@@SouthMainAuto , Not many mechanics these days can trace Electronic and/or Mechanical problems within a vehicle these days .. They sum it up by plugging in a L.E.T ( which they twice failed )
I have owned and operated a shop for 49 years and still learn something new every time I watch. I teach also and always go to you for guidance as how to present myself to keep my students interested..... I would have vacuumed that area very thoroughly and sprayed a light coat of WD40 or the like.... Keep up the great work
Great job. If you get another sinus infection try one of those powered nasal wash machines (like a neti pot) about $40 bucks from CVS but you get instant relief.
My grandfather's doctor described your health condition as "too many birthdays" My 96 year old grandfather outlived that doctor and several others! Drove himself to the doctors 2 weeks before he died of lung failure. I learned a lot from grandpa!
Alls I can say is THANK YOU!!!! Your video was spot on to the problem I was having. I had replaced a few of the parts myself and was about to send it to a shop. I pulled the fuse cover and it was exactly as you had videotaped. Exactly!! Alls the wife and I could do was laugh how spot on it was and we kept saying "Thank you RUclips. Brown wire with a white tracer, repaired all the wires those little critters lived on for awhile and everything worked perfectly. Thank you again!!!
Went through changing a few parts and then came across this video. Didn't find a nest but found a crammed wire pinched in half by the cover. Cut, soldered, heat tubed and got my 4wd back! Awesome brother!!
Once again, a dealership is supposed to have the best techs to tackle these difficult electrical problems. Yet as usual they are lazy and only want to play with their fancy flash programmers. Eric O took his time, isolated the issue, and found the obvious problem. I never get tired of seeing true quality diagnostics by SMA. This channel should have over 1,000,000 subscribers! Great job Eric O.
😆 I want to take one of my 80s Chevy square bodies to the dealer and just see if they can figure put how to work on them. Then again I don't really want to ruin 2 perfectly good classics.
Man I can't even express how much I appreciate this. Just pulled my box up and huge nest! This was after replacing all of my 4wd electrical components. You are the man Eric!! My wife can stand to be around me once again😆
Wiring diagrams are the real tool! Great job Eric! I do a lot of repairs that are others screw ups. It is not just dealerships that screw up. To be honest we all do! Those who truly understand electronics have a huge advantage over those who don't.
Brother...I've been trying to hunt this down for probably 24 months. I haven't found any threads in forums covering how to isolate the wiring, everything just says replace the encoder motor, test the switch at the dash, etc, etc, etc. My issue turned out to be the EXACT same thing, so lucky-ish for me, but man, I just didn't know where to look for those wires at the connector next to the fuse block. I will definitely be donating soon. Thank you so much, and even on a day when you don't feel good at all, you were able to provide something that has made me VERY grateful. thank you thank you thank you. I hope you are getting everything you need in life. Love this, love you, keep up the legit work.
Kudos to you and to GM for providing good diagnostic info that pointed right to the problem. Shame on the other shop and especially the dealer for failing to diagnose a relatively simple problem and missing or ignoring the rats nest.
Eric , you are the best, giving the mouse credit for creating the problem, the customer should look at this to see what kind of problems these little critters cause.
Dealer service dept....Opens book, book says..."Replace rear bumper and work your way forward until customer complaint goes away"! ZERO diagnostic skills these days!
A day at work normally made me feel better if I was sick. Better than thinking about it at home every minute. Nice clean work again You Da Man Mr "E" Thanks for sharing pal!
I had the same problem. Never had sinus infections. Got one and then kept getting them. Turns out my doc wasn't keeping me on the antibiotics long enough so it never totally went away. Went to a new doc and he blasted me with antibiotics for a couple of months to be sure. Never came back. Good luck man hope you get better.
Eric.... I feel for you.... I have had some kind of Respiratory Infection for the last 30 days or so too.... Knocks the "get-up-and-go" out of you. Good call on the direction to go, and I too expected a corroded connector but.... SURPRISE!!! There was a saying.... Sylvester??? "I HATE MEECES TO PIECES!" I had them in my Travel Trailer last year and what a "stinking mess!" It took me a month to find and repair all the damage. The REALLY FRUSTRATING THING was that they ate ALL the insulation off a 10 inch piece of energized 120 Volt Loomex cable without a FATAL SHORT CIRCUIT. No Justice! Get better and keep up the good work. And remember...... If you can do it........ a Dealer COULD do it, but.... they don't have the drive and, they would prefer to sell you a new one.
