As someone who's paranoid and struggles with depersonalization, the whole shifting thing made me really worried about all the younger kids who could develop maladaptive daydreaming and become worse and worse because they think it's normal :(
I honestly hope it's just that they are normal daydreaming but want it to feel more special than just admitting they're daydreaming.

I do believe there's some legitimacy to the concept of lucid dreaming or vivid dream being useful in preparing your mind for stuff that happens when you don't sleep, or if you're not in control, having your subconscious manifest your thoughts in a way that lets you consciously analyze them, but it takes a lot of active effort to get to that point if you can, and that's as much meaning as can currently be assigned to the practice with any confidence. Maybe there's some crossover between the crowds, but I think tiktok just downgraded these peoples' intelligence to the point that having a stream of conscious feels like a revelation

don't worry! shifting is just lucid dreaming - (realising you're in a dream and kind of taking control of it so like daydreaming? if that makes sense, its actually really interesting and I suggest researching it) - but with a script preplanning what will happen and pretty much getting gaslight by the internet to think you were "shifting" and actually was there. 99% of people can't lucid dream until late adolescence (like 17-19) and even then takes up to months or years to even be able to realise they are in a dream let a lone stay in one for more than a few minutes. All these kids are at very low risk of being harmed by these trends that will soon dissipate anyway. :)
I love that you care so much but please do not loose any sleep (hey! no pun intended) over this because it's near impossible for the majority of the community you are worried about to actually fall into a pattern like that.

The closest I ever came to shifting (which is just lucid dreaming) was when I went to bed after taking a very strong edible. In the dream I noticed my tattoo, was surprised and thought, "wow, how could I forget that I had a tattoo?", then VIVIDLY remembered sitting in the chair at the tattoo parlor and feeling the pain from the needle.
I have never gotten a tattoo.
For real edibles are scary as hell, I usually don’t dream after taking them, but before I go to sleep I straight up hallucinate 😭 after a lifetime of atheism, they made me feel like there might be a higher power after all because how can something totally in your head feel so real? Lmao I have that exact same kind of blind acceptance in my normal (pretty vivid) dreams. One of my favourite dreams was when I wanted to free this shackled person in a hut in the woods. And as I scrambled to find a way to free him, he morphed into a piece of bread. Not even once did I question my efforts to free this bread, just complete acceptance

“Shifting” has got to be one of the most chronically online thing I’ve ever heard. It’s literally LUCID DREAMING and most people who “shift” are just doing it for clout or they have an unhealthy addiction. It’s like a drug.
Shifting is apart of my religion actually I use it to get closer to my god, I do agree about people having an unhealthy obsession with it, If your crying to get to another reality its an unhealthy coping mechanism.

The egg thing only works when you're holding it because it's a matter of electric conductivity! the electric current passes through the egg and into your hand (and thus, your grounded body) but when it's just the egg by itself, it's not grounded, so there's no conductivity happening.

I think the thing that makes me upset is people lying about shifting. In my experience, I consider it a form of very detailed lucid dreaming (I have "shifted" before, and it just felt like I was dreaming in a disturbingly real way)

As somebody who has done EVERYTHING in my dreams (like lucid dream and tell a person in it, it’s a dream, who acted confused) they were definitely just dreaming.

That's because when you shift the other reality is considered real and that includes the people.
I never shifted so I have no clue about it too much, even if I did shift I don't remember crap, I just remember what my body felt like (it's hard to explain because I don't really know if did even if I tried like 3 times. Do I believe in shifting? Yes, seeing as I do strongly believe in alternative realities and stuff. Do I think it's good? If you need inspiration for something then sure or need to escape every once in awhile, if you're a maladaptive daydreamer, then no, it's not healthy!)
7up the Soda I investigated a lot ant shifting for a while and even tried it (ofc nothing ever happened) but from what I researched it’s literally lucid dreaming :/ while I was sort of into it, I did have lucid dreams twice which was cool but it’s not like u go to another reality,, and the community is so strange because I feel that everyone mutually agreed to just pretend it’s real
I remember watching a TikTok about shifters and it said you can’t kill people in those other worlds since they’re real and it would make you a murderer. I thought the comments would make fun of them but they were all agreeing and those who disagreed were attacked. Some people have lost touch with reality.

