This is not a review of a specific camera model. This is a video about not needing the latest and greatest gear. You hear me say it over and over, "Gear doesn't matter!". Any old camera will do the job as long as YOU know how to do the job.
And yes, I paid even less for my full frame Canon 5D and Sigma DP1. But that's not the point. The difference between those cameras, this and all the others Ive tested is rather negligible. All of them can deliver nice looking images. The rest is up to me.
But the main point is for people contacting me after every cheap camera review I make, complaining that they can't find one. When in fact.. what for it... it doesn't matter. The point of my old camera reviews and 5 reasons videos is to show that they are all good. You can't go wrong. This camera is the oldest "amateur" camera they ever made.
So if you can't find one, buy what you can find. If its made in the last 20 years you will be fine.

I bought 7 of these for $75 to give to students in my photography class, and they loved them and kept coming back with great photos. It's a great example of enthusiasm being more important than the gear you use.

this brought me back. This was my first DSLR and my second SLR. I remember using a russian firmware to unlock some of features that the 10D had. And CF cards were so expensive back then, I remember there was an mp3 player at the time that used a 4GB CF hard drive that sold for less than the hard drive itself. People bought that (me included) just to take it apart and use the CF card inside for their cameras.
Camera does not matter, you made a video on the Olympus EP1 I bought the EPL6 with a 45mm. You made a video on the Stylus 1, I have the chance to find one, you recommend the XE2 with the Minolta 50 mm, I find the Xe1 with the viltrox 85mm. And you are right we have to buy the one available in our locality. The only thing I buy on ebay is the Panasonic CM1. As I live in New Caledonia, shipping is expensive, so buy locally what is available is a smart way to satisfy my passion of photography. Thanks for this super great video
The main point of this video is for people contacting me after every cheap camera review I make, complaining that they can't find one. When in fact.. wait for it... it doesn't matter. This camera is the oldest "amateur" camera they ever made!
So if you can't find one, buy what you can find. If its made in the last 20 years you will be fine.
I recently bought myself a 5D. The original. Classic, as many call it. One of the earliest, and probably the cheapest full frame out there. For all the videos people do on them, the prices always ever keep going down. If a camera as well loved as the 5D can be affordable, there's definitely going to be a lot of cameras far newer, with far better features going even cheaper. For sure.
Mattias’s point that a camera is a tool and a 20 year old ‘hammer’ does the same exact thing as a 2021 ‘hammer’ but maybe less bells and whistles is the point of this video. Extra dressings on cost, on prices, on new do-hickeys and complications, all that is for the person to figure out. This video shows that you can buy an ‘outdated spec’ camera and still blow yourself and others away. A tool is a tool. Whether it is old enough to drive or not
Agreed! If you hunt Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, estate sales you'll eventually find that great deal. I think we've become accustomed to too much instant gratification. I have the Fuji Finepix S2 Pro, it takes great images with it's Super CCD 6MP Sensor, yeah it struggle's above 400 ISO and with highlights blowing out, but I find the challenge fun! For $30 and my existing Nikon glass collection, it was such a cheap grab, and such a great piece of history. I've shown side by side photo's I've taken with a Nikon Df, KP, Z50, the Lx100II which all are excellent camera bodies, and people can't tell the difference.
I agree, I bought a Canon 40D, a dinosaur, and I love it. My favorite camera tech just happened to have it.