Eric - end sentence for this episode should be: "If I can do it, your dealer can't do it". Really - they should not name themselves as dealers if they can't repair own cars. Good job Eric, again :)
Thank you Eric. Good job. Water is the key. I used to get sinus infections bad every year. Use to drink mostly sodas. Stopped sodas 13 years ago and drink filtered water. Half to one gallon a day. Have not had sinus infection nor the flu in 13 years. Also rest. At least 7 hours a night. Hope this helps. Take care.
Agree "Billy Yoder", I just figured this out after years and years of sinus infections. If I keep really well hydrated, not much problem. It really does help, but it is a bit of a pain having "to go" all the time :)
Billy Yoder I agree with the sinus infections and staying hydrated. The few times I do get sick or congested, I use the neti pot with 2 or 3 drops of essential oil, like eucalyptus or rosemary, etc. It just helps with any pain and heals much quicker. I also use the pot when doing nasty jobs just to thoroughly clear out my nose & cavities, like when working high dust/dirt, even with a mask isn't 100%
21:26 - that green corrosion on that bolt is killing me.....im a pop my fuse box and make sure it's nice and krowned in by any bolts, i never thought of corrosion there. One of the many little pieces of information that wasn`t exactly the main point of the video....but yet knowledge i pull away from your channel Eric. Thanks again. - Eric O ....A Great Man , Ladys & Gentleman.
The mouse motel had mice in it! 😁 I seem to never win that gamble - if I go inside, the problem is under the hood. If I go under the hood, it's inside. Never fails! Hope you feel better, man. Sinus infections SUCK. Only had one my entire life, back when I was living in CA (I got some nasty stuff out West a couple times) 17 years ago. Hurt so bad I couldn't laugh, cough or bend forward in any way. Started after I spent a cold day out in the shed rebuilding a Honda QA50 engine - nose got the cold drip, and it was all over from there. Took me a good 4 days to kick the pain, too. I always have to watch stuff like that, thanks to my asthma, it'll usually go right to my lungs. I got busy here all of a sudden. Had to tow in a dead '04 PT Cruiser with a snapped rubber band, and got my buddy's girlfriend's '03 Buick that needs tires, hub bearings, and sway bar end links. Coincidently I had a guy stop by yesterday with a '02 Chevy 1500 with no communication to the transfer case. He had been playing swaptronics, and just wanted to read and clear the codes, so I did that. He had a Cardone x-fer case motor (I know there's a name for that unit - brain fart right now ...) that split in half, lol, and a junkyard unit that didn't work either. I really didn't have a clue as to what direction to point him in - he'd already replaced every electric and electronic part on the 4x4 system. I figured the no-comm was due to the junkyard unit he installed. I just got paid to read and clear codes, so he's on his own there. Wouldn't doubt if there were mice in this one in the exact same spot!
Thank you for these videos I own a 01 Sierra and you’ve helped me out a lot ! Respect for taking your time to make this video while you’re sick and still doing your everyday job to pay bills. Much appreciated 🙏

Eric O saves the day again, i wonder if the other shops and dealerships feel like a chump when they see how quickly Sma finds and repairs it for them. Mr O is the man
You may have just saved my rear. I’ve got the exact same issue with my Silverado z71. Noticed seeds and poop under the under hood fuse box. I didn’t pull the entire plastic cover off. Just the lid. I bet when I go pull the whole thing off tomorrow I find a nest just like you did. I’ve been so lost man. Thank you immensely for the video!!
It's amazing how some of the other shops stay in business. The first thing is they have to be able to read a wiring diagram. Good job finding that broken wire.
