Upgrading/Cloning a SATA SSD to M.2 NVME

My main computer, an EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini, was getting a bit slow with disk reads so I decided to clone the drive to a faster M.2 NVME drive. EliteDesk 800 G3 Aluminum vs Copper Heatsink
I did this with my Elitedesk 800 G1 Mini (65W) and Elitedesk 800 G3 Mini (35W). The only NVME drive I have laying around at the moment is a Samsung PM991A that's in my UGREEN M.2 NVME enclosure and it came with a pad heatsink I had to put on. And I found some funny but also shocking discovery with the G3. With the G1, putting the caddy back on with the pad heatsink was a bit flimsy. But everything fit anyway and it worked like a charm. I tried it with my G3 Mini today, but it was in a bootloop and didn't show any picture. Now I didn't have the original Wifi slot screw with this one (since it didn't came with a Wifi slot), so I used a 2*6 screw from a laptop. I don't know if that was the cause, but it did work without the 2.5 inch caddy. Then I did some screwing and unscrewing. I found out that I could only screw the top and the bottom-right screw in, if the bottom left screw was mixed with another one it didn't post. My guess is that the caddy pushed down hard on the adaptor and since the mount is a bit wonky, it pushed it down hard and the metal of the caddy or something else might have touched the motherboard. Causing a kind of short. With the left screw out, it worked like a charm. I also confirmed this by pushing the caddy with the 2 other screws in manually, and then when it was already on it worked. When it rebooted it didn't post, when it rebooted again it sometimes worked and sometimes needed a hard reset. Other than that, the pc works like a charm. This is just something I noticed with mine that I didn't notice with the G1. Maybe it's because of the design and the screws. But the pc works flawlessly without the heatsink!
That pad is most likely getting in the way due to the tight space.
Is there a difference between the screws that hold the drive to the caddy for the different generations of the minis or are they all the same??? My G4 came with a caddy but no screws for the drive itself...
I think I talk about screws in my caddy video but I went and checked my G2, G3, G4 to confirm. The G2 screws are much longer and can't be used on G3/G4 - the G3/G4/G5 screws are all interchangeable - including the caddy and SATA cable screws.
@@handmedowntech I understand what you said in your video about the screws that hold the caddy to the motherboard and the screws that hold the cable... I was wondering about the screws that go into the drive itself and align the drive in the caddy???
@bjshertenlieb gotcha. The ones for the G2 seem to be different than the G3, G4 ones. To be honest I tend to just use a simple screw to hold the drive in place since I moved the SSDs around from unit to unit. Those damping screws are really only useful for mechanical drives. The lightweight SSDs can really just be held in with a single screw.
@@handmedowntech Thank you for your quick answers... Appreciate it muchly!!!
I have elitedesk 800 g4 but the problem is that it's not powering on anymore don't know how to fix the power up problem anymore done replacing cmos battery
Maybe try taking out the memory to see if you get any beeps. Also have you tried turning it on with the cover off to I sure the switch on the case isn't broken?
I absolutely did NOT see which header you plugged into. I just got a 705-G4, which is working great for Linux distro testing. It has three DisplayPorts, which is two too many, so I just ordered a USB-C just like yours, but the headers on my motherboard look very different. Now I'm doubtful of it working.
@@inappropriatejohnson I checked on eBay to look at the 705 mobo and it does not have that extra header. If you purchased the power delivery Flexio I show in the video then it only works with the 800 35w. There is a USB c that should work with all models but it does not have the power delivery. It is just a straight Flexio board. 3tk78aa is the part number but try looking for L33162-001 or just Flexio USB c. Just make sure it does not have the header and cable.
@@handmedowntech Thanks for responding.......maybe it'll work on the Lenovo mini I have coming. $8 bucks plus tax ain't too bad of a fail. I'm addicted to these as pure Linux machines.
Which Lenovo?
@@handmedowntech Think Center M710q, i5-7500T, and the exact configuration of dp/hdmi/usb-c ports is uncertain, but the one pictured show three DisplayPorts. $55 bucks is pretty good deal either way I think. Thank you once again.

Hi - I've successfully installed 24H2 using your instructions. For any future version upgrades beyond 24H2, is it likely that I'll need to download the relevant ISO file?
You should get the monthly updates but most likely you'll need to do the ISO update for the major updates.
