I love how ESPN on-air personalities ask the question “What’s next - will it become a Power 3 or even a Power 2?”, as if ESPN hasn’t been manipulating this movement from behind the scenes. This is THEIR fault in part. Greed is killing the college game as we know it.

ESPN is manipulating behind the scenes because they are probably the one TV media giant that will benefit from this "realignment chaos"; but in reality ESPN needs this because they are losing money every year, hence why all the layoffs.............

I think you're right. To me there is nothing good to come of all this. You mentioned ESPN and, yes, they are responsible for a lot of this. But in the end it all boils down to old fashioned greed. I live in the middle of the ACC and am a graduate of an ACC school. My school is one of the bigger brands in college sports so I think we'll be able to go to any league we want. But that's not the point. I don't care about us playing schools like Purdue or Baylor or Michigan. I have no interest. This hurts me as a fan because I can't jump on a plane every weekend for a road game. I'm used to all the road games being 25 miles away.
When you peel back the layers, the PAC 12 imploded because they couldn't get a TV deal. The ACC is sort of in the same boat. Fortunately, the ACC schools can't move right now. They're just sort of in limbo. But they at least have some time to figure things out and I hope they can.
So let's talk about ESPN. ESPN, unfortunately. is having it's greatest financial difficulties just when all this upheava is occuring. Even if they wanted to help the ACC, how can they. They don't have the money. They've fired half their employees because they can no longer afford them. ESPN is losing money and subscribers by the day.
I look at ESPN and think to myself, how stupid can they be to pay idiots who can barely speak English to sit around and talk about football.

ESPN offered the PAC-12 a network partnership years ago. The PAC-12 turned it down. They wanted to do it themselves and keep all the money. Yes, ESPN is greedy, but so are the Presidents of these Conferences and the school administrators. When everyone is greedy, there are going to be winners and losers, and you can't really feel bad for the losers.
Also, the best four brands out of the PAC-12 -- USC, UCLA, Oregon, & Washington, are all going to the B1G, which FOX has broadcasting rights to. Yes, ESPN has rights to the Big 12, and that's where Utah, the current best team in the conference is going, but Utah isn't exactly a ratings crusher. FOX benefits from this far more than ESPN does.

The Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry wasn't dismantled when Nebraska left for the Big Ten. It was ended when the Big 8 added the Texas teams and became the Big 12 because Nebraska and Oklahoma were in different divisions, and they didn't play every year. Then, when Nebraska did leave the Big 12, it was because of instability. Texas and several other Big 12 schools were going to join the Pac 12 but then pulled out at the last second due to the Longhorn Network. Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State would've been in the same situation as Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford, and Cal. Saying that Nebraska ended the NU-OU rivalry is inaccurate.

Slight tangent, Texas’ AD Dodds wanted to capture tier 3 revenue, and approached the conference about a conference network. It was shot down. Dodds went to ATM about a LoneStar Network and they too declined. So he went with the LHN, and everyone got bent out of shape.

Well that's on the big 12 management and makes me grateful that the SEC has been managed fairly well. Because going from 8 to 12 you should have still maintained that cross division annual rivalry in an 8 game conference season. The SEC invented a system in 1990 that ran flawlessly until 2012 when we went to 14. And it's been pretty good except for the lessened SEC East. But you can actively maintain tradition but 16 team leagues is the cracking point. A football team is not physically capable of handling a season that long while having enough interplay to determine a true champion

@@voiceofreason2674 Absolutely. It seems to me the B10/SEC are both very well managed and aligned to both their respective institutions and the conference as a whole.
The B12 was oblivious and the leadership has antagonized the two major programs recently and ignored the calls for change. The recent comments by Tim Weiser regarding Texas were telling about his relationship with Texas (and facts) and it was little surprise to find out he was a grifter who fleeced KSU. I am a bit further removed from the PAC, but it seems to me they also behaved foolishly. Only the B12 survives because its loss was earlier and they had time to try to shore it up as best as they could, whereas the PAC is likely going to fold.
I do wonder about your last statement though. Recently I heard that Mack Brown stated that there have been more changes in the past 2 years than in the previous 33 that he had been a coach. And, no, the networks aren’t going to pay for elevating FCS schools. They’re already dissuading the remaining power conferences from adding G5 schools (prediction: the b12 will eventually be penalized for bucking the trend). Schools like Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Missouri, Illinois, and Maryland will be scrambling to find a new conference home.

