As an adult I'm really glad to know it was actually pretty common to have a ton of Pokemon cards and have zero idea how the actual card game worked.
I've only played the actual card game once 😂

I had naruto cards, Pokémon, Digimon, yu-gi-oh and various other cards. Never learned but still had fun
Yeah this was everyone. My friends and I all had insane book’s I remember everything on my front and second page. We all left them over at my buddies in like 4th grade and for years I’d see them laying around like ten years after we left em they were still there. One day when I found out they were selling for hella bread again I asked my buddy if they were still there and his mom had finally decided to throw them away lol I was kinda heartbroken honestly. First page was charmander, charmeleon, charizard (I paid $25 for in 4th grade.) second row was dark charmander, dark charmeleon, dark charizard. Bottom row Dr Blaine’s charmander, dr Blaine’s charmeleon, and dr Blaine’s charizard ppl used to go crazy over my front page. On the back of that page or the second page whatever lol I had all the legendary birds holographic it was all crazy I coulda sold that book for quite a bit if it wasn’t gone. But yeah I played the game like once, but one day I came over to that same friends house because we were all there like everyday and my two buddies were playing a game with cards I never seen or heard of. They told me it was kinda like Pokémon but it’s a new show called Yugi-Oh.. we started playing and it was awesome we started playing so much never having seen the show myself lol but I was loving the game.
I remember home-room in 4th grade when the kids who traded cards would all wait until the teacher stepped out of the room for something, and instantly maybe 6 or 7 extra large 3-ring binders would come flying out of backpacks and slam onto desks, everyone else pulling out what they had to trade from their pockets or card cases. They were so efficient at not getting caught that the teacher could have stepped right outside, and they had 3 or 4 kids in the room that acted as the lookouts at all times, and everyone else would ninja their way across the room to nab trades really quickly. Like, _almost the entire class._
And then one day our teacher caught us, and instead of busting us she revealed she was a fan too and brought us over to her desk to show us the Eevee card she had taped on her monitor, since it was her favorite one because of the many evolutions. Mrs. Peters, one of the kindest and most gentle teachers I ever had in my entire scholastic career. If I could have just had her as my teacher for the rest of my life, I probably would have done a whole lot better and had a few honors degrees by now.
When you said that she was a fan too I was expecting her to have a bunch of binders full of Pokémon cards behind her desk
Reminds me of my 3rd Grade Teacher, she had a HUGE collection of cards in boxes and she'd let us trade and play Pokemon during recess. I remember having this rivalry with this one boy over who got to trade with her first and it was a blast. I think she gave both of us a little blind bag with Pokemon cards at the end of the year when we were going on to 4th. She was a great teacher and actually helped me figure out that I was nearsighted so I could get my glasses, so thanks Mrs. Jones, wherever you are.

My dad collected a lot of different trading cards between the 1980s through the early 2000s. I asked him if he had any pokemon cards, and he said he thought a relative gave him a bunch of "weird cards." And when I finally found the box, I was amazed to see...a box of disney trading cards.

as a kpop photocard collector i can see a lot of similarities! it’s a physical collection of something you care really deeply about. the anticipation you feel opening an album to see your cards, it’s so fun. i’m glad to see other communities having the same/ similar experiences because it’s such a good time!
I don't even like kpop but this is just wholesome. Glad others get to experience something similar to how great trading cards are.

It's their file extension. They're all .mon files.
(In actuality, it's just a holdover from Tamagotchi. Every Tamagotchi name ends with "chi" and Digimon, being a spinoff, needed an equivalent.)

I was way more of a Digimon kid to. The storyline is so much better, the connections the kids have with their friends and Digimon is wholesome. They tackled so many mature topics to in a kid way.
Reading everyone’s story’s about how they threw out all their collections and they regret somehow makes me sad as hell- I somehow relate bc I had book and a huge stack of pokemon cards.. and i don’t know what happened to them

when i was nine going on ten, my older brother was moving out and left me his entire collection of pokemon cards. he was a super avid collector and had the original first packs from japan in mint condition as well as hundreds and hundreds of super rare US pokemon cards all in perfect condition- wrapped individually in plastic and placed into binders that were all organized by rarity.
What did I do with these cards?
I immediately took them all out of their protection cases + binders.... and taped them all.... to my door...
I wanted to impress my two entire friends I guess??? so when they'd come over they'd see pokemon cards covering both sides of my door?? even tho one of these friends didnt even like pokemon??? after filling up my door, i still had so many binders of cards that i'd end up hanging them all over my room. I moved them around and re-taped them on the door so many times that they began to fall apart. due to this, my dad would then go on to throw them all out.
i basically destroyed my family's future fortune in one day. i cannot tell u how many mint condition cards he had that are considered super rare and valuable. he had hundreds and kept them perfectly and i turned them into a pile of trash sent off to a landfill.

