Something I like to say is that Splatoon 3 was the culmination of the series, so Splatoon 4 should be the rebirth. It really does need to be revolutionary for the franchise, with lots of new features and modes that will draw in an even larger player base. It can’t just be another Splatoon, you know? They also need to handle advertising way better, because honestly that killed the game before and during release.
To me all of the Splatoon games are starting to just feel like $60 DLCs. I mean, the biggest change from Splatoon 2 to 3 was the addition of that minigame in the lobby and catalogs. We have all of the same weapons as before with a few new ones, some of the same maps with a few new ones (And the maps aren't very good this time).. Salmon Run had a few nice changes, but it's still just Salmon Run with a few small changes in the end. No new ranked modes from 2 to 3 too? That seems crazy.
Splatoon 3 was SUPPOSED to be the culmination of the series. That's why originally, all the previous agents were meant to be in the storymode. However, the storymode had almost all of its content stripped back, and failed at supperceding itself over either of its two predecessors. I hope they don't pretend like this was actually the culmination when it was not in any way, shape, or form.
@@dalama1161 I disagree, there was new weapo tyes and balancing and mvoement mechanics that changed how you play, a stand out single player campaign, (some maps are good but yeah), and I mean...Salmon run has still changed with new ways to play it, king salmonoid bosses which is a pretty substantial change, egg throw, etc, it isn't the same Salmon Run as before. No new ranked modes is criminal though.

I mean it still feels like the culmination tbh, I don't see how it failed at superceding over it's two predecessors at all when it had a pretty great finale an final boss with the biggest stakes in the series yet. But it very much was the culmination and involved a villian that was 5 years in the making.
It scares me that Nintendo don’t want to ‘change things too much’ with Splatoon anymore - that is literally how a franchise evolves… The lack of a new permanent Ranked Mode DID hinder the memorability of Splatoon 3 and I don’t think Nintendo see that
To me Splatoon 3 feels like a $60 DLC of Splatoon 2 as well. We had a few new (not very good) maps, a few new weapons with a majority of the old ones, a few Salmon Run changes.. And the story mode is so short in 3 that it really does just feel like what a DLC is. Don't get me wrong I love Splatoon and I'd probably honestly buy 4 just to play more Splatfests but the lack of changes from 2 to 3 feels so lackluster.
I'll even say most of the changes the Splatoon series has done have been bad for the series. That's why Splatoon 1 is still the game with the best gameplay in the series.
I really doubt Nintendo would do that, as they're kinda known for doing the exact opposite of that, even to a detriment at times. Hell, even Splatoon itself exists as a result of that mindset, although I will admit that I'm a tad bit concerned over that too.
I feel like if Splatoon 4 were to happen, Nintendo needs to start listening to their fans. So many of them have wonderful ideas that could easily save the Splatoon franchise. Nintendo is just milking us atp

I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t really want a “Splatoon 4” right now. With how thematic Splatoon 3 is, a Splatoon 4 would kinda feel like it doesn’t belong, if that makes sense? If a Splatoon 4 did happen I’d imagine that it would be completely new (kinda like how Pokémon black and white was kinda separated as it’s own thing if that makes sense). Im mad at splatoon 3 for really abandoning the Chaos aspect after the Release. All we got was some madmax vibes with the crater that you only really visit shortly and then you habe Scotch Gorge and the hub.... Thats it. That all all the Chaos we get lol. But yeah I hope they really take thier time for 4 and I hope they let it simmer for a good while
The Splatoon filler that I want is a rhythm game based off of the in-game bands, since we all liked squid beats so much, and many more people are starting to get interested in the bands.
OMG YES I would love that! Not only would it be cool to expand on the band lore, it would be a good opportunity to give more bands more songs. My favorite band is the Bottom Feeders, and I'd love to have more songs from them

YES!! It is genuinely a crime that squid beatz didn't return in 3. The music is one of my favorite parts of the splatoon franchise and I would love to play a rhythm game with the music. (Hopefully also new songs, I NEED more H2Whoa)
Dang, why did Splatoon have to be the game thrown to a new team of new devs? I'd want to see the world where Animal Crossing got them instead and we got a Splatoon 3 made by the old team that made 1 and 2 beyond just the people at the top. I wanna see what THEIR third Splatoon game, what THAT Splatoon 3, would have been. I don't regret buying the Splatoon 3 we have, I still like it a lot and it's definitely the one I have the most hours in, but it's the definition of missed potential sadly.
I so agree omg. I always felt something was off about Splatoon 3 and the new devs really makes sense now. I at least hope they bring the old devs to make/collaborate with the newer devs on Splatoon 4. With that being said I am very aware that Animal Crossing has a large fanbase as well.
Splatoon needs customization like freckles and scars, more haircuts, a new story that is more immersive with character dialogue. (Like pokemon where there are sometimes dialogue splits that change context but not ending) they also need to have a new ranked mode, and idol group(s) that will even things out. Maybe a new setting like one of the other continents or an island, and they need to continue to fill the game with beautiful representation and color. That’s my wishlist, and most of the fans’ I think.

tf2 came out 17 years ago, which if they stopped 6 years ago, means that one game got 11 years of updates. How is that comparable to splatoon 3 which was only promised 2 years of updates (which really for them means 2 years to get "the whole game") with maybe some coding patches afterwards? Tf2 is also, you know, not 60 bucks???
I think the fact that the rookie developers were running the show was apparent from before the game dropped. Nintendo put an ad out for game devs for monolith soft either in late 2021 or early 2022, which was right in the middle of the development cycle. This was an indication that Nintendo wanted a younger development team for this game I think

I hope Splatoon 4 means no more FOMO seasons. I put so much time into Splatoon 3 that I never got any game time towards other Nintendo games. I never really got any time to even beat LOZ: Tears of the Kingdom, I played like 2 hours of it before going back to Splatoon 3 to complete the Seasonal Catalogue.
Isn't the catalogue already better than most FOMO features since they don't actually get rid of all the items from it and it's available to get after the season ends?

