7:00 I'd recommend putting a sealant on the MDF first before painting. I needed to replace the baseboard in my bathrooms because the moisture ruined the MDF. However, I really like the profile of them.. So I tested a scrap piece by sealing it with a flex seal spraycan I had laying around and threw it in a tub of water for 24 hours. It was perfectly fine after that test. Flexseal does add some texture to it but I'd imagine there's far better alternatives compared to what I had laying around.
I am a Brit, who is a time (not that sort of time!) served Carpenter/Joiner who learns, enjoys and respects the honest approach to these videos. Learnt on imperial and metric.....potato/patato does it matter so long as you enjoy what you are doing! Great video looking forward to the next one. Cheers
Showing good, better and best is a service to your viewers and Is much appreciated. Thank-you! It allows newbies to see they can start woodworking with minimal tools and aspire to build with more complexity as time, money and desire permits.
"Senor Stumpy" lol I'm sure James will appreciate that. Somebody else referred to "that whiskey butterfly" guy in another video I watched the other day. hahahaha
You forgot to address the commenters who will claim that you're not a real woodworker unless you can carve a full entertainment center from a block of wood using nothing but a prison shiv and a spool of twine....
This dude is so smart. I mean it. All the self deprecating humor is help us dumb people relate more to him... Im convinced that most of the youtube wood workers are some of the smartest people on earth. Like comedians are ...its not what they do but the process and thought behind the explanation of why to do something in specific situations. Much respect. I know you're secret bud ... you're smart af
I too purchased the Graco paint sprayer from Home Depot. My project was a fence but I've since used it for a shop cabinet and it's not half bad. It takes a little experimentation with the speed control but the result was much better than a brush or roller. There is a learning curve as you need to follow ALL of the instructions, and clean up is still a chore... but I like it.
They all look good. I'm not going to guess. But 14 months on a laundry room!? My wife would be jealous that it could happen that soon! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Oh, and a great sense of humor to boot.
Damn. Just finished building my tool cabinet, sure would have looked nicer but would have also been heavier. Gives us begineers a lot of convidence knowing that simple builds can look so good. Thank you for your informative and entertaining videos. Geetings from Nepal.
You take the crown in terms of project time, I am hobby woodworker and it took me only 9 months to do my double waterfall work desk. 🤣 But I love watching your honest and straightforward videos.
Enjoyed the video! I think the pro one is either a,b or c! Then again, I get into land wars with Sicilian's (yes, I know that isn't the correct quote). Keep up the good work!
A is the high-end door. That’s my guess since the hole for the knob has been drilled. I’m renovating my shop (built drawer boxes yesterday). Great timing!
I 100% agree with buying used when starting out with exclusion to consumables like saw blades. My first miter saw was a Bosch 12" glide that I bought off Facebook Marketplace. If it still has the stock blade on it, throw it out immediately. A cheap Diablo blade is better than the stock blade. I sold the saw to another starting woodworker about a year after for the price I bought the saw at, when I jumped to a Kapex. Same for my first planer, it was a DeWalt 735.
I made MDF doors for a bathroom cabinet. I painted the with BIN shellac to act as a seal coat and then painted over top. After a year, the moisture still caused swelling. I remade the doors using exterior, or moisture resistant, MDF and now after 2 years there is no sign of moisture related swelling.
I noticed that the MDF you're using in the first example has different colors (main body Vs. rails and stiles). Could it be that the thicker panel is HDF (high density fiberboard, sometimes also called hardboard)? Similar to MDF but much more dense?
I recently made a kitchen and 2 Baths for one of my rentals using 3/4 exterior grade MDF, plunge router, and stop rails around the edges screwed into work surface. Turned out great.
Is Moisture Resistant MDF (MRMDF) a thing in the states? It's a denser product that cuts and machines better than the standard woolly stuff. Better for bathrooms as the name suggests.
Wood movement in respect to humidity. Along the fibre less than 1%, perpendicular but radial (from bark to center of tree, through growth rings) ~3% to 5%, tangential (around the tree along growth rings) 6% to 10%. No movement at all on MDF (medium density fibreboard) or plywood. Pay attention to grain orientation of the center panel.
Are there more doors or drawers in the world? First, define a hinge: A round or cylindrical mechanical device that pivots on a central point. Second, define a door: The thing you just made here. Now some clarification: A door front and a drawer front follow the same assembly method and have the same outward appearance. A wheel follows the same principal as a hinge, it just never stops pivoting. Now use math to cancel out your common denominators (drawer front & door front -> door & drawer), and you arrive at the conclusion that a drawer is just a door on an infinity hinge. There are more doors in the world, and drawers are just a conspiracy to oppress the common man. :D
Funny, I gave away scraps to another woodworker and he thought my garage had $20k worth of tools. Been at this for 10 years and I don't think I've even spent $5.
My few thoughts… First, jigs. You missed the opportunity to sell the jigs as beginner projects. Before I not someone could use a jigsaw. You could build a cross cut and ripping jig for a jigsaw. Circular saw you could have encouraged beginners to build their own ‘track saw’ guide. Two easy beginner projects that make this task easier. On the subject of saws, people were making cupboard doors before power tools were common. Just saying it is possible. I love my hand tools, but I’m using my table saw and miter saw all day to make doors! 😉 I could use my hand tools though. Jigsaw and sanding blocks even simpler than a circular saw. With a fine blade, you can get some clean cuts. Your building visits are great. Thanks for not caving to the tool review algorithm.
One pro tip that you used "This is a test/Still a test" but didn't call out. LABEL your test piece. Surely...I won't mistake a test piece with the real piece....but you will sooner or later. (and stop calling me Shirley). Everyone will have a moment of panic where you tear apart a glue up because you used the wrong piece, flipped it around etc. I don't know why human brain sucks at stuff like this, but I don't think I'm the outlier.
You put a man on the moon using the metric units, NASA has been metric for like always. In -99 a subcontractor had used "freedom units" and Mars climate orbiter crashed after 10 months of travel due to the wrong unit system.
Good video as always. Keep up the good work. However, "poplar is cheap" ? and from a home center???? Uh NnnnnnnnnnnOoooooo! It's not ! What planet was that home center on? Did you make this video years ago and are just now posting it because poplar is NOT cheap! Just 2 years ago I bought a 7ft 1x12 poplar board for the local home center because it had an awesome grain pattern. I have yet to use it. It cost me about $40. That SAME size board today just under $100 ...if you can find it in stock. Their website only lists a 2 board pack for $160. There is NOTHING cheap about that.
Northwest Indiana. 2-2-2025. Sunday. 1 pm. Lowe’s 1” x 12” x 6’ is $49.98. Menards 1” x 12” x 8’ is $55.84. “My” Home Depot didn’t have any. But Lowe’s, Menards and Home Depot are very similarly priced. I do this crazy thing called thinking and found the material elsewhere. What material is cheaper, has the same durability and takes paint the same?
I will never understand why someone can worship the imperial measurement numbers that much. It is stoneage times 2, and listening to these numbers is just crazy. Brits and other English speaking countries call it "tradition." It is just ridiculous!!!
I don’t think anyone worships it. I’m an engineer in the US, we all know it’s stupid, but it’s how our brains work. I work in metric now, and had to retrain my brain, which is still not fully trained after 4 years. Someone says “75mm” and my brain instantly starts dividing by 25mm since my reference is 1 inch.. it sucks! Haha

