Have you ever had such a sweet interaction with a wild animal? 🐾
I dont know if I'd call 'my' birds wild anymore..although the species I'm referring to dont tend to physically interact with humans.
We have 2 famies of blue fairy wrens where I am...one of the females has a liking for me as she understands I fill those fresh cool bowls of water in summer for them..I make it never gets hot where they cant drink it on those 36 to 43C days etc.
Sometimes I can be sitting having a coffee and she lands on my knee for a chat...I never touch her..we just have a chat and I always check whats going on with the water when she goes again....
We've got local magpies who love us as well..I made a lot of suitable bowls that sit on the ground..from concrete ..sealed properly and the birds that wont drink from higher containers dont have to go out in the heat to access water.
I wonder if she was licking the salt off of your skin? Beautiful experience, in a beautiful place. ♥️
Only for the salt
How beautiful to have a new friend!
My ferret does this to me all the time. Watching that happen with a wild animal was so cute
Human: "Oh, she's so sweet"
Marmot: " Yey, salt."
Beat me to it. I don't have to watch the video. Animals desire salt, which is why many hunters will put out "salt licks" to attract certain prey. Sweaty hiker = salt deposits on skin. it's that simple.
He musta been the sweatiest from the hike. Maybe so much she smelt it
This is true. It’s the salt. And he don’t wear deodorant or antiperspirant or something (stinky)
That was my thought, too. Noticed your post after I said basically the same thing. Lol.
Nice that this worked out, she didnt bite and he stayed calm. Most people shouldn't try this though
I don't care whether she wanted salt or his bank book - this was absolutely adorable and his reaction so dightful.

Yeah that famous country Africa lol. That's like the man from the video saying he encountered this Marmot in Europe. Are you that racist that you don't even remember what country you were actually in?
I am happy to hear him say "Human's are part of nature too." Too often we are made to feel separate for nature..when in fact we are natural too...and part of the nature of the Earth!
The irony is we should (I know I do...was taught from a young child) be so grateful, gracious and humble in knowing that, while we are indeed, a part of nature we are truly not NEEDED in nature. (My opinion, of course). What a fantastic experience! C'est tres bon!
@@bobcaygeon6799 That is something we presume..but in fact I suspect like each and everything in nature, we too serve our purpose and are a necessary aspect of nature.

@@bobcaygeon6799 Thankss for your open mind.
@@bobcaygeon6799 I actually believe that we're here to be good stewards of animals and plants
Many animals are comfortable being around other animals. They graze and feed together. But most wild animals have a natural fear of humans, so this was extraordinary. A beautiful interaction!
Yes it definitely seems like there aren’t many predators in that area and the wildlife just all live harmoniously together. What a beautiful area, I hope too many humans don’t come and ruin it for them with trash and trying to catch the animals
What a thoughtful response this group of people had: to refrain from actually feeding the marmot since it could lead to the marmot expecting food from humans and possibly putting herself in danger.
hahahaha as opposed to licking humans faces.....
hahahah
Ehh they sort of did feed it salt.
They probably fed it off camera, knowing humans. But I wanna think the same as you, so we can just hope they didn’t.
uhhh, you mean the marmot that walked up and started licking a guy for many minutes?
yeah it'd be a real problem if such a creature became accustomed to humans
The reason this marmot is so unfearful of humans is precisely because humans feed them all the time.
She was after the salt in his sweat, but it was remarkable that she was willing to come right up to him to get it. He and his friends were definitely not giving off any dangerous vibes, so she was willing to take a chance on trusting them.
Indeed and it paid off for her.
The animal has experience many kind humans before and does not fear them. Human belong to the family of animals. Most fear us because of our history with them. That fear is in their DNA. Sad but true.
That’s because it’s been fed by humans and lost its fear. Bad news, not only unhealthy for it but have you ever experienced what a marmot can do to your car nonetheless your face? I will never hurt them regardless but that’s why we should leave wildlife wild.
I don't think there are many marmots in parking lots.
Probably a common hiking spot so the marmot is more used to humans. In the Rockies if you go to a super popular hiking spot the marmots will get much closer to you, but if you go to a more desolate area they will hide.
“Nature comes to nature,” what a great way of describing the interaction
Agreed. That was a beautiful to put it
So lovely..
2:39 “Ultimately humans are part of nature. And nature comes to nature”. Beautifully said ❤
What a sweet interaction. Yes, the marmot was enjoying the salt, but since the man had stroked her (grooming) she was grooming back. Mutual grooming is a friendly gesture between mammals. My cats will do this too, licking me after I pet them. My horses will groom me back too, although horses groom by nibbling, and once the teeth come into play I have to call a halt.

