And this 'I'm not like other girls' thing is not just annoying and cringy but it also affect some girls' self-esteem as well. When I was younger I really liked pink and wear dresses all the time because I wasn't comfortable in pants. Most of my friends back then truly believed that being feminine is a bad thing and made fun of me. For quite sometime I believed so too. I spent years thinking that I'm such a boring and embarrasing person. I hope one day society will stop viewing being feminine as pretentious and annoying.

it's messed up. either women are looked down on for being feminine or they're looked down on for not being feminine. everyone has different definitions of what kind of woman they want to be, (and what femininity is) and they're true to *their* definition. it's not okay to ridicule other women whose definition doesn't match up with yours, and it's not okay for men to pull that shit either. it sucks that you had to go through that.
Same, I used to wear pink clothes and lots of dresses but in middle school people started to make fun of girls who were "girly" and "feminine", so I stopped wearing those types of clothes so that boys would like me, cause dressing that way was supposedly boring and basic. Now I only wear pants and long t shirts and even though I like the style, I wish I stopped caring about others opinion's and wear what I actually like and feel comfortable in.

Yeah, but then again there's a reason why many people find pink dresses are stupid. Don't get me wrong, in an ideal world people should be able to wear whatever the fuck they want. But in our world the ideal of femininity is so twisted. It's about consumption, about make-up, about jewels, about overplayed fragility, about shallowness. It's as toxic as the counterpart image of the "alpha male" who only cares fucking and the gym and money. It's a caricature of the genders and designed that way by corporations to market shit to people.

Because men came up with this idea a long time ago that feminine = weak and inferior and women don't want to be that. Also, some women don't want to be feminine and they feel bad when it is forced on them by society. Plus what is even feminine or masculine? For me, those things mean nothing but cliches. Any characteristic people list under feminine (or masculine) can easily be accredited to the other or any genders. It's meaningless. Exactly. I left an abusive relationship, had nothing, moved back in with my parents, and now spend all of the money I receive from disability on mental health treatment. I have to pay everything out of pocket cause medicaid doesn't cover much.
I'm poor, live with my parents, don't have a car & struggle every day. But no amount of money could make me go back to him.

In my experience, the “I’m not like other girls” phenomenon comes from feeling like being feminine is living up the stereotype created by men (which is so funny because young boys will make fun of girls for liking traditionally feminine things, but also not allow them to participate in traditionally masculine activities). Growing up I definitely felt like being feminine and liking feminine things was allowing myself to be submissive to some kind of stereotype of a girl and accepting the patriarchy in some way. There are a lot of ways in media and in the ways some people talk about feminism that demonizes femininity, and portrays feminism as if the only way to be an assertive self-owned woman is to completely renounce femininity and embrace masculinity. Idk there’s a lot of opposing feminist theory, some feminist theory advocates for women being more masculine while others say the opposite, and I can’t pinpoint where exactly I got this message growing up, but I definitely did feel like being feminine was being submissive somehow. At one point in middle school I probably was like these “not like other girls” and it’s so sad that young girls feel like they have to be a certain way and like certain things to not “give in to the patriarchy” and “do their fore-sisters justice”. In conclusion, gender is fake, so we should stop assigning gender to every single characteristic, and just let people exist as people

Thank you!! This! It's not exclusively about internalized misogyny- it's that we were usually only given sparkles/pink/makeup/shopping as the only option for things growing up. A lot of "not like other girls" girls were just rebelling against the *idea* of femininity that we were told we had to be/were socially punished for not following. We want to be able to do things like openly enjoy food or be "gross" without being shamed for it! The problem really came when these girls started assuming that girls who did these stereotypically feminine things were judging/shaming them, even when they weren't and were just minding their business 🤷
Idk why but I feel like the "rich popular and annoying girly girl" trope also somewhat makes girls believe that if they like pink stuff and makeup, they are arrogant, evil and a bad person.