I am still using my Nikon D3000. 11 years and still working strong. Love the 10MP CCD sensor on it. Can't sell it. So many beautiful images from it.
When I started watching Mattias' videos I had an a6000, and was a highschooler taking pictures because I found it fun. Now I'm in one of the most competitive photography programmes in the country and have thousands of dollars worth of gear. And only now do I realise the things Mattias have kept saying. I felt I was limited by my a6000, and in a way I have because it wasn't smart or fast enough to compensate for my relative lack of skills, but now, I've been so used to shooting full manual cameras like the M3 I feel slowed down by digital cameras trying to be smart, and have gotten some of my favourite shots on a Rollei 35 with a broken meter. A good camera can help a bad photographer to a point, but skill is the real thing that matters here, you can get most shots on most cameras if you know how to do it.
Thanks Mattias. You are a rare spot in the world today. Everyone is being crazy about the latest and greatest. Sometime I feel I "need" something (a new laptop, a new camera, a new smartphone, a better car, etc), then I wait for a month or so and the feel disappear, my laptop works ok, my smartphone too, my car cover my transportation needs cheaply, etc. If I buy a new camera i try for cheap, used camera. Now I want to sell my compacts cameras and start with interchangeable lens systems, maybe a M4/3 or Canon M / EF-S. There are A LOT of cheap cameras and lenses now in my city, a $100 Olympus EPL6, a $300 NEW Canon T100 / 4000D with two lenses bundle, a $80 Panasonic GF3, a $120 Canon M100, etc. For me there is no reason to spend more if you are not a professional or a hardcore amateur.

I love that a video like this is debuting alongside the flood of Sony A7IV reviews coming out declaring it the "best camera evar", etc. For those of us who just want to take pictures, there are so many great options out there. I really appreciate you bringing up the environment - I think about that every year when a new line of smart phones is released and I imagine all the people who just throw their old one in the trash instead of returning it to the manufacturer to be recycled.

Excellent video! I am frequently asked what system I use to photograph hummingbirds, and when I tell them, their typical answer is that they can’t afford that. My reply is to tell them that I started with a Canon t3i, and it took great photos, and that it would be a great system to start with. The camera is just a tool, and can be used properly to make great images, but those images are made in the shooter’s mind, before the shot is taken. The tool is secondary!
Good advice. A t3i worked for me for years. And if it was all I had I would still be able to take on pretty much any gig.

We have sold our house and have been getting rid of decades of crap that I’ve kept a hold of “just in case”. I just threw out a small box of CF cards from my first few Canon DSLRs. I didn’t have the 300, but I had a Rebel and then the sweet 40D. I did have the 28mm prime that was quite sharp. I sold that lens years ago though.
Your point is spot on (I realize you have to keep restating it). The gear doesn’t matter. The most important gear is the behind the view finder.
I just bought a Ricoh GRD1 from 2006 And I agree 100% with the statement. You can get a camera and a lens for about $150 and it will last you years

So true. I bought my grand daughter a Pentax K10d with the kit zoom for $40. Beautiful image rendering from that old sensor. She loves it and now can go on photo walks with me.

I purchased this camera (Canon Digital Rebel) when it debuted (cost me $999 with kit lens) and I'm surprised when I go though my archives and see the colorful images it helped me create. Great choice and a great video!
I remember back then it was a big deal when I got my Olympus E-300 with 2 kit lenses for $999. It’s old and slow now (back then it was new and slow) but it still takes beautiful pictures.
You are a pure photografic non tech wizard. An absolut joy to see. I'm on my K-70, and a K-5-ii for the panzar build, and last an EoS M3 with EVF (just becuse its better then any online stress tech heads say's it is, and it looks cool with the EVF and, yes its very very inexpensive 2nd hand. With an adapter, there some really good optics. I do not really understand, this rally for Auto focus speed. Is racing cars, and running älgs and kids all?
Canon 350D with nifty fifty was my first "real" camera. Reviewing my old photos, I am still in love with it's colors and how sharp the pictures are, even with "just" 8.2 megapixel. And with the Digic II precessor, Canon adressed the long waiting time that 300D and Canon D30/ D60 and 10D had. Canon 350D and 20D/30D are excelent begginer cameras with a lot of use, even today.
That was my first camera as well and it still sits on my shelf. I remember saving for so long in order to buy the kit.
And the 40D which I love.
I shot thousands of photos with that camera. I just sold it last year. And 8.2 was plenty of resolution for large prints.
Out of the thousands of photography channels here, you're the most sensible one. You always give practical advise, and the images you take are inspiring. Thank you!

