Why was Courage the Cowardly dog so scary?

I think it's fair to say that Courage the Cowardly Dog was the gateway into horror for most of us who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. And it is kinda weird, how this cartoon went above and beyond any other cartoon to scare the heck out of you, but the chances are that you only realized this after growing up. What made Courage the Cowardly dog so scary?
I wanna explore how Courage the Cowardly Dog took the art of simple cartoon comedy and mixed it with acutal horror, to create a masterpiece of a cartoon. The art of horror comedy is something that's hard to master, and I think there aren't many children's cartoon that have even attempted it, much less done it so well as Courage the Cowardly Dog.
So, was Courage the Cowardly dog too scary for a cartoon? For me personally, yes and no. Yes, because it used various techniques that are used in actual horror movies, like monster designs that are based on the uncanny valley, and creepy music that always elevated the horror experience. And no in the sense that it actually knew how to insert comedy in the right places to not let the horror take control of your minds. And that's why I genuninely think that Courage the Cowardly was a unique cartoon!

Courage was the scariest show i ever watched as a kid, kids nowadays are so lucky because their parents are making sure that they have a great childhood, my mom used to just look at the tv, make sure its animated then leave me watching happy tree friends, or courage the cowardly dog, literally any animated thing, i also didn't have restrictions on RUclips and that lead to a very traumatized child

I'm still amazed that the show kept the rating it did with how often they really pushed some elements. Courage's brand of horror and humor is amazing and one of a kind.

I know right! The fact that it stood out from a list of great cartoons in those times tells you all you want to know about how good this show was! We'll probably never see anything like this cartoon ever again!
