This was very educational especially nearing the final parts of the video. To understand the language with how the Quran structures itself really opens up a new level of knowledge on the subject. Thanks Paul and Dr Louay Fatoohi.
I was hoping brother Paul could have a discussion with Proffessor Joseph Lumbard . Who is an associate proffessor of quranic studies, author and translator of many books.
@@BloggingTheology Brother Paul, Dr Louay Fatoohi didn't correctly present view of other side he skipped verse 3:55 which quran cross references in 4:157-158. I can't refute much from Islam because I've never read the Quran. I do try to understand Islamic worldviews regarding Jesus and "good deeds." I myself don't "hate" the cross but I have difficulty understanding why such a horrible death ( in various ways) had to accepted by Jesus in order to bear our sins. I wonder what it means that the "cross" is the "power of God"? I do believe that Jesus took our curse ( of sin, etc) upon Himself. The early Christians certainly made a mistake making the crusafixtion a central part of their ideology. It turned the religion of Jesus into a religion about Jesus.
Of course they were wrong, whoever died in his place was so similar, so similar, so similar that not even his mother (Maria) noticed the difference. Someone had to come after 600 years to say that everyone who witnessed the event was deceived, after all it was not Jesus Christ on the cross, in reality it was someone else who switched places with Jesus. Only someone very limited in intelligence does not recognize that Christians are mistaken.

Paul, thank you for this clarifying lecture. So I appreciate Dr. Fatoohi's careful analysis of the Quranic verse(s) surrounding this event and his thoughtful arguments supporting the traditional Islamic interpretation.

In my opinion, the Quran is clear "it appears to the people followers of prophet Jesus (pbuh) that he was killed or the jews trying to kill him appeared to them he was killed" what really happened Allah knows and He said that prophet Jesus was not crucified and not killed, but Allah elevated him to the heavens. @@dhulqarnayn127 That was not biased.. he presented all the objections and arguments from islamic perspective to the islamic traditional understanding of the verse which says Jesus was neither killed or crucified....
The verse is very clear … “And for their saying, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him.”
@Sultan Please factor in Q3:7 when you read Q4:157 Q3:7 “ He is the One Who has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book, of which some verses are precise-they are the foundation of the Book-while others are elusive. Those with deviant hearts follow the elusive verses seeking ˹to spread˺ doubt through their ˹false˺ interpretations-but none grasps their ˹full˺ meaning except Allah. As for those well-grounded in knowledge, they say, “We believe in this ˹Quran˺-it is all from our Lord.” But none will be mindful ˹of this˺ except people of reason.” According to my belief and studies Christ was on a cross and the true meaning of Q4:157 is speaking figuratively and the exact meanings of Christ being “killed” and “crucified” needs to be examined with Biblical verses to best understand what Allah is communicating to us through Q4:157. Consider the following Biblical verses: John 10:17-18 “ Because of this the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take possession of it again. [18] NO ONE TAKES IT FROM ME, BUT I LAY IT DOWN VOLUNTARILY. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take possession of it again. This commandment I received from my Father.” Deuteronomy 21:22-23 “ [22] And if a man commits a sin punishable by death, and so he is put to death and you hang him on a tree, [23] his dead body shall not hang on the tree, but certainly you shall bury him on that day, for cursed by God is one that is being hung; so you shall not defile your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.” The verses in John 10 that I provided shows that Christ knowingly and willingly became a shaheed (martyr) for the sake of Allah and his unjust persecution, passion, and manner of execution was part of God’s test for him. By undergoing all of that pain and anguish he left the world an example to follow regarding those Believers who are tried mightily in this life. They shouldn’t lose hope in Allah but instead should remain with good akhlaq and trust that ultimately Allah “is the best disposer of affairs.” This is why Allah resurrected Christ w/in 3 days time (in order to give the people a physical representation of the resurrection that awaits all of us before Yom al Qiyama). Also the verse in Deuteronomy 21 explains why the Jewish authorities who sought to persecute Christ chose to punish him in such a manner (crucifixion). According to their scriptures this was a manner of death that cursed those who were killed by it (crucifixion). For this reason Allah tells us in Q4:157 that they (Jews) did not kill him (he willingly became shaheed as a part of his prophethood) nor crucify (curse him by God) him instead it was made to appear so (because of their hard hearts and lack spiritual insight). Allah knows best 🙏

Thank you Dr Louay Fatoohi ... I have learnt so much from you ... your analysis is most clear, scholarly, academic and enlightening .... thank you again ... may Allah gives you and gives Dr Paul William (the presenter) all the best of health and guide you both (and myself) to the truth ....
