Mike, if you're going to take this down gravel road, please install PPF on the entire car. Gravel will tear up the paint. Also, my vote is to keep it looking stock from the outside. Upgrade the drive train and make it a sleeper. This car is an awesome pick! I can't wait to watch the build!

Yep, I had a X reg Mars read ur quattro with the same tiger strip interior. This should be good. I note yours is on the later wheels with a deeper dish. I have owned a few, WR, MB and RR also 3B and ABY engine S2’s. Beautiful cars and the sound. Hope it’s a RS3 20v 5 pot 🙏
As an Audi and VW guy I am stoked to see a coupe Quattro build. My last wagon I had had a 2.5 5cylinder engine. I absolutely love them. A modern 07K engine would be awesome in this. Looking forward to seeing your plans.
Very excited to see how this project turns out! I would love to see one of these cars with the 5cyl from an RS-3 or TT-RS and a functioning DCT to go with it, but that would probably be nearly impossible and very cost prohibitive.
@@stanceworks you can run a steel block from a jetta. (07k) Same basic architecture as the evo engines that are in the TT RS and RS3 if that's the route you really wanted to go without spending crazy money for an aluminum evo engine.
I have such a love for Audi. My first car was a a4 b7 and now I’ve moved over seas and have a Audi A5 Sportback. The craziest thing is, I was blessed to see one yesterday on the highway! Congratulations man and welcome to the Audi fam

Nice man! I’m building 2 Sportquattro Group B replicas in Albuquerque New Mexico. I will be using an 07K 5 cyl engine on each one. I’m waiting to finish my AWD K swapped cars, and get my Datsun 2jz dialed in.
A 20v 2.5 diesel block hybrid, running around 25psi of boost would make this one of my favorite builds here on YT. Whatever you end up doing, I'll keep watching.....

I hope you put a heavily modified 5 cylinder from the TT RS/RS3 in there or the 4.2 V8 from Audi with a VF Engineering supercharger, custom headers and straight pipes in there.

I had a black 1983 for about 6 years. Hated working on the engine so had plans to swap in a vr5 engine. Still have the vr5 in the shed...It will go into an aw11 race car build soon. Lost my workshop space and had to decide what to keep. My 635 and race cars won over the quattro in the end. Would love to build a wide body one day. Keep up the awesome content! Cheers, Douglas
Growing up in Ireland watching Group B rally cars attack some of the most technical blacktop roads, this project is close to my heart. While I would personally favour a Metro 6r4 (wildest looking rally car ever designed?) anything from that era fills me with excitement. When cars were cars, racing was racing and men were men (unless they were Michele Mouton).
Awesome project. I vote for a TOTAL sleeper that looks 100% stock from the outside (yes down to the wheels) but makes massive power and has awesome handling to boot.
Mike, I started following you since you started the 308 project because I also have a yellow 1980 GTBi. But now you bought a quattro (I guessed it before you even removed the cover) because my dad had a grey one from 1987 to 1990. The car had a modified exhaust system and you could here it coming from miles (or kilometers since I grew up in Patagonia, Argentina. PD: my dad used to race track and rally as well.
If that was built in 81' (as an 82 MY) then you have one of only a few 82 MY cars in the US. They started sales in 83' for the main US cars. I also have an 82 MY full euro spec car that was a grey market import back in the 80s. Congrats on the purchase! These cars are incredible for the time they were produced in. You have a perfect car to modify since its not original already! Hope that is a 20v 5cyl of some sort under that cover, either an old school or 07k! Have to keep those beautiful sounds!

Love that you’re doing this car. My dad had one too- a 1983 AQTC- mars red- just like yours. It had the gold bbs wheels. I cleaned them many times! I dreamed of taking it to prom but it got t-boned, wrecking my dreams (and my dad’s heart- it was his favorite car). Can’t wait to see you make it mean! BTW- I’m guessing you have a modern turbo 5 from Audi or a turbo 6 from the b7 A4

I'm really not sure how you better one of these - literally my favourite car of all time after my dad had a non-quattro 5 cyl coupe as our family car in the 80s. I'm excited and yet slightly terrified about what's in store for such a nice example...The Ferrari having the Honda swap didn't bother me at all, but one of these with anything other than a 5 cylinder seems wrong....I'm watching in anticipation as you normally get these things spot on!
How did only 1 person guess it right? It's the most famous rally car in history. Even under the sheets it's easy to see what it is. Wether that is by the squared shape of the front grille or the edges of the roof. That car is unmistakable.
Definitely one of the best cars ever made. I am sure you will get a few raised eyebrows on converting something that is pretty rare, but you own the car and your work is always superb. Can’t wait to see what you do with it
That's a really nice car you have there. These chassis are ment to be capable of handling far more power than the factory ever gave them, so I hope that's the way you'll go with it. I don't think it needs any body mods. It's so clean and simple like it is. You never see them this nice any more.

I had the luck to drive one back around 2010 it had an s4 swap in it and was a monster. I was doing alignments at the time and the owner was super cool. I welded his sway bar bracket for him too and he let me take it for a rip..
My dad had one of these in the 90s and i miss it sooo much, absolute weapon of a car. Looking forward to the build whatever it brings (ferrari v8 from a 308? Lol). Agree with your comments about the chopped up "shorts" They never look correct!

You have to check the YT channel from ecs tuning. They did a jetta 5 cilinder turbo swap in a 944. Much cheaper than a Audi RS motor. Love the new project btw!

I agree. Half the car is the sound of the 10v 5cyl engine. Drove an Audi 100 10v turbo a couple years ago, so much fun!

I was shocked at the price of the TFSI engines when I first bought this car.

You have to check the YT channel from ecs tuning. They did a jetta 5 cilinder turbo swap in a 944. Much cheaper than a Audi RS motor. Love the new project btw!

Surely under the bench you have an Audi 4.2v8 ready to install into the family drivetrain - although the 4.2 into 80's quattro likely needs a conversion plate.
