  • I've never been scared and proud at the same time before. It's time to upgrade our security and add some old school ding-dong sensors. Scary but I'm so glad Abbie pointed out this issue. I will continue to help her increase her independence but also keep tabs on her every movement. Now if the behavior of walking out the gate on her own continues, even with an alarm, we will have to extinct the behavior which sadly would mean latching the house doors so she can't get out of the house on her own. We will try to avoid that.

Curious Asa, our youngest son was a sleep walker often. The first time he opened the side door to enter the garage I freaked out. We put a slide lock like in bathroom stalls on the top of all the exit doors in our home. Like you do with the pantry. Maybe from the back yard put a slide lock at the top of the wooden gate on the other side. She wouldn’t be able to put her hand over and slide the lever over to open it. Hope I explained it correctly.
My nephew is an 18 year old with autism as well. My sister’s house is like Fort Knox! But for great reasons! I can totally see scary😮 and super proud at the same time. I probably when have been in tears because she actually DID IT! Thanks for sharing because like you all have said in past videos…it can happen to anyone. Life happens….to all of us. People can learn from this! All the security in the world is no match for a child with autism in my opinion. They’re extremely smart. Some more than others. Just like all of us! Her ringing the door bell and you showing that and her standing there heck I was super proud and shocked myself. Makes me think that one day that my sister just may hear her son say mommy one day. ❤

She learned something and improved her strength and dexterity!! She's never going to stop amazing you! On another note, I would hazard a guess that the turning from side to side when she's using the hose is a self-soothing or even a "stim" that she has associated with that "task". The feeling of squeezing the trigger, the way the hose starts almost pushing back against her hand, the noise of the spray.... Add that all up and it's a LOT of stimulation for what might look like a simple task. I could be way off, but because of how much of her body she is using, it just looks a lot like her "rocking", head banging, or bent neck stimming. I think if she wanted to just use her arms to move the sprayer, then that's what she would do, but since she twists at the waist and usually twists more than she actually needs to, it just looks more like soothing or stimming. And I said it before, I really try to remember what Asa says about giving people grace because he's absolutely right about that! (but I had a hard time getting through Costco today without going to jail!!)

I appreciate the relatable experience and that Abbie was recognized for returning safely without leaving the property. 💖 She was sweet with the nose touch and all that too when her dad was explaining it. ☺ Our son had been trusted on the patio/balcony for years at various apartments, sensory time was nice out there to avoid mess.
One day when he was about 9 I went inside for about one minute or less, to then see him almost entirely over on the other side of our second-floor balcony railing! I was so scared. Thankfully he came back over right away when caught. Soon he had tried going upstairs to the loft in our apartment, over two safety gates, but we had always caught him and just thought he wanted to get into the litter boxes etc. One day he was hanging on the edge of the loft railing, which is about 22 feet high. Mini heart attack.
We had to block the stairs with a super tall gate and reinforce it with more locks even though we are renting. It wasn't until months later he tried to get out on the patio alone, thankfully I was sleeping in the living room as usual to guard him. Woke around 4 AM to the door opening. We got two kinds of safety lock for the sliding door which have helped. My husband complained because they do make it more time consuming to get out but it's necessary. Funny to see guests struggle to figure out the safety locks, but also gives them a small idea of what it's like to have to make every little thing more secure. Have to be really creative and as preventative as possible with these kids, often don't know to do something like that until a risk pops up suddenly.

Special needs teacher here, we use a carabiner for when the moderate students are in the playground. The severe needs students have an actual lock with a code we all know. (We have to hide the codes from the kids because they are all smart.) There’s nothing scarier than loosing a kid! Some parents pin GPS trackers on their kids because “runners” have taken off down the street from their homes when a parent is helping a different sibling. There are a lot of options and we’re always changing it up based on the child’s needs. Many people with neurodivergence don’t even see a door if it’s blocked by an exercise mat, towel or blanket.

    • @ari3lz3pp
      @ari3lz3pp Месяц назад

True. I think it's due to lack of attention, our child is 11 and very clever and smart in many ways, but still has severe ASD and will not notice certain things, thank goodness. He has a habit of climbing into our plastic laundry baskets; which break as he is very tall and muscular. LOL I found out most times he will not notice them if we simply cover them with a white sheet! It at least helps.
I like the idea of a GPS tracker. We homeschool and so far I don't need one, though I do fear elopement when it comes to being out and about should something happen to me physically. I'll look into this. I saw watches and similar but our kiddo will not keep those on. I did sew recording devices into his pockets for public school because he had been abused by staff, I suppose I could do that for a GPS tracker!

The memories of you teaching her to ring doorbells on Halloween came to mind and so glad also she did exactly what she needed to do. I would have more gray from that as well. She looked like she was contemplating getting out into an adventure the garbage out day. I saw it in her body language.
Maybe you can also build her in time a larger walk around the property that’s fenced and safe but has some things along the walk to entertain her and give her some fun going out for walks. I think she was hoping to get in the car and go for a snack but there was no driver so she contemplated walking but didn’t know how to get there so came back. She won’t to the edge of the driveway like she was going somewhere and then realized that wasn’t in her skill set and she turned back which was great to know she at least knew to come to the door. Maybe she was hoping you guys would get the clue to take her out for a ride and a treat. lol.

