What a shattering experience it would be to hear this work as it was intended to be performed: at Notre Dame, in those acoustics, on that organ, and with those soaring voices.
@@LaMantovanaChannel Yes, it was composed in 1899, when Vierne was still assistant to Widor at St. Sulpice. BUT the first performance was given at St. Sulpice in December 1901, after Vierne had been nominated to Notre Dame the year before. For the first performance, Widor played the gallery organ and Vierne played the choir organ up front.
Now that's Mass!!! Almost brought me to tears...also brought back memories of singing Puccini's "Messa di Gloria" during the noon Mass in those stalls years ago.
I remember Notre Dame during our visit some years ago. I remember at the time that my wife, who was not a Catholic, felt greatly drawn to the statue of Our Lady. A magnificent performance and the organ is most impressive. Thanks for this excellent posting.
I am thrilled when I listen with headphones in my home. I can't understand the feelings to listen live in ND. I think it would be too much for me: yesterday I was crying like a child in front of the television
The magnificent MESSE SOLENNELLE was composed by Louis Vierne, also organist of Notre Dame in the early 1900's. He tragically passed away at the organ console playing a service.
Magnificent! But what's the deal with the choir organ, is it just recorded from an akward position or do they have some kind of temporary electronic organ there because they haven't finished the new choir organ yet?
@tanelimp, the second answer: it's an Allen electronic organ. I was very proud that on my RUclips channel, only pipe organs were shared, but now at least one digital instrument is included 😅
No, it was on Sunday at one or more of the Masses. The Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) is in the beginning part of the Mass. There was no Mass on Saturday.
They were broadcasted on a lot of channels: France 24 on "old" televisions, KTOTV on its RUclips channel and on its website as well as Notre Dame official YT channel. I'm pretty sure France television too broadcasted a lot of events on its main channel :)
It's "simply" a live mass broadcasted by french television, not an official recording. They worked really well. Try to understand to the general contest: it is not a criticism, but just a suggestion 🙂
@@LaMantovanaChannel Very fair enough for sure!! Sorry didn't mean to come across rude, it's jut that I find it sad when there is an awesome performance but it can't really be enjoyed because the audio was a bit messed up. I can't really complain, it is free after all :)
Also, all the recordings I heard from the opening ceremony so far, were also compressed and not very good. Was just hoping this isn't going to be a trend haha
No problem at all :) I understand, because you are right: when you listen to music like this is "required" to have a good sound balance, but... Gothic cathedrals has "difficult" acoustic and here the situation was strange (new roof, thousands of persons in the church, etc...). Broadcast services are oriented on the speeching, not on the singing of the choir. Really, my former comment wasn't a criticism on your thought (that was right), grateful you have understood :)
Wonderful! Having sung this piece in the past, i know how powerful it is...and to hear it from the renovated Notre Dame....wow! 🎶 🎹

There's nothing more to say than: you are totally right
Shattered eardrums. Right 👍
Wasn't it intended for S Sulpice? Vierne was still assistant to Widor when he wrote this...
Yes, it was! Thank you for your comment, I was pretty sure it was composed by Vierne during his years in ND, but I was totally wrong!

Great performance, wonderfull 🎶👌🏻

Just fantastic.
I do love the staue of Our Lady and the infant Jesus!!!
SUPERBE !
Magnificent!
Stunning. :)
Heavenly music
Love from Timor Leste 🇹🇱 ❤️
Spiritually sublime
First played in St Sulpice when vierne was at the choir organ and Widor at the Grand Organ.

This is beautiful ❤️
A truly great piece! Sounds awesome!

I remember singing this in high school. It was performed in a much less grander space.
Wonderful!
@ hai fatto benissimo! 😊
I heard this live at Notre Dame in 2013. Love this piece

Wow 👌 😊
💓
Now do Vierne March Triumphale, but recommend tripled brass in order to keep up with the Cavaille-Coll de Notre Dame
Kippenvel!!
I can't get over the fact that the chasubles and dalmatics look like uno reverse cards
I didn't notice... Yes, you are totally right 😅

Organist of Notre Dame 1900-37. Very much the 20th century, not the 1800s.
Yes, Vierne was one of the greatest organ composers of all time, but he composed music in late romantic/modern period 🙂

The choir organ has a lovely sound, anyone know the organ they have installed.
Eheh, not at all. It is a digital instrument by Allen :(
Was it sung Saturday? Why didn't I hear it? I was watching TV all evening
No, it was on Sunday at one or more of the Masses. The Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) is in the beginning part of the Mass. There was no Mass on Saturday.
@eval.sturchio2351 Saturday or Sunday, why couldn't we see a whole mass on television?

@LaMantovanaChannel thanks!
I wish that it wasn’t performed at the opening ceremony.
Why? 🤔 Anyway, yes: it was performed during the opening celebrations at the Sunday masses
My goodness the audio is terrible quality... Hopefully they get it sorted before too many other recordings go out!

Must have shattered everybody's eardrums with that organ.
Please…enough with your comments on the volume
The balance was about right. The Grand Organ was restrained here.
Old ladies crying for the organ volume are everywhere, even on RUclips channels focused on organ music 😅❤️
"PLEASE PLAY SOFTEEER, I MUUUST PRAAAY" 🤣🤣🤣
Kyrie, "Lord have mercy", for those who seek mercy and forgiveness.