I feel like the main problem with Splatoon 3 was that if felt too similar to 2. There were good changes, but not enough. I say with 4 we keep what we have, maybe tweak some of the stats to make sure that what we have really feels perfect, and then add more. I’d like to see some new game modes, a longer and more fleshed out story, bring back squid beats, and maybe even some more of the mini games from Splatoon 1
I really hope 4 not only takes 4 years to produce, but that it is a proper LTS game. Splatoon 3 did a lot of good, but... most of it could have been an update.

Not really...? While the changes they made might be insignificant in the grand scheme, the technical details to support them probably aren't. Let alone the tech debt that results from continually supporting S2, including its (let's be real here, horribly designed) specials. At some point, you need to be able to jettison the cruft, and start at least somewhat fresh. The move from S2 to S3 makes sense in that context. Jettison Armor and Stingray, purge MPU, and give BDef DX the new coat of paint it deserves, among other important changes.
Ngl, splatoon has a ton of potential and an rpg, adventure, or mmo game would be a fantastic shake up for the series. That or they try different genres of the shooter genre like first person, or my personal favorite tactical. Heck imagine just another regular splatoon game but they explore something new. Like maybe setting one during the great turf war and giving two single player campaigns from the perspective of either a generic soldier or even something as cool as playing as cuttlefish and octavio in their prime. So yes, I’d be ok with a splatoon 4, but I want it to be a revival, reimagining, spin off, or an exploration of unexplored topics in the splatoon series.

@@DabinDonut And yet S2 got a content extension. S3, as far as we all can tell, is not. Can you imagine the Nintendo Switch successor not having Splatoon on it for 3 to 4 years? The franchise would die. Splatoon 2 came out VERY EARLY in the Switch's lifespan. One of the reasons I doubt S3 will have a content extension is 1. It wouldn't make sense if Switch 2 is releasing next Spring, and 2. Most of the devs on the game are very likely well into development of S4. Also, they probably didn't need to rush S3 because S2 was already on the console.

To be more accurate, they haven’t fully split the teams. 32.5% of New Horizons’ staff went to work on Splatoon 3, which is right in line with the usual 30-40% staff overlap between EPD 5 projects. For context, around 39% of Splatoon 2’s staff worked on New Horizons. In fact, I wouldn’t even describe them as the same team in the first place. EPD divisions are more of a pool of talents that each franchise draws from for their respective teams. IPs that share a pool are more likely to overlap considerably, as is the case with Animal Crossing & Splatoon. So while both can be worked on at the same time, they can only go full steam ahead with one or the other.
Didnt nintendo say that splatoon3 was the end of the main storyline? It would be a great chance to have a completely new captivating story and give a breath of fresh air to the franchise, though im not sure how it would go because people really love the og characters
The one thing that makes me think Splatoon 4 is really far off is that Splatoon 3 has longevity built into it's design, almost to a fault. In splatoon 1 and 2, the only real long-term goals for the player were to buy all the weapons and clothing, level up from online, and get all the salmon run gear in 2. With Splatoon 3 though, the long-term goals are so prevalent that it borders on parody. Badges that will take literal years of non-stop gameplay to unlock, the scale shop with rewards so expensive that people who have been playing from day 1 still can't afford the gear they want, and a near-bottomless money sink of gear to level up and locker items to buy. It wouldn't make sense to have all these features in the game and make them so grindy if the developers planned to make and release a direct sequel so soon after updates end.
Okay so opinion time again. I don't think this is Splatoon 4. I don't think there is any reason to make a new game when they could just make another wave of updates for 3. I honeslty cannot think of anything they could add or improve upon that couldn't be fixed in 3 with an update or DLC. 2 had some technical or design issues that limited it's ability to expand itself, but 3 was made with an more open-ended disign that allows for major changes to just be made in updates. Plus this is more of a hopefulness, but from my perspective the Splatfests and other evens have been less hyped up than 1 or 2. In terms of actual splatfests, 3 is closer to 1 than 2, and hasn't to my knowledge had any crossover Splatfests in any region. Whatever that's my rant. Btw that Uncle Quizzy demo isn't half bad. Give it a try if you have some time.
I just hate how boring the new maps are. 1 had some bangers and they all felt unique from each other. They tried to make 3's all "competitively viable" and I feel like that hurt it. Also, no split-screen still? Weak.
Am i the only person who just really didnt enjoy splatoon 3 compared to 2? I just really didn't like all the daily challenges, the unlocks, the thousands of customisations... I just wanted a good splatoon game. 3 is just too overwhelming, it felt like an infinitely wide, shallow ocean

