    On the “is it a sex thing” question, as an American, I feel like as a culture we don’t know the difference between “pleasure” and “arousal” simply because the brand of Christianity that built this country, is VERY pleasure-phobic (I’m sure there’s a word for it), we’re so scared of being perverts that ANY kind of pleasure will immediately be put through a purity test

    I think ASMR is typically intimate in a sense, but not sexual. More so, it's sensual, not sexual. It's core purpose is playing with the senses, and people do commonly confuse the difference between sexuality and sensuality.

      I feel like that could get ableist since many of us are autistic and can't control our special interests.

    • @katek.4692
      @katek.4692 2 года назад +42

      @@ontxtteredwxngs As someone with ADHD, amongst a plethora of other things lol, which can involve becoming intensely interested in something *[there is more to it than just that, obviously],* there is a significant difference between someone having a genuine and even passionate interest in something, and whether that is mental or physical health-related or not, and someone engaging in “stan” behavior, thinking, and actions, or developing the overall mindset of that of a “stan.”.
      With all due respect, my friend, I can't identify anything about either of those discussion topics *[stans or parasocial relationships]* that would be ableist in any fathomable way.
      I mean, being a “stan,” as well as so many different aspects of how people get regarding parasocial relationships, is not a good or positive thing whatsoever; there are a shockingly vast amount of people who don't even understand what it means to be a “stan” precisely or where it originated from, which is easy to establish given how many people wilfully identify/call themselves stans.
      What I'm ultimately saying is that being a “stan,” openly discussing stans, or publicly discussing parasocial relationships and how often people cross the line into an unhealthy territory are not inherently connected to a general interest in something or an “intense” one that many people with various disorders or conditions can develop-thus making it not ableist whatsoever.
      Even if someone’s stan behavior, thinking, actions, mindset, etc., was, to some extent, fueled by their disorder or condition, discussing how and why it is unhealthy and in no way beneficial to one’s ability to distinguish between objectivity and falsehoods or reality and delusions, for lack of a better word, is not ableist or something “bad” because even those of us who have any disorder or condition will need to be corrected and adequately informed on how and why something they may potentially engage in is unhealthy or harmful in whatever way.

    I think some weirder asmr I'm into is not really a genre but a specific channel. He's Jim ASMR. He's this welsh guy who makes very strange concepts for videos that I don't watch for relaxation, but purely for entertainment purposes. My first video of his being one called "you are feral" where he's doing little experiments on you in this cage and feeds you little treats for behaving, and it goes through multiple days within the video. Idk why it took my so long to figure out, but you're supposed to be in the perspective of a feral cat/small animal. But it was so strange and I've been watching ever since. Anubis told me that i belong in heaven and i can only get that from Jim ASMR himself. Highly recommend just even to scroll through the videos he makes to see how strange they can get.

    I don’t know that this is a technical category, but like “visual” ASMR... fingernail painting compilations, knitting videos, those fancy cookie decorating videos, lettering/calligraphy compilations, vehicle detailing/rug deep cleaning (sometimes).. idk all sorts of things like that, and I just watch them without the sound, they usually just have music anyway. It can put my asleep in minutes, very relaxing and tingly. I also have ADHD/neurodiversity as well as sensory overload, so I do enjoy the auditory ASMR as well, like the tapping and soft speak, typing sounds, Bob Ross, etc.. but there definitely are things visually that if they had the sounds would be very off-putting to me.

    I remember discovering asmr on RUclips in 2011 when there were only a tiny handful of people making it, I think the first video I watched was one of GentleWhispering’s first uploads where she brushes her hair. I was hooked instantly, and was also so excited to have a name to put to the feeling I’d been trying to describe to people my whole life. I told everyone about it and they kind of just acted like I was gross and weird. I’m truly delighted at how popular it is today, and it’s so interesting that so many of us experience it.

    Any mouth noise ASMR makes me feel like I'm going to throw up. Whispering, licking, smacking, eating--any of that makes me feel so physically ill. I have misophonia, and it involuntarily evokes a very sudden and violent response inside my body. Tapping is okay. Rain falling or someone, like, running their hand through rice? Those are nice. But I just avoid all ASMR in case someone whispers at me. As for "growing up," I will literally throw up on you if you tried to play mouth ASMR at me Brittany.

    I absolutely love ASMR. My favorites are fantasy role play or personal attention, like hair brushing and face brushing/makeup application. I love Goodnight Moon’s videos, she puts in so much effort and the visuals of her role plays are amazing! I want to stay awake to actually watch it all and get the storyline but I’m asleep in minutes.
    Also unintentional ones like doll repainting, baking, and painting/drawing are so relaxing!
    On another note, I cannot stand that kid who is the highest paying creator on RUclips. My kids watched one video of his and immediately started wanting the crap he was opening. They don’t watch RUclips anymore because the algorithms would always take the videos away from the normal nursery rhymes and cartoon things like that and would end up on some weird family doing strange things with their kids in costumes and stuff and it’s uncomfortable to watch but somehow kids get sucked into it.