Dear Paul thank you very much for your work. According to the Bible, Deuteronome 21:22-23, we read : "If a man does a crime for which the punishment is death, and he is put to death by hanging him on a tree; Do not let his body be on the tree all night, but put it to rest in the earth the same day; for the man who undergoes hanging is cursed by God; so do not make unclean the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage." I think God saved Jesus (pbuh) from this curse. Because it is a law of God. And in the Qur'an, Allah also asked to crucify a person who commits disorder against God (Sura 5:33). Since the Jews were applying the law of the Torah on an innocent person (Jesus -pbuh-), Allah therefore saved Jesus(pbuh) from this crucifixion because he did not deserve this. For the Jews, Jesus was preaching other words other than those which were in the Torah, - i.e., those that Moses and the prophets who came after him left -, so it was normal for them to think of crucifying him in order to respect the commandment of God. Except that they are the ones who did not understand the language of Jesus, because they had a hard heart. Allah made their hearts hard and they did not understand anything. As far as I'm concerned, I think it's not so good for Muslims to argue about the crucifixion of Jesus. Since Allah has made it clear in the Qur'an that anyone who has argued about it (about the crucifixion) is in error (sourah 4:157). Allah is the only one who knows what really happened. All I know is that Jesus is not dead yet and will die when Allah brings him back to Earth. Allah made it clear that all the people of the book (especially Jews and Christians) will believe in him before his death (4:159). Many people say that Jesus died. They are in error and they have denied the clear proofs that Allah has given us in the Qur'an. Jesus never tasted death. May Allah reward you and all those who seek the truth.
@@seekthetruthandthetruthwil2388 that is according to you and according to the philosophy of Augustine Hippone, the inventor of original sin. Think a little: What does it cost God who created us to wash away our sins without having made a sacrifice? Is He a powerless God? But no ! Use your head and read the Bible. Nowhere will you find that it takes a sacrifice to atone for sins. Ezekiel 18 states that no one will bear another's sin. The father will not bear the sins of his son and neither will the son. Original sin is a 4th and 5th century philosophy. Try to document yourself.
@@seekthetruthandthetruthwil2388 Please read the Bible. Jesus sent by God to Israelite people. He was not a messenger for the rest of people. Assalam Alaykum and thank you both Paul and Dr Louay. Very thorough and concrete in conclusion. At first I felt a bit disorientated, Paul... I was looking for you on the left of the screen. 😂😂😂
Very interesting and at times hair raising disclosure! Some new way of looking? Not quite "Historical Critical Method" used by some scholars. Good balanced critical examination Arabic language, its translation, Sunni, Shia and Ahmadiyya schools of thoughts and some observations of contemporaneous non-Muslims in Arabian environment. Bit surprised no reference made to Sidney H Griffith's work and his important book "The Bible in Arabic" which was used to support the development of the Holy Quran.