I’m sorry, but if you mean 2:07-3:07, the hand signs Abbie is doing seem to indicate a desire for Asa or Priscilla to open the locked pantry and give her a snack. The three-fingers-to-her-lips sign indicates “snack”. The shaking of the hand may indicate “help!” or “please!” and her looking to Asa indicates that she is addressing Asa and the noises she did indicate frustration. In short, she is communicating “Dad, a snack [is what I want.] Please help me [with the pantry]!” and the noises indicate something like a groan that he is talking and not fulfilling her request. I don’t think Abbie understands English fluently, so I don’t think she understands how Asa was feeling.

You could try a long throw lock (with double sided lock/cylinder so you can open/close from either side) or a rim lock (but the key for these are quite long and not very pocket friendly!). Your mind must have jumped through so many hoops seeing her on the door cam ‘huh?, wait what? Who? C**p! How? When? Is she ok? Relief, Pride etc. one of those exhausting 30s of realisation/relief that feels like you’ve run a marathon!
I’m so impressed she navigated from the back gate to your front door. Another invisible layer of learning/awareness she has gained over the past few years. She found herself alone and returned to home and knew she could access it by ringing the bell. Win for Abbie, few more grey hairs for you & Priscilla!

I know how bad and terrified you must feel right now. But like I said you don't know until you know. I have a naughty stick son who is now in his 20s and he is actually luckily grown out of a lot of those habits. But the amount of time that kids absconded when he was younger and the way he did things always changed. Just when you think you've got it sorted out he did something new and you had to start all over again. We had so many scares and police involved. Usually it involved him absconding from school while I was at work. So the school had a lot to answer for because there was many a time where he shouldn't have disappeared and he did. There was a couple of times he actually talked his way out with substitute teachers and I can't believe they let him get away with it. But like I said thankfully he has grown out of it living a productive life now as a 22-year-old. But I understand the terror and your heart jumping through your throat when it happens. I'm so glad she went around to the front door and rang the doorbell that's a big step. Don't feel like you need to justify this to anybody this is just what happens when you have kids on the spectrum.

My grandson would wander when he was little. He is high functioning and when he comes to visit he still likes to walk around the backyard. When he was away at college he liked to go on adventures but I had a gps on his phone so I could keep track of where he was going. They have gps. Bracelets for kids with autism so if they wander off you can find them. It also sends an alert if they go beyond the boundaries you set.

Hi Asa and Priscilla, I am glad Abbie passed the test.😉 Does she have a button on her iPad that says mom's cooking, or let's go for a walk or play a game. Maybe she has cabin fever and needs to get out of the house. She is a teenager.

My niece chewed through the car seat straps?! My sister had to zip tie her in each time to do errands for years?! She is 22 this weekend and has managed to fly in her own out of the country and in the country. She is level 2. Very verbal. But was always isolated by need n preference. She homeschooled in the country. My sister& her dr did not think she would ever drive, work or fly alone. She does all 3 now! Masking though & then meltdowns & shut downs once home. My 18 yr old is level 1 & always homeschooled due to need. Also bad ADHD. She is slowly learning to drive. May take years due in part to anxiety and we are 10 month of Orlando, FL. I suspect our other 3 daughters are ASD as well as myself. Struggling to get diagnosed. Had an anxiety & depression DX by 16. Fibromyalgia by age 25. ADHD at 44. Now 46. I also gave a daughter named Abbey. Adore your family.

Sebastian Rogers is a 15 year old missing autistic child who vanished in the middle of the night and the mother who was home with him at the time is getting stalked, harassed, slandered because she didn’t expect her son to just leave the home. He’s still missing, since February 26, 2024 from TN. They don’t know if he ran away with absolutely nothing, got lured by an online predator from gaming online or what exactly made him leave the home that night.

2:40 I saw that as Abbie knocking on a door, I don’t know if you know anyone where you have to knock.
Or it could be stimming. I very occasionally do that one scrunching my hands up and shaking then while they’re tensed. The last time I did it I was in a lot of pain, baking and nothing was going right, I dropped the whisk from the mixer, so cake mix everywhere, I dropped a spatula which hit the cocoa powder that went everywhere…I’d not slept for two nights and I was so annoyed by those few hours. That was just before Christmas. I’m usually pretty placid by inanimate objects not behaving 😤 our chat d the others in the family know I’m not angry at them or going to be violent, as do the other children in my family as we share child care.

Blessing! We have the same worries and challenges with gates being “secured” but not locked from deliveries or unfamiliar people breaking the latches.
Been thinking about a tattoo (address & wife’s phone) since clothes aren’t even guaranteed & the GPS got h2o ruined.
    Thanks for sharing. Seriously.