I’ve got to be honest here, Splatoon 3 needs a lot more content. I’m beginning to feel like it may not happen, but the game desperately needs it. We need a third year of content (but ditch seasons), third kits for every weapon, a third page of maps, even a third DLC wave offering a third campaign (notice the number three a lot). If they end the game with the content that is currently in it, it will be by far the most underwhelming game in the series. Side Order was fun, but it absolutely cannot be the crux of the DLC for this game, because it’s fundamentally an expansion on Splatoon 2 and that game’s themes and characters, whereas I believe we need an expansion on Splatoon 3 and its ideas and characters, like OE was for S2. Funny that the expansion for Splatoon 3 should actually expand Splatoon 3, but seriously, all of the expansion pass has been nostalgia and has barely serviced the vibe of Splatoon 3 and the chaos of Splatsville.
Nintendo’s best move for splatoon right now is to give 3 a big content extension when the Switch 2 comes out. Give us another year of updates at the very least. Splatoon 3 underperformed compared to 2, sales wise, and I think it would foolish for them to drop it when they could almost repackage the game as a soft launch title for the next console (not a literal repackage, like a deluxe, just straight up the game). Another year of maps, weapons, some gear and maybe even two more waves to the DLC would be enough. They don’t have to keep doing catalogues tho! I think doing this is the best move they could make, it would renew a lot of players’ faith in 3 as a game and bring in lots of new players at the launch of the Switch 2, giving the game the chance to be a success that it never got!
I hope the rumor about two teams between Splatoon and Animal Crossing is true, but yeah, they should NOT be just putting every veteran developer on Animal Crossing and every rookie developer on Splatoon. You've gotta give both their fair shake down. You can't just completely hand over Splatoon entirely to a full new dev team and expect the quality to still be there. And the Animal Crossing needs to be bringing in some new people for new perspectives to clash with the older developers who may be stuck in their way of thinking as well.
In my opinion Splatoon 4 shouldn't even be put in production until Splatoon 3 is fixed. The thing that frustrates me with the idea of a Splatoon 4 is that Splatoon 3 could've been fantastic. But it feels rushed and like it didn't have its time to develop as its own game. That's why I think they should take more time to update and mess around with Splatoon 3. Also, I just don't see a point to a 4th game. The story felt finished in the 3rd and the online mode isn't terrible (it just needs some touch up). A 4th game will seriously feel like a money grab and I'm tired of money grabs. I want an actual game that feels like it was made with passion and for the player experience.
My thoughts are that splatoon 3 is the best game in the series but isnt at the same time, due to a lack of focus in the games locals characters and overall vibe. Splatoon 4 needs to have a theme and stick to it. I know i will probably get hate for saying this but splatoon 4 needs to be less competitively oriented and more fun for casuals, thats the reason i love splatoon 1and 2 so much.

One idea for splatoon 4 to improve the kit system (because I think the kit system is part of identity of splatoon) I have is to give every weapon 2 subs. One would be a bomb and one would be utility. This mean you won’t get Beamon and sprinkler or splat and burst bombs. I also want it to take place out side of modern day japan. Maybe in North America or Europe.
I actually looked into this like a week ago and I really agree, they need to take their time on the game… Splatoon 3 felt rushed and I guess there were a couple new gimmicks, but nothing super cool. Amazing video btw 😊
Man i wish you all the best on your game, it's hard from a yt content creator with established niche to pivot to a new type of content (which is a video game in your case now). There are a lot that i could comment and suggest, but i mostly want to point out that your kickstarter is too much explaining about the stretch goals and the team and not explaining about the game much further, like the features, characters, etc. It only has like 1 paragraph of game summary and 1 paragraph of plot. Would be nice to take inspirations from other established kickstarters. No hate towards your game, i'm just want a fellow gamedev to succeed. Oh and nice video covering this splat 4 rumors.
God, I hope Nintendo doesn't milk the Splatoon franchise to death like how the other triple AAA companies are doing it. I think the 4th Splatoon game will release around later 2020's/earlier 2030's for the next-gen Nintendo console. I also hope that the developers of Splatoon decides to start taking notes from the development process of Super Mario Bros Wonder. Also, I don't think Splatoon 3 delux is a good idea. I think it's better for Nintendo to make a spin-off game of Splatoon (like a Splatoon fighting game or a Splatoon rpg/jrpg game for a example). Splatoon 3 would have been so much better if 1. Nintendo pulled off the AC/Splat team split better by keeping some veteran devs on the team and 2. Nintendo dug there head out of the sand, listened to more criticism, and weren’t afraid to change the games foundation and evolve the formula. Splatoon won’t ever be a true AAA IP until devs leave the “We want you to play the game our way” crap behind them and do what fans actually want. Until they sort it out, I don’t want another Splatoon game.