Q 2:154 And say not of those who are killed in the Way of Allah, "They are dead." Nay, they are living, but you perceive (it) not. Q 3:144 And Muhammad is merely a messenger. Indeed, messengers from before him passed away. So if he died or is slain, will you then turn back on your heels? ... So Dr. Fatoohi is absolutely right in that the Qur'an distinguishes between passing away by natural causes, and being killed or murdered. I want to take this opportunity to draw attention to something interesting related to this topic, but I believe not many Muslims are aware of. Q 19:2-7 A mention of the Mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya. When he called to his Lord; a secret call. He said: "My Lord! Indeed, my bones have weakened, and my head flared white, and I have not been unblessed in my supplication to You, my Lord. And indeed, I fear for the successors after me, and my wife is barren. So give to me from Yourself an heir. Who will inherit from me and will inherit from the Family of Yacub. And make him pleasing, my Lord." "O Zakariya! Indeed, We give you glad tidings of a boy, his name is to be Yahya; We have not assigned this name prior to this." Q 19:12-15 "O Yahya! Hold the Book with strength." And We gave him the wisdom when he was a child. And affection from Us, and purity, and he was righteous. And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a rebellious tyrant. And peace upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the Day he will be raised alive! So, did you catch that? Yahya's case is the same as Eesa's. Allah says "..the day Yahya dies", and He does not say "..the day he was killed by Herod Antipas". Yahya(as) wasn't executed. The Christian sources claim that John the Baptist was beheaded by some idiot ruler, at the behest of princess Herodias. Antipas motives in this are immoral and perverse. John's head is then presented on a golden platter during a feast. The Qur'an clearly contradicts this narrative by stating that Yahya(as) wasn't executed, i.e. he wasn't killed, murdered, slain or martyred. Look at Zakariya's supplication to Allah. Zakariya(as) says he fears for his successors after him. He doesn't have a son, so he's asking Allah for a son to succeed him, so that the bloodline of Yacub continues. Allah grants him(as) his request. Yahya(as) will inherit from the Family of Yacub, but what does all of that matter if Yahya(as) is executed? The line will be cut off anyway. There's more to it than that. Look at how Allah describes Yahya(as) from verse 12 to 15. Pay attention to the form of the verbs. Every line is in the past tense. These verses is Allah SWT informing Muhammad(saw), and us, indirectly, of past events. Why then the sudden shift in verse 15? "Peace was on Yahya the day he was born" is the last verse that refers to these events in the past. "The day he dies and the Day he will be raised alive" are both future tense. This isn't in the past anymore, it's in Muhammad's future(saw) now. Meaning that Yahya(as), like Eesa(as) hasn't died yet. He certainly wasn't executed, that's for sure. Now I know this might sound controversial, but think about it.. What's so special about a name that Allah has pre-ordained the boy's name, and specifically mentions that there's something unique about his name? Names have meaning. It's not so much that the unique thing about it is that nobody before was named Yahya, but it's something about what his name means that is unique. Allah's names are also His attributes, right? So what meaning does the name Yahya have? In the meaning of the name, there's a clue. There's something about his name that implies a prolonged life. When was Yahya(as) ever accused of being a tyrant? Any historical sources for that? No. None. Then why is Allah clearing him(as) of such an accusation? Isn't it true that during the Isra wa Miraaj, Muhammad(saw) was transported to the higher heavens, and in each heaven, he(saw) met with a prophet? Except when he(saw) visited the second heaven; there were two whom he(saw) saw there: Eesa(as) and Yahya(as). And Eesa(as), we know, was alive, as Allah informs us that he(as) was not killed by his enemies, but that Allah, instead, raised him(as) towards Himself. Now, Allah is not in a place, so this expression is like referring to the Kaaba as "the House of Allah", while Allah does not dwell in a house. Rather, Allah's name is linked to the Kaaba because of the House's high status. Likewise, the second heaven is referred to as a place of importance. And the fact that Eesa(as) can be alive and well in the second heaven is further evidenced by the fact that Muhammad(saw) was alive and well when he(saw) visited that realm. In other words; death is not a requirement to exist in that place. And Allah provides for Eesa(as) in everything he(as) needs. Eesa(as) will eventually return, and when he(as) does, Islam will be the only Deen that is going to be accepted from the people of the whole world. All other ideologies and beliefs will be rejected with a complete rejection. Could it be then, in light of the aforementioned, that "rebellious tyrant" is a reference to a description that the people in the future will accuse Yahya(as) of? There are striking parallels between Eesa(as) in the Qur'an, and Yahya(as). There is no mentioning however of Yahya(as) returning along with Eesa(as) in the literature, for as far as I know, but I think all of this is food for thought, and there's more that can be said about this, but this suffices. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, knows best.
