Sang this as a kid in the Vatican for Pope Paul with the Harvard Glee Club as a member of the Newark Boys Chorus in 73 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Still brings tears to my eyes. We sang it with no music, I was 13yrs old then we had it all memorized along with 2 other scores
❤
probably not even Bach ever had the chance to listen to his masterpiece performed in such a perfect way
Antonio sferlazzo: I'm not a great fan of Harnoncourt (his recordings of Bach's cantatas are overshadowed by those of his colleague Gustav Leonhardt ) but this performance of the Magnificat is really great. The soloists are magnificent.
almost certainly not
In Bach's time, they didnt have holes in their natural trumpets. Also he certainly did not have access to so many singers and players and of course no female singers.
❤
❤
This is the best version of the Magnificat. The Alto is phenomenal
Agreed!!
they all are.
I completely agree. Bernarda Fink is wonderful.
I do agree. Bernarda Fink is a great singer.
❤
This is my favorite performance of the Magnificat. I love the expression of the first soloist.
The alto mezzo is a real treasure. Her final note in the "Suscepit Israel" is like a ruby.
❤

Nikolaus Harnoncourt had the ability to perceive things beyond music. Je and Bach..... Perfect harmonic.
I am an accompanist for a wonderful choir that will be performing this in two months. The choir, orchestra and soloists are top notch and I appreciate the fact that the tempos are not so extreme (fast). The conductor really lets the listener appreciate the complexity of this wonderful work. Bravo to all involved!
The bass is amazing, I love his voice!
My favorite performance of this immortal classic. Harnoncourt always had the perfect tempo for Bach. I have never seen a conductor so enthusiastic about the concluding doxology. Deposuit, Fecit potentiam, and Sicut locutus est are outstanding.
This is the best ever performance of the Magnificat. No more comments
who is the bass??
Christopher Maltman, baritone (bass)
Couldn't agree more. The facial expression at 26:05 in only enhances it.
Really? What about the trumpet in 27:22?? D=
I agree. Whenever I want to listen to this masterwork I always find this version. There's just something about it... the period instruments, the room, the excellent recording, and the soloists and choir are quite excellent... love it all.
Great music, great performance --- and on original instruments!
I will never tire of hearing "quia fecit mihi magna" sung in this form.
Feeling the same...
He pronounced something like KWIA instead of QUIA (Quia fecit mihi magna....).
@@taf44tt8io I think it is a form of pronouncing latin "as germans would have done it in Bach's time". In german, Qu sounds /kv/, as in Qualen. Also, he pronounces Mag-na instead of "/mania/" which would be the italian way of pronouncing latin. ;)
Gracias, gran Maestro Harnoncourt.
The oldest prayer of Christianity. Powerful statement of peace and justice. JSB turned it one of the finest pieces of music ever, and Maestro NH in a prime rendition.
Magnificent performance, beautiful setting, terrific singers and orchestra - and Harnoncourt is wonderful to watch. Many thanks for posting this.
Everything is amazing about this. As a musician, the conducting was phenomenal. He actually knows how to move the whole ensemble. What a rare talent to convey so much. Bravo!
If you’re not familiar with Nikolaus Harnoncourt I highly recommend you listen to some of his other performances... Brandenburg Concerti, all the big Bach oratorios, Handel’s Jeptha and Alexander’s Feast, the Monteverdi trilogy of operas, Mozart’s Lucio Silla, so much more.
@@manolis.799 You are absolutely correct, my friend: a true Harnoncourt fan! 👏👏👏 Here is a taste of Harnoncourt's Händel, from the ode for St Cecilia's day:

Tout simplement magique... et dirigé de main de maître par Nikolaus Harnoncourt...
Der Start der Solisten mit "Siccut locutus...." ist unendlich schön!
If the first piece is off, then I stop listening. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire performance; beginning to end! The soloists were BOSS.
Una sola parola "Magnifico" !
The sound and video engineering on this recording is pure expertise! The Et Misericordia between Fink and Bostridge is beyond descriptive beauty... and Maltman's resonance... WOW! Harnoncourt really understands the dynamics that propel Bach.