@@handmedowntech Ok thanks.
Cool project. I like your gumption. Also, SSD caddies are totally overrated and interfere with proper cooling.
Thank you for tuning in. I guess I'm a fan of any sort of storage. Although my experience with mechanical drives in the units shows just how slow they are in comparison to M.2 and SSDs. But even mechanical have their place.
Which gpu you can put in this?
You can see it here. www.ebay.com/itm/235826816486. I tried getting it to work once but must have had a bum unit since windows couldn't see it. Other folks seemed to already have the card in their unit and most of those tended to be the G4 705
Is it worth to upgrade BIOS? My unit has Q21 Ver. 02.10.00. PS: I would like to thank you for video guide about how to setup Intel AMT. Everything works perfectly :)
@@technodrome624 My G4 shows Q21 ver 02.29.01. I'd suggest doing the update. Preferably via the BIOS menu. Glad the vpro worked out
@@handmedowntech Thanks for the advice, updated. However I am facing rather bizarre issue. I am using OEM SATA drive. Basically on one partition is Windows and on second I installed debian. However, when I want to boot I receive the error e1000e reset blocked by me and the system just hangs on blank screen. Ever had similar issue?
The screws that hold the FlexIO card "usually" fits, to hold an NVME drive. Stealing a single screw should be fine.
The 2280s are pretty straightforward, it's those 2230s that are a challenge. Not sure why HP made it so hard since they did it correctly for the G3.
@@handmedowntech A mystery for the ages. All the vendors are like this. What should have been changing out a chipset chip, ends up with meddling in each generation. Just look at the caddies between 3rd and 4 gen. removing the third screw, good. Now having to line up two zero tolarance slots to the caddy, bad. So its not really an improvement. Yet needs a different chassis, caddy and heatsink. Just for two little slots a few mm long. I have a random machine that has hole markings for up to 110mm NVME drives. yet only the 80mm has a hole. No traces go through the other marking holes, so could have been drilled out. Someone had to layout components to fit a huge 110mm drive. But only drilling an 80mm is just daft.
@Yandarval now that sounds like someone was planning for a fancier version that could use the 110 but that fell through or else after building it they found the demand for 110 was low? I wouldn't be surprised if there is a funky adapter that fits in the 80 slot but will hold the 110.
Thanks for the video, I just got a g4 dirt cheap as barebones. I managed to snipe a G6 and the G4 barebones for about $10 each. Neither came with a CPU, but I had an 8500T not being used, and knew where to get a 10100T for $40, so it seemed like a no brainer. Once they arrived the G6 was fine, but the G4 didn't come with the Heatsing or fan, fortunately I found them on Ebay for $12. I am going to be using it for a fairly specific use, so a 128GB NVME will be plenty, and found one on Amazon for $11, if I didn't have the 8500T already it would be an issue of it being cheaper to buy a complete one, especially if I had to pay more for the heatsink, I got lucky mine was buy it now for about what most sellers wanted for each piece, that could have turned out badly. The G6 on the otherhand was only missing the CPU and RAM, it wasn't listed but came with a 1TB NVME from its former life in corporate America, I reset windows, no worries there, the G4 was also missing its wifi card, the antennas and wiring is there, so I probably have an M.2 wifi card that will work with it.
Had the experience of getting a barebones G4 but at least it had the heatsink, etc. - I then realized I still needed to buy the CPU and didn't research it earlier since I was used to buying 6500T - bit of a sticker shock seeing the prices for the 8500T. Hoping those will come down in the coming years.
Also looking at getting my mum sister and brother and son and daughter one then making custom images for all of them then setting up a server to hold the images then I can restore the pc remotely if I ever need to
So if things go south with the units you can restore to a new one or refresh the current one?
@@handmedowntech refresh I think make my own custom image for each unit
I have the elite desk 800 g2 mini g5 mini lenovo m720q and love them now looking at 2 elitedesk 800 g6 mini I did see one that was bios locked for £75 and thought why not but it sold I did see new boards for £35 just holding of for the right price
The issue with G6 BIOS locked is that there is not the usual jumpers you can set to clear it. You literally have to get a new mobo from HP. Do a search about G6 BIOS locked and see the poor folks trying to get service under warranty.
i have a few computers like this that i havent gotten rid of yet. do you want them? what do you do after you collect so many? they just sit on a shelf for me. my uncle used to be in the repair business but i got his old stuff. can i email your account or something?