If Nintendo was going to make another Splatoon game, I feel like there are a lot of problems they would have to fix to make it a good installment in the series. These are just some issues I wish were resolved: 1. Better Matchmaking: I don't know if I'm the only one or not, but every time I try to play anything, I am always matched with people who are far better than me. It gets frustrating when you just want to play and have fun, then all the sudden, S+ rankers just decide to show up and make my life a nightmare. I honestly think Splatoon 2 had better matchmaking, because it would pair you with people of a similar rank/skill-level, but Splatoon 3 feels like it just throws me into an open flame over and over again. I think they should show ranks and levels again like Splatoon 2 so I at least know the match is fair. 2. New Modes: I know I'm not the only one who thinks this. Playing the same exact modes that have been around since Splatoon 2 gets repetitive and boring. Maybe Nintendo should experiment with some of the things from Side Order, like the turbine tower, portals, and the ball. (pls don't hate me for that last one.) 3. Weapon Rebalancing: In Splatoon 3, it just feels like the same weapons show up again and again and are just overpowered. Others, like the splattershot pro, feel like they used to be better in Splatoon 2 but just suck now. Nintendo used to be a lot better at this in Splatoon 2, with the kits and the weapons themselves. (except missiles) 4. Better Maps: Lets be honest, we need better maps. Nintendo has gotten a little better at making maps throughout Splatoon 3, but it's still not great. They have to stop making the Tetris block and hallway maps. The maps need to be wide with several flanks. I think they should make maps with indoor and outdoor areas to help prevent experienced chargers from sniping people halfway across the map, and give them some defining features to make them more memorable. 5. Introduce a New Species: I feel like the species in each Splatoon game helped to make each game special. For example, we got the Octarians in Splatoon 1. I remember thinking that they were so cool with their tech, backstory, and unique music style that i kinda miss. They also made people hopeful that octolings could eventually become playable, and overall made people want to keep playing to see that happen. (look at us now) In Splatoon 2 we got the Salmonids and they are kinda similar, they had their own culture, backstory, and unique music style. I feel like we should have gotten a new potentially playable species to hope for in three like the Octarians, but we never did. (I'm not gonna count the Jelletons since they were virtual and will probably never come back or be playable) Sorry this was such a long comment, I have been very passionate about Splatoon for a long time now and I don't want to see Nintendo's ignorance cause the series i know and love to crash and burn.
Splatoon has so much potential as a series to grow. Even if 4 isn’t the “rebirth,” it has a lot of potential to be a wacky entry akin to Mario Sunshine to the rest of 3D Mario. I love the idea of a story based spin off game though
I wouldn't mind a 3 deluxe if it was handled similarity to how Playstation does their ps4 to ps5 ports and it could give 3 somewhat of an extended lifespan instead of 3 years of nothing like it was between 2 and 3. It could provide an extra dlc that actually connects to Splatoon 4 as a prologue or even makes the Splatoon 1 and 2 campaigns playable while we get some updates. I really do believe 3 as it is, is a filler game because of its development cycle being messy during the pandemic and that it was probably supposed to be a bigger game than what eventually came out. I'm also pretty sure it was internally delayed by like a year or 2 if the advertisements and social media posts are anything to go on.

As someone who enjoys playing splatoon 3 significantly less than i ever did 2 i honestly would rather have nintendo do splatoon 4 than keep 3 around splatoon 3 truthfully kinda gutted my love for the series. I still play the game and enjoy it but i was crazy into splatoon 2.

I'm a bit in the fence. I've wanted to buy a Nintendo switch oled since it came out, but I haven't had the chance until now. Now there are so many people saying that the switch 2 is coming, and that Splatoon 3 is near the end of its updates, I'm unsure of what I should do, if I should get the switch and the game now, or if u should wait until the switch 2 and Splatoon 4 release
Splatoon 1 was a prototpe game so was small scale on purpose. Splatoon 2 was a rushed game to get the series onto the Switch, but at least became a full sequel with the Octo Expansion DLC. Splatoon 3 was a rushed game to get the series onto a console they already had a Splatoon game that was prematurely killed, and even its DLC didn't help matters at all since it was also a terrible DLC. They need to stop this. Animal Crossing and Splatoon are both suffering because of this bad cycle, and they need to actually cook with this next game and have the time to cook. It's painful seeing the Splatoon 3 artbook absolutely filled with tons of concepts and then nothing made it in and the story mode was terrible with nothing happening outside of the ending level. Like in this video, the only complement you can give Splatoon 3 is "It had the most content on launch" but a game shouldn't be competing with previous games' LAUNCHES, it should be competing with the other game that is out and available RIGHT NOW. Again, its competition in that matter is a prototype/experimental game and a game that was rushed out just to be on a new console. It's a low bar that shouldn't be this hard to overcome.
I honestly hope that 3 is the last game, 3 was falling apart at the seams, and I feel like the new devs that have taken over splatoon have ZERO idea how to make a new one.
Dude, I partly agree with what you said, like in relation to updates with few kits and such, yes I agree, now saying that Splatoon 3 is the worst of the trilogy is a crime. Splatoon 3 managed to balance the play style of Splatoon 1 and 2, we don't have the problems that we had in the 1 of the ohko kits and we don't even have the problems with infinite tentamissils or INKSHIELD that we had in 2 (And don't remind me of Killer Wail)
I feel like before they dive into a whole new game, they should make some kind of spin off, like a mobile game to keep fans busy while we wait for splatoon 4. it coming out IMMEDIATELY after splat 3 would be disorienting. I don't want splatoon 3 the second. I want splatoon 4.
Honestly, while I think Splatoon 4 is the best hope over needlessly dragging on Splatoon 3, another part of me DOES want to wish that Splatoon 3 could get to that "This is a good place to end it at" place before then. But sadly, that wouldn't happen without getting another big DLC like Octo Expansion to hopefully do it, and Splatoon 3 and Side Order's developments have already both been hell so I can't see them doing that when the Switch 2 is around the corner.
Splatoon 3 is so sad because EVERYTHING was there for it to be the culmination of 1 + 2 and to be the best in the series. But like you laid out, from terrible updates, shitty weapon kits, tetrimino map design, lackluster seasonal content, no new meaningful gamemodes to play, its just disappointing. The game has hardly changed from splatoon 2, even after 6 years since that games release. Squid surge and roll are so underutilized its crazy, and it actually boggles the mind they made the angle shooter just to give it the worst stats imaginable and slowly buff it terribly and put it on like 5 kits. WHY are the newest 3 bombs (torp, fizzy, angle) the subs with the lowest kit numbers? Actual lunacy. This game makes me need a drink.
I don‘t understand why 3 even came out n the same console as 2, just doesn’t make any sense. As much as I hate that we didn’t get a real new Mariokart after 8 Deluxe, It made sense because another Mariokart would’ve split the playerbase and hindered the sales of 8 which is still going strong. They should’ve just kept Splatoon 2 and release the new maps and modes as DLC

