Not a bad system if you ask me. Perfect size to hook up to a TV or similar for media playback etc.
I also like the fact you can add two NVME's to this one - I'd go for dual NVMe and a SATA HDD for general storage.
And yeah I'd also want HDMI instead of VGA... just the right compatible part.

I ended up stealing the HDMI from a newer G4 I purchased.

The latest Intel CPUs e.g. Alderlake should support PCIe 04. PCI 4 adapters are also available. Will be expensive. Bought a Samsung 980 pro with PCI 4. Runs with PCI 3x4. But only at half the speed. Will probably only have an effect when transporting large amounts of data.

The HP elitedesk mini G5 has PCI 3x4, is there anything that could be changed? Convert to PCI 4x4.
The fast NVMe disks PCIe 4x4 only run at half speed

Is the question can the PCI speed of the G5 be increased?

In my opinion, from the G2 onward, the design of these minis seem to get worse and worse! I also noticed that HP brought back the thumb screw on the back of the G4 and G5 after the slider lock on the G3 had obviously been declared a disaster. The components on every generation, from the G3 onward, seems very CRAMPED! I still stand by my first assessment that the G2 was the best designed mini of them all. The top cover and face plate on the G2 seems more robust and constructed out of a sturdier plastic compared to the preceding units. The plastic on the face plates of the G3, G4, and G5 seems very flimsy and can be easily flexed, which indicates that HP has been cutting costs on their newer minis. After seeing all the generations of the HP minis I am not really impressed with any of them, other than the G2! Every generation of these units has its good points. It's just really a shame that HP cannot take all the good points of every unit, and combine them into one great mini!

I'm looking over my G2 and G3 units again. I think the G2 is so unique in that it overcame obstacles with the G1 but still had that "look" that changed with the G3. I also like the G3 because it was sort of a G1 2.0 with it's own challenges and I love that it supports the 2230 much better than future generations.

dell seems getting worse as well with their similar 1L case machine. so far, only Lenovo seems improving nicely and refining their designs.

I suspect these 128 skhynix drives are not the fastest. Are yours 2280 or 2230?

My SSD NVME 256 GB is 2230 and SSD NVME 512 GB is 2280. This 256 GB was from my dell 7080 i5 10500t speed read was 2400 MB/s but on my dell now I have SSD NVME 2280 1TB PCIe 4.0x4 and read speed is 3450 MB/s on Transfer mode PCIe 3.0x4.
Also your disk has some low temperatures and check if it changes or if the sensor just doesn't show well or is not there. On my disks, the temperature is between 25 and 50 degrees Celsius.

Thanks for the advice on the sensors. I haven't run that unit too extensively but I'll see 9f the temps change.