First I hope you get well soon, and I have come to realize that the dealer(s) will only tell you what your neighborhood parts store will. They have gotten lazy & their clock is always running like a leak in their million dollar wallets. I love it when I can diagnose it with a simple look-e-loo. Thanks for the info again.
Great job. Hard to believe the dealer did not find/suspect the mouse nest being the problem.Had a mouse build a nest in my heater fan. Must have been a real shock to him when I turned the fan on! I hope your Dr. is as good at diagnosing medical problems as you are at diagnosing automotive electrical problems.
I just went to a ear, nose and throat doctor. I was in his office for 10 minutes and they charged me $1,463 and thanks to the affordable care act, I have a $5,ooo deductible. All dealers suck, most of their "mechanics" have little to no experience. Great video as always.
Gary's Garage you chose your ACA Plan and if your state didnt expand medicade then the reimbursement federal money is sitting in a fed bank waiting. Quit whining like a republican snowflake
I chose one of two plans my employer offered. The other plan was twice as much pre month and would be close to half my pay check. Not sure what Medicaid has to do with it.
Eric, Your troubleshooting skills are excellent, but your luck in finding the problems are even better.Time to go to the casino. Love your show, keep up the great videos, and get over that sinus infection.
Hope you feel better. We had a 1999 corvette.it was a few years old .Sent to the dealer and they could not find the problem.Turns out it was a bad battery..Go to school to work on cars and can`t.lol..Rest and meds and sleep.Get well soon.
Don't know if you'll see this comment, but great job on showing exactly what you did at each step along the way. I have the exact same code on an exact same vehicle and I have rodents that like to find their way into the truck - maybe I'll go straight to looking under the fuse box cover to see if somebody has set up housekeeping! I would really like to fix this with a single wire repair that I don't have to stand on my head to get to!
You have to admit, not a bad little mouse house, nice roof and sturdy walls. Get to feeling better Eric, Ive been trying to stay away from any one sick. So far so good. Sinus infections are the worse. The underlying problem is ......AGE :)
Looks like I have the EXACT same issue. I had noticed the turds in there when first ts this, but I didn't know the wires came up right to there. My guy got a few more wires, but just GRATEFUL to have found the problem so many MONTHS later...guh! Glad I didn't spend the 150-250 and time on replacing the encoder motor!
So let me get this straight. Eric O, even when sick, stuffy sinus, thoughts hazy feeling like sh*t, finds and fixes something two other shops (one a dealer) couldn't. My god, GM ought revoke that dealers privileges.. or at minimum give the customer money back. Amazing. Kudos again Mr O.
Like I say, our local dealer is a joke. This obviously should have been a walk in the park for them. After all I used their tool and their info to fix it :)
As always...great progressive what if and search out. I only wish I had more of the electronic basics to be able to follow your exceptional logical path. Really appreciate your presence here. Have helped me understand my Chrysler 05 Pacifica 3.5l much more than before especially when it come to code fixes and tracking down the causes. Hope you now tune up your own health. Don't push it off. ...Gus from Wisconsin.
Great job and video. Speedy recovery Mr. O. My buddy had a similar situation but in his case he lived next to a park and squirrels build a nest and cut lots of wires. The dealer ended up replacing wire harness.
Sorry your not feeling well but thanks for the info. I have the same thing going on with an 01 GMC transfer case. This was helpful and will save me some time when I get her on the rack. Thanks again brother...Feel better.
Damn!!!! The salt they use in NY is epic. Being left handed the guys I worked with gave me hell for having the zip ties backwards. What bugged me was the guys that didn't cut off the tie tails flush or cut them on the diagonal that made them super sharp
You're a workaholic eric! Gets some good rest! Take care of your self first so you can help and take care of others especially your family! Hope you feel better soon!
Used to have my own repair shop years ago, had a customer come in with a Cadillac cts with electrical issues , while diagnosing removed two full plastic grocery store bags of mouse nesting material. After repairing a multitude of chewed up wiring , she informed me that she couldn't possibly have mouse damage because she lived in an upscale neighborhood !
After months of trouble shooting this same problem I popped the fuse cover after watching this and there it was. The exact same wire. Almost like gm put rat nip on this wire. Thank you!!