It would be pretty sick if for splat 4 we went to a completely different continent with a completely different culture. That would involve unique maps, modes, weapons, and more. Of course you would have all of the same types of weapons we have now but it would be interesting if we could get a different take on how they looked and worked. With a new area too we could explore so many new possibilities and stories.
Something I like to say is that Splatoon 3 was the culmination of the series, so Splatoon 4 should be the rebirth. It really does need to be revolutionary for the franchise, with lots of new features and modes that will draw in an even larger player base. It can’t just be another Splatoon, you know? They also need to handle advertising way better, because honestly that killed the game before and during release.
To me all of the Splatoon games are starting to just feel like $60 DLCs. I mean, the biggest change from Splatoon 2 to 3 was the addition of that minigame in the lobby and catalogs. We have all of the same weapons as before with a few new ones, some of the same maps with a few new ones (And the maps aren't very good this time).. Salmon Run had a few nice changes, but it's still just Salmon Run with a few small changes in the end. No new ranked modes from 2 to 3 too? That seems crazy.
Splatoon 3 was SUPPOSED to be the culmination of the series. That's why originally, all the previous agents were meant to be in the storymode. However, the storymode had almost all of its content stripped back, and failed at supperceding itself over either of its two predecessors. I hope they don't pretend like this was actually the culmination when it was not in any way, shape, or form.

@@dalama1161 I disagree, there was new weapo tyes and balancing and mvoement mechanics that changed how you play, a stand out single player campaign, (some maps are good but yeah), and I mean...Salmon run has still changed with new ways to play it, king salmonoid bosses which is a pretty substantial change, egg throw, etc, it isn't the same Salmon Run as before. No new ranked modes is criminal though.

It scares me that Nintendo don’t want to ‘change things too much’ with Splatoon anymore - that is literally how a franchise evolves… The lack of a new permanent Ranked Mode DID hinder the memorability of Splatoon 3 and I don’t think Nintendo see that
To me Splatoon 3 feels like a $60 DLC of Splatoon 2 as well. We had a few new (not very good) maps, a few new weapons with a majority of the old ones, a few Salmon Run changes.. And the story mode is so short in 3 that it really does just feel like what a DLC is. Don't get me wrong I love Splatoon and I'd probably honestly buy 4 just to play more Splatfests but the lack of changes from 2 to 3 feels so lackluster.
I'll even say most of the changes the Splatoon series has done have been bad for the series. That's why Splatoon 1 is still the game with the best gameplay in the series.
I really doubt Nintendo would do that, as they're kinda known for doing the exact opposite of that, even to a detriment at times. Hell, even Splatoon itself exists as a result of that mindset, although I will admit that I'm a tad bit concerned over that too.

I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t really want a “Splatoon 4” right now. With how thematic Splatoon 3 is, a Splatoon 4 would kinda feel like it doesn’t belong, if that makes sense? If a Splatoon 4 did happen I’d imagine that it would be completely new (kinda like how Pokémon black and white was kinda separated as it’s own thing if that makes sense).

Dang, why did Splatoon have to be the game thrown to a new team of new devs? I'd want to see the world where Animal Crossing got them instead and we got a Splatoon 3 made by the old team that made 1 and 2 beyond just the people at the top. I wanna see what THEIR third Splatoon game, what THAT Splatoon 3, would have been. I don't regret buying the Splatoon 3 we have, I still like it a lot and it's definitely the one I have the most hours in, but it's the definition of missed potential sadly.

I so agree omg. I always felt something was off about Splatoon 3 and the new devs really makes sense now. I at least hope they bring the old devs to make/collaborate with the newer devs on Splatoon 4. With that being said I am very aware that Animal Crossing has a large fanbase as well.
Splatoon needs customization like freckles and scars, more haircuts, a new story that is more immersive with character dialogue. (Like pokemon where there are sometimes dialogue splits that change context but not ending) they also need to have a new ranked mode, and idol group(s) that will even things out. Maybe a new setting like one of the other continents or an island, and they need to continue to fill the game with beautiful representation and color. That’s my wishlist, and most of the fans’ I think.

tf2 came out 17 years ago, which if they stopped 6 years ago, means that one game got 11 years of updates. How is that comparable to splatoon 3 which was only promised 2 years of updates (which really for them means 2 years to get "the whole game") with maybe some coding patches afterwards? I think the fact that the rookie developers were running the show was apparent from before the game dropped. Nintendo put an ad out for game devs for monolith soft either in late 2021 or early 2022, which was right in the middle of the development cycle. This was an indication that Nintendo wanted a younger development team for this game I think

I hope Splatoon 4 means no more FOMO seasons. I put so much time into Splatoon 3 that I never got any game time towards other Nintendo games. I never really got any time to even beat LOZ: Tears of the Kingdom, I played like 2 hours of it before going back to Splatoon 3 to complete the Seasonal Catalogue.

