At time stamp 7:43..."SS Edward L. Ryerson is a steel-hulled American Great Lakes freighter that entered service in 1960. Built between April 1959 and January 1960 for the Inland Steel Company, she was the third of the thirteen so-called 730-class of lake freighters, each of which shared the unofficial title of "Queen of the Lakes", as a result of their record-breaking length. She was not only the last steam-powered freighter built on the lakes but also the last one that was not a self-unloader. Since 2009, she has been in long-term layup in Superior, Wisconsin. She is one of only two American-owned straight deck lake freighters, the other being John Sherwin, built in 1958."
That very ship could have hauled the iron ore that made the steel that went into the snowmover you just delivered.

WOW! What a video!!! I grew up in Duluth - great place to grow up. My folk's house was about 600 feet up the hill above the lake. I could lay on my bed, lean up on one elbow, look out my bedroom window, and see about 30 miles into Wisconsin. We had the same view from the dining room window.
    .
I've got to watch this video again - it brings back so many good memories.
    .
I left Duluth about 45 years ago to find work in Minneapolis. I really miss that view - I just didn't realize how unique it was.
    .
You gave me a warm chuckle when you mentioned the "wheel" on the back of the "ship". In the Duluth/Superior area, they are called lake boats or just boats. The ocean-going ones are called Salties.
    .
There has been a long push to make Duluth into a tourist town - but tourism only provides low-paying jobs. A lot of industry has left Duluth over the years because some unions have pushed too hard for too much money.
    .
There is also a lot of "old money" in Duluth that significantly runs the town with a strong polarization of "white-collar" (old money) East enders and "blue-collar" West enders.
    .
Duluth is a great place to visit - so much to do, so many things to see.

I`m from Duluth. Yes the hills! The can of worms project has the roads all mixed up. It screwed ya going up the hill. I would have told ya a different route. Little longer yet less hills. In the old days they used incline rail cars to go up and down the hill. Yes Duluth is a port city. shipping iron ore, wheat, coal, limestone and windmill parts. Superior is a port city too. Iron ore and a refinery town.

Thanks, Steve, for your USAF service and helping to keep US manufacturing jobs as a Professional Driver. I also miss some things about my 2 years, 9 months and 6 hours in the US Army, 1968-1971. I remember how I felt graduating from Basic Combat Training as an Expert M-14 Rifleman, in the top 5 of my Company. I remember "fixing" 6 months of incomplete paperwork and passing an IG Inspection with no "gigs" (negative findings). And the fragrance of pine trees, stepping off the Freedom Bird at McCord AFB after 1 year as a REMF in Vietnam.

a bit. 😉 Wednesday, the 27th of Dec. I was at a gas station down near Brookfield Wi. I'm not sure were he took off from but a F16 took off close by and shot straight up and over us and was gone! He was close enough and loud enough to rattle everything near by! Was very cool!! Lots of us got a kick out of that! Great Vlog!

Some many things to answer for you. Going up old Piedmont was probably quicker to get to the airport, to jump back on 53. The detour, would have taken you up 194/Missaba Ave. Going down Missaba, you could have taken I-35 to US 2. Taking 53 is quicker to thru Superior. You are correct on what leaves port. Duluth is mainly iron ore. Across from the ore docks on the Superior side is coal. Those go under the Aerial Lift Bridge on the Duluth side. Superior entery has an ore dock as well. You drove under the conveyor system on 53 near the truck stop. The ship you saw loading is what is known as a salty, and was loading grain for market overseas. Its nice to hear someone talk about our view, and the amazement it brings. Seeing it everyday, kind of forget how beautiful it is.

Not many people drive up to Duluth and there are few trucking videos of the city, which is a shame given how much industry and the canals formed both cities. I've never personally been to Duluth/Superior myself, but I have plenty of railroad videos from the area and a good thing to checkout is the Duluth Lift Bridge where you get to see the big steamer ships come into port along with international ships from all over the world.

Hey Steve, Great job and I love to watch air planes take off and land also. I worked at a local Big company here in Huntsville Alabama (till they closed). It was located next to the Huntsville Int airport. We were beside a runway. And my favorite thing todo was to watch them on my breaks. The President landed there and I got to watch that process. We were close to where the BIG Atlas cargo planes loaded and unloaded. Lots of planes. I would go in a little early just to watch. I would even take my wife and young daughters on the weekend to watch. Keep them wheels and camera rolling.

When you mentioned going down Messabi Avenue I said "Oh! You'll "like" Messabi Avenue - Jake brake the whole way down!" 435 foot drop in 1.7 miles - an average of 2.7 degrees or 4.8 feet per 100 feet. BTW, the Duluth Airport is 810 feet higher in elevation than where the Goodwill store is (which is just after you got off the Blatnik bridge).

I’ve traveled that route many times before. I was looking for the Maj. Richard Bong museum on the Superior side but must have missed it. WWII leading Ace, flying the P-38. Yes, those are steep roads. Thanks for your service, CMSgt USAF. 30+ years.

Enjoyed your vidio. I remember the hills in Duluth well. Only thing different I would have done was took a little detour over to Ashland, Wi. Best pizza on the planet at a place called Franklin's Pizza. Ordered a jumbo with the works! Wish I lived closer. Long drive from Frostproof, Fl. LOL

@FSC Trucking one of the issues with Duluth is their roads are at an angle relative to the main cardinal directions (North, South, West, and East). Whereas Superior uses a standard street grid system at right angles to primary cardinal directions.
That's what makes that area so difficult to navigate for out-of-towners. I'm an out-of-towner as well and I found Duluth difficult to navigate in comparison to Superior.

You can get your fill of take-offs and landings most days and some nights if you ever get back to the Hampton Roads area of Tidewater Virginia near Langley Air Force Base. This base has (among others) F-15, F-16, F-22, and a random B-1, not to mention various C-series transports.
