    I will have Passacaglia played during my funeral service. Its omnipotent ending in particular does perfectly herald the triumph of rising above the powers and principalities, the rulers of the darkness of this world, passing through every gate, breaking every chain. That would be my only musical requirement. I also hope to have the opportunity to hear this performed in the Notre Dame while being there.

    Personally I think this performance is by far the best from all performances of Bach's Passacaglia & Fugue. Beautiful & fascinating piece on a gigantesque and wonderful organ. Latry gives in his play an emotional atmosphere which seems to be as if the Heaven comes down to the Earth, and therefore he is my favourite organist. I say thank you him that I understood this organpiece and could learn it. Merci beaucoup! BRAVO!

      The power of chamades :)
      I have several favourite moments in that piece. The first is when you hear that wood clank at 6:47 and you know you're about to hear something breathtaking, and you get one of the most beautiful build ups to 7:15. Then he very cleverly opens up a 32" reeds to make an illusion that pedal melody is going even octave lower. Later, that sudden change to major at 7:55, and that perfect rubato at 8:39. Of course, the whole piece is beautiful but these moments are the reason why I listen to it almost everyday

    • @geuros
      @geuros 7 лет назад +9

      piece man, piece, not song :P unfortunately, this organ is now pure crap compared to what it used to be at time Cavaillé-Coll finished his works on it. It's sad but people reworked this organ too many times since Cavaillé-Coll, it lacks the original sound, and currently it's just loud but I can't say I like the sound. St. Sulpice in Paris (it's like 2km away from Notre-Dame), St. Ouen (or Audoin, in Rouen) are great examples of Cavaillé-Coll organs that retained their original sound (C-C sound) to present time. I guess those two are the best Cavaillé-Coll organs in the world right now.

    • @marcioballmann2174
      @marcioballmann2174 7 лет назад +7

      Excuse me for asking, but how would you know how this organ souded when Coll finished working on it?... I think you weren't alive back then ;) and don't say because you heard Ouen and Sulpice... those are differente instruments. :)
      I understand your point of view when you say it has been "reworked" a heck of a lot and that this can decharacterise the instrument (maybe that's the case here) but that doesn't mean that this organ is total crap... Not to forget that the professionals that worked on it are indeed professionals... I doubt they would have hired amateur organbuilders to work on this organ ;)

    • @geuros
      @geuros 7 лет назад +6

      i did some deep research on that, there are people writing their master thesis' about that instrument. And yes, originally it sounded similar to St. Sulpice, in fact, all Cavaillé-Coll organs that are not reworked sound unique but similar at the same time, you just know when you hear C-C, let it be Sacré Coeur, St. Sulpice or St. Ouen. Notre Dame currently doesn't sound as a Cavaillé-Coll instrument. And don't get fooled, maybe we have better technologies today, but organbuilding is an art, needs some craftsmanship, Cavaillé-Coll was indeed an artisan, he felt, what's right, he was addicted to perfection, he even funded more stops than what was ordered just for feeling that the organ deserves it, his company was always on the border of bankrupt, despite being world-wide famous even during his life. Take E.F. Walcker - they got chosen to build the famous Riga dom organ, now 150 years ago, they weren't chosen to do the restauration works, because they're not good enough. You can be a proffessional but that doesn't mean you're good enough. This organ maybe is not a total crap in pianos, but when on pleno, yikes

    Cette musique evoque pour moi la souffrance et le combat eternel que nous simples etres humains combattons toute notre vie... chasser les demons qui nous habitent, les noyer au plus profond des abimes, s en debarrasser ! Mais pour cela nous devons payer tot ou tard, cette musique me rappelle a quel point la purete implique le martyr (ponctuel ou parfois a vie). Vous vous rendez compte ? La puissance de cette musique ? Ces vibrations ? Cette pression acoustique... aucun autre instrument ne me l a provoque... je ne suis pas vraiment croyant et pourtant je commence a croire que nous ne sommes pas sur terre par hazard ! La magie ! Tout cela est l inexplicable, le mystere, l autre cote de notre dimension humaine... l immateriel, le neant et son pouvoir sur nous ! On oublie trop souvent que nous ne sommes que de Simples creatures fragiles, poussieres de la galaxie, combinaison de mollecules, de gaz, d electricite, enfants d etoiles, a genoux soumis devant notre titanesque et puissant Cosmos...

    There are no words that can describe this instrument, It defies comparison to any other on earth To have heard Master Pierre and now another great artist who need not bow to any other living artist playing upon this transcendental masterpiece of an instrument that to me captures the fury, and the glorious creation. This organ has the light and power of creation itself. In 1979 I spent 8 hours with Virgil Fox and a few others witnessing him play from memory every composition by Vierne from 4PM to 1:30AM. I can not describe here what happened but I do in my book soon to be released. Thank you Master Latry. David Snyder, Lumierist, Creator of Virgil Fox Heavy Organ Touring Production.

    • @DavidSnyderLumierist
      @DavidSnyderLumierist 7 лет назад +8

      Very interesting thought about Bach. You mentioned "sounding" like Bach". Actually Bach sounds like nothing ! Think about it for a moment. Bach composed music represented by "notes" that he placed for us onto a score. That in its purest form only,, IS Bach,,a silent, lifeless printed page waiting to be brought to life by a musician. Every musician who takes those silent notes and reads and then plays those notes brings Bachs' music to life just as the sun brings a dull dead stained glass window to glorious life .If you want pure Bach, buy a sheet of his music and sit and read it in silence. If you want Bach's glorious music take that sheet of notes and go to the instrument and put your soul into expressing his written notes,, or listen to a great artist who takes those notes and brings them to life. Give his works the best of your creative spirit by you interpreting his printed notes that are true gifts to us from our and his creator. Try it. David Snyder, Lumierist

    A Passacaglia de Bach mostra os níveis divinos que ele atingiu, na contrapontística, fugas e músicas bem temperadas, usava sequências de afinação com base no Cálculo (sequencias de Fibonacci), sem dúvidas sempre será o maior Virtuoso. A imponência desta música é demonstrada no seu baixo-ostinato, que até hoje é usado em músicas apreciadas por todos. Sem dúvidas ele foi e sempre será a raiz da música.

      @@155Metalhead personally, I prefer Richter's DG, particularly speaking when it comes to the Passacaglia's ending and the Fugue. That Bombarde is... too much.
      Latry is a Master organist, Notre-Dame's Grand Organ is a masterpiece and this is indeed a great interpretation, but his style fits more properly to the French Romantic repertoire IMHO.

    And no mere fire could destroy this organ! It's alive! Well, it will be. Since the church is being rebuilt, the organ was dismantled and will be updated and refurbished elsewhere, then reinstalled when the church repairs are complete.

    Que poderosa composición para órgano, sencillamente inquietante, obscura, llena de misterio, el tema fugado parece que narrara el desenlace de una tragedia, triste, inevitable, fatal y la interpretación es sencillamente perfecta, Sr. Latry mis sinceras felicitaciones. Johann Sebastian Bach para mí es el más sublime de todos los compositores, Soli deo gloria!

    There are musicologists, the late Stokowski among them, who have stated that this Passacaglia is the greatest piece of organ music ever written and arguably the single greatest piece of music written . . . period. (Difficult to say when listening to a Beethoven symphony!) Listen to Piet Kee's version at St Bavo, Haarlem for valid comparison.
