  • The Magnificat, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is the first large choral work that Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig in the spring of 1723. It is an ‘old-fashioned’ but delightful five-voiced work that uses Latin, just like the other rarity among Bach’s works, the Mass in B minor.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 2nd 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

As a hard core rocker . I have only to say this : Bach opened so many doors for me , its ridicicolus . I feel like a new born baby every time I listen to Maestro Bach. And this interpretation just blows my mind... The doors are wide open to harvest the energy , and the lovely presence. I feel naked , in awe and in gratidude to the Baroque masters. Long live their heritige to humanity. Salute

Numerous rock & pop groups have used Bach's music over the years, especially Jethro Tull and early Genesis and composer Burt Bacharach! Since he's been dead so long it's just public domain and there's no royalties to pay, although Bach's family tried to claim that about 10 years!
Bach truly was the original rocker!

Brahms wasn't kidding when he said "Study Bach! There you'll find (literally) everything!" His words remain true to this day. There is so much rock in Bach it's ridiculous. Everything we call modern rock/pop music has already been done 270 years ago.

i very seldom leave comments, but I just can't help admitting that to the (rather dull) question "What would you bring to a deserted Island?", my ultimate answer would be "All the recordings of the Netherlands Bach Society", plus my mp3 player and a solar charger. You folks ROCK! - and this is from someone who used to be a fan of heavy metal in his youth... Musical taste changes over time, I guess. Beside my absolute admiration on the divine performances, i must say: whoever is your sound engineer, must worth his salt. The quality of your recordings is topnotch - that is fairly obvious even coming through my crappy headphones. Who is this guy??? (or lady - argh, these days I must quickly add.). Anyways, I am pretty sure Master Bach would be at awe himself listening to his music, and would probably say "Das ist ein wunderbares Musikstück. Habe ich das wirklich geschrieben?...." Blessings from Budapest!!

Beautiful solo voices. I grew up with music. My mother was giving concerts when she was pregnant with me. I have a photo of me at age two at her piano with her Haydn Creation oratorio Book. She was memorizing one of the soprano parts. She also played the vinyl which I heard as my first music memory. I used to listen to Gregorian Chant the night before exams in College. The soloists in this recording video are blessed with beautiful clear voices - no wild vibratos that average out just below the correct pitch that I have heard elsewhere . Thank you!!! I am 71 years old now and have heard a lot! Sang in Mendelssohn’s Elijah as a twenty something in a church choir next to my mother! Another blessing!

The Bach Magnificat was the first choral piece I performed as a college freshman, and it was the first Bach choral work I ever performed (I was concurrently working on his prelude and fugue in B-flat minor from the WTC I). Anyway, the night of the concert, my 18-year-old self got to the concert hall only to realize I had left my Magnificat score in the school cafeteria, which was locked. I told the director my dilemma, to which he said, "Oh no!" and walked away. Somehow I sang that entire work from memory that night, 19 years later, I still have many of those melismas memorized.
So glad to have found this ensemble. Happy Advent '22, cheers from Memphis, TN!

Our troubles, today, will melt into the humdrum and noise of our times - but great music, like this, will live on - possibly until the end of our species. Magnificent!

I get chills when I hear this. I used to listen to this in my dorm at college. On vinyl discs. And sang soprano in our college choir. 1970 to 1971. Also Handel’s Messiah. Sang in church choir next to my mother Mendelssohn’s Elijah 1982. In English- took about three hours to perform.
Visited St.Thomas Kirche in Germany where both Mendelssohn and JS Bach were organists and choir masters. I stood right in front of the choir pews and two feet away from the golden toned floor plaque dedicated to Bach! All these blessings! I still have my mother’s Creation score 69 years later!

Once again, profound gratitude to the Netherlands Bach Society - and not just for the performance of the work (beauty, joy, excitement) but for the nimbus of interviews with performers, with snatches of rehearsals, that together make this so very rewarding. What a text it is for musical setting too: no wonder that one can see on Wikipedia a list of almost 250 composers of Magnificat settings (and it does not claim to be complete).

I’ve had the good fortune of singing this piece as a senior in high school! I have never been so challenged with a text as a first soprano - it is by all accounts my favorite piece of choral music and one that I am certain I will forever remember. I was part of a wonderful chorus of which I was the odd one out as it was made up completely of college students and older very experienced singers from the community, and I learned more from the weekly practices than I had in several years of schooling. This piece - and this recording, extremely beautiful and a very helpful practice - is gorgeous and I consider it required listening in general.

I heard a story on the BBC some years ago, then entitled "St Matthew Passion Miracle" or something like that . It was about a man who was in a coma, and when his vital signs started to drop and it looked like he was dying his wife had an inspired moment and played him Bach's Matthew Passion in his earbuds - and he came out of the coma in 30 minutes! I believe much of his sacred music (at least) is spiritual and achieves what he dedicated it for, namely "The glory of God and the refreshment of the human soul".

Bach's music is immensely comforting. Following a massive head injury I sustained in a high speed collision with a semi, followed by eight days in a coma, I found it difficult to make sense of the world, of anything. For some reason, I felt an impulse to listen to Bach's music, which is strange; for I had preferred until then the Romantics to him, especially Beethoven and Mahler. I checked out from a library two cds: a recording of his most prominent organ works, and Glenn Gould's 1980 recording of the Goldberg Variations. I found the latter in particular uniquely soothing - something about the counterpoint and variations on one constant theme, became a constant need. I listened to it again and again, even several times a day. Some time later I got a hold of the Well Tempered Clavier. The effect was similar. It soothed me as nothing else could, at a time when deep depression made thoughts of suicide a constant struggle. In retrospect, it seems no exaggeration at all that, along with an incredibly faithful wife and forgiving children, Bach saved my life.

    • @falfield
      @falfield Год назад

@@bwv7186 Its a moving story - I hope things are OK for you now without too much residual disability & scarring of body or mind. It's an understandable story to me too - I have always felt that the effect Bach has on my mind is - and I can find no better word - cleansing. I worked in the English Health Service, and in a difficult period for me 10yr ago I was growing resentful of the studied exploitation of the personal qualities of workers in the service by those running it.
It had been obvious to those at the coalface for a decade before this that a workforce crisis was developing - a bulge of boomer doctors and 1970s Asian migrant doctors approached retirement and would reduce supply. At the same time ALL the demand factors were going the other way: a steadily older and therefore sicker population, more novel tests & treatments, a rising UK population, rising patient expectations. But the politicians couldn't/wouldn't see and plan for it. My 10hr working day became 14 or 16hr as perfectionist traits drove me to try to keep things running smothly. The least demanding admin tasks were done at the fag-end of the day and the last of these was the mostly mindless signing of hundreds of prescriptions in a weary haze. Enraged at the theft of my evenings and at myself for my inability to forget the values my parents had given me so I could walk away from it all, I looked for something to help me avoid blowing a circuit.
And found, after trials of other pieces, Bach's Goldberg variations - Nikolayeva and Perahia performances. Like you I listened again and again, first of all setting aside the prescriptions to concentrate, and then when I knew them by heart, I worked with them in the background. It did not save my life, but DID save my equanimity. In this way, Bach allowed me to survive my last working years.
