It's been exactly 30 years since I sang this work as a chorister, and it's been exactly 3 years - December 10, 2021 - that my wife Florence died. So now I'm listening to this work in memory of her. We had been married 59 and a half years.
Thank you. I have enjoyed all 6 works in the oratorio now. This is a brilliant ensemble. I am sure Bach would have thoroughly approved and applauded your efforts.

Be sure you're on full screen at 15:00 when the boy soprano glances up at his echoing colleague in the back loft. Inexpressibly charming. Bach would smile understandingly.
Thank you for pointing it out! He is a beautiful child, and what a voice. It's hard to comprehend how much hard work he and his young colleagues have put into this, and at such a young age.
What a dynamic introduction...this classic work is captivating to the soul and mind! The synchronisation of the orchestra, choral and soloists have a perfect balance. The opening of the choral is a good example. The oboes, french horns and string instruments must not overcome the voices. The choral entrance is forceful yet the instrumental musical tones are audible and well-balanced. The conductor, N. Harnoncourt, I know, keeps a delicate balance throughout the performance. His superior employment of dynamics, articulation, expressiveness and phrasing shows passion and fire. The impressive performance of the young boy soloist is magnificent, he can present a beautiful long repertoire with his angelic voice. 'Weihnachts-Oratorium' enlightens the Xmas spirit each December. Graceful, charming and harmonious is the sound of Bach's superb composition. PEACE AND SERENE SEASON GREETINGS!
9:22 perfection starts... As others have already mentioned, Harnoncourt is still the golden standard: perfect direction, amazing soloists, music is played with not just to "look good", but to be MEANINGFUL instead
Ich habe die Aufnahme erst gefunden. Vor 35 Jahren habe ich das Weihnachtsoratorium unter Hans Otto in Freiberg gesungen. Ich bin so gerührt. Die Jungs singen wie Engel
Circumstances like this is the time when I used to envy that how luckier you people are by having the golden opportunity of listening and enjoying live performances of beauties of this rare kind direct in front of your eyes from eminent musicians. Something, for me, is better than nothing. Excellent rendition and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks. PS: Best way to cross -check how lucky you are is by enquiring to another less fortunate and not by asking your mind, which will always be prejudiced.
I sang this work with the Laurel (MD) Oratorio Society (Now the Central Msrylsnd Chorale) in 1994. The Cantata No. 4 was my favorite "Fallt mitt Danken, Fallt mitt Loben," etc. What I remember about the echo, I still rememher and treasure. The soprano for the whole work was Susan Bender, who sang with the U.S. Navy Sea Chanters and who was a 1986 Met Regional winner (National Art Gallery, Washington, DC. I happened to attend that particular one. Actually, Susan was co-winner with Gordon Hawkins, who still sings with the Met). Her echo was a young woman chorister, Polly Edmonds, daughter of the conductor. I love this performance of just a great oratorio and I feel so blessed to have been able to sing it.

Note the wonderful, artful and perfectly executed recitative quartet at 1:08:40 with Peter Schreier, Robert Holl and the two boys Allan Bergius and Stefan Rampf. I wonder if Bach himself - who was often complaining over how bad singers he had - ever had the chance to hear it so well performed as here,! - And not only the recitative but the whole oratorium?!
I have this DVD and it is true there are different boys at different times in the main choir. The performance was obviously done over several days and edited but it is amazing nonetheless. I forget this young lad's name now but he features in a documentary on the Tolzers here on RUclips and is now an Opera director in Germany I believe. In his early 40s now.

Ich bin sprachlos.
Thank!
can't get enough: and yet my mind goes straight from : jauchzet , frolocket to sister Zion and on . To digest it in 2 days as originally forseen is the most ideal way but hard to accomplish in modern (lay) days.
I was under the impression that Bach's original intent, was that the 6 cantatas were to be performed over the first 6 days of Christmas.
tmitch1950 Cantate I-III which tell us the story og Jesu birth (Luke 2:1-20) were written for Christmasday (25.12), Stephanusday (26.12) and third Christmasday (27.12.1734). Cantate IV (circumcision and naming ceremony Luke 2:21) was a part of the service on Newyearsday 1735. Cantate V (visit of the 3 Magi to King Herod) was written for the sunday in between Newyearsday and the 6th of January. Cantate VI was written for the feast of Epiphany on the 6th of January 1735.

One cannot help wondering where these boy singers are today, and what they're doing. Does anyone know?
WJohnM Not at all have a good singing voice, when they are Men, after their voice change in the puberty. The most of them are working in normal academic and non academic Jobs. A few are study Music and Singing and work as Singer or other cultural Jobs.
WJohnM if you have questions where are the young Solist today, please call the Office of the Toelzer Sanger Knaben.

El boy alto se llama Stefan Dampf y es chelista. El boy soprano se llama Martin Gregor Lûtje y es tenor.
And more thanks! It's nice to know that there are other people who care about such things, but then one expects no less of true music lovers. Alle Menschen werden Brueder....