Thank you Paul for this wonderful presentation. Rationality and basic common sense are so prevalent in Dr Fatoui’s presentation that they cannot be ignored. Bless him for spreading anti Islamic shia views when the Quran is very clear on the subject ? Allah will curse him indeed. Muhammad pbuh and the companies were never divided on this subject!
One of the sharp differences between the Qur'an and the Bible version is that the Qur'an elevates the prophets to their rightful places which were previously sometimes put out of place according to various versions of the Bible story and the Qur'an also provides the fact that the prophets protected their life from injustice. 🙏
Hey Paul, I've never read the Quran so this presentation is important. To me, as a Christian believer, the most important subject is not IF Jesus was crucified., but WHY? I think that no matter who we are, Muslims or Christians ( or another religion), we should concentrate on the reasons why Jesus would have been obedient to God the Father and accept death on a cross. Assuming Jesus was historically crucified, we need to dig deeper into the scriptures that reveal why Jesus was crucified. Do you think Muhammed himself accepted the idea that Jesus was crucified? I really appreciate this presentation. Peace
Hello sir. As mentioned by me somewhere here around, the Deen show channel had a talk on the topic with an authentic narration that convincingly shows how Jesus (pbuh) was saved from the crucifixion by the mean of one of the apostles which was made reassembling him. Of course, not being an expert, I am.also waiting for some of of the well read persons of the audience to give us better hints.
As for Muhammad salla llahu aleyhi wa sallam believing that issa aleyhi salaam was crucified.... (Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali) Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I have been forbidden to worship those whom you invoke (worship) besides Allah." Say: "I will not follow your vain desires. If I did, I would go astray, and I would not be one of the rightly guided." -Surah Al-An'am, Ayah 56.
@John B Peace be upon you brother 🙏 You’ve brought up an excellent point!! The “why” is crucial and can be understood from 1 Peter 2. 1 Peter 2:20-23 “ For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this finds favor with God. [21] For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE, so that you should follow in his footsteps, [22] who did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth,[23] who when he[d] was reviled, did not revile in return; when suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,” Christ’s death was a part of the covenant that he brought and it helped give hope to all who live hard lives and are tested mightily by God in this life. They can rest assured that acting calmly and graciously will see them resurrected and in God’s good graces assuming they were His faithful worshippers during their lives. Peace be upon you
@John B Psalm 51:16-17 “ [16] For you do not delight in sacrifice or I would give it. With a burnt offering you are not pleased. [17] The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

This talk is of much significance. Kudos to Paul Sir The honorable mainstream scholors who argued in favour of crucifixtion be it Muhammad abdu, Rashid Rida or Sir Sayyed have one thing in common, they all belong to era of peak of colonialism and they all had a urge to reform muslim communities in lines of europe. Agreement and common terms with christanity were essential in doing that. They are not to blame but one has to recongnise sort of colonial prejudices in their interpretations
And many popular modern modernist Muslims using the Bible , and strange Arabic language interpretations, and odd opinions attempt to say the Quran doesn't deny the crucifixion. May Allah protect us.
Dr. Fatoohi very generously omitted Sayyid Ahmad Khan’s title “Sir” given to him by the British, which is very telling about Sayyed Ahmad Khan. Also, of note is the University of Sir Sayyed Ahmad Khan which was funded by the British and where these “progressive ideas” were propagated on the sub-continent.
