This special Bach Christmas composition is solemn and overwhelming to cheer the spirit. The Oratorio is long written in six parts. In this recording, we, the listeners enjoy the best three beautiful cantatas in part 1. A magnificent rendition is full of sensitivity and technique. It is sweet to watch the conductor sing along with the young soloist. Conductor Harnoncourt directs in a well-phrased tempo with pleasant fluency. An added unique element in this amazing work is the use of Baroque musical instruments reinforcing the beauty of the musical composition. The Oratorio introduction is dynamic, it is a call to impose peace among MAN, the drums, and wind instruments and later the orchestra send a positive message for MAN to stop wars, and be tolerant and humane. The Church in Vienna is beautiful with a marvellous acoustic. The chorus and soloists' voices are eliciting for the soul. The Christmas Oratorio gives strength to gain faith for Peace in Gaza & Ukraine, optimism, energy and hope for a better 2024 YEAR. SEASON GREETINGS!
Thankyou for this review and programme notes in one. 20:05 Am I right that yhis section of the singing is of a much weakermore powerless confronting a much larger blacker figure? I fantasize that Mary is confronted by Gabrielle And that extraordinary figure of the naked child in the prickly straw that the camera flashes onto with Mary the Mother just behind. 27:51 a relief to hear the final Choral.
@@marilynwoolford-chandler1161 I reviewed section 20.05 and can not see any dark figures. In section 27:51 the camera captures a complex altar, it is difficult to see the naked child Mary is holding because is shown in seconds. The Christmas Oratorio is a religious theme performed at a Catholic Church. The listener is entitled to imagine religious illusions, and the medium stimulates the mind to feel closer to GOD.
Robert Holl (bass) and Peter Schreier (tenor) are such committed singers! I especially would like to honour the memory of Schreier, who died in 2019. He was one of the most intelligent and sensible artists of his generation. His voice was unique. It never sounded like a tenor voice, never sought to produce effects on the listener, but was spoke directly to the soul. Schreier's style was graceful, sober and plain. The tenor had a passion for music as well as for the texts he performed; he made us always feel the words as if he was simply recitating a poem. May he rest in peace!

Heinrich Schutz wrote more difficult and more beautiful music! Bach is good, ``classical'', with extremely balanced forms, but the period of the Higher Renaissance rocks! There is an element of surprise, for example in Hammerschmidt or even Buxtehude, that is missing in Bach and beyond...

Great to rediscover this visionary version (1981!) There is a before and a after Harnoncourt (without forgetting G. Leonhardt's contribution). Thank you for uploading this

A lifetime of memories. SInce it is inspired from God himself are we in for a treat if we make it to His presence.
Ironically, the Christmas Oratorio, like most of his religious music written after 1728, is made up of recycled secular music. The three secular cantatas that were used for most of the music are: 1. "Hercules at the Crossroads" written for the 11th birthday of the Crown Prince of Saxony in 1733; 2. "Toenet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten" written in 1733 for the birthday of the Electress of Saxony; 3: "Preise dein Gluecke, gesegnetes Sachsen" written for the coronation of the Elector of Saxony as King of Poland in 1734. Bach, of course, had an honorary appointment as a composer to the Saxon royal court.
It also helped that Picander, the pen name of Christian Friedrich Heinrici, wrote the librettos for both sets of cantatas. Some commentators will point out that the music seems to suit the religious themes better than the secular ones, perhaps meaning that Picander wrote the secular and religious words at the same time so Bach had an idea of where to go with both of them, since Bach regularly recycled his secular cantatas in the 1730's. Bach also recycled secular cantatas in Leipzig that he wrote for the Prince of Anhalt-Koethen; in my opinion, the music for those seems less inspiring because at the time he wrote them he had no real expection of re-using the music since the Prince was a Calvinist and didn't perform fancy music in his chapel.
AML2000 There's no such 'thing' as secular music by Bach.It is circumstancial music(he had to earn his living !),but never secular.Bach's signature on music is and always will be "Soli Deo Gloria" !
Yes -- I guess we could consider music he wrote for his rulers "religious" in the sense that they believed they got their power directly from God himself! In the last aria of the "Hunt" cantata (often called "Sheep May Safely Graze" in English), Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenburg is compared favorably to Jesus, and in the first cantata for the town council inauguration in Leipzig, we are reminded that opposing the city council is the same as opposing God. In the sense I (and many others) use secular simply means written for a non-religious occasion and not for a worship service. That Bach was very religious is a given of course.
Ditto that, Frank's School. This piece has a way of striking every chord in the heart, simultaneously! The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performed this piece for the second time in 30+ years just this past Friday evening and it brought me to tears with the first pounding of the tympani. I have loved this and been addicted to it for many years. This particular performance is just way over the top! Lasset das Zagen, verbannet die Klage,
Abandon hesitation, banish lamentation,
Stimmet voll Jauchzen und Fröhlichkeit an!
new opportunities? not in U.S.
Such a work of genius ... just love the conductor singing along with the boy soloist early in the Oratorio. So reassuring for a pressure solo.
Harncourt's genius gives such wonderful insight into Bach's genius. Thank you and, Nikolaus, R.I.P.
Three main ingredients that pull this masterpiece off! a) Conductor, who understands tempo and dynamics b) Orchestra of fine musicians c) enthusiastic Choristers
I miss listing to this with my father the Day before Christmas. This already the 6 year ago he passed away.I miss sharing our love for classical music and especially Bach
I'm sorry for your loss. This truly is beautiful art and brings tears to my eyes.
May he rest in peace!
The majestic choice of tempi is the icing on the cake. Sola Dei Gloria