Thank you for the offer but my shelves are pretty full too. I've collected so many so I have content for the channel and viewer inquiries. I'd suggest donating good working units to places like Goodwill. Many of those resell them through eBay, thus cutting down on ewaste.
I can’t seem to get this to recognize in OPNsense. Any suggestions?
Have you confirmed that the network card is seen by the unit? I would connect the network cable to the second port and then try doing a BIOS upgrade via the BIOS itself. This will cause it to talk to HP. If it can't connect it could be an issue with the card. Or of course if you can boot to windows even better. You can then confirm the card and also confirm that it is Intel and not Realtek.
@handmedowntech Appreciate the response. It was in the BIOS, but OPNsense refused to see it. Luckily, I bought four of these NICs. I swapped it with a different one and it’s working now. Must’ve been a bad card.
@gm4765 Good to know it does with opnsense and that you had extras. I wish I'd ordered more of those when it got them real cheap.
Well, I tried to install 24H2 but it gives me safe-os phase with an error during boot operation 0xC1900101 - 0x20017...Reading about it suggests it is either a driver issue or windows update issue...So I disabled WIFI, Bluetooth, and modem in bios...I took out my DVD drive too...Still the same error...Found a video about ways to fix the error: sfc, dism, delete software distribution downloads folder...Nothing worked...Which is interesting because I did a fresh install Windows 11 23H2 which is compatible with duo core CPUs...I checked Windows Updates, and it will not install an update because supposedly other updates are needed or something...Ran the Windows Updates troubleshooter and it kept giving me some error too...Further Googling said to run troubleshooter in safe mode with networking...I did but next troubleshooter says it can't download the fix in safe mode, like WTF??? So, I do not know at this point if it is 23H2 that is preventing 24H2 from installing or whether my bios and CPU are preventing 24H2 from installing...So I am going to try one last ditch effort and reset Windows and check the status of Windows Updates before it even downloads any updates...But it makes no sense, why would Windows 11 23H2 have windows updates corruption on a fresh install...
Hi man! I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, and they're awesome! Do you know if the heatsink of a G2 Mini 65W (which is also copper), fits on the G3 Mini 35W? They look nearly identical.
Unfortunately not - the holes are just off enough so that they are not compatible.

@@rishilmhatre5500 I'll have to see if there are software solutions for the overclock8ng since the BIOS doesn't support it
@14:24... i think you have some kind of m.2 slot in the right top corner...
That section of the video looks like I'm adding it to a G1. The only M.2vwould be under that large aluminum shield once you also remove the fan. So for the G1 it is easier doing the wifi hack.
Boy, you are magic about releasing videos just ahead of when I need the information. My project to replace 15 windows clients will best be done by cloning drives.... Merry Christmas!
@zincfive That is a thankless job. If it works people don't notice. But if it fails, oh boy.
@@handmedowntech Yep. I guess I have a little advantage today cause I'm the boss and a little disadvantage cause I suffered through the early days, and can't help trying to see if the modern tools work better than they did 25 years ago.
I think the first time I tried cloning disks to refresh clients was still in the Netbeui Boot Disk era. Still solidly in the booting from DOS era, definitely before Windows for Workgroups 3.11, which was the first actual windows, a number of years before Win 95, which actually worked. 10 years before "broadband- alway on" I'd say 1990 to 1992. It was a computer training lab, where paying students would "learn" word, excel skills to "get a better job..." They needed to refresh the computers (I figure 386 compaq ibm pc clones) for the software they were teaching. Even then they were worried about shitheads leaving viruses and whatnot, and they only had tiny hard drives if any, and we were booting to DOS, then loading "Windows" on top.
We used Ghost (later Norton Ghost, Later Symantec Ghost... basically exactly the same as clonezilla.) But first we had to get a "network" together, get the "slaves" speaking with a "master" which was the unholy 'Netbeui Boot Disk," booting from a Dos 6 disk with "Netbeui" to recognize some peer computer over whatever ungodly Novel or IBM token ring peer network they cobbled together. All this is before there were ethernet or IP addresses and whatnot.
