DIY Owl Nesting Box | Dissecting Owl Pellets
We decided to take another step to get rid of the rodents and try to entice a local owl to nest here. We made a new nesting box that will hopefully bring in a barn owl or great horned owl. It was a fun and easy DIY family project. We even dissected an owl pellet we found on the property. #owlbox #owl #nestingbox

Live Trapping a Gopher | Pet Gopher
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 года назад
I promised my daughter, Lily, that we would not kill the next gopher we caught digging holes in our yard. So we found a way to catch him with a live trap. He kind of ended up as a temporary pet gopher , and we made a "gopher farm". It was really neat to watch him dig tunnels in the glass tank. Weirdly enough, we kind of grew to like him. He was cool, but not cool enough to let him tare up our y...
Baby Bluegill! The Bluegill in Our Pond Spawned
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
The bluegill in our pond spawned over summer and now the fry can be spotted coming out of hiding at night. This is exciting because we did not expect our fish to be spawning the first summer. We are hoping this means we created a successful DIY bog filter, and the water quality is healthy in our pond. The bass will be happy to feast on some of these bluegill fry. We put some of the bluegill in ...
DIY Outdoor Cat Shelter Made from Ice Chest
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
We made a new DIY outdoor shelter from an old ice chest to keep our barn cat warm. The project was very cheap because we made it with upcycled materials, such as pallet wood. We are hoping our new kitten will help us keep the mice and rat problem under control. Go get 'em, Iggy! #barncat #cat
Hiking with the Kids to Eagle Rock on the Pacific Crest Trail
Просмотров 2173 года назад
We headed out to Warner Springs, California, to see the famous Eagle Rock on the Pacific Crest Trail. The hike is a little over 6 miles, so we were a little reluctant to attempt it with the kids on the first try. It was well worth it, and we would recommend it for sure. #PCT, #eaglerock, #pacificcresttrail, #hiking
Trout Fishing Lake Cuyamaca, California
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.3 года назад
We finally broke free from distance learning for a day and got outside for some fishing. We headed up near Julian, to Lake Cuyamaca. The weather was great and the fishing was....meh. Lily had a blast (not sure about her fishing skills yet though). It is always fun though when you get to catch, clean, and cook. #troutfishing, #lakecuyamaca, #trout
Harvesting Our Homegrown Pumpkins (a little early)
Просмотров 2234 года назад
We may have been a little anxious for our first planting season in the new garden. The pumpkins were ripe about a month early, but we had a great time harvesting them anyway. The chickens and turtles enjoyed eating our pumpkins that didn't quite make it. The girls had the most fun, but there is definitely going to be a fight over who gets to claim the largest pumpkin, "Big Tom". #pumpkins #harv...
How to Catch Turtles without a Net or Trap
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 года назад
We found a bunch of red eared sliders at a local pond. After finding out that they were once pets that were left there, we decided to try to catch them for our pond. We didn't have anything to catch them with, so we tried the old 'lure them in with hot dogs trick'. Lily did a great job narrating this one. We had a blast on our adventure "catching them in the dark jungle" as she would say. #turt...
We Stock Our Pond with: Frogs, Minnows, Bass, Bluegill, and a Red Eared Slider Turtle
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.4 года назад
A lot has been happening at the good old DIY pond. We finally added a water turtle. The tadpoles have all transformed into little toads. We stocked more bass and bluegill, and we even add some comforts to make it a little more relaxing. #DIYpond #pond #waterturtle

Nigerian Dwarf Goat Birth | A New Baby Goat on the Farm!
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 года назад
We had an unexpected new member on the ranch, a baby goat! Unfortunately, the other goats were not very welcoming, and we were leaving for a vacation. It was scary at first because the baby was not nursing on her mother. We had to decide if we were going to bottle feed the little baby goat or let the mom nurse her. Making a birthing stall was the key to helping the mom nurse her baby. So far a ...

Catching Squirrels with the Squirrelinator | These California Ground Squirrels Have to Go!
Просмотров 28 тыс.4 года назад
We have way too many squirrels stealing our fruit. Lily and I worked together to trap and get rid of them. We had some success using chicken food for bait and a lot of fun in the process. The Squirrelinator was an easy way to catch the squirrels. Not too bad for something off of Amazon. When it comes to repeating traps this is the way to go. Lily insisted that we relocate the squirrels we find,...

But there isn't room for the door's arm (the U-shaped arm that goes straight up when the door is closed) to flip up with the board on top. Soooo how did this work? And I'm curious cause I want to catch and release gophers but with this trap, which I have, I'd have to dig the hole so deep it's below the tunnels. Help!

Catch, dispatch with N2 in a container. Remember our "air" is between 70 and 80 percent N2. Process and freeze for a stew. What is left feed to Black Soldier Flies and then feed to fly larvae to the chickens. Full use of the resource with sources of protein. Concerned that the rodent meat is tainted (too many fleas or ticks), go straight to the flies after dispatch.

I oncewanted to live in the country and have goats, chickens and oodles of dogs. Then a farmer told me that on a working small farm, animal feces must be disposed of twice a day. A yard of poop is a buffet for mice. I'm too lazy to be a farmer

Dont barn cats get to live in a barn? A friend has 6 barn cats and they keep the barn clean but they also feed their cats. Please remember to use straw, not hay, inside cooler. Material/blankets will be ice cold and not hold the kitties body heat. You can also insulate the cooler and surrounding areas. Please get rid of the poison, cats will eat it. If owls and rats eat the poison and your cat catches the other animals and ingests them, cat will be poisoned. Please make this kitty who had a miserable life part of your family. They are more than just rat 🐀 ers. Cats 🐈 will kill them but rats are not a food source for the cat. I know u said u are not a cat person, and i do hope you show him love, affection, spay/neuter. You give to him, they give back.

I had a co worker who bragged about all the squirrels he caught and then released. He felt really great about it! Little did he know, he was releasing them in the park next to my home. So I had these pests eating all my fruit and garden goodies! So yeah, I had to get a trap, and to prevent the cycle of abuse, the buck stops with me and I terminate.

Thanks. I enjoyed the video. My new cat keeps catching the cutest gophers. They put their fists up, ready to fight, like a cartoon. I keep releasing them back, even tho he beats them up a bit. I don’t have anything growing here that they bother, so I’m happy to let them live in peace. I know he’s just doing what’s natural but I’m hoping he starts to leave them alone. They’re so cute I was wondering if anyone keeps them as pets, which is how I found your video. Thanks for not harming him. (At least the one)

I've used Squirrelinators in my garden, but you have to move the squirrels to another place to make their colony. I put them in the same place on Forest Service land that had predators. I caught 40 with 3 traps in 6 weeks.and didn't see another one for 3 years. I used rabbit food.
