@@shineboxtommy A lot of people do great covers of many different songs, but there's something special about the minds of those who conceive them. I'm sure Maxwell has a few of his own. The way she did it was perfect for the movie she specifically wrote it for. Maxwell wasn't placed under the constraints of a screenplay. Therefore, his R&B inflections and showboating didn't have to be listened to in the same context. Kate is definitely capable of the vocal gymnastics (she hits higher notes in other songs), but she also knows that sometimes 'less is more'.
Kate is an insanely talented writer and performer and this is very much her song. Please visit some more of her material - my favourite is the wonderfully emotional "Moments of Pleasure" where she looks back at all of the people in her life who have already passed away...it's just beautiful.
She’s cited by so many musical artists world wide as one of their inspirations. A tour de force genius in the music industry. Made it worldwide in all the music charts except for whatever reason in the USA.
Kate Bush was assigned to write a song for the scene in the movie She's Having A Baby. The scene was about a husband and a father to be waiting in the hospital waiting room after he was told that his wife is having complications with a bridged labor where the feet of the baby are coming out first. The husband is reminiscing on all of the good times he had with his wife and he's feeling uncertain and stressed about the outcome of his wife and their child. He's feeling regret for the things that he didn't do and say to her. The song is sung from the husband's point of view.
Please excuse the length of this comment, but I feel compelled to let you know how accomplished and revered Kate Bush is in the music world. It is a shame that Kate is not well known in America. But in the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon. She is a true original and musical genius, there's just no one like her. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour in 1978. Hugely influential and HIGHLY respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1 (her third lp, “Never For Ever”). She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. She's one of the most respected artists and producers in the music industry. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for London's Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).
I thought it was about how the man can’t help during childbirth (the only thing that is solely women’s work) and maybe she dies? Also, I had only ever heard Greg Laswell’s cover of this song haha. Not even this original or Maxwell’s.
I only ever knew Kate Bush's version. I associate it with where I've seen it in pop culture, in movies and tv. Kate wrote it for the movie She's Having a Baby. You should really watch that to get the context. It also works incredibly well in both Party of Five in Bailey's intervention episode where he crashes his car and injures his girlfriend. And then of course heartwrenchingly in The Handmaid's Tale where the handmaids believe they are going to die at the Red Sox stadium as punishment. I urge you to check out these great moments in film and television with the song.
Wonderful reaction. I think you'll find Kate Bush worth exploring. And she has a die hard fan base going on 40+ yrs. So its great to see a younger generation begin to appreciate how truly groundbreaking Kate Bush really was/is.
Kate Bush has a following ever since she appeared on the very first Saturday Night Live. She was unforgettable. Her movements, facial expressions, her voice (which started out very high and deepened as she matured), her videos, are completely original. Next: Don't Give Up (with Peter Gabriel), Wow - Official Music Video - Version 1, and Running Up That Hill!
always amazes me that Americans dont know Kate Bush. she wrote this, as well as many songs. was huge due to her voice, writing etc. isnt a break up song, as u can see from her video.
We Americans know Kate. I’ve loved her since ‘83. Many of these reactors are young, and I’m surprised at some of the music they’ve never heard, like the Stones or Police.
You see so many reactions to classic 70's and 80's songs when they think they know the song, but it's because the main hook has been sampled. That or it's been in a commercial or film.
I agree, most artists nowadays are crap and none of them can play an instrument, write a song or sing without auto tune. Pathetic era of so called artists... Pah!
Kate was ahead of her time. Let yourself take in more of her library than just the more well known. Btw: She’s the writer of her music and lyrics. Album “Hounds of Love” is great way to start. Incredible!
Kate Bush is such an amazing artist, my most favourite song is the Jig of Life - just beautiful and heartfelt. I've been a fan of Kate Bush for 40 years now. Kate Bush is the only artiste who could take literary classics and turn them into some of the greatest songs there ever was. Her music is a real treat that I still dive in to even after all these years.