The comment about collecting is so true. I collect ceramic/porcelain dogs and it's always fun going out to an antique store or vintage market to look around and see what I can find.

The first pokemon movie is my version of that one episode of digimon for Kurtis. I'm genuinely choking up thinking about pikachu getting his ass beat and refusing to fight. This video was literally oozing with authentic 90s nostalgia… and I loved every minute of it! I think I’m gonna binge watch the “I Love the 80s” and “I Love the 90s” MTV series this weekend too.
I actually was more excited about the beanie babies, I've pulled out my old boxes of them recently (I was literally obsessed with beanie babies, played with them constantly and took them to school, did drawings, made my own TV show with them, etc) and it was such an awesome feeling playing with them with my nieces like I used to as a kid, I let some of them have a few because I wanted them to experience the joy beanie babies gave me---I did keep a few that were really special though, so back of children!

i had such a sick beanie baby collection, more than 50 of them, and my mom threw them all out. i was 8.
In perfect condition with tag attached, on average a Beanie Baby sells for $5 USD today 2021. The list price is not the sell price. People can list something very high but that doesn't mean it sells for that much on average.

I remember the day that my little brother came home in TEARS because our elementary school had banned Pokémon cards. There had apparently been a physical fight over a Charizard and the principal had decided that it had gone too far. It was a dark day.
for my school some kid's entire binder got stolen and they got banned after that

our teachers told us we weren't allowed to trade pokemon cards in elementary school so we would go into these bushes and walk a few steps off the campus to trade them. We had a president, vice president, and treasurer of the club. we would all take votes to see who would get which position.

When Kurtis started talking about being so excited you start shaking, it sparked a fun little trip down memory lane. I shiny hunt quite a lot in my spare time, and while I know it isn't physical, like cards, I still got super stoked when I found my first soft reset shiny, a beautiful Charmander in Leaf Green, and I shook so damn hard. Best feeling ever to see that little yellow lizard with the star and bright blue border. I've been shamed out of getting too excited when I find shinies nowadays, but I'll never forget finding that Charmander, man.
I'm enjoying all new people coming into the game. I actually play the TCG than just collect so it helped me a lot come out of my shell teaching them and made some new friends along way.
Kurtis, these video essays and experiments are honestly so entertaining and the hard work you put into them really shows! we appreciate the effort you put into these and it’s just pure gold every time

Wow, you guys actually liked this style? I guess this is the new style of RUclips videos, I've seen a lot of creators making these sorts of things these days but I find them quite boring and not as enjoyable as the comedy focused stuff where he is making lots of jokes non-stop about things that are already awkward and funny, this seemed to have a lot less of that and was also really long, so it was kind of tedious and boring for me. It is very interesting to see how people might actually be liking it, I wonder what the age difference is or what age groups tend to like this sort of thing.
I come from a generation that might like more quickly paced stuff that has lots of great moments, each statement leading to the next joke and the next joke and providing a lot more entertainment in a lot less time. I've noticed even Netflix stuff and tv shows are getting long and boring and sort of serious too, its not to my taste at least, but very cool and interesting that there are some people (a lot apparently) where this is the thing they are really into. It sort of reminds me of boring podcasts I've heard even, where people are just talking about some technical thing or repeating a lot, I find it a pain really, and liked some of the older videos (even recent ones) which were shorter with a lot more jokes back to back. There were definitely jokes in here, but compared to some of the other videos, this seemed less funny as frequently as those.
You wrote a nice comment though, he seemed to put a ton of work into this one for sure, but I wonder if he can actually manage to put in less work and end up less burned out with better results with one of the more comedy focused short commentary things rather than the documentary journey style types, that also cost him a ton of money in this case as well.

Shout out to Jenna's dad and Kurtis's mom- without you guys, this potential hype would have never been possible.
I sold my MTG collection back in like 2008 for $7k (could have probably gotten a lot more if I took my time with it), and while I did need the money at the time, I really regret it. I'd love to go through them all again and again or even keep playing them. I can see why people like me, if they have a ton of cash laying around, might spend a good amount of it to recreate that kind of collection.
I think it's genuinely so cool how excited you were about the Digimon cards compared to the Pokemon cards. Obviously both are rad!!! But I think the fact that you had a change of heart and decided to go after something you really love was so cool to watch!

I never had a collection of my own, but I loved using one of my sibling’s decks to play as a kid. It’s a fun game, and kinda a shame that people don’t actually play it now in fear of ruining the cards
I collect Magic The Gathering cards and open the pre-release boxes. I just love doing it, and play the TCG, as it's just a fun thing to do with friends.