We got it to work, at least enough to get paid, but if we got paid for 50 hours of work, it took us maybe 500 (I'll never live long enough to be repaid for the many, many lost nights), and I'd bet a paycheck that it didn't operate for 6 months. Shortly after, there was Windows for Workgroups 3.11, which actually sort-of worked to make peer networks, and a few years later windows 95 which actually DID work.
You mileage may vary. Sometimes after you clone from SATA to NVME and try to boot from NVME you get a blue screen. The solution is to wait until you get the recovery options and then choose to boot into safe mode. Then after you boot into safe mode, boot back into normal mode and it should boot from NVME no problem.
@@ytguy2010 Agreed. I've had more luck with booting SSDs so I was pleased it worked on the first try. I think having the same sized drives is key.
I have been looking in to different recovery options for the g5 mini I can clean install windows 10 or 11 or download the recovery image from hp using there software or use sure recover that will do it from the cloud or if you make your own image you can link the image to the sure recovery in the bios and it will restore that image loads of options
@@stevenbell9589 I've played with trying to do windows drive mirroring but setting up the recovery partition was always tricky and I never seemed to get it right.
@handmedowntech using sure recovery sorts all that but puts windows 10 on it
Merry Christmas!
And a Merry Christmas to you. Hoping for RAM under your tree. Thanks!
Very fortunate that your G3 can boot from the NVMe m.2 slot, making it a relatively seamless transition. I had looked into upgrading my ProDesk 600 G2 but all signs point to that generation only bootable from the SATA 2.5" drive. Btw, SSD manufacturers will usually include a free vendor-locked copy of a disk imaging program like Macrium Reflect or MiniTool Partition Wizard so that you can clone your existing disk to your new SSD directly from within Windows. Merry Christmas!
@@alansmithee.01Feliz Navidad! I'll have to try booting from M.2 on the EliteDesk 800 G2 to see if it has the same issue. I haven't been as successful with the cloning inside of Windows vs outside and clonezilla.

The port you installed supports up to 60w power in as well so you can plug the whole PC into a dock or use a USB-C power supply. The 65w version of the elitedesk 800 g4 can use the other version of the flexio card that doesn't have power in (HP part no. 3TK78AA)
I keep thinking of buying one of those wall chargers that can output 60w to see it in action. Even cooler might be a charging bank that does the same. So you can have a portable mini.
It is known that Windows 11 installs fine on tpm 1.2 just like it was 2.0 in 3-4th gen intel cpus. it's just that MS does not admit it.
@@Romerco77 one of the reasons I did the follow up on doing upgrades.
Great step by step guide! On my ED 800 G2 I did have to enable the TPM in BIOS before upgrading from 1.2 ro 2.0. Finding that enable option in the BIOS was the hardest part of this guide. THANKS
I'd agree, the different units use interesting terms for it and it's not always obvious where to find it.
I found your channel as I was having an issue on an elite desk 800 mini with not displaying except out of vga. Would you be down for a phone call? I can pay you. Thanks
Thanks for the offer but I'd prefer to keep it in the forums so that others can benefit. Which model are we talking about? Generally if the displayport is not showing video its because the unit is defaulting to VGA since it didn't have a signal on the DP. I find it best to switch the monitor to Display port and right away turn on the computer so that it sees a connection on the DP (I actually use a DP to HDMI adapter and HDMI on my monitor bu the same concept applies).

I m running a i5-8400 (non T) in a EliteDesk 800 G4 mini 35w with a 90w power supply. It works ok, but i m having some doubts that it works at its best. (Turbo Boost is enabled in BIOS) Cinebench R23 gives a 2700pts score where as on my EliteDesk 800 G4 Tower (also i5-8400 non T) gives a score of 5500pst. Do you think that it is possible that the 35w throttles down the CPU ? Also i m hearing some high pitch coil sounds form the CPU ( is guess) when on load. (sounds like an old HDD)
Compare the thermals between the units. I wonder if the 35w is getting too hot. Maybe also try with the cover off to see if it makes a difference. If it works better you might look into getting the vented hood from a 65w unit.
@@handmedowntech Thermals look normal with a max of 70 degrees C. I have tried with and withouth cover and same results. The interesting thing is that my G4 has vented top cover and copper (not aluminium) radiator for the cooler.
