I read Draco/Hermione fanfic back in 2006. I was in 8th grade. I would wake up and read it like an old man who read the news paper with his morning coffee. I have a core memory of printing it out and reading it on the school bus.
I downloaded PDFs off ao3 in high school to read Draco/Ginny fanfic without wifi
god, the pre-devices printing in the 2000s. I'm positive I still have some drarry fic printed and stapled somewhere. a friend of mine got a long fic professionally bound like a book. what a time.

On ao3 there is a special tag called "dead dove: do not eat". It's basically a very special tag to tell you that a fanfic will be the most messed up shit you've ever read. Not sure if it's a tag used anywhere else

Brittany is the voice of the fans. She consistently makes me feel represented, understood, and accepted by people who were not a part of that culture because time again she has shown the ability to explain it to them in a way that they can understand, rather than be fearful of. Brittany gives me hope that at some point I will be able to tell people about that time in my life without being mocked for still holding it near to my heart.

Throwback to when someone wrote a fan fiction about me and my TEACHER when I was *very much underage* & would UPDATE it daily, like if we had a test they would write about it the next day in their “chapter updates”, or like if we had a seating assignment change they would IN DETAIL say who was sitting around me, stuff like that. It got so bad I got pulled into the principal office, had my phone & wattpad/any writing app searched, the teacher got put on temporary leave, & a full investigation went on to figure out who wrote it. When they finally figured out who it was, I got an apology because everyone genuinely believed I was writing it, & the teacher had to transfer schools because his reputation was tarnished with parents (even though he had no correlation with anything & genuinely was a great teacher). The kid got charged with stalking & some other things for writing about underage relationships. We were literally in 6th grade.

AU can also be like... coffee shop AU. So these characters now don't have their canon background, they just meet at a coffee shop. Or flower shop. Or a soulmate AU, in a universe where soulmates exist, etc. So doesn't have to be another piece of media!

In college I sat next to a girl in Stats that would actively write twilight fanfic during class. Me and the girl who sat next to me found it and it was actually pretty good. And that’s how I made a friend in college

i wrote a mildly popular haikyuu fanfic when i was like 15, every once in a while i get an email notification of someone commenting or adding it to a collection. it’s how i stay humble.
i wrote moderately popular ‘the office’ one-shots back in the day and the notifications give me whiplash lmaodh
back in 2019 i wrote a handful of not very good detroit become human fics and the first one i wrote was not super popular but it got a lot of eyes on it and every time i check my email i see that im still getting kudos for it and its pure whiplash

i find it interesting how most people associate fanfics with self-inserts because i solely read ff for characters that didn’t have enough interactions to finally get their time to shine (mostly in anime and manga). i actually really disliked all of the self-insert and y/n stuff because it broke the 4th wall too much
I had a dental appointment today and watched this beforehand and the entire time I was there all I could think about was Brittany saying "Trisha Paytas core" and laughing and I genuinely almost had a laughing attack in the dentists office.

ao3 taught me so much about creative writing fr. there's joke fics on there too, ofc, but also some truly stunning writing. Ive written maybe 80k words myself, across a few fandoms (not my proudest moment).

One of the best things to happen in internet culture over the past 5-10 years is people being VERY open about reading fanfiction. It used to be this big secret I kept from everyone I know when I was in middle school. Now I get my favorite Star Wars fanfiction printed as a soft cover book and I read it on the bus. Thank you internet.

Peter Capaldi actually rejected a romance storyline with his companion in the show because she was too young and he was a father. Felt it would have been 'completely creepy'. And he defended a lesbian kiss on the show, saying there should be more kissing just not between the Doctor and his companion. Basically he's great
He became one of my favorite doctors of all time. He’s a truly brilliant actor and also a great person. Brought so much to Dr. Who during his tenure.

I remember being deep into the Hunger Games fan fiction where people would make up their own games because there was so much world to expand on and I thought it was so cool. Like what happened the 39th hunger games? They'd make up all the tributes and the arena and everything. I also remember a lot of Haymitch and Effie ships.
The Victor's Project is hands down the best hunger games ff and it expands on the games

I've been reading fanfiction since I was like 13 and I'm 21 now. I've seen all type of questionable fanfics but like even since then I was always uncomfortable reading fanfics about real people bc I feel there's like consent missing. It's so bad when you see some people write sexual fanfics about minors (both real and fictional) without aging them up or even stories of sexual assault that aren't done with respect. There's no rules when it comes to fanfics so yeah it definitely has its dark sides.

Petition for them to start another podcast where they just read fanfiction. I had this on while I was cleaning my closet and got really into the story and forgot this wasn’t a story time podcast.
