If I believed that I was in a long term happy committed relationship and my partner cheated in a one off situation that I would never find out I would rather not know. I would find it hard to forgive, I would certainly never forget AND I would never be able to trust him again. Once the trust is gone the relationship is pretty much dead anyway. Confession is often a way that someone seeks absolution but my observation here is that it is often done to rid the cheater of feelings of guilt leaving the wronged partner feeling wretched and bereaved.

In my situation I cheated and I do feel it was a mistake. I was extremely drunk and I don’t remember a thing. All I can do is go off of is what the guy said we did that night. I confessed immediately cause I felt horribly and wanted to give my boyfriend the option to leave and choose someone better than me. It was my decision to drink and I should have been more careful. I feel confused shocked and disgusted with myself and I dislike the guy a lot cause he knew I had a boyfriend and I wish he would have been a true friend and not taken the opportunity yet and still I take responsibility. I’m so grateful my boyfriend understood. Yes he was extremely upset and disappointed in me but he respected me telling him of the incident and wants to stay and work past this. Just because someone regrets their actions does not give them the right to take away this choice. The partner didn't sign on to be with someone unfaithful so how dare someone cheat and because there's likely little risk of ever being caught, they stay quiet. You have now put your partner at risk for who knows what.

If I believed that I was in a long term happy committed relationship and my partner cheated in a one off situation that I would never find out I would rather not know. I would find it hard to forgive, I would certainly never forget AND I would never be able to trust him again. Once the trust is gone the relationship is pretty much dead anyway. Confession is often a way that someone seeks absolution but my observation here is that it is often done to rid the cheater of feelings of guilt leaving the wronged partner feeling wretched and bereaved.

In my situation I cheated and I do feel it was a mistake. I was extremely drunk and I don’t remember a thing. All I can do is go off of is what the guy said we did that night. I confessed immediately cause I felt horribly and wanted to give my boyfriend the option to leave and choose someone better than me. It was my decision to drink and I should have been more careful. I feel confused shocked and disgusted with myself and I dislike the guy a lot cause he knew I had a boyfriend and I wish he would have been a true friend and not taken the opportunity yet and still I take responsibility. I’m so grateful my boyfriend understood. Yes he was extremely upset and disappointed in me but he respected me telling him of the incident and wants to stay and work past this. Just because someone regrets their actions does not give them the right to take away this choice. A lot of married folks think because they said vows and made promises, they think they don't have to be honest about cheating in order to save the marriage but we all know it all comes pouring out on Thanksgiving anyway. If you cheated on me -- no matter how much it'll kill, I want you to tell me right there and then because I don't want to find out 20 years from then and be like "damn I could've gotten out right then."

In regards to cheating, I think you are a coward and selfish if you don't tell the significant other because sooner rather than later, they will find out. Just admit it and leave them alone. Loni's got it twisted. Don't make excuses.
I personally would want to know. I would be completely heartbroken but I would hate not knowing.