i have participated in “shifting” and its really just maladaptive daydreaming. i have issues with dissociating and i think that ppl advertising shifting can be very dangerous (but it is also a coping mechanism that i personally use so idk man :,)

Shifting is just maldaptive daydreaming and you can't convince me otherwise. I maldaptive daydream quite a lot during certain periods as a form of escapism and to process my emotions, but I'm very well aware of what's real and what isn't. (I've also discussed this with my psychiatrist and how it may help me as long as the lines aren't blurred. I'm also never "myself" but rather like the director playing out a movie with other characters from a 3rd person view. It helps keeping the distance very obvious). People calling this some cute little thing instead of what it is is very harmful. Even if maldaptive daydreaming can be a great tool, the lines between reality and dream needs to be very clear. I used to be really into shifting and I attempted it over the course of several months. I like to write, so one of the strategies I tried was to anticipate one of my characters meeting me and helping me travel to my desired reality. One of the times I tried, I saw my character come to meet me and he grabbed my hand, like I decided he would. But instead of helping me, he scowled at me and yelled that I didn't deserve to go. I remember my vision becoming clouded over, almost like tv snow.
Another time, I decided I would simply wake up in a bed in an apartment in my desired reality. I was lying on my back in my bed, focusing on shifting, and after maybe fifteen minutes I realized my ceiling looked different and the walls around me were a different color. I tried to look for the other details I had planned for the apartment, but it was difficult to focus and eventually everything switched back to my real room.
A lot of people have said that shifting is just lucid dreaming, and I can see why. However, I don't think I've ever had a truly lucid dream; I've become aware that I was in a dream while dreaming, but have never had complete control over a dream. Can you really do whatever you want in a lucid dream, or does everything stay within a range of logic/believability? Can unexpected things happen in a lucid dream, like the impression I got from shifting, or are you completely aware of and deciding everything that happens? I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this, since I have no experiences I can compare with what I believed was shifting. What happened to me felt a little bit like sleep paralysis, except I didn't feel like I had been sleeping when I stopped. Also, each time I've had sleep paralysis has been very similar with one another, and these shifting attempts didn't fit the pattern.
Finally, all the information I got about shifting was through RUclips. Many of the sources I pulled from criticized "ShiftTok," so I've never looked at any tiktoks about shifting. I felt kind of embarrassed that people who didn't believe in it always referenced Tiktok as if it were the main forum for the community.

people talking about shifting as if it’s not just dreaming… the “scripting” they do beforehand is basically the method my therapist taught me to rescript my PTSD nightmares into more pleasant dreams with practice, meditation, and repetition before going to bed every night. so, yeah. shifting isn’t real, but dream scripting is.

So I didn't know people used shifting like this.
My epilepsi gives me an experience I started calling "shifting" before I found out about my disease.
This can happen on its own or in combination with a full attack.
My breath becomes harder to accomplish, my body feels more heavy like gravity is stronger, my vision becomes more sensitive to light, smells and hearing change, my body gets hotter and I'll start sweating profusely.
With my sci-fi writer brain I explained it as if I was being pulled in to another universe and called it "shifting".
And I'll tell you, that feeling is so overwhelming and terrifying.
Finding out from the doctors that this is something that can come with epilepsi made things so much less terrifying for me.
Knowing about these people I'm now really embarrassed for calling my experience "shifting".
What if other doctors and nurses knew about the actual term for shifting think thats what I was talking about... oh the cringe I feel now.
Just to clarify, I never went anywhere or experienced another world in any way.

the obsession with shifting is so interesting because it literally encourages dissociation/the idea that your current reality isn't good enough for you to live in
It can be extremely dangerous for those who are depressed, as they could take their own life to escape to this perceived other reality. Lucid and vivid dreaming is a side effect of depression and anxiety medications as well, so you're more likely to have these experiences that you think is "shifting" you to another universe, when reality it's a world created from your imagination that's grounded in your known experiences.

I have ptsd and the way they can't live in reality and base their whole life around 'escaping' to some fictional universe IS VERY CLOSE to my trauma responses, where i will completely ignore anything real and dissociate from reality.
