Heard this outstanding performance multiple times! Why then? Because it is beyond this world. Wow what an organist, what an organ, and what a Marcel Dupré!!!
These Prelude et Fugue (op 7) recordings are extremly well done! With these videos everything is nearly perfect! Yves Castagnet's playing is just stunning and the video and audio quality is superb, too. I think they are perhabs the best recordings of this piece available on youtube!
For non-organists who might come across this after the great fire, we understand that the great organ of Notre Dame seems to be salvageable and hopefully will one day be heard again. While I'm here you may also be interested to know that most organists - even many professionals - fear this Dupre piece; it is a strong candidate for the most technically difficult piece to play in the whole organ repertoire. It was written by Marcel Dupre who was organist at Notre Dame in the early twentieth century. M. Castagnet is making it look easy but please believe me, it really is not!!
@@andre26071955 Technically yes, that's correct, but I believe Dupré was the deputy organist at Notre Dame for five years from 1916 while Louis Vierne was abroad (having his eye-sight treated in Switzerland). That's how Dupré 's op. 18 (the 15 Versets pour les Vêpres du Commun des Fêtes de la Sainte Vierge) came to be improvised and then published in 1919/20. Dupré's time at St-Sulpice began around fifteen years later in 1934. I deliberately didn't say that Dupré had been organiste-titulaire at Notre Dame, but I admit it might have been misleading!
Just Awesome! The cathedral is awe - inspiring... I had the great privilege of having my music played in Notre Dame by Marilyn Mason and Donald Fishel, an experience i will never forget.
It is incredible how one of the most difficult (and exciting!) pieces written for the organ seems to flow effortlessly from his finger tips... simply excellent
How humbling it must be to play such an historic and wonderful instrument! Cavaille-Coll has left an eternal imprint on organ music which will never fade. Such a humble genius.
It’s hard to decide as an organist whether to give up or be completely inspired. I think I’m going with absolutely inspired with this brilliant and most stunning performance of such a masterpiece in the repertoire. Such unearthly perfection!

Meraviglioso tutto! Video, audio, interpretazione... complimenti Maestro!
Listening and watching again. Goosepimples still all over me.... Thank you sóóó much Yves. You are really amázing. Realizing that the most beautiful organ in the world is likely to be saved even adds to the joy you gave me once again! Adri from Holland
Awesome recording! Perfectly played by Yves Castagnet. I luckely had the oppertunity to visit a concert of him in Bonn-Beuel in 2013. The video quality is also superb!
smart man.. plays it at a reasonable fast tempo... but leave time for the room the breath... beautifully played!!!! (and... a really GREAT line throughout the Prelude and Fugue... very impressive!!!)
Yves et Marcel D. are gifts from God. I hope to meet him after the Covid. Absolutely an amazing artiste. If I heard this in person, I would be sobbing, and would need to be picked up and carried out the door!!!
Repetition to train muscle memory. Memorizing small sections and piecing them together. For a piece like this, I think from memory is the only way to play it with top facility. I say this as one who has never approached that level, not by light-years. :)
Awesome and respectful presentation. The Healthcare workers deserve this blessing. Also the sense of international respect is true perfection. The sound and mixing could nit be any more perfect. You are all a blessing to the world as you share this
Best performance ever of the very tricky fugue. I always think its a shame that Dupre did not produce a fingered edition of these - I wonder if his copies had detailed marking in them? Afterall he produced copious edited edition of other people's works.
You are truly his successor! You are a genius! Hope to seen you after the covid in Delft, Maria van Jesse church. You'll love the dutch fabricated Maarschalkerweerd organ of 1893, inspired bij Cavaille Coll.
It owes an amazing amount to the 19th and 20th century organ literature for the French: Guilmant, Widor, Franck, Saint Saens, Bonet, Vierne, Dupre, Alain, Langlais, Messiaen, Boelmann, Dubois, Duruflé, Tournemire....thank you very much.
More Redemption of a great many things, Yves! And to think that those very pipes which make up that Fonds 8' were repeatedly sounded not only by Vierne, but by Dupré who was to be "keeping the bench warm" for Vierne while he was away in Switzerland for that terrible eye surgery. ...but let's not rehearse that sad chapter of organ history. It all turned out okay. And. Maybe in some higher dimensional planes the two giants can just share a long embrace, brought to us by The God of Happy Endings. Pure fire, mon vieux. But also pure patience as evidenced by the sweetly timed "rests" not inscribed into the score. You (and Dupré) got me this time! Thanks for that. Mark
I wonder , what was the recording distance? Recording is really good, sound seems to be relatively direct and clear, allowing as to hear every pipe distinctly.
I endorse all the plaudits written here for the performance. But, I have a production question for P-F. How many cameras are used? I counted at least four distinct points of view. One camera was manned (the one zooming), the others were probably not. So, superb editing to enhance a remarkable recital. Thank you. I have just encountered this video tonight.
There are many good recordings of this piece by outstanding organists on magnificent organs, however Yves plays it with exemplary transparency: CHAPEAU !!!
And the sad thing is that your average Joe, o Michelle dans Paris, have no idea whatsoever what a treasure of M. Castagnet, et le orgue de Cavaille-Colle is in their midst. Paris needs to educate it's people, and once the Covid is safe, have a massive organ concert day in all the great churches in paris. Big screens, video projections, outside seating, lasers, etc
Dupre' did play as Vierne's deputy one summer at Notre Dame when Vierne was on tour in North America. The two later had a falling out over various matters.