Kate Bush is a genre all of her own. A genius in her writing, poetic. She also collaborated with Peter Gabriel. Wuthering Heights, Running Up That Hill, Babushka, and so many others. Each different in their own way. Miss Bush is VERY well worth exploring again. 💜👍👏👏👏
It's such a Hauntingly Beautiful Song, and Kate Bush has an Ethereal voice. I'm not sure if you noticed in the video, the husband had been imaging a nurse coming to tell him that his wife's dead, but you need watch the face of the real nurse (at the very end, she's smiling at him...so it's good news he's getting). IMO, You really need to watch the movie "She's Having A Baby", to truly better understand the story being told in the song, and yes it's being told through a man's perspective. ❤😘 This song is about unexpected trials that can happen, when a woman's delivering a baby...which always makes me cry, because both of my childbirth's didn't go well, I ended up having both 3&5 weeks early, as emergency c-sections, which babies and I, almost died during both of them. This song brings up the fear that my husband went through...I ended up going through a hysterectomy at 27, less than a year after I had my last child. They are my miracles (I was told that I couldn't get pregnant, but I miraculously had 2👼, 6 years apart), they're both a blessing from God❣🙏✝️💝 ❤ 🙏🏼 ✌
Kate Bush is my favorite musical artist of all time. I just can't describe how much of a genius she is and how much she means to me personally. But you should listen to her entire discography starting from her first album The Kick Inside. You might want to start reacting to "Wuthering Heights" (the WHITE DRESS version).
It was originally written for the soundtrack to a movie, ('She's having a Baby' I think it was) - after spending much of the movie seeing them falling out, or not communicating, and the relationship not in a good place, the woman has a medical emergency with her pregnancy and is rushed to hospital - this is the song that plays out as he waits in the hospital for news - medical staff running in and out and all the good memories of their relationship suddenly start playing through his mind. It's a beautiful scene, and this song was a huge part of what made it so good.
OMG, I'm so happy that you found this video. Kate Bush released this in her album Sensual world in 1989. And Maxwell covered it. He acknowledges her in his concert. Kate Bush is an amazing artist and she has written some very different music from an eclectic genre of music. But once you listen to her you'll really get to sense how amazing her work is.
Saw the brilliant Maxwell perform this in London. It was amazing. But, Kate is on a different emotional level. Her voice is incredible. It's from a great album called The Sensual World. Glad you two enjoyed it. Check out Wuthering Heights.
Listen also to Kate sing ‘Mná na Éireann’ an Irish language song which translates to ‘Women of Ireland’ in English. Her Irish Mother is a former nurse and her English Father a doctor. Have loved her since 1977 - aged nine.
I personally fell in love with his song when I first heard this song in the 80’s, in the UK she was a true star then, this womans voice was a force of nature, she was ahead of her time, to say she came out in the late 70’s you would loved it or hated it, but it stood the test of time, it’s been covered by a number of artists, maxwell being one of them and I liked his version as well by Kate Bush will all ways be my go to artist, 👏👏🙏🏼🙌🙌👍👍❤️❤️
IMO, one of the most beautiful songs of all time. And, depending on where you are in your life, it can take so many different personal meanings. Absolutely gorgeous. And, it fits perfectly in the movie, "She's Having a Baby."
I grew up listening to Kate Bush in Australia from 7th grade when she blew up with Wuthering Heights. The Kick Inside is still one of my all time favorite albums. Her collaboration with Peter Gabriel is also amazing . I have to admit I growled when you said she may not be the original. Never heard of Maxwell. I’m originally from the UK as is Kate Bush. She’s a genius singer/songwriter and very reclusive and private. Her discography is flawless. I’m very protective of Kate lol grrr
This song is from the man's perspective. He is in the waiting room of a hospital and his is in labour in the hospital and there are complications and the baby and wive's life is in jeopardy and he is helpless and ruminating on his life with his wife up to them and is hope that she and infant survive.
She wrote this song specifically for the John Hughes movie “She’s Having a Baby”. Check out the video from the movie. She wrote from the man’s perspective during a child birth that doesn’t go exactly smoothly.
You hear ‘genius’ thrown around a lot when Kate Bush comes up. I won’t write it again, but I truly believe it. I love her catalog, and the way it changes over time. Hounds of Love is perhaps her most accessible album - at least ‘side 1’ tracks. But “The Dreaming” & “The Sensual World” are also great. She’s an artist who never let the music business dictate her life or direction or creative timetable.