50/50 Guess? I'd say it was a good guess based on you seeing the "crusties" early when you energized the battery. I call that Experience and Knowledge!! Great job as always! Hope you feel better soon!!!
I am a fellow sinus sufferer. To get better quickly use the sinus cleaner squirt bottle. Flush that rat nest nose out. All that mucus just continues to breed the illness and getting it out works incredibly good. Hope you feel better
Seriously, pick this up, Flush your nose a couple times a day. You won't believe how it helps.www.amazon.com/Neilmed-Sinus-Rinse-Starter-Pack/dp/B00E4MOZXS/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1518577614&sr=8-6&keywords=nasal%2Brinse&th=1
Being sick sucks. Working on vehicles while being sick sucks even more. That being said, good job on the diag and fix. And people wonder why I keep driving my older trucks with the manual transfer case and locking hubs. 1) I like 'em. 2) I don't want to deal with a bunch of 'lectronics when plowing snow. 3) See 9:42-9:45 I've told a lot of people in the past that I could fix their vehicle problems for 99¢ plus tax. They've looked at me and questioned 'Why so cheap?' I tell them that's all a 'For Sale' sign costs at the hardware store. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
EO love ya subbed awhile ago. My mom has a 1976 Chevy Silverado 4x4 Fleetside longbox square body since I was 8. I am now 40-41 years old and that 70's+ steel will still run and replacement motor. 450-500,000+ Maybe sickly some days. has never left her alone. Computer shit is crap fear for my 2017 Chevy Cruze LS not even at 3,000 on the clock.
I feel ya on the sick part, was doing find and got hit with it the start of the weekend. That just blew. Thanks for a other kick ass video. Have a good one. :)
This tells me the Mechanics at the dealership are relying on their equipment, not their eyes. Working on ANY vehicle is more than just plugging in a machine and reading codes or voltages. If the voltage is not at the proper level, or the issue dictates finding the issue as far as why a signal wire is not working properly. I have found nests in all kinds of vehicles over the years, and in dumb places. I once had a snowmobile backfire in my shop and it blew acorns all over the shop because a chipmunk had stuffed the ecaust full of acorns. I also found the nest in the airbox in the snowmobile stored next to that one. I found a mouse nest in the fresh air box in the glove box behind the cabin filter. The dealer had marked on the inspection that the cabin filter had been replaced, yeah sure buddy! There's your problem lady! I always check airboxes, filter boxes and cabin filters now,as well as fuse boxes,ESPECIALLY FUSE BOXES. Especially if the vehicle has sat for a while.
I'm glad you posted this video. I can't tell you how much I enjoy following along with the logic and common sense approach that you possess and portray in each video. Your ability to explain the testing procedures while keeping the camera angles, lighting, and editing on point, is truly an art form that few can master. In my life there has been three things that intimidate me. Math, electronics and a guy named Loyd in Florida. Really. I consider you a personal friend but beyond that, your videos have helped me more that you know.
He was actually a "brother" in my motorcycle club days. He was a good dude until he started drinking tequila, then all bets we're off. He was...you know what? This is a better story around a camp fire. I'll wait until we can sit together. Remind me to tell you this story. :)
Thanks for your efforts in informing us , Especially while being sick ! While hoping to solve my problem w/ 03 Chevy Avalanche staying in 4 LO .. I work for a major Auto Manufacturer here in Ohio . I had same problems with my health when I moved to a different area ( of shop , In which I fired the cars up and drove them off the Line for 1st time ) which brought me almost to a stand still ( Sinus infections , Bronchitis and Pneumonia ) C02 all but did me in ! I couldn't walk a flight of stairs without wheezing etc.. check your ventilation .. Hit me hard at age 55 ..Thanks again for sharing your knowledge .. RJ
Man I've been racking my brain and I've replaced just about everything and I took it to a dealer they supposably fixed all my wiring because I had a bad rat problem to but 850 dollars later it was all that little wire that fixed it thank you sir that's awesome!