I just can’t stop viewing this video. I love to listen and watch Baroque music in the way it was meant to be performed. This work in special, I love the joyful way in which the children’s choir interpret. Thank you for uploading it to RUclips. This is a real treat for those who love J.S. Bach’s music.
Majestic music: wonderful chorus and awesome orchestra led by a great conductor, all produce an amazing sound in German. LONG LIVE BACH
The opening number is one of the greatest choral ensembles ever written. CHRIST IS BORN!!!!
I had the pleasure to be part of a choir and sing this piece multiple times, great memories :)
So had I...
And where are you and where was it?
May God bless You

Bach. Eine beispiellose Gefasstheit. Eine Ausgeglichenheit die ihresgleichen sucht.
An enduring work of art by J.S. Bach. What would Christmas be like without this great piece of music. I would rather not think. We are indeed grateful to J.S. Bach for this spirited masterpiece. Beautifully performed!!!
The greatness of Bach is off the charts ,and far superior splendor.
This Christmas Oratorio is full of my unfathomable emotion.

Einfach traumhaft.
Bach’s music is timeless!❤
I listen to the whole Oratorium every Christmas. It is such a delight.

Chaque année j'écoute cet Oratorio de Noël dirigé par Harnoncourt si extraordinairement interprété. Une perfection rigoureuse et si émotive...
Moi aussi. C´superbe.
Merry Christmas to everyone!!! All the love and the light in the universe!
The greatest work ever composed for Christmas, in a classic performance. Everyone should be familiar with this. Thanks for making it available! Soli Deo Gloria
Bach wrote many other cantatas for various days of the Christmas season. No need to stop with just the Christmas Oratorio!
Yes, and AMEN. Soli Deo Gloria, indeed!❤️
Topping the Messiah???
@@Andy_Pandy2000 I refer to works written specifically for Christmas, which Messiah wasn't. Now if I were to rate Messiah against all Bach's output on Christ's life--oratorios and passions--it would probably be a neck and neck race
Dobry, stary Bach. Wspaniała muzyka. Wspaniałe wrażenia - o wykonaniu nawet nie wspomnę.
Only participants get most of the joy!
This music sways eternity;; the stars blink, and we see.

"If Beethoven is a prodigy among men, Bach is a miracle of God" - Rossini.
This is the way to celebrate Christmas. Fabulous!
Agreed in all meanings
I agree.
Handel is better 🎄
For me Christmas is very day. Don't need a special day to listen to BACH.

Wunderschön. Ein Lichtblick in dieser unruhigen Zeit.

My favourite set of cantatas by the old master. Absolutely fabulous!
I love being drawn into the full performance in every aspect - the orchestra, conductor, soloists, choir robes AND the beautiful church! Thanks for making this available!
A masterpiece performed in the Waldhausen Abbey Church, Waldhausen im Strudengau, Oberösterreich, Österreich.
Unfortunately I can’t understand the words but I always feel uplifted when I hear the beginning of it. They do say music speaks all languages.
" Shout! and be Joyful! "
Harnoncourt, John Elliott Gardiner and Carl Richter in the past are THE master Bach interpreters. Wonderful choir and setting...Germany's totally amazing musical tradition (and preservation thereof) at their best
You are right my friend and, of course, the master "Helmut Rilling". I saw him live in Stuttgard perform Bach's Masse in G minor at the Stiftkirsche church. And my heart stopped like now

I just love Harnoncourt's spirited interaction with the soloist in "Schlafe, mein Liebster" from 42:08 on. So tender and majestic at the same time. The camera work is fantastic as well. Always brings me to tears. Merry Christmas everyone.

I felt perfection in this presentation. Brazil, Christmas,2023!
Though for Christmas, we waken ourselves to this beautiful and "striking" piece every year on Advent Sunday.
Great to rediscover this visionary version (1981!)
There is a before and a after Harnoncourt (without forgetting G. Leonhardt's contribution).
Thank you for uploading this
Sublime. We need far MORE music of this standard (both composition and performance) and far LESS pop-trash.
I love the children's voices. They are so perfect.
This is timeless. This will be a beautiful memory...no one can take my joy away.
So lovely!
A modern miracle. I just can't imagine the turmoil going on in the brain of Bach. So filled with music and so little time to get it all written down. Can you imagine, how to decide what to write first. I sit at my computer and through RUclips I am transported to the beauty of this wonderful music. Can you just imagine being part of this .
AML2000 The Lord moves in mysterious ways.
I think as perfect a musical moment as any human being can expect; as close to heaven on earth as possible. Thank you so much for this!