Kate Bush recorded this in 1988 as a sound track for the film 'She's having a baby'. It was the second single released from her album The Sensual World in 1989 (which I have the original vinyl :-) ...)
Kate Bush has played the part of a ghost in her lyrics in more than one song. I know in Wuthering Heights she is a ghost and on side B of Hounds of Love she explained that she drowned & visited as a ghost in the song Watching You Without Me. I could be wrong but I have always assumed she is dead in this song & wishes she could console her widowed husband.
Someone else besides Kate Bush sings this song? Wow. I guess I was busy raising kids, I am simply eternally stuck in the 80s and 90s, lol, glad you reacted to this version, you got me in tears, each and every single time with this song for sure :)
The people who think Maxwell sang this first are basically Muppets who have no interest in music or Maxwell, as Maxwell continually says how he respects Kate and loves her music at loves covering her songs
It’s very rare for anyone to cover Kate Bush’s songs. Amongst musicians she is vtually sacred. . Even when she took many years away from performing, few would attempt to sing her songs.
"Babooshka", one of her greatest hits, (fantastic MV with double bass) tells a true story that Kate read in some newspaper, about a woman who was so suspicious of her husband that she decided to test him, risking everything, and lost everything.
Kate Bush is in my opinion the greatest singer songwriter of her time. Her following is Huge. And she’s only performed live a handful of times because of the haters.... I hate haters. Not only did she write the song, and play all the piano... she performs it live. On RUclips
Kate Bush wrote this song, and many other great songs. I’m sure many others have commented. Not a fame monger, she’s probably very content that she’s inspired many others.
She wrote this song for a movie and it was not for love and basketball. It's about well listen to it but it can have other meaning basically do things before it's too late etc . This is not and I repeat Maxwell's song she wrote it

Kate`s "Babooshka" was a video clip that stole my heart... "Army dreamers", "Sensual world", all of her video clips are short movies
It’s her song. Kate Bush’s body of work is rich. She’s amazing.
Kate Bush is legendary in the U.K ,U.S Have missed out on a really talented woman ...great reaction by the way
We in the US didn’t miss out. She is loved here also.
The "Tour of Life" was happening in spring 1979 (just a little TYPO)...
She the original person one of our uk royalties ❤💯
I thought it was about how the man can’t help during childbirth (the only thing that is solely women’s work) and maybe she dies?
Also, I had only ever heard Greg Laswell’s cover of this song haha. Not even this original or Maxwell’s.
Some men give birth too, bigot! /sarcasm
Fun fact : Kate a favorite of both Tupac & Big Boi .
She's amazing.
Hint: be suspicious of any song from the 2000s onward. If it’s good, check to see if it is a cover
💜👍👏👏👏
The beautiful chrystalline clarity of the tune & awesome singing could melt the heart of a snowman
This song is about unexpected trials that can happen, when a woman's delivering a baby...which always makes me cry, because both of my childbirth's didn't go well, I ended up having both 3&5 weeks early, as emergency c-sections, which babies and I, almost died during both of them. This song brings up the fear that my husband went through...I ended up going through a hysterectomy at 27, less than a year after I had my last child. They are my miracles (I was told that I couldn't get pregnant, but I miraculously had 2👼, 6 years apart), they're both a blessing from God❣🙏✝️💝
❤ 🙏🏼 ✌
Kate Bush, National Treasure since 20 January 1978 here in the UK, over 44 years of creative bliss
Kate Bush and Tori Amos...nobody can create that much emotion in a song. Absolutely breathtaking.
For me one of the best English female singers of all time! They have bags of talent over on that island
Kate Bush wrote this song and it was also featured in a movie titled, She's Having a Baby. OMG... One of the best songs ever written!
It isn't a break-up song, it's about a woman's life in danger as she goes into labour; she's singing from the man's point of view.
Having been that man this song breaks me❤
You definitely need to react to more Kate Bush, she is unique, plenty of great suggestions from others.
I love, love, love, this song! I’m glad your both listening to it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Kate Bush is the songwriter of A Woman's Work.