I work in a camera store and I am always recommending used gear to my customers, strongly agree with all of your points here!

Bought mine in college as well. A shame I didn’t keep it until my interest in photography really took off.
I think the marketing of cameras has been complete nonsense for a long period of time, because the designation is all about the pricepoint and not the actual capabilities of the camera. A camera like the Canon 6D mark II would be branded ”enthusiast” or ”hobbyist” due to the pricepoint, when if it had been released ten years prior it would have been considered professional and top of the line. In short, great technology has become more accessible, but that doesn’t make it less great really.

Mattias! I'm freaking loving you today! Past week I purchased a "broken" Canon 450d. I wanted a pair of old basic EF lenses for my M100 that some guy was selling in Facebook marketplace, and he gave me the 450d camera with the lenses, all for 80usd. The camera wasn't able to read or even detect SD cards. With some cleaning then voilà, the camera works perfectly. The guy gave me two 128gb cards with the camera, one of them inside the camera. But the 450d read only up to 32gb cards. The guy was trying the wrong kind of SD, and maybe never has cleaned the SD slot. Then, i was all the morning using the 450d. I never before has used a DSLR, and the autofocus is very good! The optical viewfinder feels better, and has been a very funny photography morning. I'm even thinking about getting others small cheap Canon APSC DSLRs. It's kind of adictive. I can only shoot fast 3 RAW then i have to wait the buffer. Even the basic mirrorless like the M100 is faster. But the feeling is different. So, I remembered your video and I think I understand better and better your attitude and feeling. I will keep the M100, because the size and video capabilities. But I think I will take the 450d for photography.

I found the same camera in a thrift store for 5 dlls, no lens nor battery. I added a fresh battery and a lens and it was in great working condition

My first DSLR was a Canon D350 it cost a lot at the time and was a wonderful little thing - never let me down, I really love your attitude - it's never about the camera.
Meanwhile other youtubers: "I have sony A7r4 but I must buy sony A74 for this one feature.. Blah blah blah"..

This week I bought an Olympus XZ-10, I still have tears in my eyes. It was $60, it has a 24mm equivalent 1.8 with an aperture ring, ND filter, it's very portable, built from all metal, and has IBIS.
What's not to like?
Excellent point, Mattias! Gear does not matter, just get any 📷 that inspired you to 📸. However, for most of us mere human, a good 📷 does gives an illusion of grandeur. Mattias, I suspect if you were given a non working 📷, your photographs would be much more better than most of us with a premium 📷. 😂 I have more 📷s(40+ 🙄) than I have 💵 or common sense! I enjoy 📸 with them all. For each provide me with a different experience & IQ rendering. I would say, no one brand, megapixels, format of 📷 is better than another. As you emphasized: get to know your 📷 & enjoy 📸 for the sake of the 📸 experience. Thank you for a reality slap in the face, Mattias. ✌🏼& 📸
Loved this. Still have my original camera in the closet, which is the Canon XTi, which is the model after this one. Served me well for many years before moving on. I'm currently exploring the Fuji ecosystem (thanks to your videos) but I still have a softspot for that old DSLR. 10mp sensor isn't too bad.

Ps. If you care to take the time, you can dissolve and remove the nasty grip "rubber" with alcohol. Do it all the time with the vintage gear I find :)

Acetone works too, and faster than alcohol, but you have to be careful to not damage the plastic or paint

