Stoked on your engine choice, that Quattro has quite the pedigree behind it, from the 4wd system that it gets it name from to its Rally history. I'm super keen to see where exactly you go with this. Keeping the cars look and design intent and making it reliable with modern stuff is right down my alley
It’ll be a very purist-friendly build for anyone but the folks that say I should leave it alone. I want to bring it up to modern standards with standalone, all modern turbo components, etc.
@@stanceworks go ahead... As long as it sticks true to audi for most parts.. (As long as it still howling the same 5cylinder, turbo flutter, and fireballs from the exhaust and wastegate dump! ) 😹😹😹
Just an FYI, there's a difference between Four Wheel Drive (4WD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD). The main difference is that 4WD is selectable and usually locks the front and rear axels together, while AWD is always on and there's a diff or other mechanism between the front and rear axels to divide the power and allow for some slip. Of course there are some exceptions to that rule but the practical difference between them is that 4WD is typically for trucks and other off road vehicles for driving in the dirt, while AWD is typically for cars and road driving on asphalt.
Awesome choice! I did that exact swap back in 2011. Bolt on, use the motormount från the 10v and a 3b flywheel and it be a bolt-on. Mine did 450hp @ 1bar of boost and slightly above 700hp @ 2,2bar. Forged internals, 7a cams and headwork with a 70mm turbo, 1200cc injectors and e85 👍
This series makes me so happy Mike, the Quattro is one of my favorite cars ever, and the I5 one of my favorite engines. Love the video quality of your channel as well. This is going to be awesome.
I KNEW IT!!! MY MAN!!!! 20 valve 5 cylinders is the way to go!!! You might want to check out some german and swedish car channels...Because tuning the sound can be important...imo the best sound is only with rear damper with baffles...Man this will be cool...
I'm not a purist and I like seeing creative conversions but in the case of the Quattro I think you made the BEST choice! Those 5 cylinders sound amazing!
I came because of the 308, i stayed because of your style. At this point, i don't care the build you choose to do, i know i will learn a ton. The engine choice is perfect, i can't wait to watch the engine rebuild !
I am SO happy you are going 5 cylinder on this thing. 1. because it is just the right choice for this car and 2. because I think in some ways, at least for people not that in to Audis or German cars it is a somewhat underrated engine. Looking forward to seeing this become a nice clean example of a Quattro.
Oh this just keeps getting better and better! Had the privilege of driving a blue RS2 Avant on a de-restricted parts of the German Autobahn. That engine is mad.
As a car nut, serious amateur photographer, and future project car builder I have to say your channel ticks ALL of the boxes for me. Cool projects, great level of detail, educational, and beautifully photographed. The smoky shop shots and the Rembrandt lighting on the intro/outro were awesome! Please keep doing what you do.
Honestly you are doing the right swap. 5cyl sound awesome and 500whp on an old quattro will blow doors off most modern sports cars. Crazy how many hurdles you'd have to over come just to put any other than original engine in these.
i am SO HAPPY you kept a 5 cylinder in this thing. You could have gone with an 07K too, which is the cheaper newer 5 cylinder and theres a lot you can do with em, but they have their shortcomings too, the 20v you found is a plenty good option and i cant wait to see it go in.
What exactly are the short comings? I know IROZ motorsports uses the VW 07k blocks for their crazy builds...... An all stock 07k can reliable make 400 hp max. Which is pretty impressive since that engine was used for basic vehicles....
Outstanding! Great that your keeping the Audi 5 cylinder heritage. It will be a beast with that mesmerising Audi roar. Look forward to watching the build progress. Thumbs up from Sydney AUS. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
20v 5 cyl is amazing. German muscle motor right there. Know someone that had a urs4 with a 20v turbo and the thing was a beast. Glad you are keeping it true to its roots

Yep, that 5 cylinder sound is pretty special. I’ve always been a little triggered by the weight in front axle but, Audi made handle reasonably well. Swedes have been doing crazy things to these cars for years!

While crazy engine swaps are what brought me to your channel, I totally agree with the choice to maintain the audi-ness of this car. The 5 cyl is indeed one of the coolest sounding engines ever IMO. Keep up the great work!
Soo glad you are sticking with the Audi I5 - that sound is totally worth the effort, and it keeps the manufacturer's DNA while you add your own flair to power plant. Really looking forward to following this build.

I am so, so glad you went out of your way to keep the 5 cylinder Audi intact. You are absolutely correct in saying that the soul of the Quattro is its engine. There would be no reason to buy a Quattro if it came with anything that isn't the 5 cylinder.