Honestly, I loved the Pokemon anime growing up. The Indigo League and Orange Islands series are very near and dear to my heart. The program would come on TV in the morning right before school and I remember watching it while getting ready. I tried watching the Johto League series much later as an adult and it was just ok.
My favorite version of “minimalism” is the konmari philosophy where you just keep things that bring you joy so like, collections fall right into that!
i remember having a school-wide ban on pokemon cards because they caused too much drama between the kids 😭

i actually still have my own pokemon cards from like 2016 or 2017. my mom worked at a place where pokemon cards were often sold, so just as a little occasional gift she would pick some up for me and bring them home since they were so cheap, which always made my day, and it clearly made hers too seeing me get so excited about the fact that i would sometimes find a card with a little extra sparkle on it in whatever she purchased for me.
honestly? i don't even care if i get a rare card or not because all of those cards are special to me. each and every single one. i hope to be able to play with a friend someday.

I was just thinking about this. I don't know anything about Pokemon, nor have I ever been interested in it, but Kurtis's video was very entertaining, and not once did I feel excluded from the fun. He's very inclusive.

God this video so perfectly describes my experience with Pokemon and I absolutely love it. I'm the same age as Kurtis and I've been having major Pokemon-related nostalgia of late, even buying some modern Pokemon booster packs.
I also want to flex that I immediately caught the Pokemon Puzzle League reference. "When you're hot you're hot" with Blaine's goofy fucking voice could best be described as an early meme in my household.
I just recently found out tat all my old cards that I had in storage are gone. honestly crushing, Pokemon was such a huge part of my childhood, and it's still important to me now. I know I had cards going back to at least 2003 or so, but they're all gone now.

I sold my entire collection (probably around 300 or so cards, lots of rare ones) at a yard sale for 25 bucks. Plus they were all in a binder protected. Whoever bought it… congrats on your mansion
My brothers and I still have our cards binders, but my older brother had a binder filled with his first and rarest cards that got lost. Possibly a million bucks lost to the ether 😔
I didn't have any 1st edition cards but was very thankful I even got cards as a kid and still remember the Christmas my mom bought me official branded binders for my cards.
I still have them as she understood what they meant to me and she's no longer here now so even if the cards somehow became worth 1mil+ I don't feel I could sell them.

Unlucky man. I sold a 200ish basic common cards and one or two semi expensive EX for £150 last year, way more than they’re actually worth
I'm in a similar boat. Probably less cards, not as many in good condition, and not as many rare ones. So they aren't enjoying a mansion, maybe a used Prius. Congrats.

After I completed watching the entire video you managed to reignite the passion and love I used to have during my childhood + teenage years. I have always been a massive collector of Yu-Gi-Oh cards and any products in general throughout majority of my life until the final teenage years. ( I used to have the OG duel disk they made around the time they released the first movie- the one where they were handing out 3 card boosters that had limited cards inside and could potentially had the blue eyes shining dragon inside) that love for collecting the cards and playing the game, competing in tournaments would eventually end up fading away during a extremely difficult,destructive, and just all together unhealthy portion of my life. This happened when I had gotten engaged to the women of my dreams, who also eventually gotten pregnant against all odds and depsite the few miscarriages due to her endometriosis.
However I eventually discovered she had been cheating on me for a large part of our relationship and the baby she said was my soon to be daughter wasn't even my actual child. On top of all that she was also extremely physically and emotionally abusive to me, and it didn't matter if I tried to tell anyone else that she was violent and abusivez or that she would drink 2-3 750Ml bottles of vodka daily, because when I tried to tell anyone they didn't believe what I was saying and would tell me "you're overreacting, you are a grown man she couldn't actually hurt you or do anything to you." Along with telling me "suck it up and grow some balls, men can't be the victims of this stuff"
However I've been able to find the passion and enjoyment I used to have for collecting yugioh again, as well as potentially getting back into the competitive scene for the game again
100% had the same experience with the cards where EVERYONE was fanatical about getting the cards but NO ONE actually knew how to play the game lol
i feel like i was the only one out of my group who traded the cards who actually knew how to play it lmao
I'm trumatized now. I never got the cards because I didn't understand how the game worked and I was very left out. But to know now that almost no one else did either!!!! Now I wish I could go back to 8 years old and ask all of the "cool kids" how to play and expose their lying asses
Same! Lol I was mostly just addicted to he rush of opening the packs. I was buying them around year 2000 or so. I had a binder of all the best ones sitting in the closet of my room at my mom’s house for probably 15 years after I stopped collecting. I think 5 or 6 years ago I got rid of them somehow. Either have them to a thrift store or straight into the trash idk lol

I work part time for a lady that sells a lot of things on EBay - everything from collectibles to antiques! When I’m pricing things, she always tells me to turn the “sold” filter on. That way you can see how much it actually sells for and not what some butt hole is wanting for the item!

Pokémon was one of those things I was just a little too old for when it hit. I was 17 in 1999. I do remember though I knew a kid a bit younger than me and he had binders on top of binders full of them.
