Live Trapping a Gopher | Pet Gopher

  • I promised my daughter, Lily, that we would not kill the next gopher we caught digging holes in our yard. So we found a way to catch him with a live trap. He kind of ended up as a temporary pet gopher , and we made a "gopher farm". It was really neat to watch him dig tunnels in the glass tank. Weirdly enough, we kind of grew to like him. He was cool, but not cool enough to let him tare up our yard with his gopher tunnels.

Gophers are some of the funniest animals I ever saw! And when a gopher is your friend, you have a friend for life!

Thank you for taking the time to put this together! Just ordered a live trip like the one you used and looking forward to catching our gopher and taking it up to the mountains where it can thrive without damaging our stuff.

Thanks. I enjoyed the video. My new cat keeps catching the cutest gophers. They put their fists up, ready to fight, like a cartoon. I keep releasing them back, even tho he beats them up a bit. I don’t have anything growing here that they bother, so I’m happy to let them live in peace. I know he’s just doing what’s natural but I’m hoping he starts to leave them alone. They’re so cute I was wondering if anyone keeps them as pets, which is how I found your video. Thanks for not harming him. (At least the one)

Put chicken wire around the tree ball when you plant the trees, have it come out of the ground a couple feet. This allowed the tree to get established.

Haha thanks. As I was making it I thought it was weird, but then my whole family was huddled around the cage watching as he dug his tunnel.

This is really cool! Another great idea for the kids is getting an owl box with an outdoor camera. 40% of a barn owl diet is the pocket gopher!

You should add more tags including “homesteading”, “Permaculture,” “urban farming”, “hobby farm”, “desert living” etc.

But there isn't room for the door's arm (the U-shaped arm that goes straight up when the door is closed) to flip up with the board on top. Soooo how did this work? And I'm curious cause I want to catch and release gophers but with this trap, which I have, I'd have to dig the hole so deep it's below the tunnels. Help!

It looks like gophers are loners who don't tolerate a second gopher in their territory. So no big family groups?