you must be a NavyEOD tech or MacGyver
What don't you route before cutting and glue up? One long strip to route is easier, and no rounded interior corners at assembly.
21:54 probably the best argument for metric system. :)
You should try a metric door and see how close it is to the inch door.
As a 40 year wood worker-
Perfect,Funny, educational Video as usual-Teach would be proud bro!!!!!🎉

Well done!!!!!!
Another fun and informative video. Thank you for that!
Nice job man! Keep up the good work!
GFY! 😂 Love it. Adding that to my DIY vernacular.
Good tip with the DAP. I had never considered that before but with MDF and paint, why not? Looks fantastic!
GFY - Good for you. That’s what I tell them anyway.
this video is the answer of "u have bunch of tool" statement , btw thanks sir for nice video

“To that I say GFY” 😂
Stiles stand (vertical); rails rest (horizontal). You're welcome. Did you cut the tenons in door three in the stiles or the rails?
He explained stiles and rails in the video, right????? How would he cut tenons in the stiles?????

A - poplar, B - pocket screws, C - MDF strips
Any update on the mitre saw stop block? Some months back you said you were going to start selling them and I'm in the market for one :)
I have built many doors using the beginner method, both for personal projects as well as for customers. Never had a complaint, nor an issue.
0:44 hahahaha dude!
I’d never thought of rabbeting the panel on the third way to get the back flat for drawers. Thanks for the tip, but think I’d just use method 1 or 2.
I noticed that the MDF you're using in the first example has different colors (main body Vs. rails and stiles). Could it be that the thicker panel is HDF (high density fiberboard, sometimes also called hardboard)? Similar to MDF but much more dense?
You forgot the 4th method... 3/4-inch MDF routed out with a CNC machine. LOL

I just iron on 3/4 edge band.
yeah you did put man on the moon all while using metric system ;P and one time they didn't they lost a mars orbiter ;)
Maybe not $20,000 but definitely over $19,995 shop is needed

I'd piss myself laughing if Trump just randomly abolishes the use of the Imperial measurement system in America 😂 so many would lose their minds.
Why the negative obligatory ‘why not’ format
“Why not” is negative?
Only 14 months???!!?? Slow down Flash, you are making the rest of us look bad......

And?
So what? I'll happily buy him a basic sander to appease you.
Legend has it no other sander is capable of sanding
You “have to” use only the tools used by him.