Still have Sony NEX-5N (OK not DSLR, but hey...) from my late relative in the closet. Got it used from time to time for some specific job.
Last used a few months ago for slide duplication work (with manual Nikkor macro lens). The result was still very stunning. Hence no reason to part with it, period.
My first digital camera, in 1996, was a 1 megapixel Kodak that cost $1,500. No one I knew or met had even heard of a digital camera, so it was quite the novelty. I still have the photos. Man, are they bad! But it was loads of fun!
My first camera that got me into photography was Olympus OMD E10M2, upgraded to Fuji XT2, and then bought X-pro 1 and noticed, "hey my skills have improved, so that with these older not so "pro" cameras I can achieve the results I want. Would you look at that", yet there is much to be improved on, and that's fun. Also, used "pro" cameras are way more fun to buy and use when they are "old".
@Mattias Burling ... I've still got one or two 300d bodies that I bought on Ebay for the princely sum of £9 each + £4 for new back up batteries. I recently gave away another Ebay bargain to someone starting out. My favourite old digital is the Canon 10d.... built like a tank, and easy to use, just like my Canon 5d (from new, and still used) .... Fun to use.
I also picked up a spotless Olympus EP1 for £75 and teamed it up with a 7artisans 25mm f1.8 for another £55.
I love working with these cameras even if they have restrictions.
Great vid Mattias. Kudos. As my fav Robin Wong rightly says "any camera is a good camera". I shoot Olympus and have an E-1. I love the Kodak CCD sensor aimed at giving a Kodachrome look ROOC. The 5.5 megapixels are fine for most of my shooting. If someone needs to crop a lot they really need to learn how to frame better. While I will always love Oly color, Canon color is my second fav. Beautiful shots.
I got back into photography with a used Nikon d7000, fairly cheap because it's "only" 16mp. I also get af with those afd lenses I stubbornly held on to.
Hej Mattias! Thanks for an enjoyable and enlighting video! I agree fully with you. I still use and enjoy my Nikon D40 (6 MP) once in a while and will never sell it although I have more recent models (including mirrorless).
Mattias, I bought a second hand D50 and was accidentally sent a Sigma 28-300 zoom by a company because the they m?thought many of the bargain stuff I bought from them might not be 100% working lol. As it happens I am waiting for the 35mm films to be finished so I can see what I got from other old equipment..I have a Leica R5 for about $100 which I found from another store. Anyhow the Nikon produces decent photos for €45, and I guess I'll learn how to use video on my Pentax K 50 slowly. But I confess my Panasonic Lumix TZ6 takes good photos for a camera from 2008, as does my Pentax K200D from the same era. However I was shocked to see photos from my Fuji Finepix A303 that has a very poor battery life with 2 AA Alkaline batteries, and hard to get XD cards, which could be seen on a 24 inch monitor with very little distortion and good colours.
Enjoyable video Mattias, chasing the latest bauble with auto whatnot and WhizzBang is not the same as learning to take careful and well balanced pictures
I used the 700D for corporate shoots and studio shots for 3 years, and recently upgraded to the M50. Now i'm treating my 700D as my streets / film camera; all jpeg, b&w and the screen flipped to itself :)
oh and of course with a manual lens (in my case a yongnuo cheapo plastic fantastic that i broken the autofocus motors off haha)