I feel like the main problem with Splatoon 3 was that if felt too similar to 2. There were good changes, but not enough. I say with 4 we keep what we have, maybe tweak some of the stats to make sure that what we have really feels perfect, and then add more. I’d like to see some new game modes, a longer and more fleshed out story, bring back squid beats, and maybe even some more of the mini games from Splatoon 1

While the changes they made might be insignificant in the grand scheme, the technical details to support them probably aren't. Let alone the tech debt that results from continually supporting S2, including its (let's be real here, horribly designed) specials.
At some point, you need to be able to jettison the cruft, and start at least somewhat fresh. The move from S2 to S3 makes sense in that context. Jettison Armor and Stingray, purge MPU, and give BDef DX the new coat of paint it deserves, among other important changes.

Ngl, splatoon has a ton of potential and an rpg, adventure, or mmo game would be a fantastic shake up for the series. That or they try different genres of the shooter genre like first person, or my personal favorite tactical.
Heck imagine just another regular splatoon game but they explore something new. Like maybe setting one during the great turf war and giving two single player campaigns from the perspective of either a generic soldier or even something as cool as playing as cuttlefish and octavio in their prime.
So yes, I’d be ok with a splatoon 4, but I want it to be a revival, reimagining, spin off, or an exploration of unexplored topics in the splatoon series.

@@DabinDonut And yet S2 got a content extension. S3, as far as we all can tell, is not. Can you imagine the Nintendo Switch successor not having Splatoon on it for 3 to 4 years? The franchise would die. Splatoon 2 came out VERY EARLY in the Switch's lifespan. One of the reasons I doubt S3 will have a content extension is 1. It wouldn't make sense if Switch 2 is releasing next Spring, and 2. Most of the devs on the game are very likely well into development of S4. Also, they probably didn't need to rush S3 because S2 was already on the console.

To be more accurate, they haven’t fully split the teams. 32.5% of New Horizons’ staff went to work on Splatoon 3, which is right in line with the usual 30-40% staff overlap between EPD 5 projects. For context, around 39% of Splatoon 2’s staff worked on New Horizons.
In fact, I wouldn’t even describe them as the same team in the first place. EPD divisions are more of a pool of talents that each franchise draws from for their respective teams. IPs that share a pool are more likely to overlap considerably, as is the case with Animal Crossing & Splatoon. So while both can be worked on at the same time, they can only go full steam ahead with one or the other.
Didnt nintendo say that splatoon3 was the end of the main storyline? It would be a great chance to have a completely new captivating story and give a breath of fresh air to the franchise, though im not sure how it would go because people really love the og characters
The one thing that makes me think Splatoon 4 is really far off is that Splatoon 3 has longevity built into it's design, almost to a fault. In splatoon 1 and 2, the only real long-term goals for the player were to buy all the weapons and clothing, level up from online, and get all the salmon run gear in 2. With Splatoon 3 though, the long-term goals are so prevalent that it borders on parody. Badges that will take literal years of non-stop gameplay to unlock, the scale shop with rewards so expensive that people who have been playing from day 1 still can't afford the gear they want, and a near-bottomless money sink of gear to level up and locker items to buy. It wouldn't make sense to have all these features in the game and make them so grindy if the developers planned to make and release a direct sequel so soon after updates end.
Okay so opinion time again. I don't think this is Splatoon 4. I don't think there is any reason to make a new game when they could just make another wave of updates for 3. I honeslty cannot think of anything they could add or improve upon that couldn't be fixed in 3 with an update or DLC.
2 had some technical or design issues that limited it's ability to expand itself, but 3 was made with an more open-ended disign that allows for major changes to just be made in updates. Plus this is more of a hopefulness, but from my perspective the Splatfests and other evens have been less hyped up than 1 or 2. In terms of actual splatfests, 3 is closer to 1 than 2, and hasn't to my knowledge had any crossover Splatfests in any region.
Whatever that's my rant.

I just hate how boring the new maps are. 1 had some bangers and they all felt unique from each other. They tried to make 3's all "competitively viable" and I feel like that hurt it. Also, no split-screen still? Weak.
Am i the only person who just really didnt enjoy splatoon 3 compared to 2? I just really didn't like all the daily challenges, the unlocks, the thousands of customisations... I just wanted a good splatoon game. 3 is just too overwhelming, it felt like an infinitely wide, shallow ocean

I’ve got to be honest here, Splatoon 3 needs a lot more content. I’m beginning to feel like it may not happen, but the game desperately needs it. We need a third year of content (but ditch seasons), third kits for every weapon, a third page of maps, even a third DLC wave offering a third campaign (notice the number three a lot). If they end the game with the content that is currently in it, it will be by far the most underwhelming game in the series. Side Order was fun, but it absolutely cannot be the crux of the DLC for this game, because it’s fundamentally an expansion on Splatoon 2 and that game’s themes and characters, whereas I believe we need an expansion on Splatoon 3 and its ideas and characters, like OE was for S2. Funny that the expansion for Splatoon 3 should actually expand Splatoon 3, but seriously, all of the expansion pass has been nostalgia and has barely serviced the vibe of Splatoon 3 and the chaos of Splatsville.

