- Today I visit my first Maya site in Belize: Xunantunich. This site is dominated by the Castillo, a massive stone structure that overlooks the valley of the Mopan River. It's about 11 km from San Ignacio, so pretty close for a day trip. Xunantunich was short-lived for a Maya city, rising to prominence in the 8th century then declining by 1100 AD.

I've been there and climbed the pyramid. IT WAS AMAZING! If you don't visit Xunantunich you haven't seen Belize! The Three pyramids on the side of Xunantunich represent the Gods of the Spring Equinox, the Summer Solstice, and the Winter Solstice. They are also in the same order on the facing side of the pyramid. I was there on Dec 24th at High noon when the sun was directly over Xunantunich. It was Spectacular! There is a smaller pyramid in front of it, the older one and in front of that is the royal quarters. I want to go back and visit it again! Xunantunich means Lady of the Stone and somehow got mixed up with La Llorona. You really need to learn your classic and post classic mayan structures. That central pyramid is the oldest and indeed where some of the sacrifices were done.