Problem with dealerships is they do not want to work on cars more than 6 years old. This was a 2004. Their techs see the newer cars in warranty every day and then maybe cars 2 or 3 years past warranty. Read codes, swap parts, pattern failures, oil and brakes. They don't know how to actually diagnose a problem on an older car that is breaking down with rust and cracked wires. Flat rate dealer techs would not want to touch this.
This is literally an insanely good video on troubleshooting. I'm an EE and Eric does just as well as I do in every aspect in shooting down these issues. I wish you worked with me Eric , you'd replace half a dozen morons with EE designations who can't find simple faults.
I would of never thought to look next to the fuse box under there same problem all 6 wire's chewed threw.. 🤦🤦 your a time saver thanks for sharing got it running perfect
Thanks Man! Best tip eva, someone on RUclips told of simply twisting the ends of the wire ties until they break away. It leaves a smooth break. No more scratches and cuts from wire ties! You still need a pliers to twist. It's an awesome life hack! Please feel better, "we need ya man"!
Wow! Great video, thanks so much! I'm willing to bet I'll find something similar to this on my Suburban when I look at it again tonight. It sat without being driven for 19 months and there is evidence that mice have visited. All of the 4WD button lights are on along with the CHECK 4WD message. I wouldn't be surprised to find a similar pile of mouse mulch in the same area.
Not very many people can troubleshoot anymore... Automotive Technicians like Eric are a dying breed... Nice job!
Just a mechanic my friend, nothing more
@@SouthMainAuto a *true* mechanic; one that is competent and honest and humble. I guess RUclips has *two* humble mechanics!

Dealerships do maintenance on cars 7 years and newer, they arent the cutting edge on older cars.
"And remember if I can do it, you can do it, but not the dealer"
Perfect.
I should wreck that car the chassis beams are rotten
Dealers just won't charge for the diagnosis time therefore, the mechanics do accordingly. If they were smart, they would wise up in that arena.
Dealers are mafia remember 🤣

I hope your Dr. is as good at diagnosing medical problems as you are at diagnosing automotive electrical problems.
Eric O., in pure boss mode. Even when under the weather. Slow clap.
Great diagnosis Eric. Difficult to even think when you are ill.
If Eric O had been a tech for NASA Jim Lovell would have been the 5th man to walk on the moon. You are the best!
Get well soon
God bless
Paul
Eric, your judgement is so perfected. Respect!
Get well soon ! Hope the doc has the right diagnostic equipment !!
It's great to see someone that actually knows what he is doing! I refer to his video's a lot for information and suggestions.
Hope you feel better Eric
He humbly calls it luck, but I’ll call it informed probability.
Hope you feel better. We had a 1999 corvette.it was a few years old .Sent to the dealer and they could not find the problem.Turns out it was a bad battery..Go to school to work on cars and can`t.lol..Rest and meds and sleep.Get well soon.
In general Eric, your videos don't suck at all. So.. don't worry about that.
Sick and still doin it better than the dealer! Great work
So let me get this straight.
Eric is sick. That's the viral video you were hoping for.
2000 Chevy, same problem. Rat chewed same wire, same location. Watching his video saved be a lot of time.
Great job and video.
Speedy recovery Mr. O. My buddy had a similar situation but in his case he lived next to a park and squirrels build a nest and cut lots of wires. The dealer ended up replacing wire harness.
Yeah the dealer will not fix wires, they sell harnesses
Sorry your not feeling well but thanks for the info. I have the same thing going on with an 01 GMC transfer case. This was helpful and will save me some time when I get her on the rack. Thanks again brother...Feel better.
26:54 i thought you were going to quote futurama "awesome to the max" lol, good job done as always.
Damn!!!! The salt they use in NY is epic. Being left handed the guys I worked with gave me hell for having the zip ties backwards. What bugged me was the guys that didn't cut off the tie tails flush or cut them on the diagonal that made them super sharp
Another example of why stealerships are a waste of your time and money.
Love these kind of finds. Some times it’s the “let me just look over here real quick before I go any further.” And there it is.
One of the best vids you've done. Thanks for taking us along......SICKO.
You're a workaholic eric!
Gets some good rest!
Take care of your self first so you can help and take care of others especially your family!