Nintendo’s best move for splatoon right now is to give 3 a big content extension when the Switch 2 comes out. Give us another year of updates at the very least. Splatoon 3 underperformed compared to 2, sales wise, and I think it would foolish for them to drop it when they could almost repackage the game as a soft launch title for the next console (not a literal repackage, like a deluxe, just straight up the game). Another year of maps, weapons, some gear and maybe even two more waves to the DLC would be enough. They don’t have to keep doing catalogues tho!
I think doing this is the best move they could make, it would renew a lot of players’ faith in 3 as a game and bring in lots of new players at the launch of the Switch 2, giving the game the chance to be a success that it never got!
I hope the rumor about two teams between Splatoon and Animal Crossing is true, but yeah, they should NOT be just putting every veteran developer on Animal Crossing and every rookie developer on Splatoon. You've gotta give both their fair shake down. You can't just completely hand over Splatoon entirely to a full new dev team and expect the quality to still be there. And the Animal Crossing needs to be bringing in some new people for new perspectives to clash with the older developers who may be stuck in their way of thinking as well.

Splatoon puzzle platformer when?
In my opinion Splatoon 4 shouldn't even be put in production until Splatoon 3 is fixed. The thing that frustrates me with the idea of a Splatoon 4 is that Splatoon 3 could've been fantastic. But it feels rushed and like it didn't have its time to develop as its own game. That's why I think they should take more time to update and mess around with Splatoon 3. Also, I just don't see a point to a 4th game. The story felt finished in the 3rd and the online mode isn't terrible (it just needs some touch up). A 4th game will seriously feel like a money grab and I'm tired of money grabs. I want an actual game that feels like it was made with passion and for the player experience.
My thoughts are that splatoon 3 is the best game in the series but isnt at the same time, due to a lack of focus in the games locals characters and overall vibe. Splatoon 4 needs to have a theme and stick to it. I know i will probably get hate for saying this but splatoon 4 needs to be less competitively oriented and more fun for casuals, thats the reason i love splatoon 1and 2 so much.

One idea for splatoon 4 to improve the kit system (because I think the kit system is part of identity of splatoon) I have is to give every weapon 2 subs. One would be a bomb and one would be utility. This mean you won’t get Beamon and sprinkler or splat and burst bombs.
I also want it to take place out side of modern day japan. Maybe in North America or Europe.

Man i wish you all the best on your game, it's hard from a yt content creator with established niche to pivot to a new type of content (which is a video game in your case now).
There are a lot that i could comment and suggest, but i mostly want to point out that your kickstarter is too much explaining about the stretch goals and the team and not explaining about the game much further, like the features, characters, etc. It only has like 1 paragraph of game summary and 1 paragraph of plot. Would be nice to take inspirations from other established kickstarters. No hate towards your game, i'm just want a fellow gamedev to succeed.

I think it's better for Nintendo to make a spin-off game of Splatoon (like a Splatoon fighting game or a Splatoon rpg/jrpg game for a example).

Splatoon 3 would have been so much better if 1. Nintendo pulled off the AC/Splat team split better by keeping some veteran devs on the team and 2. Nintendo dug there head out of the sand, listened to more criticism, and weren’t afraid to change the games foundation and evolve the formula. Splatoon won’t ever be a true AAA IP until devs leave the “We want you to play the game our way” crap behind them and do what fans actually want. Until they sort it out, I don’t want another Splatoon game.

what? huh? is this a joke? the literal issue with splatoon 3 is that nintendo fully listened to the fans, got rid of stages they hated (camp triggerfish, moray towers, etc) and made the game more streamlined and competitive. thats literally what the fans demanded in 1 and 2, nintendo listened to their every word, and then splatoon 3 was awful because of it.

You guys do realize that this project has probably been being worked on since S3s release, with a small portion of the team handling updates and dlc.
If Nintendo was going to make another Splatoon game, I feel like there are a lot of problems they would have to fix to make it a good installment in the series. These are just some issues I wish were resolved:
1. Better Matchmaking: I don't know if I'm the only one or not, but every time I try to play anything, I am always matched with people who are far better than me. It gets frustrating when you just want to play and have fun, then all the sudden, S+ rankers just decide to show up and make my life a nightmare. I honestly think Splatoon 2 had better matchmaking, because it would pair you with people of a similar rank/skill-level, but Splatoon 3 feels like it just throws me into an open flame over and over again. I think they should show ranks and levels again like Splatoon 2 so I at least know the match is fair.
2. New Modes: I know I'm not the only one who thinks this. Playing the same exact modes that have been around since Splatoon 2 gets repetitive and boring. Maybe Nintendo should experiment with some of the things from Side Order, like the turbine tower, portals, and the ball. (pls don't hate me for that last one.)
3. Weapon Rebalancing: In Splatoon 3, it just feels like the same weapons show up again and again and are just overpowered. Others, like the splattershot pro, feel like they used to be better in Splatoon 2 but just suck now. Nintendo used to be a lot better at this in Splatoon 2, with the kits and the weapons themselves. (except missiles)
4. Better Maps: Lets be honest, we need better maps. Nintendo has gotten a little better at making maps throughout Splatoon 3, but it's still not great. They have to stop making the Tetris block and hallway maps. The maps need to be wide with several flanks. I think they should make maps with indoor and outdoor areas to help prevent experienced chargers from sniping people halfway across the map, and give them some defining features to make them more memorable.
5. Introduce a New Species: I feel like the species in each Splatoon game helped to make each game special. For example, we got the Octarians in Splatoon 1. I remember thinking that they were so cool with their tech, backstory, and unique music style that i kinda miss. They also made people hopeful that octolings could eventually become playable, and overall made people want to keep playing to see that happen. (look at us now) In Splatoon 2 we got the Salmonids and they are kinda similar, they had their own culture, backstory, and unique music style. I feel like we should have gotten a new potentially playable species to hope for in three like the Octarians, but we never did. (I'm not gonna count the Jelletons since they were virtual and will probably never come back or be playable)
Sorry this was such a long comment, I have been very passionate about Splatoon for a long time now and I don't want to see Nintendo's ignorance cause the series i know and love to crash and burn.
Splatoon has so much potential as a series to grow. Even if 4 isn’t the “rebirth,” it has a lot of potential to be a wacky entry akin to Mario Sunshine to the rest of 3D Mario. I love the idea of a story based spin off game though
I wouldn't mind a 3 deluxe if it was handled similarity to how Playstation does their ps4 to ps5 ports and it could give 3 somewhat of an extended lifespan instead of 3 years of nothing like it was between 2 and 3. It could provide an extra dlc that actually connects to Splatoon 4 as a prologue or even makes the Splatoon 1 and 2 campaigns playable while we get some updates.
I really do believe 3 as it is, is a filler game because of its development cycle being messy during the pandemic and that it was probably supposed to be a bigger game than what eventually came out. I'm also pretty sure it was internally delayed by like a year or 2 if the advertisements and social media posts are anything to go on.
As someone who owned but didn’t particularly enjoy S1 or S2, I couldn’t disagree more over this game being the weakest link

