Honestly, while it seems mean spirited, you’d have to understand the Japanese culture to really grasp that it’s very much in good spirit. My proof: born and raised in Tokyo.
It’s called contrast. These jokes are the opposite of what the culture stands for. Play these jokes on your average person in New Jersey.. in particular Newark, Jersey City or Camden God forbid expect to get your wig split
Writer: The prank is a woman wakes up in the midst of a mass genocide, everyone is dead around her, she experiences lifelong trauma, just like Hiroshima. Producer: why in the world would we ever do that? Writer: people at home will laugh! Producer: let’s do it!
There was a clip I seen one, I think it's from Brazil, where they had a stand set up on the street where you couldn't see in it but there was a hole you could stick your face into. I dunno what they were saying to people that walked by but they were like singing something that made people go look into he hole & then their throw a pie at their face lol.

Oh, you’re auditioning for the show? Okay. Can you look really stupid? Can you overact? Do you care if you get hurt? (The flying outhouse ones are hilarious tho!)
They might seem that way, only because of how bubblegum, candy, participation trophy the west is. I grew up in Tokyo. This is mostly in good fun. We just have a culture of tending to pick apart pranks on others. If the contestants in the show grew up with little to no struggle, then they would probably take it as mean spirited and traumatic. But for those who have struggled through real adversity, this doesn’t even come close to mean spirited. Especially since most of these contestants are paid actors.
@@Robisquick I doubt seriously that the women in the elevator were paid actors. If they were, they should be fired; their responses could have been far more interesting. As for those who "struggled with real adversity," I'm not sure who you mean. The shows are targeted at a young demographic and in the three years I lived in Japan-which was in the mid '80s-I found that the standard of living was high enough that about the highest amount of suffering I saw was by students overworked at the cram schools they went to so they could get into universities where they would join clubs and have far more fun than even American students have for four years.
@@billmarshall8438 I was born in Tokyo in the 90s. Lived there for 9.5 years. I’m telling you that most were paid actors for legal reasons. Apart from that though, those who would take small $50 per day roles were either in lower to middle wealth or students. There’s a nature of excessive work and a stress and loneliness epidemic. I’m mainly saying that in the 90s, people in general in first world or developing/first world were exposed to more, less sheltered, and therefore naturally would generally develop a thicker skin than todays standards. These pranks were risqué for sure. And I’ll grant you the elevator prank is likely the most intense, but given the time period we are watching which is 90s to early 2000s, this isn’t culturally in the “mean spirited” category. If these shows were from 2016-2022, especially after #metoo, it might be understandable as mean spirited. But I don’t think there’s a good argument to be made that these are mean spirited given the context.
but it's in Japan so all the reactions are sort of different and the pranks more mean. And all on TV! :D thank you Japan for your strange weird meanness.
Just imagining landing a job position then going to the “office” day 1, getting stuck in an elevator, jumped at by some demon, then find out it’s a prank show.
Honestly had a hard time watching these. I'm not sure seeing someone cry in fear is amusing...even if it is staged, which would make it less funny if that's what's they're going for.
I always love their TV, it's like when British people had an identity and their own humor and TV, some wild funny stuff that would be considered illegal by their modern standards now. Love how crazy japan has stayed!
I'm from the UK and, unfortunately, you're correct, about everything. That scene at 5:48 was done on a British TV programme from the early 2000s, or late 90s, called Trigger Happy TV.

There's no middle ground between "mildly inconvenient" and "traumatising experience" in Japanese pranks is there?
You haven't seen the talking while you're given a 'hand', on live TV?
Japan is a very structured and orderly society but when it goes sideways it does so in a very weird and twisted way.
The old lady in the hair salon was my favourite. The people all over the stairs had me rolling. 😂
I honestly think I would just never leave my house if I lived in Japan
That's what the hikikomori think too
So damn right man. This is world class entertainment, as addictive as the pizza right in my hands while standing in front of it.
6:17 - Well, he did put up a clever tactical defense while screaming.
Yaaaaaay, it's back! The scene with the lady having her hair cut will always be my favourite!
They're trying to kill people by giving them heart attacks? Jeez.. 😂
They still tried to drink the water.😂😂😂
💯 😂 That last guy was so cute. He was trying so hard to drink from it, carefully inching his way in

Cynic here. Are the "victims" paid actors? Even a slightly aggressive person might get physical with the ghost actors, so these shows are suspect
