I did exactly what you recommended, and at your shop. Visited, chatted, had an idea what I wanted. My wife then took over, chose the suit and after fitting and tailoring it is perfect.

Very interesting! Your suit is fantastic! I think a made to measure suit is a wonderful thing to have. Not so easy to get in the area I live in. Unfortunately, attire has become more and more casual which I don't really like, although it has its place. I'm just glad to see shops like yours still exist in this age of casual. I know there are some of us who still like to dress well!

Great advice. I remember in my more youthful years, getting similar advice. 'Find a good tailor' I was told, and tell them you're putting yourself in their hands, and if they look after you, they will get all your business, plus hearty recommendations. So, I went to this old fashioned tailor. The man had the personality of a dish towel, wanted to expend minimum effort, and just get your orders, and repeatedly tried to dump his old stock onto me, even though it made me look like Coco the Clown. He lost a beautiful arrangement.

I know this was about tailoring but I think it is equally important for all items of clothing and shoes. You don’t want someone who only wants to sell you stuff whether it suits you or matches your lifestyle - you really need someone who tells what you might not want to hear - but ought to hear.
I’m over weight and have been for the last 10 years. When I was playing rugby (last match as 1st team prop at 52), I was very fit and with little fat. Then things like heart ache, cracked vertebrae, crumbling spine determined that I could not exercise. I suppose that, to equalise input and output of calories, I could eat just celery day in and day out but, as far as I know, I’ve only got this life and so I eat sensibly but don’t deny myself everything. That means the kilos rise. Obviously, this has an effect on your wardrobe and what suits a man of 70 with a girth. I rely upon my trailer and outfitter to advise me as what suits me.
So, get someone or a shop that you can trust and build up a relationship. Unfortunately, the shifting of fashions (I had a day in London today and there were only 2 other people I saw who were wearing a tie) plus disposable trends, means that local outfitters need our custom.

To wear on their own or with a sports coat… yes if they were plain fabric such as grey or navy and only need minor alteration. Striped trousers and other fancies can look ‘like the bottom half of a suit’🤝🤝

Well, as someone who is wearing a suit pretty much every time he leaves the house and therefore being used to it for a few years though not yet having a single bespoke or well just not of the rack suit I personally am probably going to go for a pretty extreme suit when going to a tailor just because it’s a suit I’m talking about a double breasted very huge peak lapel shark striped dark brown wool suit that you won’t get anywhere else and I just wouldn’t as long as I know I’m only going to have one or two tailored suits in the next years I think I wouldn’t go to a tailor and then get something made that I also can just buy the rack especially as I’m someone whom the majority of good of the rack suits I personally buy pretty much all of my of the rack suits at Hawes And Curtis fit very well so when I wanna go to a tailor, I want to have something I cannot get anywhere else well not anywhere of the rack that means