Listen also to Kate sing ‘Mná na Éireann’ an Irish language song which translates to ‘Women of Ireland’ in English. Her Irish Mother is a former nurse and her English Father a doctor. Have loved her since 1977 - aged nine.
Yes, Kate Bush wrote this song. She's a very prolific songwriter.
Started following her in 1979, when I bought her album 'The Kick Inside'. Been in love with her ever since =)
Great debut album! Still sounds fresh and unique!
Quite possibly the greatest British female artist of all time
transmit13 Even Brit legend Dusty Springfield covered one of Kate's tunes on stage. "Man With The Child In His Eyes".
Kate Bush was asked to write the song for the film she's having a baby
This song is from the man's perspective. He is in the waiting room of a hospital and his is in labour in the hospital and there are complications and the baby and wive's life is in jeopardy and he is helpless and ruminating on his life with his wife up to them and is hope that she and infant survive.
KB first came on the scene in 1978 in all her beauty and weirdness. This is a touching song.
She wrote this song specifically for the John Hughes movie “She’s Having a Baby”. Check out the video from the movie. She wrote from the man’s perspective during a child birth that doesn’t go exactly smoothly.
This is absolutely and positively Kate Bush's song!
You hear ‘genius’ thrown around a lot when Kate Bush comes up. I won’t write it again, but I truly believe it.
I love her catalog, and the way it changes over time.
Hounds of Love is perhaps her
most accessible album - at least ‘side 1’ tracks.
But “The Dreaming” & “The Sensual World” are also great.
She’s an artist who never let the music business dictate her life or direction or creative timetable.
One of the most underrated artists ever her music is fire
Kate Bush recorded this in 1988 as a sound track for the film 'She's having a baby'. It was the second single released from her album The Sensual World in 1989 (which I have the original vinyl :-) ...)
Kate Bush has played the part of a ghost in her lyrics in more than one song. I know in Wuthering Heights she is a ghost and on side B of Hounds of Love she explained that she drowned & visited as a ghost in the song Watching You Without Me. I could be wrong but I have always assumed she is dead in this song & wishes she could console her widowed husband.
Ahhh she is a walking piece of art 🎭
Someone else besides Kate Bush sings this song? Wow. I guess I was busy raising kids, I am simply eternally stuck in the 80s and 90s, lol, glad you reacted to this version, you got me in tears, each and every single time with this song for sure :)
The people who think Maxwell sang this first are basically Muppets who have no interest in music or Maxwell, as Maxwell continually says how he respects Kate and loves her music at loves covering her songs
She started at the age 14 writer and the music she does everything great
good on Maxwell for covering the song. Musicians should do things like this more often. universal themes and emotions, etc
❤️ Kate Bush was my favourite in my teens- so many great songs. Beautiful amazing voice and writing talent. ❤️
Loved kate since I was a child. Her music makes me feel things I can't explain. She is an angel.
I love Kate Bush and Dimash. Thank you for featuring my two most favourite singers. ❤️
I love this song. This was used in a movie called She's Having a Baby with Kevin Bacon. I like Maxwell's version too.
Maxwell's amazing and has great taste. He actually tells everyone that Kate's the bomb in his live video.
Kate bush is pure genius you should listen to all of her music she is inimitable
Kate wrote the song and I love her version better !!!!!!!
She wrote the song!!!
Kate Bush is in my opinion the greatest singer songwriter of her time. Her following is Huge. And she’s only performed live a handful of times because of the haters.... I hate haters.
Not only did she write the song, and play all the piano... she performs it live. On RUclips
Absolutely love ❤ Kate bush
Kate Bush wrote this song, and many other great songs. I’m sure many others have commented. Not a fame monger, she’s probably very content that she’s inspired many others.
She wrote this song for a movie and it was not for love and basketball. It's about well listen to it but it can have other meaning basically do things before it's too late etc . This is not and I repeat Maxwell's song she wrote it
I've been listening to her since the 1980's. She's got such a gorgeous voice. It's about the wife having trouble during childbirth.
In a pantheon of magical songs this is one of the best. My God, she is so good, almost beyond...
(no idea who Maxwell is though)