The 700d is actually a really good camera! It’s what I started out with. Kinda wish i still had it.
Better gear will make a "GOOD" photographer better and a "POOR" photographer poorer
I need to thank you a lot for helping to put an end to gear snobbery, unless you shoot professional you never need the latest piece of gear, photography is all about the beauty of light, not 20 FPS continous shooting, it never helps that the camera market is overlapped on the consumer electronics market, and tech enthusiasts can be just as snobbish.
My newest piece of gear is 6 years old, yet i manage to produce beautiful photos using gear that is even older, cameras have become much of a show off item and less of an instrument for making art, buying a higher end camera won't help you if you can't take good photos, to justify a camera upgrade you need to ask yourself some very technical questions about how the gear may be limiting you, i'm a DSLR user, there's only a few trivial things about DSLRs that limit my photography (e.g not being able to safely use some vintage lenses) as such there isn't a justification to start using mirrorless, especially at the price the gear is currently at, i blame sony for starting that bandwagon.
When talking about gear i always like to include this famous Charlie Chaplin qoute "We have developed speed, but have shut ourselves in, machinery that gives abundance has left us in want" this applies all too much to photography, most people who call themselves photographers spend more time obsessing about the very latest high end gear instead of actually using what you already have to make art, with increasing climate conciousness you have to realize that there's about 20 years worth of digital cameras that aren't being used, that are going to e-waste, by buying used and not new you're also getting the best price for the gear due to deprecciation, the same applies to cars.
When buying digicams as old as the 300D you had though, you do need to be careful of electrical problems, i had a D60 that had a bad sensor, i've even seen 5D II's with the same problem, around this time there was a massive batch of faulty electronics and it affected literally everything including cameras, the rubber used also suffers from the famous ferrari problem, i have a few cameras like it, normally the degredation starts with the rubber turning white, at this stage it's still savable but once it starts "melting" it's basically gone, it was a massive problem with consumer electronics and car dashboards (looking at you ferrari) just be lucky your rubber port protectors are still good, they go hard and basically shatter most of the time, i guess it all depends on how it was stored.
I watch this video every now and then. It's like therapy for me.
This video help me to take decisions about my purchases in general, not only photo gear.
I just discovered you, youtube brought me your video after another one from the La Palma Volcano (nothing to do one with the other) LOL, but just wanted to appreciate your work, and ideas, in fact , my now quite old (compared to the newer ones) canon 5d sr, has almost stopped working, and I can't find something that for my birding photography, where I crop in quite a lot, gives me the color rendition, and the sweet spot of using a tamron 150.600 and be able to crop in without loosing quality. I was in fact thinking of getting another of those cameras. Hubby said, hey get a newer one, but with the prices and having to get new lenses? Hmmm I don't like the idea.... SO , thank you very much for this lovely and emotional video. I wish you all the best , from Uruguay to wherever you are in the world!

It's probably cheaper than buying a film camera, two rolls and having it developed (and scanned). Which is a bit sad. But both will be a fun experience if you enjoy photography

This was one of the first DSLR's that I tried after getting into photography around age 17. I can still remember it, one of my friends had one with a kit lens. I was mesmerised compared to my lumix compact bridge camera (that was still okay).
And I want to thank you again for being you. Most people are just hyped about the latest and greatest, your voice is a breath of fresh air. Even these past days like everyone could only talk about a7 IV just to get their views up etc.... it is very toxic to me. As for most of us photography is an expensive hobby, it is just makes me more frustrating of the new stuff that I can not afford. But I am trying to keep me heart and motivations clear and learning to be contempt and realistic in fighting my gear aqusion syndrome. I am really trying buy used older stuff that work for me and won't break my budget. :) I am also a firm believer of using vintage glasses as much as possible. It fills me with so much joy and thankfullness when I use my father's old russian lenses that he used for so many things (he was very accomplished amatuer photographer in our area back in the day, he did quite few payed gigs, was reparing cameras for people etc). It gives a sentimental connection a feeling of "this is his legacy" that you will never get buying new pricey lenses.....It is like I am resurrecting this lenses that were gathering dust and using them again for good things :)
You also inspire me to do videos like yours (in my own language) where I buy old cameras and make reviews about it for all the folks and young people who want to get more into photography etc but cannot afford expensive stuff....

Thank you so much for this video - I have answered the questions "what should I buy" the same way, basically since 2002. (None of the major brands made a "bad" camera...)
And I still like to take my (also 20+ years old) DSLR out with me, because it's lightweight, doesn't make me cringe, if it gets another ding in the shell, and still produces great images (it did so 2002 and the image quality of the camera has not gotten worse since...)

Ahhh 😌 The 300D was my first DSLR I owned (replacing a Canon G5 fixed lens, my first digital camera. That in turn had replaced my Canon 300 film SLR). The biggest improvement I saw was the when I eventually replaced the kit zoom with a Tamron zoom, and Canon 85mm. I eventually upgraded to a 450D, and looking back subjectively it wasn’t a big improvement. The lens and my own experiences was where the improvements came from.

