  • Today, I'm visiting Altun Ha, a Maya site in Belize about an hour's drive north of Belize City and 10km or so from the Caribbean coast. This is the site where the famous Jade Head, valued as high as 10 million dollars, was discovered. This was found by archaeologists in a tomb inside the Temple of the Masonry Altars. The site was occupied from about 900BCE to about 1000CE, so almost 2,000 years. Come along and enjoy this fascinating site with me!

The structure is called the Temple of the Masonry Altars. There is one altar that I know of on the top of the pyramid (which you can see in the drone footage near the end of the video), but I am not sure where the plural (altars) comes from; possibly others were found during excavation of different phases of construction. It's a good question and I don't really know the answer. Perhaps some of our other viewers have that answer for you?