The G4 is an interesting one in that there is a difference between the 65w and 35w mobos. The 35w has an extra header for use with the USB c Flexio card. I wonder if HP did anything else to make them unique, like use of CPU. Can you try geekbench on the two units? I found it to be less GPU intensive vs the other benchmark. I can get you the numbers I have for various units and CPUs.
@@handmedowntech here are my scores: GeekBench 6 G4 MINI 35w | SingleC 1020 | MultiC 4213 - Turbo Boost OFF G4 TWR | SingleC 1003 | MultiC 3555 - Turbo Boost OFF G4 MINI 35w | SingleC 1416 | MultiC 2693 - Turbo Boost ON G4 TWR | SingleC 1364 | MultiC 4146 - Turbo Boost ON Cinebench R23 G4 MINI 35w | SingleC 731 | MultiC 4115 - Turbo Boost OFF G4 TWR | SingleC 742 | MultiC 4126 - Turbo Boost OFF G4 MINI 35w | SingleC 1031 | MultiC 1940 - Turbo Boost ON G4 TWR | SingleC 1034 | MultiC 5491 - Turbo Boost ON * Turbo Boost turned OFF prevents coil whine sound (i did not hear it so far) * also power plan set to "Power Saving" prevent coil whine sound (but maybe then you loose CPU power, i did tests only with High Performance power plan) *G4 Twr has only 8Gb RAM 2400hz as compared to G4 MINI that has 16Gb RAM 2400Mhz, maybe this influences the score a bit *on thing i notice is that there is no fan speed sensor shown (HW Info 64) not even in the G4 Tower. I was curious about fan speed since it felt like it makes louder noise with disabled turbo boost. Conclusion for the MINI: turbo boost ON produce coil whine sound and produce LOWER Multi Core scores. And i would have love it to be the other way around :).

I just purchased one of these. It was failing to recognize the Hdd I mounted. Thanks to your video I found the sata cable had come loose. Finicky little socket. Keep on doing what your doing.
Thank you for watching and the nice comment. Glad it helped you.
Do a clean install has worked for me with no edits to anything on TPM 1.2 and I5-6400T. It is only the upgrade where this happens from whatI understand.
Correct. In my prior video I did a fresh install without issue but folks asked for a video showing an upgrade.
For me it really depends. I picked up a barebones prodesk 600 g6 for $10, and a 10500t for $50, ddr4 sodimms are very cheap, 2 8gb sticks for about $10, and a new 512gb NVME for $27, came with the WIFI bits in it. The cheapest complete units had 8gb and 256gb at $125 (still a bargain). On the other hand I recently bought an Elitedesk 705 G3 with 8gb and no storage for $22 shipped. I dont worry too much about the storage, so many companies remove and destroy storage before surplusing the systems out, and on these mini systems seem to really skimp on storage anyway, that I don't mind providing it myself, a 256GB nvme is fairly easy to find for $15-18, and the Windows Key is typically stored on the MB. The cost of the CPUs varies so much that if you go with the build it option you may need patience, and have to really shop, I have seem it where the cheapest 8400t is $50, but there are 8500t's available for $35. The same applies to i7, often they are about the same price as an i3, other times they are way more expensive. If you are building the 65w version is a must, as it allows the use of non T CPUs, non T 6-8th gen often sell very cheap, I have bought 8th Gen I5 8500 cpus for as little as $25. I am not a fan of the i7s in mini pcs, even in the 65w chassis heat is a problem and they will often thermal throttle, the same applies to the larger SFF machines, the cooling just isn't very good.
I'm in agreement on the CPU cost. The barebone has to be really cheap to make it worthwhile. I bought a barebones G4 and then realized I had to spend another 50 to 60 for the CPU and I could almost have gotten a working unit for the same cost and less risk.
These little things have become my current fascination, the combination of being so readily available, easy to store and inexpensive has me hooked. I have found your collection of videos on them to be invaluable. So far my biggest issue was an HP MP9 that came with no storage, but had a caddy but no sata cable, and the sata connector on the MB was damaged, I took me a couple of hours to figure out that it would detect NVME drives but not M.2 SATA drives.@@handmedowntech
Which MP9 do you have? I'm sure you watched my video on the MP9 G4 I picked up. Thanks for tuning in.