I used my 450D and 600D for years before going full frame. My 450D I gave to somebody who wanted to get into photography. The 600D I still use regularly and is my favourite going about camera. What you say is very true but a lot of people take a lot of convincing. They keep upgrading expecting something to happen.
Well said. I still sue my little Olympus EPL-1 from time time. Superb camera then and even now. It’s good to go back to where you started. It helps to keep you grounded.

You're 100% right about the camera not being as important, but, at a certain point, I feel like the editing can make an image from an old camera much better than, say, a straight out of camera jpeg. I get the feeling that the 2 things we should recommend anyone who wants to get into photography is: 1- Learn all you can about composition 2- Learn how to edit those raw files
I mean, you are kind of the best example of it. You can take any photo from any camera, and you can edit those files to have your "look and feel" (which I am a big fan of).
I bought a Fujifilm S3Pro with damaged but functional Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 for 45€. It´s really great!
Another point with older gear. Some times you get really nice glass included.
Awesome video! :-) By the way, you can make that soggy rubber grip far less yucky by attacking it with a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, loads of old rags (or socks) and some elbow grease. It will never be what it was when it was brand new, but you can get rid of the semi liquid rubber layer. Soak a rag with the alcohol and rub-a-dub-dub! Thanks again for this video, I get a lot of confirmation bias from it - I bought a number of old Panasonic M43 cameras ranging from the G3 to the GX1. All were excellent.
You can clean the fake rubber with isoprpyl+ethyl alcohol and acloth..
I have a T3i, and it's still perfect for what I need it for.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter It was the first with the flippy screen. And it has a secret feature - it has an EFCS when in live mode or tethered, which eliminates shutter shock for my high magnification use-case.
Thank you Mattias, I agree with you, picture quality has less to do with the camera when compared to the photographer, handling, settings( aperture, shutter speed, WB etc..). My 13 years old Canon 40D captures photos that are very comparable to full frame cameras of the latest generations and I rely on it as a backup camera to my smartphone, it takes unbelievable high quality and decent dynamic range when settings are properly adjusted, I myself don't find any reason to upgrade.

What I hate about the latest phones in particular is that they do the thinking for you. Old cameras and manual modes in new cameras mean that it's still you who gets to take most of the credit for a great shot. In fact, there is often something aesthetically pleasing about the imperfection an old camera/lens gives you. Perhaps it's the imperfections that give some images a more human quality.

Photographers of the old days have created some of the most memorable photographs of all time using a very limiting camera by today's standard. A high spec camera won't help if your vision is out of focus.
this is great! such nice tonality out of these old sensors. limiting it to ILC avoids some of the old digis that really don’t hold up (there are a few). and now with the machine-learning up rezzing solutions like photoshop super resolution Enhance and of course topaz… even the small megapixels shouldn’t stop you from getting a reasonably large print, if not gallery quality

Got an old Sony compact, 4.1 MP, with a Zeiss lens, still works. It was $850 new in it's day. Even have the lens extender, takes pictures like being in a tunnel with it on. Has a card reader, but only is supported with Windows XP. Biggest memory card was like 128 MB, good for about 40 HD pictures. Does video, you can imagine. Then again, I have an old Sony Cyber-shot pocket camera, 14 MP. It takes pretty crappy pictures.
I can tell you had fun with these captures. Beautiful narrative! Loved my 3ti (It had limitations, but that's fun and your job to solve them as a photographer).
I'd love to see you look at a Sony Alpha DSLR (remember Sony store's 😅, I tried one there and it seemed nice).
I probably will try the A-mount at some point :)

I had a Canon D30 before getting this first digital rebel. The autofocus wasn't great and it didn't have many pixels but most of the photos came out looking great. I traded it to a friend and it eventually failed, but it served us well.