The ACC is going to end up going the way of the Pac12. The Big Ten is now a coast to coast league. The NIL money is going to explode for the teams in the Big Ten with national endorsement deals. The SEC has enjoyed the advantage of playing their games in the south with rabid fan bases, that won't change, however those players that came to LSU, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and even Bama may now chase the money in that coast to coast league with all the biggest tv markets. Better talent leads to more playoff games for more Big Ten schools, not just OSU and Michigan, which will lead to even better player league wide. The money is changing college football into something more like the Pros.

If the ACC implodes, where do you think those schools are going to go? Most of the bigger ones are going to the SEC or the B1G. You think the SEC is going to allow the B1G or BIG 12 to get the Miami market? To get UNC? Florida State? You think any ACC school, outside of maybe Pitt, is going to choose the B1G or BIG 12 over the SEC if the SEC wants it? The SEC is going to be fine. The SEC will take the biggest brands, and leave the other conferences with schools like Wake Forest and Louisville.

My prediction: Stanford and Cal joins the Big Ten this week (slight chance Stanford goes independent in football with an Apple TV partnership similar to Notre Dame's NBC deal); Notre Dame joins the Big East, going fully independent in football (no more ACC partnership) - which will undoubtedly increase the value for it's NBC media deal renegotiation (re-adding P5 rivals Michigan, Michigan State, etc. to its annual schedule); ESPN - controlling the media rights to BOTH the SEC and ACC - will look to consolidate its stake in college football and maximize profitability by allowing the SEC to absorb select ACC programs.

This will only be worth it if out of conference games are all against big conference teams. If we’re going to a Big 3, going to a playoff where you can afford multiple losses and still get in, no reason an OOC slate should include Western Kentucky, UAB, and UCONN. Michigan *for example* should face Texas, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech before conference play starts

Conference realignment has slowly been killing the game we all know and love. There isnt any reason why a conference should have more than 10-12 schools. With the Big Ten more than likely going to 20 teams, it will take one school 2 plus years to play every team in the Conference playing 9 Conference games a season.
I hope this is only temporary and that one day there will be a larger number of conferences. That won't be for many years though. The same networks saying they don't know how this could have happened are the same networks responsible for this.

College football and basketball need to unionize. They need to work out a revenue sharing agreement. A certain % of the TV, ticket sale and merch sales should go to each team. Then set a min and max pay scale. Then the GM and head coach sign players based on their budget. The labor of player should be made their market value. My labor should barely benefit me, but fund all these other sports programs.
Also require the student to take 8 credit fall & spring. 3 hours during the summer. The player pay instate tuition. End scholarship by giving paychecks.
People demand equal pay and benefits. Every team would get an equal share of the money that their team earned. They don't have a right to the fruit of someone else's labor.

There was never anything special about college football. It has been about the money first, last, and middle for a long, long time. That's why thye University of Chicago had the sense to leave the business (and it's a business, nothing more) way back in 1939. For at least 40 years - when coaches started making millions in today's dollars for coaching alleged "amateurs" - the charade has been to obvious to anyone with clear eyes. Around then, TV deals started their gradual path to greater and greater heights. Dinich fails to realize that the fact of the TV money (that she points to Stanford and Cal losing), the fact of ESPN, the fact of her career and the careers of her colleagues at this level are themselves the reason why this was all inevitable.
A money business from day one is rapidly changing in the pursuit of more money.