@@handmedowntech I have the G3
I was going to suggest getting a new SATA cable but if the actual connector on the board is damaged that won't work. Still a nice unit and you could always use the Wifi to M2 adapter to get a second drive - albeit a bit slower.
Would rather go to Apple (have one standing by) and Linux for my current CPU. 2025 I leave Windows. From what I've read 11 is not user friendly and is spyware. I always read the comments first and research. No Thanks.
You've been able to get Apple OS to run on the minis?
Of course if the CPU doesn't support SSE4.2 that's a deal breaker as you can't get round that requirement.
Where with Linux you're ok
@@handmedowntech but shifting to Linnux is not a viable alternative for many non-technical users. Linux doesn't cure all ills, much as the Linux proponents would have you believe otherwise. For instance how do you transfer a decade or more of carefully catalogued and filed Outlook messages, rules and contacts to a Linux client? Even running Outlook under Wine isn't a consistently reliable solution.
@grahamepigney8565 very true. Majority of folks are used to Windows. Which also means that they have to use the older Windows OS if they have real old hardware. Thankfully the hardware we feature on the channel is just new enough to run windows 11.
well done, I had noticed a few of my vm's (unraid) were sitting at 22H2 with 'Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date" in the Windows Update . I thinking was to just rebuild, but then I watched your video today and was like why not... I was lucky to have TPM2 so I just followed your instructions, it was a simple upgrade. No issues, sometimes the simple way is the way!. Cheers.
I'm sure much faster than my bare metal upgrade too.
open a terminal as Administrator, change to the win 11 folder and run "setup.exe / product server" that did it for me on a HP EliteBook 840 G1 with a i7-4600u, no registry hacks needed. Runs as nice a Win10 on this machine and updates come in so far...
I will have to give that a try. Thanks
Man ... what a timely video. I was about to raise this exact issue regarding my G3 i5-7500 (Win11 Pro 22H2). Just followed your clear instructions and successfully updated to 24H2. Many thanks! I have new RAM (2x16GB) and 2TB SSD on order. I plan to clone my freshly updated OS to the new system. A couple of unrelated issues: 1. I would like to use my G3 as a mirror backup of my main Dell XPS15 laptop (which runs only Win11-Home 23H2). Ideally, I would like to clone everything EXCEPT the OS (i.e. software + data) to the G3. But I suppose this is not possible? Can you confirm that -- at best -- I could clone the partitions containing my data, and then reinstall some software (and perhaps some desktop directories) manually on the G3? Or could you suggest another approach to get closer to a replica of my main laptop (apart from the OS)? 2. For now, my G3 shares one of my Dell monitors using a DP cable (while the XPS is connected to the same monitor via HDMI). Most of the time, my G3 is completely shut down and is not using the monitor (while it is being used by the XPS). But sometimes I notice that the light on front of the G3 is flashing and the unit is operating without my knowledge. It seems as though the G3 is awaking from a complete shut down when the monitor it is connected to (via DP) is servicing the XPS (via HDMI). I've heard of computers waking up from sleep or hibernation upon mouse movement, but not from complete shutdown state. Any idea of what might be happening?
Well first off, we pretty much have the same unit so it gives me hope that I'll be able to upgrade. As far as the cloning. Check out my video on virtualizing an old desktop. It gives you the ability to go back and run software you might not need all the time. Granted you'll still need to copy your data to your new machine. In my case we keep most of our data on our NAS so it was already there for us to connect to. You then would also need to reinstall any apps you truly need. Not quite what you were looking for but an option so you can retire or reuse that Dell.
Thanks for video. I'd like to ask you whether the G3 G4 -T devices are noisy or not for using as a home server. And if it's yes then what kind of noise is.
I have my G4 running 247, as well as two G1s. I have them right next to me when filming. No noise issues.
Hello. Did you ask for a G6 for Christmas ? I can't wait to watch videos about the new generations on your channel (comparison with the old generations, thinks HP improved (or not), ...)
Oh shoot. I already sent my letter and asked for boring stuff like socks and good coffee. Maybe he'll leave me a stocking of cash. I'll look for some G6 deals.
@@handmedowntech I hope so. There are starting to be some good deals on G6s. I just bought an HP Prodesk 400 mini G6 (i3-10110T / 8GB / 256GB / W11PRO + keyboard & mouse) for 100€ (~US$100) and it works perfectly.I hope you find a deal.