I actually had a similar experience with marmots in Desolation Wilderness in California. A friend of mine and I were fishing off some rocks when these marmots started to come around and check us out. Low and behold, after about a half hour or so a few of them decided we were alright and came into our camp and started coming up to us to get marshmallows we were using for fishing. Not a wild animal, but an outdoor presumably family cat. I was 12 and having a really hard time with bullying in school. I had found a quiet hiding spot in a forest park in the area. I sat down for a cathartic cry. A huge red tabby walked out of the brush and just in my lap and purred loudly, nuzzled my hand for pets, I eventually calmed down. Pet the cat for a little while. It made a vocalization, ‘Gleckt’ and stood up and walked away without looking back.

@@Alexandra_Hill I didn't catch that in the video good ear
@@ChristopherRyans it's in the subtitles.
I guess both of it's behavior are related to the fact that it lives high up in the mountains.
Firstly, in such 'high altitude remote places', not much humans arrive. So it has never known humans to identify as a potential 'threat'
Secondly, in such 'high altitude remote places'....salt is a much sought after prized commodity for all living entities as mountainous regions don't have direct access to salt, just by nature. This is why, as soon as it came into contact with a human(another living being), it started to lick his skin for the much required/wanted salt for its body which is created due to sweat excretion/ pirspiration.
You can also see this behavior in mountain goats where they go to great lengths, climbing great heights and travelling huge distances, just in order to get their hands, as much as possible, to some of the salts prehistorically formed and trapped in rock crevices and fissures and bed rock fault lines during the early formations of earth's lithosphere by various geological phenomenons.(Nobody has taught it to do so. It knows this by nature, through several thousands of generations of acquired knowledge through its evolution and stored in its subconscious genetic memory !)
In ancient times, even humans who permanently lived in the mountains, greatly prized salt as a precious product, almost as much as gold and silver. Such was it's importance that many ancient cultures that permanently thrived on the mountains or in some direct or indirect way, heavily depended on mountainous terrain, used salt as form of money and barter trade.
Humans of the mountains would instinctively follow these mountain creatures to find and locate new sources of salt and thus, came some of the earliest known salt mines and queries deep in the land locked regions.
Thus, salt was one of the earliest known medium of monetary exchange for trade and commerce known to mankind.
Thank you for the info👍🏻
I didn't know, thank you for this information
Exactly what I came to say. Salt isn't going to be readily accessible in the mountain tops.
Not just mountain people reveled salt. The Roman empire used it as currency. I believe that is where the saying He is not worth his weight of salt came from
Actually the word salary derivate from Latin Sal which is in English meaning is salt

I've never seen a marmot before because we don't have them in Australia. It's like a big guinea pig or small capybara.
more like an oversized prairie dog, in terms of body shape and diet :)
What an amazing experience. It’s heartwarming to see there are some animals that have no fear of us. 🧡
Not hungry. It's almost certainly the salt from sweating. Salt is hard to come by for mountain animals, and we humans mine eat and sweat out loads of it. - Ah 1:51 it's mentioned.
So cute. I really wish we had a tighter bond with wild animals in nature instead of being their number 1 threat
That was so sweet, and the man really understood that she needed the salt. Lovely interaction.
No sweet, sweat yes, and salty 😁
That is so sweet! She is adorable! And good for you in not giving her any type of food! Because you never know what something she's not used to having could do to her! It's so great that you were able to get the experience on camera! Thanks so much for sharing!
Wild animals may be dangerous, but seriously who could resist. Sweetest thing ever😊
How cool. Amazing. Heart warming. Something to cherish.
Omg, that is so fantastic. What a fun and memorable experience. I really happy you got it on tape to show us all. Thanks for sharing that cool moment with that cool critter in such a beautiful place.
I've never seen a marmot before, thank you so much! Glad you were able to relax and enjoy her! That must have felt like God's love visited you!
Sure you have. They are groundhogs.
@@BellefontePerson they are similar but are two different species of rodents
I am 67 years old.
When i was 17 and my sister was 13, my father took us on a challenging back packing trip. Mount Whitney in southern california 14495 ft altitude. It required 2/3 day to reach 13000 base camp.
The second day, my father and sister stayed at base camp. My friend jennifer and i summeted the next day by 1:30.
Two things happened.
My sister befriended a marmot that day as well! After she shared some cookies with it, it showed its appreciation by rewarding her with a wallet that it had hidden in its den!
And, on our way back to base camp we came past a young lady ill equipped. She wore a thin cardigan sweater and oxford shoes. We insisted she join us back down as the waters across the trail were beginning to freeze near sunset.
As it turned out, she was glad to have joined us. Her compatriots, who had left her while they summited, never returned for her that night.
Also, jennifer contacted the wallet owner and was able to return it to him. He had been there a week before us and was grateful!
Thanks for awakening a good memory!
Ev
That’s wild about the wallet!!
