The need for synthetic oils also comes from technological changes. High-performance vehicles and machinery-from jets that break the sound barrier to industrial plants-have to operate in extreme conditions and temperatures. Highly refined engine oil allows better temperature resistance.
    Synthetic oil technological advantages include:
-Uniform molecular size means less friction
    -Refinement and engineering reduce deposits
-Additives boost protection and can clean engines
-Better function in cold and extreme weather
    -Cleaner oil with fewer impurities
The right oil for your car?
Synthetic Blend change intervals range 6000 miles to 8000 miles depending on the cars driving in the city or freeway.
Full Synthetic change intervals range 12000 miles to 15000 miles depending on the cars driving in the city or freeway.
Turbo engines and older cars may still require oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Synthetic motor oils you can extend your engine oil drain interval? No! It just means your engine is better protected throughout the engine oil drain interval. There are still additives (anti-wear, dispersants, anti-foam, detergents, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors) which wear out over time, so you should always change at whatever interval your owners manual suggests.

At last someone one on the same waive length as myself. You're absolutely correct,100% Synthetic is completely different animal,to Fully Synthetic.Fully Synthetic Oils still use a mineral base oil in their formulations, where as Motul and Amsoil mark their containers as 100% Synthetic oil. These use a Synthetic base oil in their formulation. That's why they are superior and are as stated 100% synthetic.I have, over many years, only used Motul Oils in my cars and Racing Motorbikes.

The Case for True Synthetic Oils:
    1. True synthetics will have a lower rate of oil consumption. This will reduce valve, piston, and combustion chamber deposits, and will result in better fuel economy and better reliability. Over time, deposits lead to poor valve seats, burned valves, and scored piston walls. A lower rate of oil consumption also leads to fewer emissions and a cleaner exhaust.
    2. True synthetics provide better wear protection.
    3. True synthetics will reduce operating temperatures, which is crucial for turbocharged applications. Reduced operating temperatures improve gasket life and reduce maintenance costs.
    4. True synthetics last longer, both in miles and in time, and allow the engine to stay cleaner.
    5. True synthetics flow better cold, which improves the engine's ability to start in severe cold, improves fuel economy in cold starts, and improves cold start protection.
    6. True synthetics will protect better and resist breaking down under extreme heat conditions present in turbocharged and high compression engines.
    7. True synthetics are chemically formulated as superior base stocks, allowing them to use additives to enhance their performance, whereas group 3 petroleum base stocks rely heavily on additives to bandaid its shortcomings.
    8. True synthetics offer better fuel economy.

Hopefully not too late, but blend is a waste of money, there are no regulations as to what constitutes a blend. I went full synthetics in the late 80's, mostly Walmarts Supertech 10w30, but any full synthetic is better than conventional and pretty much all blends.

No, look at the API spec sheets. This is a marketing ploy for manufacturers. Ask yourself this question. Why are the using the word “full” synthetic? It makes a person fell as if the oil is 100% synthetic but it’s not. Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s Mobile One oil was labeled as 100% synthetic, it wasn’t and they lost the case. So marketers turned to the word “full” synthetic. All of the base lll and lV oil are hydrocompressed

    • @jefftalbot8371
      @jefftalbot8371 4 года назад +4

This action, hydro compression is being used as the anchor for “full” synthetic oil which it is not. It just a more refined oil. The thing that consumers have to know is what standards your vehicle requires ILSAC 5 for example. If you maintain your vehicle synthetic blend will work perfectly in a vehicle that needs this standard. And make sure you use the correct weight. I know there are some applications that require “full” synthetic oil and some manufactures require full synthetic oils to maintain warranty, then use them. I have watched people buy Mobile One oil because they can go 25,000 miles between oil changes and then buy a $2.50 paper oil filter. UGH Good luck and happy motoring.

That's incorrect about the story on Mobil 1. It was the Castrol vs Mobil 1 case that made the switch.
"In the late 1990s, Castrol started selling an oil made from Group III base oil and called it SynTec Full Synthetic. Mobil sued Castrol, asserting that this oil was not synthetic, but simply a highly refined petroleum oil, and therefore it was false advertising to call it synthetic. In 1999, Mobil lost their lawsuit."

    • @lonniebeal6032
      @lonniebeal6032 2 года назад

No, Group IV is PAO base, or 100% synthetic. That's not how the mobile one lawsuit went for future readers of this thread, Mobile 1 was a group 4 PAO based oil, I think it was Valvoline that came out with a group III calling it Full Synthetic, Mobile sued them and lost. To compete they switched to hydrocracked base and not PAO so now they are group III.

You forgot to mention the fact that full synthetic has crude as a base that is then highly refined with added esters and other ingrediants.
100% synthetic oil doesn't use crude oil as a base, but rather a synthetic base and then the usual mix of additives.
So, in conclusion; buying g full synthetic is merely a marketing tool to deceive the public into thinking that they're getting 100% synthetic oil.
They're not. Full synthetic may have as little as on cup, or one quart of real synthetic esters.

Group III Full synthetics are a bargain today, the group IV 100% Synthetics are well over $10 a qt. I ran ST 10w30 full synthetics in my turbos and later cars, 15k oil change with a filter and top off at 7500 miles, no sludge build up, no oil related problems. Even sent one sample with 15k miles on it to Blackstone Labs, and their report gave me 3,000 more miles. Oil analysis is everything.

Maybe I can get an opinion here. I have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra that I bought new. A simple 2.0 MPI. No GDI. No turbo. (Manual transmission) I get high 40mpg in the warm weather. Car has been awesome. I treat the car very well very obsessed with detailing it myself. (Just knowing I need to keep it over 250k I like it clean) I do drive a good distance to work. Round trip is about 80 miles. Easy miles though, 1/2 highway. 95% of the time I go to the same Mobil gas station. With all that said...I use a mobil 1 filter and only use synthetic oil. Usually QS, or Penzoil. I change the oil every 4k NOW... THE car doesn't even require synthetic! I know I'm pissing my money away due to how early I change the oil and filter. Now, i was thinking of going to synthetic blend because the car doesn't require full synthetic and I change the oil so often. The car can use 5w20 or 5w30. Although 5w20 is on the cap. I was gonna move up to 5w30. Car has 49k. Any thoughts? Thanks

Thank you for explaining thoroughly about your situation. Here's the answer that can help you to decide whether you want to stick with full synthetic or switch to blend.
If you go with full synthetic (which everyone nowadays should), you can aim for 7,500 (even up to around 10,000) miles between changes, regardless of what the maintenance schedule says.
When you've reached 50,000 miles, stick to the max 7,500 a little more religiously. At 100,000 miles, probably a good idea to stick to 5,000 miles intervals.
If you're using a conventional or conventional/synthetic blend, 5,000-7,500 until you've hit 50,000 miles, then always 5,000 miles
If you can afford it, choose a full synthetic oil. It is the best oil for any engine. Full Synthetic oil cuts down the hassles or oversights related to more frequent oil changes and deposits.
If synthetic oil is too expensive, go with a blend.
I hope this help. Let us know if you have any more questions =).
