mind gets distracted.
I tend to check the horn and the wiper washers as I'm pulling the vehicle around also. ...We also have a policy that if any warning lights are on other than what the vehicle is in service for, we don't pull it aroumd umtil the customer is informed.
Great video nothing worse than spending 15 min looking for a wheel lock that’s not there 🤣 this was a great video for cross selling products. Thanks for sharing brother.. Jay
I might have missed it but I dont think the oil was checked prior to the change. Personally I always tug on stuff during under car inspections so you catch links and such before theyre broken or falling off. Other than that its all pretty standard.
Sweet inspection video!! When I hop in , I check wipers and tire pressure and a.c and turn signals before I enter the shop. I even take pictures before I hop on if it's a damaged video
Very good tips there never knew the shop rags could ever scratch the paint but now on I’m going to be using a microfiber towel to wipe off fingerprints
Only thing I would add is before you lift the car into the air, put the car into neutral, contingent on the work surface being level, if not put the car into park, keep it running, then chalk the rear wheel with a large piece of wood, then go back and put it then in neutral. Then turn the key off. This will make it so you can move the wheels in and out making it easier to access the brake system and struts or shocks.
Very important key when first Approaching the vehicle a visual especially if the vehicle requires some type of maintenance involving wheel removal they dont wanna get the vehicle to a lift and then in the air and then realize the vehicle has wheel locks ...then some or most customers sometimes don't even know weather or not they even have locks or own the vehicle and never knew they had a key or were the key is located...they definitely want to get a snap shot view sometimes if not most times customer have cluttered item in there trunk then a tech has to remove all the contents just to find it which becomes a waste of time when you are pressed for time....Great video
Pretty much exactly the same except for up selling or mentioning routine preventive services by miles, Coolant flush’s, trans fluid services etc when vehicle reaches manufacturers recommendation by miles
I like to put a brake peddle depressor and hit hazards and reverse with car off, koeo and check reverse and signals, aswell as brights and running lights if equipt.
At my shop anytime we're doing a full inspection it automatically comes with a tire rotation. Usually what I'll do is stop the vehicle halfway up, pull the tires off and do the wheel shake check. Then take her the rest of the way up, start the oil draining if it's getting a change, and do my undercar and brake checks, and put the tires where they're going to end up. Anything I find I'll let the writers know at this point. Then plug her back up and put the new filter on, stop her halfway back down and put the tires back on. Rest of the way down, torque the wheels, kick the lift arms back out (the arms being out from under the car is my little flag to myself that I torqued both wheels on that side) add oil/fluids and call it a day. I do like the open the cap idea, though. I may start incorporating that.
Good video and process, thanks. Only things I would add would be check spare tire if it has one and check engine air filter for another easy up sell. 🤙🏽
Gm and Chrysler: follow key on key off sequence hyundai and Mazda: just go into settings on the instrument cluster and hit reset mercedes and BMW: u need $500 scanner with oil reset update
I dont check the cabin filters, I reccomend to change it if I'm already reccomending changing the engine air filter, no time wasted unless I get to it and its clean.
Great video. Was this apart of a series? Love to see more videos like test drives, as a newer mechanic I sometime struggle with noises and knowing what to look for.
My car got rejected for emissions today but in 2 weeks my car will be 15 years old and doesn’t require inspection. Can I just wait to weeks bring it back without fixing it and get a passing sticker??
Thank you for the video, still a fairly young heavy diesel mechanic and been looking for some info on better ways to take care of my truck. I know it has some issues so I want to do a very thorough bumper to bumper inspection and make a solid list of what needs repaired or looked at in the near future. Since it needs an oil change I see it as the best time to do that. I understand that this is an old video but if you do see this could you maybe make a video how you would go about diagnosing a misfire? I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton with 6.0 has been fighting it for a while replaced spark plugs and wires worked for a bit and was back again did some more investigation and found I had a blow headgasket did that and stayed off for a while but it’s back again the code is P0300 random or multiple cylinder misfire and using a scan tool just about every cylinder is misfiring. Doesn’t run super rough to the point of shaking but you can definitely hear it in the exhaust
great video, just a couple of things I would add, always shake the car or truck on the rack a few inches off the ground, not just if they have weight in the bed or not, tail gate down what not, on cars and cross over's, shake the rear tires down too, to check for wheel bearing play or loose rear end parts, during the test drive, operate the wipers and washers to look for any streaking, blades can look good but wipe like chit, also, pay attention to your dash lights, if any are on during your test drive, note them on the repair order, also, do not top off the brake fluid, if its low, upsale a complete brake inspection, the point to the level sensor is to let the operator know that his brakes need inspected, adding fluid gives a false reading and may cause more damage than good.
He's not lying. I hate when my car is left with fingerprints, or the oil light isn't reset, and my seat is moved. I never complain but it's pretty annoying.
Great video only problem is testing a battery at the jump start posts is not a accurate test. They almost always fail the test at the jump posts I know from being a level 3 Chrysler tech that that better is in the fender well but I would not upsale off of the jump posts
@biggbulls799 100% Correct ...The only thing I hate about it being in the fender is that once you remove the wheel and the inner fender lining just to get it exposed and then you properly test it the way it should be done and then you get the actual reading and print out after doing all the work and then producing the customer the information....what sucks is when the customer turns around and decides they dont want the work done or complain that they could get it done for cheaper...my thoughts on it is they allow a Technician to expose were its located especially if they are not mechanically inclined
If you pause at 9:00, you see that hole right above the nut. I would be freaked. That looks to me the metal is corroding/falling off. That still looks ok? Will that hole grow bigger?
Looks like you hit most of everything for a GST...don't forget to shake down the rear wheels as well...especially on those high quality Mopar rear ends. I tend to see alot of guys miss this for some reason? The rear suspension components are very critical to an accurate 4 wheel alignment. Most (not all) vehicles nowadays require rear toe/camber adjustments and missing worn rear suspension components can end up smoking a brand new set of tires very quickly after they "align it" with wasted rearward upper control arms or the etc... Also difficult to quickly check batteries and filters...I will always make note of why I'm not checking something due to it's usually outside of the standard LOF time, so consult the service writer and explain this to the customer and see what they want to do and if extra time is needed. For example, if the cabin filter is buried behind the dash requiring removal of more than just the glove box to access it to properly check it. Great video and it's so very important to master the basics as a new tech!!! My comments additional items pointed out are intended for just that, a new tech trying to learn 😉👍 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RUSTBELT!
Yes exactly! Great points! Luckily at our dealership we have an alignment check also done in the service drive, that helps point anything out to us ahead of time👍🏻