Splatoon 3 could’ve been better if there was no Side Order DLC to keep the devs occupied. It was fun but I would’ve rather them focused on the main game
As someone who enjoys playing splatoon 3 significantly less than i ever did 2 i honestly would rather have nintendo do splatoon 4 than keep 3 around splatoon 3 truthfully kinda gutted my love for the series. I still play the game and enjoy it but i was crazy into splatoon 2.
Honestly I don’t really want a splatoon 4 for a while, I have the feeling they’re gonna release it soon after 3, especially with how lazy the content we’ve been getting lately is, I hope they save it and actually complete it. I’d much rather have a legacy game or something instead.
I'm a bit in the fence. I've wanted to buy a Nintendo switch oled since it came out, but I haven't had the chance until now. Now there are so many people saying that the switch 2 is coming, and that Splatoon 3 is near the end of its updates, I'm unsure of what I should do, if I should get the switch and the game now, or if u should wait until the switch 2 and Splatoon 4 release

Splatoon 1 was a prototpe game so was small scale on purpose.
Splatoon 2 was a rushed game to get the series onto the Switch, but at least became a full sequel with the Octo Expansion DLC.
Splatoon 3 was a rushed game to get the series onto a console they already had a Splatoon game that was prematurely killed, and even its DLC didn't help matters at all since it was also a terrible DLC.
They need to stop this. Animal Crossing and Splatoon are both suffering because of this bad cycle, and they need to actually cook with this next game and have the time to cook. It's painful seeing the Splatoon 3 artbook absolutely filled with tons of concepts and then nothing made it in and the story mode was terrible with nothing happening outside of the ending level. Like in this video, the only complement you can give Splatoon 3 is "It had the most content on launch" but a game shouldn't be competing with previous games' LAUNCHES, it should be competing with the other game that is out and available RIGHT NOW. Again, its competition in that matter is a prototype/experimental game and a game that was rushed out just to be on a new console. It's a low bar that shouldn't be this hard to overcome.

Dude, I partly agree with what you said, like in relation to updates with few kits and such, yes I agree, now saying that Splatoon 3 is the worst of the trilogy is a crime. Splatoon 3 managed to balance the play style of Splatoon 1 and 2, we don't have the problems that we had in the 1 of the ohko kits and we don't even have the problems with infinite tentamissils or INKSHIELD that we had in 2 (And don't remind me of Killer Wail)

Honestly, while I think Splatoon 4 is the best hope over needlessly dragging on Splatoon 3, another part of me DOES want to wish that Splatoon 3 could get to that "This is a good place to end it at" place before then. But sadly, that wouldn't happen without getting another big DLC like Octo Expansion to hopefully do it, and Splatoon 3 and Side Order's developments have already both been hell so I can't see them doing that when the Switch 2 is around the corner.
Splatoon 3 is so sad because EVERYTHING was there for it to be the culmination of 1 + 2 and to be the best in the series. But like you laid out, from terrible updates, shitty weapon kits, tetrimino map design, lackluster seasonal content, no new meaningful gamemodes to play, its just disappointing. The game has hardly changed from splatoon 2, even after 6 years since that games release. Squid surge and roll are so underutilized its crazy, and it actually boggles the mind they made the angle shooter just to give it the worst stats imaginable and slowly buff it terribly and put it on like 5 kits. WHY are the newest 3 bombs (torp, fizzy, angle) the subs with the lowest kit numbers? Actual lunacy. This game makes me need a drink.

I don‘t understand why 3 even came out n the same console as 2, just doesn’t make any sense. As much as I hate that we didn’t get a real new Mariokart after 8 Deluxe, It made sense because another Mariokart would’ve split the playerbase and hindered the sales of 8 which is still going strong. They should’ve just kept Splatoon 2 and release the new maps and modes as DLC

It would be pretty sick if for splat 4 we went to a completely different continent with a completely different culture. That would involve unique maps, modes, weapons, and more. Of course you would have all of the same types of weapons we have now but it would be interesting if we could get a different take on how they looked and worked. With a new area too we could explore so many new possibilities and stories.
There’s no way the mainline games end, we’ll probably get 1-2 mainline games per system plus whatever other spinoffs may release