I went on eBay and the G6 must be a bit cheaper across the pond. Most of the decent ones started at $200.
@@handmedowntech Yes, I had a great deal. I just need to replace the CPU fan which works but it a quite noisy. At the moment, I can see on eBay US a 600 mini G6 (i5 / 16 Go / No SSD) priced at $148. Prices will start to fall. But there is a big price difference between the G6 and the G5 and I don't know if it is justified. I think the differences are more interesting between a G6 and a G9 (for example DD4 faster on the 260/400 or DDR5 vs DDR4 on the 600/800) than between a G5 and a G6. I hope will will corfirm this soon.
Some versions of Ventoy also automatically bypass the Windows 11 installation restrictions, read/check the Global Control Plugin / VentoyPlugson section for that.
Windows 11 24H2 and previous versions will install without complaining about your hardware when TPM 1.2 and secure boot is available (implies also UEFI/GPT) and ANY CPU if you do a clean install from the original unmodified ISO. Works here with a Latitude E6530 and 2430M CPU. But if you try upgrading to other versions XXHX it gives the usual complaints.
I'm actually in the middle of trying that myself. Hope to show upgrading from 23H2 to 24.
Thank you 👍🏻✅
Very welcome
The hard truth which most vlogers avoid to discuss how one can install 24H2 on a unsupported hardware which don't even TPM at all or SSE2 That is where 24H2 sucks in and cannot go pass beyond reboot All are installing 24H2 where most of requirements are already there. I am trying to install on a real unsupported hardware but every time cannot pass boot and death of a blue screen greets me. One can easily install on from Intel 6Th gen which is almost 6 Yr old hardware.
Dumb question. I'm assuming windows 11 before 24H2 works?
windows 11 iot enterprise is also a good option for old computer
Thanx for the video. Yesterday I wend back to 23H2 on my non supported PC as things were not going right. Worst thing I discovered was that Google Drive on two of my accounts had not been syncing since the update.
Makes me want to stay where I am on my G3. How did you backup and restore your PC?
The definitive MS position has been updated as of a few days ago (actually a disclaimer on Dec 12), it's not great news, they are doubling down on all the requirements. Google "Windows 11 on devices that don't meet minimum system requirements" for links and whatnot. To my ear, they are saying at some point they will shut down the ability to use older machines altogether, and their official stance is to roll back win 10. I doubt they will roll back the most difficult requirement, (the newest, nastiest one:) sse4.2/popcnt. The other requirements can be avoided, at least for now, but sse4.2 is probably hopeless. I can't even get the PE environment to boot on sse4.1.
They seem to be stuck between trying to get people off win 10 but also making it easier to support win 11 by limiting who can run it.
@@handmedowntech Yep, I agree. I figure they feel that leading at AI is existential in their mind. They are sorely caught between maintaining the largest user base in history against progress with their copilot+ spec, which includes the latest processor extensions and NPU's. They are somewhat f'd.
It's either the future or the past...I guess they are thinking offering a "you can get around much of it" plus, "stay with win 10 and here's another 12 months of support for 30 bux" might postpone their pain, they can skate through it make it a problem for "future microsoft." For me, it's a question of what I get from hosting an AI system on my desk. Without a "killer app" AI is stupid. We are already seeing so called "ai" in search, which mostly misunderstands your questions with answers that are based on press releases, but can't provide any sort of quality critical reasoning. The whole reason we are here, discussing this in a chat session is because AI answers to our questions are mostly regurgitated marketing nonsense.
So far, all the "make a image or video of this weird idea" and "make a program for me" or "write my essay for me" and all the chat stuff is best done online, with monstrously huge data sets, and frankly will only ever be limitedly "intelligent" because the people who ask these questions are mostly going to be unable to handle actual truth, which is that their walnut brains are looking for speedy self-affirmation, not actual enlightenment, and answers like "well it's complicated, settle in and we'll discuss it" aren't very popular.
The best I've seen from desktop AI is your machine will take a screenshot of what you are doing every 10 seconds, then use "ai" to image search to figure out what you were doing, so you can use a natural language search to ask "what was that awesome brand of dildo I was looking at a few months ago? TAKE ME THERE..." You know like Google maps for sex-toy shopping...