wow love this man
That may have been the best interpretation I have heard of this P&F yet.
Unbelievable that he plays it by heart! ❤
The best youtube performance of this piece I have heard....

Wahnsinn!!!
Can I only like this once - or I would like it 10 times
Klasse Yves!🌞

This video is one of the best music video and organ players I've seen on the video market
Awesome recording! Perfectly played by Yves Castagnet. I luckely had the oppertunity to visit a concert of him in Bonn-Beuel in 2013. The video quality is also superb!
Eccezionale. Non servono altre parole. Ripresa sonora eccellente.
Great technique Mr. Castagnet !!
So beautiful. Weeping!
So loved this to my soul❤❤❤❤❤
Most glorious! Great video and sound too! Can't wait for this great instrument to be heard once more!
Truly inspiring interpretation! Wonderful recording :)
smart man.. plays it at a reasonable fast tempo... but leave time for the room the breath... beautifully played!!!! (and... a really GREAT line throughout the Prelude and Fugue... very impressive!!!)
Bravo!
Merci M. Dub

What sends me is when he hits the sequencer and unleashes the full pressure near the end. Can't do that on just any organ. Wow.
One of my very favourite organ pieces. Thank you for posting this excellent video. And a wonderful, clear interpretation also.
Wonderful playing.
Dupre would be pleased!
incredible piece and performance! God bless you! 😍🙏
You are a genius organist!!

back again, and again mesmerized. How does someone learn all those notes?

Un merveilleux souvenir, plein d'espérance...
Fabuleux !
C'etait superbe, M Castagnet! Merci.
Fantastic performance and production! Many thanks!

You make look effortless.. Bravo!
I love this performance
Fantastic!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Beautiful, Beautiful!

Tout simplement magistral ! Merci !
Yes a great performance for sure!!
Amazing! 😍😍
Excellent sound!! New Year stats great!
*Heavenly*🙏🙏🙏
Beautiful! More please... op. 37? That would be great!

staggering performance
Musique qui transporte. Bel accoustique
Excellent videography ! Are these the mics hung from the vaults? They sound cardioid and very present
Sublime !!!

Back again, still hits me in the heart? BTW this is my sailboat's theme song! Grand Soleil
Marcel Dupre would have approved this performance!
Superb
Fenomenal, magnífico!
Magnificent!
C'est Magnificant! Bon Bon! xo Jean
I wonder , what was the recording distance? Recording is really good, sound seems to be relatively direct and clear, allowing as to hear every pipe distinctly.
Quite jazzy!
....exzellent.

One word: fab!
Hopefully this organ can be restored and we can hear it again in 2024/25.

Att. Allister, Marcel Dupre was organist at St-Sulpice in Paris, not Notre-Dame. Whatever, Mr. Castagnet is a great composer and organist!
Dupre' did play as Vierne's deputy one summer at Notre Dame when Vierne was on tour in North America. The two later had a falling out over various matters.
pog
written and performed in Heaven.
GOOSEPIMPLES.......WOW.....
Sans partition ... ouch!
@G G Agreed, especially a piece on this level of difficulty...if you need to be reading it, it's not up to what it could be.

auswendig !!!!