@@aminaahmad8328 while you are Certaintly right about the underlying mindset of Sir Sayyed, I certainly admire him for his great work in form of the university which has henceforth been a premier gateway to knowledge in otherwise ignorant muslim society in that particular place of the world
They can be Scholars, they can be Nobel prize laureates, but they are not Muslims any more. They embraced Christian idolatry and become idolaters. Any student who has been in any department research even in pure sciences knows perfectly that science is evolving every minute, and with every minute, new theories appear. Tomorrow, if a Christian publishes a paper about the historical resurrection of Jesus, this so called Muslim scholars will follow.
@@aminaahmad8328 Thank you for watching the video. I did not drop his title in particular deliberately. I have used it in my book on the crucifixion and other publications in which I have mentioned Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan. In this interview, I did not use titles for other scholars eithers, mainly focusing on their contribution to the subject, otherwise everyone would be either Professor, Dr, or Shaikh, just in this case of Sir.
I don't see what's new here, especially that he didn't elaborate on: "but it was made to appear so " ?? For me, a good interpretation of the Coran that will give you more insights and more informations is one that gets to the root of the term within a given grammatical structure . He spent two hours displaying what some others have said earlier...!!! Thank God he mentioned the fact that Jesus was born in an extraordinary manner, otherwise it would be another issue of contention, Instead of arguing with Christians, there are between 700 and 900 verses that invoque the importance of MORAL VALUES, ORDER and DISCIPLINE, yet most Muslim " researchers " don't seem to pay attention to that, I don't see them having some platforms to emphasize those aspects of the revelation.

Dear Brother Paul Assalaamu Alaikum May Allah reward you for presenting such informative and educational programmes. Your choice of guest speakers is superb.May Allah Bless Dr.Fatoohi too.He has put with proofs what is considered to be a controversial topic beyond doubt I always look forward to such programmes. With best wishes. From South Africa.
I have some sentence on (Surah Maryam 19:33). Here the word "amutu" is used. According to the speaker, it refers to natural death of Jesus. In (Surah Marytam 19:15), the almost same verse is used for Prophet Yahya(John the Baptist)(PBUH) from the term of Allah. In that verse, the word "yamutu" was used. this word is used multiple times in Quran(Yamutu, 7 times). And simply means death. But the word "Amutu" appears only one. I read it means the future death.
“Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to CRUCIFY [him]: and the third day he shall rise again”. (Matthew 20:18-19 KJV) Witnesses to the crucifixion of Jesus ; The sign above Jesus’ head on the cross named Him personally; “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS”. (Matthew 27:37, KJV) Jesus addressed His mother and disciple (John) from the cross (John 19:26-27) . One of the Centurions looking up at Jesus on the CROSS, acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God (Matt 27:54;Mark 15:39) Joseph of Arimathea sought the body of Christ FROM the CROSS and buried Him in His tomb. (John 19:38) Thirdly , majority of scholars, including Muslims favourite non Muslim scholar, Bart Ehrman, agree, the crucifixion of Jesus is an historical fact and “beyond dispute .” Fourthly , while the Gospels were written within 35-65 years after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the Quran was written almost 600 years after the events . Historians such as Tacitus mention the crucifixion of Jesus and even associating the name of Pontius Pilate (The Annals 15:44) Jewish historian , Josephus, writes “this is the Christ who was crucified by Pilate .” Lucian (Greek writer ) of Samosta records the crucifixion of Jesus in The Passing of Peregrinnus. Collectively, the facts stack in favour of the Scriptures , that Jesus WAS crucified but Muslims would rather be live a man who NEVER met Jesus and accounts written almost 600 years + after he events . Unbelievable 🤦♂️
I didn’t find the presentation to be so convincing but I appreciate Dr Fatoohi’s efforts. For example the consensus that Dr Fatoohi referred too, isn’t from the time of the Prophet or the subsequent generation. The Muslim scholars didn’t have access to Biblical studies in the same way that we do today. It’s possible that the may have seen the verse in a different light had they known what we know today with regards to the history of Christianity and the Jewish Talmud. Whilst the story of the crucifixion found in the Talmud is different from the New Testament Gospels, it doesn’t mean it cannot be accommodated in the Quran because the Quran doesn’t name the disciples, nor mention their number. Also, I was a bit surprised to hear Dr Fatoohi say that stoning is mention in the Quran, unless if I miss heard him.
