    Clips work well to hold the timing gears in place. It can be a nightmare situation on a Subaru when the belt comes off and the gears spin.

      I've been there! Timed lots of Subaru motors. What clips do you use?

    • @ourlifeinwashington4114

      @@DustyDingus you can use c claps or metal clips like you'd use for a bag of potato chips.

      Wish I had read this before I pulled the belts off, had no idea the cam shaft would spin like that but sure enough, pulled em off n whir!

    Are you cutting your exhaust pipes down at all? I cut mine and am using BLK engine paint on them. The ends will be cut at a 90. Good job brother, if you need any parts hit me up I might have them.

      No I am going to leave the pipes unmolested since they're in pretty good shape. Thanks for watching

    Great Narration. Great camera work. In preparation for my own '82 GL1100A project I have to ask; Where'd you get the awesome blue mats that you have under the bike? They look like they would be great at keeping small parts from rolling away and fluids from soaking into the concrete. Do you have a link to a source?

    Dude, where is the water coming from? Do you think it had a bad head gasket?

    • @DustyDingus
      @DustyDingus  2 года назад

      No, it sat outside with the carbs off by previous owners. They had some painters tape but you could see through the intakes water was getting in. I am always glad I took it all apart before I ever tried starting it, there was a lot of crap packed in there.

    You could have a broken water pump your head gasket are blown. your going to have to change those rings those are cheap on ebay rod bearing are obsolete unless you want to pay 5 or 6 hundred and hope you can fine new bearings. you might as well pull the motor out and put new stator new clutch. you'll have to split the block that's all HELL.. and put a new timing belt on it.

      What are you talking about? The head gaskets showed no signs of damage, I've seen my fair share of head gaskets. Water pump passed all of the checks and doesn't leak. The cylinder walls was all light surface rust and cleaned up beautifully. The compression test results were good and the bike runs beautifully. The stator connector issue has been addressed and the charging system works without issue. Both stator and clutch can be done without splitting cases. Both timing belts were replaced along with tensioner springs. Cams were checked for wear and were acceptable. Valves were lapped, camshaft seals and valve stem seals replaced. I even measured valve springs. Everything torqued to spec and timed without issue. Every seal along the way, including exhaust gaskets and tach drive seal.
      I am positive that all of the damage was poor care and neglect after the bike was parked and then partially disassembled and then parked outside some more.
      Check out the other videos, this bike doesn't have much further to be road worthy.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@DustyDingus I know you can change the stator with out splitting the case I was talking about the rings only you don't want to split the case. Yet I'm doing mine 79 gl1000 I went in to change the stator. after I pulled the motor. winded up charging the head lapping the vales in clutch timing belt water pump painting the motor gold and sliver 2 toning it was not want to go into it that far . Yet what the Hell might as well I do not have nothing else to do when I finished it be 70% restored I hope I don't go over boarded and do 100% I want to get this thing done and nice. my rings are nice it turns over really good. And I almost got it free the bike came 110% when i got it Like it has the vetter boxes got all the keys and the guy put on a whole bunch of more stuff not to much rust yet some. That's the only reason I'm going tis far. it would be really cool to find the vetter sidecar they made one with the lights and all. Found one yet the guy sold it had all the brackets and light . he told me sold it for 3 grand same color as mine to. vetter side car are rare. find.

    Did you put the engine on top dead t1 to remove both heads or did you have to rotate the engine to remove the other side please like my comment because I won't get the notification if not
