This is a game changer. I grew up singing in choirs all my life in school. I started to learn to sing as a soloist/vocalist recently and my vocal coach would tell me to open my mouth. This video is golden I’m discovering my new range and so much more freedom in my voice
Hey man I just wanna let you know that this video got recommended to me and it has been extremely helpful, my singing has improved so fast within the couple of days I’ve implemented your advice. I’ve seen your other videos as well, I’m also wondering if you could make more videos on common mistakes, things to be more aware of, maybe talk about your journey as well, and possibly some exercises to train and maintain our voice!!! I’m sincerely thankful for your videos
I plan to make more videos this coming winter break regarding more singing technique habits to avoid. Especially given the vast misinformation that can be damaging to the voice.
Wonderful video Michael! One question, as a beginner-intermediate, I've only just started being able to apply this technique in my singing consistently, but it only works with an "Ah," sound, or the vowel exercise you just provided. Whenever I start having to sing lyrics, my voice basically falls apart: my throat closes up, and sound very breathy/nasally. I also notice this only happens when I'm singing in English, and not in Russian or Slavonic, not sure why this is happening. Right now, the only way I get over this problem is by enunciating the word's vowels while singing but it doesn't sound like English lol Any advice how to fix it? Love your work!
When I sing I feel like my tongue is misaligned, is that normal? Also when I open my throat like I'm yawning it often makes me yawn, is it just a habit or am I doing something wrong?
I'd say try to relax your toungue, tongue, tension is very problematic. If you want to "align" your tongue, here are some tips. For Ah, your tongue rests on the bottom of your mouth, with the tip touching the bottom of your front teeth. Eh is similar to ah, just slightly curve your tounge. ee is even more curving your tongue, while still keeping the space of eh Oh is like Ah with the sides of the lips coming together Oo is like oh but the top and bottom lip coming together. The "yawn" is simply to get you to open up the back of your mouth, aka "lift" your soft palate. You don't need to open it as much as a yawn, but enough. That removes the nasal sound and opens up more room for resonance
@MichaelAzarMusic thank you so much. So about yawn, my larynx should not move? And should i feel it at back of my mouth when i do it, i dont know how to describe feeling, I feel as if the muscle of the tongue has been tightened at back of the mouth. I feel there Is much more space. Also thank you for the videos, I am preparing for theology faculty and they are helping me a lot with learning how to sing
@@MichaelAzarMusic Yea, I think my jaw just gets tired easily, because over the years I formed a habit of minimal movement. Because I associated movement with pain. But the lack of opening my mouth correct resulted in tension in other places, like you mentioned. But yea, now opening up the mouth good and wide does tire my jaw fairly easily at this point.

Question: if my jaw starts to hurt because I’m not used to working it that much, will it get stronger the more I do it?
Don't over do it, you shouldn't open your jaw until it clicks
Overtime it will feel more natural

You are an excellent teachet. Loved this video.
Thank you so much
Mah meh mi mo mou
3:50 bad vocal teachers such as lara Fabian 😅 I’m not sure
If you’re going to explain mouth openings, you should’ve done a close-up of your face and not film so far
@@TheSubwaysurferIf I revisit the topic, which I may in the future, I will account for that. Thanks!