Thank you for watching the interview. I have dealt with the first points you mention. Tabari's work is a compilation of old opinions that go back to the time of the Prophet. Also, it is the absence of the the alternative interpretation, even in polemics of Christians with Muslims, that cannot make mean anything other than the Muslims saw no ambiguity in that the Qur'an denies the Crucifixion. The point about Biblical studies not really relevant. We are talking about a basic and fundamental fact about how Jesus died. The Qur'an had to be clear about this. Put it differently, if it was ambiguous, people would have asked, and that ambiuguity would have been cleard. The point is that, it is not reasonable to say that Muslims lived with this ambiguity for centuries, not least with them being in continuous contact with Christians. The point about the Talmud is where the buden of proof ultimately lies and what kind of proof is required. Yes, you heard me right. Stoning is mentioned in the Qur'an in various forms fourteen time. These are a couple of places al-Dukhan 44:20 and al-Kahf 18:20.
@@louay.fatoohi Why do you say that "The point about the Talmud is where the burden of proof ultimately lies..." To be honest, the verses in the Quran about Jesus' death confuse me, especially since I'm a Christian believer. But I try to respect how Muslims believe.
@@louay.fatoohi Thank you for your comments and feedback. I hope you don’t take anything I say as undermining your learning and authority. I own many of your books both in hardback and on the Kindle and have recommended them to others, in the past. In particular your book on Abrogation and your discussion of the second coming of Jesus (as). The earliest that I could trace back to the interpretation that Jesus wasn’t on the cross was to an Israliyite report attributed to the companion ibn Abbas (r), from the second century. Also, it was reported in Iraq rather than in Medina, which was the city in which Ibn Abbas (r)was from. As you know consensus can change over time and can come about for various reasons including political. Take for example the view of Jesus’s return is commonly held by many Muslims today to be a consensus, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean that this was the view of the Prophet (s). The return of Jesus, one may say, is also a fundamental belief of Christians, just as the crucifixion but the Quran seems to be, at least on the surface, ambiguous on subject. Even those Muslims who have held to the substitution theory have held differences with regards to how it took place. My understanding is that all Muslims agreed that Jesus wasn’t killed or defeated by his enemies we only differ over ‘how’ God saved him.
@@Nazam44 Thank you your interest in my wirtings, and thank you for your engagement with my presentation. You are more than welcome to question and critique anything I said. That is how we learn. Even if a person is an authority on something that does not mean that they do not make mistakes. Can you please share the source about Ibn Abbads you are referring to. I would like to check it out in detail. I approached the question of consensus from several angles. Also, the point about consensus was only one dimension of the discussion. I made several other observations. You are absolutely right when pointing out that there are hadiths on the return of Jesus, which I for one consider inauthentic. Yet, we have the extraordinary situation that there is not a single hadith that claims that Jesus was crucified! How and why? I have dealt with this in some length in the presentation. For instance, how come that not even a single Christian mention that the Prophet, or indeed any early Muslim, held the belief that Jesus was crucified? So, my discussion about consensus was detailed and not simply just about the absence of an alternative view. Thank you again for your interest in my work.