1) love the explanation Mike! quality of the channel is incredible 2) these AAN 20v 5cyl will take endless amounts of abuse def the motor for this car 3) the 01E wow, when you showed that! incredible! def the trans for this car!!
YES! just perfect! If i ever have to do a swap , i'm the ''stick to the same brand'' type of guy. Im not the dude who will dislike the ferrari because its not my way of thinking, the project is just aweome!! But there, this fits my mind a bit more! Btw theres a french youtuber who posted a video yesterday where he got 800+ hp on this very same engine....looking forward to follow this new project!!
I cannot tell you how excited I am about this build. Just under 2 years ago I started working for Audi service and a little over a year ago I bought my "obtainable dream car" for the time being: a 2012 Audi RS3. Unfortunately it cracked a piston few months ago and now Im doing a complete engine rebuild/upgrade incl. forged internals, turbo ubgrade etc. Cant wait how it turns out and yours too! Thanks for the great content, you have been a true inspiration to me.
Best engine choice IMO. I have owned a lot of Audi's but after they added the service position. I love that I can pull the entire front end, including core support off, in 30ish minutes. I bet you'll be over 250k subs by the end of this project.
I've loved the Honda Swapped Ferrari build. I'm a GIGANTIC Audi fan. I can't wait to see what you do with this Quattro. I'm glad you went Audi 5cyl, but was truly hoping for a DAZA. I absolutely love my 2018 RS3 Stage 2 tuned.
I just sold my 1994 Audi UrS4. Best years for Audi in my opinion. The AAN is probably one of the most reliable engines out there. I have never seen an engine pull to red line without running out of breath. You can get 1000 hp easy out of these blocks.
I do not comment on RUclips much, if at all. But I must say I love this! A red ur-quattro is my all time dream car. Leaving that 5-cylinder rumble is a must. I was ready to say I hate your choice for the engine however crazy that would have been. Until I heard you were sticking with an Audi inline 5. Love it! Since it is literally my dream car I’m looking forward for the build. Came here for a Ferarri and I’m staying for the Audi (and the E36, to be honest…) 😁
I was a bit worried about what engine would go in it but, I do think you made the best choice! perfect sound, great engine, awd, and no major changes to the original metal. Also since it won't be a perfect original car you can enjoy it and not worry about driving it. Don't know what wheels you'll use for this but I would like to see some rally inspired wheels too. I'm excited for this!
While it’s not a daza this will be super dope regardless. You made a good choice, the modern stuff is unbelievably expensive as you said. Stoked to love vicariously through you on this project.
Phew, I'm happy that you are keeping the new engine within the Audi Family. At least there won't be wholesale body changes (including holes) and the original engine could be retro fitted if the prices of Quattros get even higher. Good luck.
Really digging the choice of upload. I know in the last ferrari video you were asking about how to release content... I think you're nailing it. Looking forward to the Audience journey.
Also, please make sure your 1-2 shift collar is the updated version, and if it isn't, put it in before you put it in the car. Huge pita but not getting locked out of 1-2 is a huge plus
YO!!! That’s EXACTLY what I was hoping you were going to put in. We always called that the “subi killer roar” at rally events. And a 6 speed!!! Whoa, I am turning on notifications now bro.
That's is exactly the right engine for this car. With soom good modification, you can have a safe 400 Bhp plus car. Good usable power and reliability is key here.
100% agree, the AAN is the only real choice for that car, and probably one of the single best sounding engines ever. I have been talking about doing an AAN swap for years. I think I will end up doing a full DAZA/Quattro swap into somthing really obscure.
Iconic car. Appropriately awesome, and utterly logical engine choice. Sensible and relatable project. I'm looking forward to the series. Thanks for a great channel Mike.
I'm so so so glad you're keeping a 5 pot in there. The most addictive engine sound ever! I have a stock'ish Volvo c70 with a 5 pot 2.3 Turbo T5 and i'd constantly drive a gear higher than i need to just to make it scream. :D
The rs2's came with the ADU I believe, the AAN you have there would have come from a urs4/6. Fantastic engines to drive. Strange powerband and lots of boost to get not a lot of power but it's still the engine I most regret selling.
It’s the only logical engine choice for these cars other than the 2.5rs engine. Stoked to see what you do with this car. I know you have a sick set of wheels set aside for it as well.
