This channel focuses on teaching Byzantine chant, singing technique, and music in general. It is run by me, Michael Azar, and I hope you enjoy the videos! In this channel, you will find chanting tutorials, singing technique videos, and videos on music theory in general. You will also find several of my performances, notably many of my own compositions.
Here are some things about me: I was tonsured a reader on October 18th, 2020, and I have been chanting since 2013. I earned my certification in Byzantine Chant from Holy Cross Hellenic College in May 2021 with the highest grade possible, excellent. I have also studied classical, opera, and musical theater singing since 2013. Outside of singing, I play piano and saxophone, which I have also done since 2013. Currently, I am in my final year of my B.S. in Biology and B.A. in keyboard composition. I will complete my MD in 2029, and my hope is to be an otolaryngologist in the future.

As a member of the Lebanese diaspora, the violence that occurred in Lebanon this September filled me with immense pain, uncertainty, sorrow, and fear. I felt that words could not express the sorrow, loss of life, and destruction of our home that we as people from the Levant have experienced over the last year, from Gaza, to Lebanon, and now Syria within these past weeks. I felt that the only wa...

4:49 are you talking about spasnye so delawl by pavel chesnekov?
One of my favorite hymns. I wish it was sung more in regular services like the Divine Liturgy.
Amen
Very touching composition!
Thanks for sharing, Michael
Sobering and stunning. Thank you for this.
Michael...You wrote this? Amazing work! Blessings to you and your family. It was a pleasure working with you and thank you for continuing to share your good works with the world!
Hi Phil! Yes, I did! Thank you so much, I hope all is well! The fire for music is still there and I hope will keep burning for a lifetime
Best metropolitan ever!
What do you think about breathing into your lower back? I've been practicing breath support and my vocals have improved by a good margin since that lesson
@NahomeKidane-z9j It's not effective at all. Your lower back has literally nothing to do with breathing. The better option is more within the abdominal region. Your diaphragm pushes out your abdominal organs to breathe. Your abdominal muscles do breathe control. Focusing on your core in the better option. The serratus inferior posterior, the only lower mid back muscle which assists in breathing, lifts up the false ribs slightly to increase thoracic space, but in comparison to the diaphragm, it is so miniscule that focusing on it would deeply impede your breathing by direction your focus away from the better option. Any muscle lower than that is not used in breathing as they are not attached to any site on the ribcage.
This is interesting, but why did some of the greatest opera singers apply this techniqeu and even prescribe it? People like lili lehmann, caruso, tetrazinni, even pavrotti i think... @@MichaelAzarMusic
I couldn't tell you, if you have a video of them explaining it, maybe I could tell you, but anatomically, the lower back is far removed from your actual breathing
Luciano Pavrotti talks about it here ruclips.net/video/DYrnunDW0Jg/видео.htmlsi=h2bXSEAcTePQ_Bk4@@MichaelAzarMusic
@@MichaelAzarMusicalso, ive learned (from Micheal Trimble) that bringing the diaphgram out produces a more nasally sound. if you pull in the abdomen, like caruso or lehmann prescribes, it goes up into your true mask rather than through your nose. This method should only be done when singing though
Very good
I enjoy your vids. I think I disagree with breathing at the same time as the melody. As I understand, and like, the drone fills the space while the melody breaths.
@CarlAStevens I think there's room for flexibility in interpretation of ison for sure, as there is with basically all interpretations within Byzantine Chant. I guess I could give a historic practice argument for breathing with the melody. If one is to believe that the ison developed either from or alongside the organum of western gregorian chant, then ison is almost a separate line of music rather than just a drone, even if it is how it is treated. That is why ison typically is imitating the words of the chanter. As a result of the historic practice and matching the phrasing and diction of the chanter, I would say ison would breathe with the chanter. However, it's not black and white, there are different schools of thought and interpretation, so if you find that ison sounds best (especially in a drier space) when it is held out, then do what sounds best.
@ The fact that you responded, and so thoroughly and quickly is noteworthy. Thank you. Of interest to me is how “what I like” actually has any place in the discourse. In a way though, that is a side point. I suppose I am influenced by my feelings when I hear monastic chanters and Gregorian Chant and the precision with which they produce sound. It’s possible I want Byzantine chant to behave as they do.
Wonderful, Michael! Can you post the link to the score in the description?
Yup, I will when I am at my computer
Check the description, learnbyzantinechant.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Polychronion-of-Metropolitan-Saba-Phrygian-1.pdf
❤ love it!