I have been inspecting Pajero Sport 2018+ for purchase. I am surprised there is some underbody rust on every single vehicle. Exhaust pipe, tow point, sub frame , etc I have seen 6 already. Is this normal or is it just Mitsubishi? I have never owned or inspected a 4x4 SUV before this so may be just my ignorance. Thanks!
Lol, yep a lot of time they let the customer know that we have tall techs and that their seat will likely get moved but we will try and put it back as close as we can. That’s why I always like when they have memory seats.
Upsell upsell upsell. I'm so glad I don't fall for this shit anymore. I guess this is a thing geared toward auto "techs" . I know y'all gotta make money but damn. I have nothing but the upmost respect for true mechanics, even more now that I'm under my hood learning things. Thank you for the work y'all do
I wouldn't call any of those items up selling as they need to be changed. Up selling is BS fuel system cleaning, throttle body cleaning, brake pads at 50%, spark plugs that don't have many miles
Road test. All the young and inexperienced people won't do that. I teach them to do it. Listen to the car. I know, they're not a mechanic yet. I ask them "do you want to be"?
Up selling isn't selling a service that the customer doesn't need. Quite the contrary, it is selling more services to a customer based on a vehicle inspection. When the tech notices anything that is broken, or needs repair, they recommend it to the customer. It benefits both the customer AND the shop. Keep in mind, the tech will inform the customer even if they know the customer won't buy the service. It's the same as advertising a customized service based on what a customer DOES need, not what they don't. I don't know how many customers would have been upset if something was failing in their vehicle and the tech said nothing. We all need money, and most shops will look for things to recommend, however, I have not witnessed techs making stuff up simply to sell something. If they ever did, that isn't up selling it's fraud. One more thing, any time you go out to eat and your server asks if you want drinks, or dessert, or anytime a sales person asks if you want something you didn't intentionally buy, that's an upsell. Sales people will try to sell you something, that's their job.
Other than that I love the video. Also I would check the windows to see if there is any scratches that would indicate a frayed cable or just some thing that is loose in there

Lots of services don't do this: Ask the customer if they want back the old parts that were replaced.

Worth suggesting that we should make sure new oil filter and sump bung aren't leaking after re-filling oil 👌

check the trans dipstick whilst engine running, eh? thats interesting, i had never heard of that