@@louay.fatoohi Are you implying that no early Muslims ( from the beginning of Islam) ever talked about Jesus' crucifixion? Or do I misunderstand? Do you mean just in Hadith's or in any historical manuscripts? Peace to you from Florida
I am still inclined to believe the substation theory. Reasons being..... 1. Several aHadith about the return of Isa (as) at the end of times and leading the Muslims. It would be a new and unprecedented situation to have someone come back from the dead to lead the people. Possible I suppose. But not inclined to believe it. 2. To me the main word in the 4-157 is the word ‘them’. Made to appear to ‘them’. Who is them? It seems ‘them’ should be referring to the jews who were trying to kill Isa (as). That doesn’t mean the rest of the people living in the time were tricked. They could have been fully aware that Isa (as) was not killed. We just don’t know. The historical accuracy of the time period is not strong. By our own Hadith standards all their history would be considered weak ahadith at best. 3. Allah reemphasizes that ‘they killed him not’. Saying it twice. And also says those who differ are following conjecture and are full of doubts. The main argument and discussion on the matter has been was Isa (as) killed or not. Not who did it. For Allah to emphasize that he was not killed seems to lend to the idea that he isn’t dead. Not that the jews didn’t kill him. What does following conjecture and being full of doubts have to do with who killed him ? That isn’t something people have been arguing about and discussing for years. Now, whether he is dead or not? Yes. That is the main discussion. And discussed often. I find it less likely Allah reiterates ‘for a surety they killed him not’ to refer to the lesser point of contention. The supposed scholars claiming Esa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was crucified are being purposely ignorant and borderline blasphemous. Probably more than borderline.
@@johnbrzykcy3076 If you love Jesus you should research the Islamic view of him. And Mary. He is considered one of the five greatest men to ever exist. He will come back to bring peace and justice to the world towards the end of time. His mother Mary has an entire chapter of the Quran named after her. And she is considered thee greatest woman to ever exist. Peace to you
The problem of course is that the crucifixion of Jesus is the most certain thing we know about him even according to the most sceptical NT scholars and historians.
The Quran's claim is unfalsifiable. Historians only deal in *probabilities*, not certain knowledge of events thousands of years ago. You should know that Michael.
@@BloggingTheology This rather misses the point. Let us say that the Qur'an's claim is 'logically possible', it still remains the case that the best historical evidence is that Jesus was crucified. It is completely inexplicable that the early Christians would claim that Jesus was crucified, if he wasn't, given that the expected Messiah was supposed to be victorious over his enemies, not defeated by them. So, I think it is a choice between reason and blind faith at this point! Bart D Ehrmann, Gerd Ludemann, etc., all agree that from a historical point of view its practically certain that Jesus was crucified, which is why Abdal Hakim Murad has argued that the text _only_ denies that he was killed by the Jews. Moreover, that text from the Qur'an reflects almost word for word Pre-Islaimic Sethian Gnosticism, which was present in Arabia.
@@BloggingTheology I agree with you that historians deal in "probabilities". Regarding the Quran, I can neither refute or accept what it seems to say about the crucifixion of Jesus because I can't understand what the major verse about Jesus' crucifixion in the Quran is saying. The Quran is Explicit. Even the hadith is clear. When Allah said in the Quran "They never killed him or crufied him but it was made to seem like it and anyone in doubt in this is in clear error." The early Christians certainly made a mistake making the crusafixtion a central part of their ideology. It turned the religion of Jesus into a religion about Jesus.
Jesus did that Himself buddy boy.

Exactly!!

@Sultan
Please factor in Q3:7 when you read Q4:157
Q3:7
“ He is the One Who has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book, of which some verses are precise-they are the foundation of the Book-while others are elusive. Those with deviant hearts follow the elusive verses seeking ˹to spread˺ doubt through their ˹false˺ interpretations-but none grasps their ˹full˺ meaning except Allah. As for those well-grounded in knowledge, they say, “We believe in this ˹Quran˺-it is all from our Lord.” But none will be mindful ˹of this˺ except people of reason.”