I have trouble of holding the ison for a longer time... :/ I know how to breath out of diaphragm and so on, but it just doesnt last long enough
try to match your ison to the phrasing of the music you are singing along to. You may find having direction in your ison, even if it is just one note, will give it better support and energy and allow you to sing ison for longer. One of the problems in singing that prevents singers from utilizing their breath efficiently is matching their breath to the phrasing the want. If that does not help, oftentimes, using less air is the better option. Air speed is not volume, but support, so if you can "restrict" your air (of course, without tension), to have a faster air stream with a smaller volume of air moving. Your sound will still sound supported. There are a ton of factors that go into sound production, but the TL;DR of this is try to use less air to create the same sound. Hope this helps
Really beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Great work, Michael.
Brother, keep up your work. It is truely blessed. ☦️
So is A B C like Ni Pa Vou etc?
no, C is like Ni
Thank you for sharing this piece. You expressed my feelings better than I myself could describe.
Deeply moving, Michael and Annie! Thank you for posting this. (The live performance was electrifying!)
Thanks brother this is very helpful 🙏
Great moving composition. Very expressive to show times of war.
Dramatic and touching!
french horns go so hard
Hey man I just wanna let you know that this video got recommended to me and it has been extremely helpful, my singing has improved so fast within the couple of days I’ve implemented your advice. I’ve seen your other videos as well, I’m also wondering if you could make more videos on common mistakes, things to be more aware of, maybe talk about your journey as well, and possibly some exercises to train and maintain our voice!!! I’m sincerely thankful for your videos
I plan to make more videos this coming winter break regarding more singing technique habits to avoid. Especially given the vast misinformation that can be damaging to the voice.
Beautiful! The liturgical art of byzantine chant should be practiced in every parish
Beautiful as always, Michael
Beautiful! Well done. I love Chopin's ballades.
Can't have enough from this beautiful chanting! God Bless you
Stunning , God bless you both.
I can't get enough of the unadulterated Byzantine Orthodox chant. In the words of chanter Michael Tsiapouttas, other garments were tried, but none fit like the old.
Saint Mary’s is a beautiful church with such wonderful acoustics. Truly lifting up the praises of God with your beautiful chanting. Blessed Lord’s Day to you both. Many years! ❤
Yes! More of Dr. Azar, please
He is the best, no doubt about it!
It was a very pleasant performance... 👋👋👋
Can you do the tone 1 version?
I too would like to hear this!
Is that Tone 7?
8 with enharmonic and diatonic variants
Hey Michael! God bless you brother! This is George from Holy Resurrection in Lebanon. This was a wonderful lesson. Really appreciate what you are doing here.
I believed wherefore I spake; I was humbled exceedingly. As for me I, I said in mine ecstasy; every man is a liar. What shall I render unto the Lord; for all that he hath rendered unto me. I will take thy cup of salvation; and I will call upon the name of the Lord. My vows unto the Lord will I pay; in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord; is the death of his saints. O Lord I am thy servant, I am thy servant and the son of thy handmaid; thou hast broken my bonds asunder. I will sacrifice a sacrifice of praise unto thee; I will call upon the name of the Lord. My vows unto the Lord will I pay; in the presence of all his people. In the courts of the house of the Lord. In the midst of ye, o Jerusalem.
Thank you for your work, Michael.
New setup looks fire
Thanks Nahome! Same set up as last few videos, but I'm adjusting around with lighting
Michael help. I have a tone deaf student and I was looking for tips. I was so surprised when I saw your face 😂
Greysen!! I hope this helps haha
Good job!
I cant tell if this is serious
Just discovered your channel, thank you for the work you do. I am not a cantor but I am sure your channel will be great for those who are, and it is also interesting for me as I do want to learn the music at church.
Thanks you so much Michael. Please know that you're helping a lot of people and new churches.
@williamdai8796 Thanks William, I appreciate the kind words!
I love my brothers
Great vids they are really helping me. Could I check in the exercise why in the second from last bar why the initial "Dhi Gha" is chanted as one beat?
I believe I probably intended to put a gorgon there and I missed it... Good catch!
@@MichaelAzarMusicThanks so much! I was racking my brains there 😂
@milesfowler5020 Yes, I remember rushing to get this series out, my other series were lectures from a class I did and the material was not mine so I had to delete them all and swap them with my own. I guess this mistake went under the radar haha
I have been looking for this setting!!
Hello, hope you're doing well! What's the beat way to warm up ? Do you recommend any particular routine?
Hey Stan, I think I'll make a video on this and give my thoughts on a good regime
@@MichaelAzarMusic Nice idea! God bless you!
