It’s so funny how working with Typo can be such a coin flip. One video she’s looking like a well trained sheep dog, the next you call her to round up sheep and she just takes off into the distance with no telling of where she’s going or when she’ll be back. She’s still a good girl but she’s lucky she’s cute when she pulls stunts like that 😂
Is there a video on her backstory? Like when/how you two met and how you got her trained up? Need more Slug in my life, she’s such a character.

I swear! I find people with a great vast knowledge know that sometimes only a cuss word will do. They have done studies that cursing and swearing are signs of intelligence. In the case of the people who have told me to stop using foul language, I do know I am way more intelligent than they are... both emotionally and intellectually. I also find that people who work and are raised on farms are more intelligent as well. My Dad was a farm kid and he went from a very tiny town to working in Nigeria in the oil industry and he even has a patent for one of his inventions. So please keep cussing, I find it refreshingly real and authentic. I enjoy all your videos especially the ones with colorful language. Life is too short to be put into a box with the bland language people! 😂

Love your videos. Merinos are pretty common in New Zealand too. Typo's speed is impressive. Even before he injured his back, my Chihuahua mix could never go that fast though our family Chihuahuas were pretty fast. Our family Corgi was slow. Had a friend who used a Corgi as a sheepdog. Apparently he'd take half an hour to get down to the paddocks to work the sheep but was ready and willing to go immediately but the big dogs would run down in ten minutes and then have to recover. His stamina was so much greater. He'd give the farmer dirty looks if he got stuck in the sheep pens overnight though. He was the only one who couldn't jump the fences.

Interestingly talking about swear words related to holy ones, in Quebecois Canada they have what are called “sacres” which are just the Canadian French words for things like tabernacle, baptism, sacraments…stuff like that. But said out of context, you can string them together in certain orders and they function as different curses. It’s quite fascinating

Having lived in Texas for 2 years and being stationed right next to one of the largest sheep ranches in Texas, I got the impression that Texas was sheep and not cattle country - at least in the early 1980s when the Air Force had me in Del Rio, Texas. The ranch was also used to film the TV series "Lonesome Dove" - which featured a cattle farm in the series. I guess they trucked in the cows for those scenes.
The "range" in that area near the Rio Grande River was what I would refer to as scrub. Some mesquite bush, and little or no grass that I could see. That meant using mesquite charcoal to grill livestock grown in the area would be redundant. I'm not sure what breeds they were raising then.
The Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association lists 11 breeds currently, including Delaine-Merino sheep.
Merino were the first breed introduced to Oregon in the early 1800s. Oregon became a state in 1859. Most of the Oregon sheep operations are only running around 100 sheep. I usually see them pastured on what looks like grass to me, but they do a lot of clean up on just harvested crops like corn stubble. I worked at one cannery that had a flock or two in the surrounding fields.
I would bicycle to work and occasionally one would get loose from the pasture, so I learned they didn't smell all that fine from those encounters. I wasn't paying attention enough to tell a ewe from otherwise - I was too busy pedaling like crazy to get away from them.

My family came from NYC & swearing has always been part of our normal conversations, so not offended at all by your cussing, I find it quite colorful & adds to the dialog!
Btw…as a new viewer, I just can’t resist sharing this. I’m sure others have noticed, but you seriously look like you could be Nicole Kidman’s sister/cousin!
Which totally adds to your sassy attitude 😊

Annnd here's a third old lady, native Californian, who swears as much and maybe more👍 I grew up on a ranch and my first memory is of watching my uncle, his cousin, and some hands shearing sheep while one of the rams butting me through the fence so hard i flew. My dad learned to count from the Basques who herded the sheep on the bigger ranches. My cousins still farm and would be 5th generation. We ran merinos until they were phased out around the 70s there abouts. Anyhooo I think you and Slug are fantastic. The drone and back of the truck shots are great. What beautiful country you drive through and I do appreciate the non sanitized vlogging you do, broken down fencing, dirty barns, rattle heaps for driving and thrashed clothes for working. Yellowstone is fun and pretty, have to say the human interaction is dead on but it's too clean everywhere to be real.

Tara, thank you for all of the education on Australia (between you and We Got the Chocolates I’ve learned a ton) and about sheep farming. It is really interesting.
To be honest, I realized I didn’t know anything at all about it when I went to get a wool garment cleaned a while back. It is a mix of non-dyed “white” wool and black…and I was concerned the cleaning would hurt the black b/c I assumed it was died. The dry cleaners looked at me like I had two heads and were like “uh no, this is black wool….from black sheep. Man I felt stupid; of course I’d heard the expression of like being a black sheep but I guess it just never crossed my mind that they made black wool from them. Seeing the black lamb in ones of your videos made me think about that and laugh a lot at my ignorance.

In Sweden we have this fun little sheep breed, it grows faster and it CHEDS its wool like a dog, so you don't really need to sheer them. Now it's obviously a meat sheep and not wool, but random fun little fact!

Hi Tara, i don't hear you swearing, it just everyday Aussie lingo. Another big day moving stock to be drenching, vaccinating and sorting out the lambs. The weather has been strange, one day it's hot and the next it rains but still warm. Not typical summer weather. The grass seems to hanging on with all the rain we have had and the dam have lots of water. Any different plans for you in 2024 or just the same old routine as usual. Chris from Bendigo, Victoria.

We have none. No snow yet this winter. Rains a bit every day and my grass is starting to die. But no snow. So it's not just you over there that's wierd this year. Good luck

We do have merinos in other countries! Though when I think of merinos, I do think of Australia and New Zealand, especially the polled ones. It's really interesting to see how you guys manage your sheep! I'm from the UK and because we are a tiny little island, land is *really* expensive over here so we can't move sheep around paddocks so much so we don't tend to be moving them so far as you do apart from maybe if you are keeping sheep on the hills - very interesting to see the ways we do things differently!

I've been watching Outer Range on Amazon, and admittedly it is a supernatural/scifi drama set on a cattle ranch. But having been watching Tara for a few months now, I couldnt help but notice that beside a bit of fencing, there was very little actual farming work done. Plenty of time to brood over a beer in town in the middle of the day, though.
The big burst of energy was when the whole family had to saddle up their horses (!) and move their 30-40 cows from one paddock to another. One dog but I think it was more there for the exercise then doing any work. Good excuse for Josh Brolin to show off his "cowboying" skills. Lots of ATVs and horses in use. No RAVs or cattle dogs.
I enjoyed it, but missed seeing actual ranch life.