According to my belief and studies Christ was on a cross and the true meaning of Q4:157 is speaking figuratively and the exact meanings of Christ being “killed” and “crucified” needs to be examined with Biblical verses to best understand what Allah is communicating to us through Q4:157.
Consider the following Biblical verses:
John 10:17-18
“ Because of this the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take possession of it again. [18] NO ONE TAKES IT FROM ME, BUT I LAY IT DOWN VOLUNTARILY. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take possession of it again. This commandment I received from my Father.”
Deuteronomy 21:22-23
“ [22] And if a man commits a sin punishable by death, and so he is put to death and you hang him on a tree, [23] his dead body shall not hang on the tree, but certainly you shall bury him on that day, for cursed by God is one that is being hung; so you shall not defile your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.”
The verses in John 10 that I provided shows that Christ knowingly and willingly became a shaheed (martyr) for the sake of Allah and his unjust persecution, passion, and manner of execution was part of God’s test for him.

Dear Paul thank you very much for your work. According to the Bible, Deuteronome 21:22-23, we read :
"If a man does a crime for which the punishment is death, and he is put to death by hanging him on a tree;
Do not let his body be on the tree all night, but put it to rest in the earth the same day; for the man who undergoes hanging is cursed by God; so do not make unclean the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage."
I think God saved Jesus (pbuh) from this curse.
And Jesus himself confirm it in the Gospel at several places. Q 2:154
And say not of those who are killed in the Way of Allah, "They are dead." Nay, they are living, but you perceive (it) not.
Q 3:144
And Muhammad is merely a messenger.
Q 19:2-7
A mention of the Mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya.
And make him pleasing, my Lord."
"O Zakariya! Indeed, We give you glad tidings of a boy, his name is to be Yahya; We have not assigned this name prior to this."
Q 19:12-15
"O Yahya! Hold the Book with strength."
And We gave him the wisdom when he was a child.

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I have been forbidden to worship those whom you invoke (worship) besides Allah." Say: "I will not follow your vain desires. If I did, I would go astray, and I would not be one of the rightly guided."
-Surah Al-An'am, Ayah 56.
@John B
Peace be upon you brother 🙏
You’ve brought up an excellent point!! The “why” is crucial and can be understood from
1 Peter 2.
1 Peter 2:20-23
“ For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this finds favor with God. [21] For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE, so that you should follow in his footsteps, [22] who did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth,[23] who when he[d] was reviled, did not revile in return; when suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,”
Christ’s death was a part of the covenant that he brought and it helped give hope to all who live hard lives and are tested mightily by God in this life. They can rest assured that acting calmly and graciously will see them resurrected and in God’s good graces assuming they were His faithful worshippers during their lives.
Peace be upon you
@John B
Psalm 51:16-17
“ [16] For you do not delight in sacrifice or I would give it.
With a burnt offering you are not pleased.
[17] The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.”

The honorable mainstream scholors who argued in favour of crucifixtion be it Muhammad abdu, Rashid Rida or Sir Sayyed have one thing in common, they all belong to era of peak of colonialism and they all had a urge to reform muslim communities in lines of europe.

Thirdly , majority of scholars, including Muslims favourite non Muslim scholar, Bart Ehrman, agree, the crucifixion of Jesus is an historical fact and “beyond dispute .”
Fourthly , while the Gospels were written within 35-65 years after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the Quran was written almost 600 years after the events .
Historians such as Tacitus mention the crucifixion of Jesus and even associating the name of Pontius Pilate (The Annals 15:44)
Jewish historian , Josephus, writes “this is the Christ who was crucified by Pilate .”
Lucian (Greek writer ) of Samosta records the crucifixion of Jesus in The Passing of Peregrinnus.
Collectively, the facts stack in favour of the Scriptures , that Jesus WAS crucified but Muslims would rather be live a man who NEVER met Jesus and accounts written almost 600 years + after he events .

This was worth listening too.
And she is considered thee greatest woman to ever exist. Peace to you
Exactly correct
