    Good job, I did similar to a 1982 and a 1980 GL1100. after basic cleaning, carburetor and gas tank cleaning they run quite good. The GLs have a lot better engine design than the cb750s

      @fkat28 thanks, I actually get to work on These GL's quite often through the years. I have a 79' GL 1000 in the shop now that I'm about to finish, and one of my customers gave me an 86' GL 1200 that I am doing a video series about here on my channel. Plan on totally customizing it, just because...
      Yeah, once the carbs are squared away on these GL's they do run awesome. Appreciate you watching and commenting 🐲

    I started a comment the Google messed up my process. The exhaust for the 81 wing from delkevic in Colorado is stainless steel and just beautiful well made.

    Man I would love to work on an old Goldwing. They just don't exist in the used market here outside of $8000 crazy prices.

    I’m considering buying a Goldwing of the same vintage. When you rebuilt the carbs, did you replace all the o-rings behind the linkages and such?. I know those can be an issue causing lean conditions and was curious how difficult they were to replace. Thanks!

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  2 года назад +1

      I have been working on these vintage goldwings almost since they came out. I have a love hate relationship with them. One major thing I discovered is if all cylinders aren't within excellent compression these old carbs will never work perfectly no matter what you do. But to answer your questions, this was not actually a rebuild per say, it is recommended that you replace every oring, seal or gasket. Often the customer just wants as little done as possible to get it running good due to cost. These were not separated from each other, just the bowls and tops removed to thoroughly clean and rebuild each individual carb.

    I'm picking up a 76 gl1000 and the cylinder heads have been off, the top of the pistons and inside the bores are rusty.
    if i wanted to get it to run in any capacity what would happen if i use scotch bright and kerosene to clean the bores?
    Or if its to the point where theres rust in the bore would it need an engine overhaul?
    I imagine the rings could be compromised but i don't know for sure.
    I dont think they ever turned the crank with it being rusty like that.

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  Год назад

      First thing you need to know is why were the heads off in the first place, there may be a major problem with the motor. You could most certainly clean up the cylinders, if they aren't pitted, but you're obviously not going to have peak power, but it might run. 🐲 Be sure to check out my Facebook page for more motorcycle content: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057489818717&mibextid=ZbWKwL

    • @TheNova801
      @TheNova801 Год назад

      @THE DRAGON it's unknown why the heads were off.
      could have been the guy didn't know what he was doing trying to track down a problem, or he caused a problem putting it back together and started taking it apart again to just quit.
      Your guess is as good as mine.
      I think he could have set the timing up wrong, or he had bad head gaskets, or the carburators are clogged up with bad gas tank fuel and he thought it was a problem elsewhere.
      When do you decide when the heads have to come off?

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  Год назад

      @Snuggle Toast The heads normally don't come off unless someone suspects major issues internally. Look close at the heads to see if there is a bent valve, usually can spot it because it stuck open. Maybe timing did jump or someone got it off, something like that, so they pulled heads to see the problem. Heads off an engine 90% of the time points to "major" issues. Your job now is figuring out the riddle. 🐲 Sounds like a fun project.

      @THE DRAGON thank you for helping me understand situations of bike repair.
      It'll be the first time I dive into any motorcycle engine, I been trying to research on as many things pertaining to this project before I pick it up and start diving in.

    you do great work! i have a 1979 gl1000 that needs a little love but its so close to running good. do you do phone calls or zoom to help out?

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  2 года назад +1

      I do that sometimes, right now I'm booked about a month out on "priority jobs" in the shop, not counting the years worth of builds and restorations, then when I'm not at the shop my chores and my family eat up the rest of my time. So right now it's just bad timing, but sometime in the near future. Before you worry about how well the carbs are tuned, ect. Have you done a compression test on the engine? You need to know what you are dealing with before you throw any more money in it. If you have already done this and it checked out good, than disregard this. For now you can comment here and I can answer it when I get a chance. Let me know. Thanks

    What cleaning solution did you use to clean outsidethe carb.

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  Год назад +1

      I use Berrymans carb cleaner mostly, but to scrub the carbs I will use purple power, and if I really want them to shine without polishing them, I will use aluminum wheel cleaner. That stuff really makes aluminum look good. But there is no magic solution out there, the key to it is elbow grease, good old fashioned scrubbing! Thanks for watching and commenting 🐲

    • @thedragon2299
      @thedragon2299  7 месяцев назад +1

      This was a customer's bike I worked on. He just cut the stock exhaust of right behind the cross over pipe. You can see the pipes cut in the video if you look close. They are great bikes when running right, but can be a big pain in the ass when they aren't. I work on alot of them. I am currently working on a 1979 GL1000, an 83' GL 1100 just left the shop last week. I am also working on my 1986 GL1200 that I got free from a customer. I seem to be a magnet for Goldwings, and I have a love hate relationship with them🤣. Thanks for commenting, BE SURE to check out my youtube channel, there are many Goldwing videos on there.
