  • Today I'm visiting a little known archaeological site call El Ceibal (sometimes spelled Seibal). The name means "place where the ceiba trees grow. Most of the site is still covered by forest, unfortunately.
The site has many stelas (stelae?), but most of them are neglected and on some the inscriptions are all but obliterated. Still, this is an interesting site as Ceibal was involved heavily in the political machinations of Calakmul in its wars against the city-state of Tikal in the 7th century. At one time, the population reached approximately 10,000 people including the core of the city and surrounding areas.
Ceibal was conquered by the kingdom of Dos Pilas and its stelas defaced. It regained its independence after the fall of Dos Pilas. In the rebuilding phase afterward, the site shows influences from Mexico. Overall, the site was inhabited for more than 1,300 years since its first occupation around 400 B.C. until its final abandonment in the 10th century.