Hope you feel better soon!
Eric O. Great video as always go get yourself a z-pack (Zithromax) I hope you feel better.
Absolutely Ericks the man when it comes to out shining those other shops
Eric, you are the man! My hates off to you brother. That was a great call. Sorry you feel like crap and get better my friend!
This is why I work on my own stuff , if a dealer could not find that then there is no hope .
After months of trouble shooting this same problem I popped the fuse cover after watching this and there it was. The exact same wire. Almost like gm put rat nip on this wire. Thank you!!
Thanks for orienting the zip ties the same way.
-Your friendly neighborhood OCD Bro
50/50 Guess? I'd say it was a good guess based on you seeing the "crusties" early when you energized the battery. I call that Experience and Knowledge!! Great job as always! Hope you feel better soon!!!
You are the best. Hope you feel better soon
You won't believe how it helps.www.amazon.com/Neilmed-Sinus-Rinse-Starter-Pack/dp/B00E4MOZXS/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1518577614&sr=8-6&keywords=nasal%2Brinse&th=1
snort a little brake clean it will take care of that infection
🙃🙄🤣😀
👑🙃🤣
I'd be careful with that! Friend got hooked on brake fluid! Though he could stop anytime!
3) See 9:42-9:45
I've told a lot of people in the past that I could fix their vehicle problems for 99¢ plus tax. They've looked at me and questioned 'Why so cheap?' I tell them that's all a 'For Sale' sign costs at the hardware store.
Hope you get to feeling better soon.
Hope you are feeling better. Good video!
And it has earned sick days.
No, it only tells you that an incompetent mechanic did a bad job. Bad mechanics/technicians exist everywhere, from the dealerships to the DIY garage.
I really like the diagnostic videos, they help me out substantially thank you.
Hope you feel better soon Eric.
Sooo this Loyd guy in FL. You need help? I "know a guy" if ya do ;)
He was actually a "brother" in my motorcycle club days. He was a good dude until he started drinking tequila, then all bets we're off. He was...you know what? This is a better story around a camp fire. I'll wait until we can sit together. Remind me to tell you this story. :)
I really appreciate these videos. They help me have a greater understanding of proper troubleshooting.
WOW! sick and still better than MOST "tech's" out there, Great job as usual,........BTW, Zicam when you feel a cold coming on.
RJ
South Main Auto “We Fix What The Dealers Too Lazy To Do”
Man I've been racking my brain and I've replaced just about everything and I took it to a dealer they supposably fixed all my wiring because I had a bad rat problem to but 850 dollars later it was all that little wire that fixed it thank you sir that's awesome!
"If I get down, I have a hard time getting back up..." Story of my life as an 'old dude' Mr. O
Good thing you were wearing gloves when you had to wipe the dealers butts for them. Get well soon Eric, Your the man!
Nope, wrong. You should go work at dealership and see what it's really like.
Its hard to believe that the other 2 places couldnt track this down. Such common sense I think. Good gamble!
Awesome video as always Eric. I hope you feel better!
This is literally an insanely good video on troubleshooting. I'm an EE and Eric does just as well as I do in every aspect in shooting down these issues. I wish you worked with me Eric , you'd replace half a dozen morons with EE designations who can't find simple faults.
Do the timing belt and your sinuses will disappear ....Great vid mate.....get well soon
I would of never thought to look next to the fuse box under there same problem all 6 wire's chewed threw.. 🤦🤦 your a time saver thanks for sharing got it running perfect
I'm with you... no mouse poop! little pests carry all sorts of nasty stuff. Cool find nice fix well done and enjoyable as always.
Thanks Man!
Best tip eva, someone on RUclips told of simply twisting the ends of the wire ties until they break away. It leaves a smooth break. No more scratches and cuts from wire ties!
You still need a pliers to twist. It's an awesome life hack!
Please feel better, "we need ya man"!
Tried this after I saw that tip. Didn't work with my wire ties. Maybe they're cheap models or something.
Well that embarrassing for the stealer. When you get the auld grey Matter working Eric you could fix a wire in a mouse nest. AND THATS A FACT. 👍🏻