Okay, since you bought a 20V engine, you should know one thing - the heads have a tolerance for cracking between the valves and the spark plug. So if you open it and cry because it's cracked, don't worry about it too much. You can either get it welded up, or just forget about it. It's technically not considered a fault, even though it 100% feels like one
Glad to see you're sticking with an Audi engine. I was hoping it would be the Porsche built Audi drive line but I'm stoked none the less. Can't wait to see this smoking the tires
Nice project with the right engine. The main problem on the quattro is the intercooler. No room for it. A water/meth injection can help but it’s not the best solution. Put a aftermarket ecu like MaxxEcu, Emu Black or VEMS on it. This fits many of the problems with not available parts. Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪
Hey man, FYI the AAN engine is coming from the S4, not the RS2. You might have problems with fitting the stock intake manifold of the AAN next to the watercooler of the UrQuattro, because the S4 does have more room in front of the engine. The RS2 engine does have a different intake manifold, which snakes around in front of the watercooler sitting next to the engine. Just so you know!
I started watching you take out the engine from a classic Ferrari and replacing it with a Honda , now you're re-engine-ing an iconic Quattro - some really interesting stuff. Looking forward to seeing where this goes ! Great stuff so far . Really interesting channel.
Welcome to VAG! “Special” tools at every turn. You’ll learn to appreciate and love it. In due time. Stop thinking it’ll be a BMW 😘 So stoked you went AAN 20V!
This is the right engine for sure. If you can get a 2.5l diesel block, you will have the basis for a 1000-1200 hp engine down the road. That's what they do here in Scandinavia. Good luck.
Perfect choice. The 5cyl sounds amazing and keeps the rally spirit right in check. The 6 speed is the icing on the cake. Hoping this one gets the same level of detail and “cleanness” that the Ferrari has gotten. Looks like a fantastic base for a really nice daily.
So glad you were able to save one of the few remaining AAN's. GET THE HEAD CHECK FOR CRACKS, they're known for that! Metal head gasket, head studs, RS2 EVO cast turbo manifold and a set of rods and she'll make 500whp all day with a good turbo. This was definitely the easy-button compared to a 07K swap.
So happy to see this! Had a 1st gen S4 way back with an AAN - so this takes me back. Back then you would stroke it using parts from the 2.5 TDI and steal the camshaft off an 7A (2.3 NA engine found in the Audi 90) as they had more lift. Also no where near the same selection in turbos as today, but I had it running a K28 with the K24 exhaust housing if I remember correctly. Early 2000s tuning was different😅
Looking forward to this build! My first car was a 1985 5000s. That 5 cylinder was no joke. Bringing back memories of days long gone by. Good luck with this build.

I love how you're a classic Hot Rodder with a unique style. Keep these coming.
Happy on the engine choice, 5cyl is always the answer
Glad to see you're sticking with an Audi engine. I was hoping it would be the Porsche built Audi drive line but I'm stoked none the less. Can't wait to see this smoking the tires
Loved the ,"Bozzy," nod!!! Love the choice!!! Thank you sir
Just so you know!
intake from the s2 would do the same as the RS2.
Yep. S2 ABY intake is identical... 👍
RS2 engine was the ADU unit.
@@simongranheim9737 except the "porsche" which make it $$$$$
Wagner after market intake an ic is the way to go, maybe a problem getting in the us, but here in Europe (denmark that's the way to go) regards sören
Keeping it OG. Down with that!
Currently watching this video with a TTRS sitting in front of me. 5 cyl vibes.
Good choice on the new engine sir.
It will be a blast to follow this series.
Stop thinking it’ll be a BMW 😘
So stoked you went AAN 20V!
I am so glad you are keeping the audi family for the motor. This is going to be an awesome build for sure.
You are nailing it on your car choices!!! PERFECT engine choice!!!
Go full gravel spec on the suspension and wheels! PLEASE!
This is the right engine for sure. If you can get a 2.5l diesel block, you will have the basis for a 1000-1200 hp engine down the road. That's what they do here in Scandinavia. Good luck.
I'm a Volvo 5 cylinder guy, but am just a 5 cylinder fan in general. Good luck on the swap!
Perfect! Always build cars for yourself Mike, that’s why we all follow Stanceworks/you.
I've always loved the older Quattro... Kinda jealous of this build bro... Get after it!
Perfect choice. The 5cyl sounds amazing and keeps the rally spirit right in check. The 6 speed is the icing on the cake.
Hoping this one gets the same level of detail and “cleanness” that the Ferrari has gotten. Looks like a fantastic base for a really nice daily.
this quattro is way cooler than the ferrari imo, also glad to see you keeping a 5 cylinder in the car, super excited to see what this turns into.
Epic engine choice. You have to install the original type waste gate !! That sound!