0:44 what a distinguished career Steve Carrell has had! Even playing for Harnoncourt!
HA HA
English translation:My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
Because He hath regarded the humility of His slave:
For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me; and holy is His name.
And His mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him.
He hath shewed might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy:
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
Glory be the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forever and ever, Amen.
What a performance from everybody, okay the conductor was extraordinary. I have heard this Bach piece many, many times and this is my favourite.
The true embodiment of Royalty!
Magnificent performance! The soloists are great, and Nicolaus is such a sweet man!
was :(
@@bobmcgahey1280 truly missed
Anna Korondi...Que voz e interpretacion! Magnifica!
RIP Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Una gran obra i una molt bona interpretació.
That trumpet player with the ponytail is gorgeous too.
bellissimo...perfetto..coro e cantanti all'unisono. .Non stanca mai..direzione veloce il migliore
Through the magic of the internet I continue to explore and discover the amazing music left for us to enjoy. Today I discovered this creation that pierced my heart with the glory and patience my Father has for me and testify that I know Bach's talent was guided throughout his life by GOD Almighty. What a gift to hear all these beautiful people assembled together in one purpose to bring to life a message from God through the mind and hands of Bach. My hope is that I will continue to receive these gifts as I search the internet.
John Dudek I am planning a biopic called the Passion of J.S. Bach. I believe what you say is correct about his relationship to God. He was a very humble, emotionally sensitive and deeply spiritual man. While his contemporaries busied themselves with currying court favor and accumulating wealthy patrons and fancy high-profile appointments, Bach contented himself with grinding out a new contata every week, in a church in a relatively provincial section of Bavaria where his grueling schedule included duties as choirmaster to a generation of likely unruly and lively youngsters and producing 13 children with his one wife. I find this deeply moving.
Magnífica versión...!!!
It is simply impossible to start advent without this music!
Maravilla. No hay manera de describir esta música.
Dedico siempre "Misericordia" a mi amado padre.
Such a lifting and taken for granted piece of work!! 10 /10. I Salute you all
Una belleza!!!
It’s amazing that the most glorious praise to the Virgin Mary was done by a protestant!
So beautiful, so fantastic, so heavenly!!
Yes, the Best Version I know!!! And so actually!!!!!
No es necesario escuchar de rodillas, ¡ EL ALMA YA ESTÁ DE RODILLAS !
De acuerdo.
Maravilloso! Qué gran interpretación!
It's always amazing to me when I become aware of what a difference in tempo can do to the feeling of a particular movement. It's neither good nor bad to me, the taking of certain tempi; I'm just really interested in what one tempo makes me feel compared to the feeling I get from hearing it at a different tempo on another video of another great performance. This interpretation and performance are sublime.
Sehr schöne Aufnahme, sehr gutes Orchester, Solisten und Chor!!!
Awesome conducting, awesome interpretation, excellent choral singing, stellar soloists. The team to beat.
I agree with you, Sylvia!
Sono in paradiso. ...cantanti bravissimi, direttore ispirato....
My go to performance for this piece is the Bernstein with Tourel in the Mezzo, although Betty Allen was terrific as well. I recall being impressed with Madame Allen's live performance in the late 60's. Rest In Peace all...Bernstein...Tourel...and Allen.
Best v. I've found on RUclips so far.
I love the oboe part at 0:48
Not an oboe player by any chance?😮
There;s an empty seat in the audience. I want it!
me too !
orquestra maravilhosa
Even when Bach composes a praising piece of music he is outstanding!
la migliore esecuzione del magnificat
Pure delight.
Bellissimo bravissimi harnoncourt ci manchi....
Muy bueno. Excelente versión!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me gustó mucho. Bravoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meraviglia!
Adoro esta peça. Adoro Bach.
Adoro Harnoncourt EPD
I cant get over the aria Esurientes -I could listen to her voice all day
14:54 Ian Bostridge ❤. That control!!
Magasztalja lelkem az Urat,
és szívem ujjong üdvözítő Istenemben.
Tekintetre méltatta alázatos szolgálóleányát:
Íme ezentúl boldognak hirdetnek
az összes nemzedékek,
mert nagyot művelt velem ő, aki Hatalmas:
ő, akit Szentnek hívunk.
Nemzedékről nemzedékre
megmarad irgalma azokon, akik istenfélők.
Csodát művelt erős karjával:
a kevélykedőket széjjelszórta,
hatalmasokat elűzött trónjukról,
kicsinyeket pedig felmagasztalt;
az éhezőket minden jóval betölti,
a gazdagokat elbocsátja üres kézzel.
Gondjába vette gyermekét, Izraelt:
megemlékezett irgalmáról,
melyet atyáinknak hajdan megígért,
Ábrahámnak és utódainak mindörökké.
Dicsőség az Atyának, a Fiúnak
és a Szentléleknek, miképpen kezdetben,
most és mindörökké! Ámen.
Magnifico!
The use of soloists in the sicut locutus section differs from other performances in which groups of the choir perform this section.
Don't know what Bach himself meant, but this performance is superior to all others.
The excellent bass that begins the sicut locutus and at the end joins the amazing soloist Christina, and at the end of the segment where everyone together ends up in "Abraham ..." really exciting.
The excellent bass that begins the sicut locutus and at the end joins the amazing soloist Christina, and at the end of the section where everyone together concludes in "Abraham is really exciting."

Maravilloso...
Fantástica Bernarda Fink
The only minor flaw was the barritone's rushing the very last line of Sicut Locutus Est (number 11). Otherwise, a magnificent performance of the Magnificat! Bravo!