I bought an old sony point and shoot, and converted it to infrared (removed the ir filter) I'm enjoying it so far
IR photography is a lot of fun.
Love it. I used to be the person to go after the latest and greatest tech, but it is so easy to waste money that way. That being said, I bought a used D3 with a high shutter count, and it is easily one of the best camera purchases so far. Keep up the good work.
I'm always a bit depressed about the obsession with the latest kit. I use some very old cameras and you know what? They're fine for most things.
I'll add my own story to this. I first got into photography with a Kodak point and shoot digital camera that was probably "out of date" when I got it in 2007 and got some really cool photos out of it (even won an award at the local county fair with one of them). I ended up getting a Nikon D40 with the kit lens as a birthday present and shot on that for years (unfortunately I showed up to a school event with that camera and was forced into the role of school photographer which ended up killing my passion). When I did get back into photography recently I bought an XT-1, and I haven't really felt like I've hit the limits of that camera to need an upgrade. (I admittedly do find the control dials of the XT-1 make it a more fun shooter than the D40, and I have primes for it which I've come to discover I like shooting more than zooms which is all I had (kit + another cheapo zoom) for the D40.)
I still use my D40. Actually, it's my only DSLR camera. I've never really felt the urge to replace it with a newer model. The D40 does well everything I want from it. Perhaps a newer camera will give me better images, but then only marginally better.
@@rookmaster7502 admittedly I thought about using the D40 again instead of buying a new camera (though it was several states away at my parent's and one of my sisters may have had it). But I'd be lying if I don't have some negative sentiment towards it, a lot of that is because I never felt I could get a good photo with it. But thinking back I do have some photos from it I'm really proud of. The problem is that because of being forced to be the yearbook photographer most of my photography was event work, which I loathe and therefore never got better at. So that's most of my memories with that camera is experiencing high school behind a camera lens. Once again passion really is more important than gear (though experience and knowledge are helpful too).
Hey Mattias!! Do you know any camera that can autofocus after programming a timer to take a photo? I currently have a Canon T2i or 550D that takes really good quality photos for my needs, what's going on is that I do modeling and i have to constantly take photos of me or my face, and it is hard as theres no one that can take the pictures for me, obviously I do it myself with the self timer option, but I have to set the focus on every shot and it's really time consuming and exhausting as i have to be really creative to just focus it everytime!!!!
You nailed it once again. The person behind the camera is the main thing. The camera is the tool. And as you showed us again, what you need is...the sense, feeling, patience, experience, love. Not Megapixels. Always a joy to see your Videos!

Mattia, could you help, I have a question about my Bolex D16. I know you've used one before. I use vintage c mount lenses. Two in particular, an Angeneuix 5.9mm f1.8 and a newly aquired Angeneuix 9mm f1.8, have a different flange focal distance. I have to unscrew them a little to get my focus right. Of course, there unsecure and jiggle, and attempting to adjust focus results in a terrible image capture. Did I buy the "wrong kind" of C mount lenses? Makes it difficult choosing lenses. I can't find a robust discussion online. Thank you for any help.
I had a Canon 350d. Brilliant camera. I still have the Canon 550d that I replaced it with in 2010. The 550d still gets used most weeks.
Nice!!! My first camera was the 350D from 2008. I got it used on craigslist for $130, came with the 18-55 and the nifty fifty! It got stolen from me in 2018, otherwise i would still have it. I miss the moments, was enough for me and got me hooked to photography.
This is so true - this was my first DSLR (bought secondhand) and I loved using it. I was reviewing the photos I took in Tangiers back in 2008 and they really surprised me with their quality. I also now have the 450D (as well as the 90D, the GRlll and "bought just last night" the Pentax KP). I might still have the 300D somewhere, although I have a feeling I left it behind in a house move... Watching this video has made me realise I have fallen into the trap of thinking I need to buy more/newer/better etc and that that just is not the case.
I've taken some really great photos with a Mavica. From the 0.9 megapixel to the 2.1 megapixel. Same with a Lubitel and/or Brownie.
I have the 24mm EFS lens that I bought a while ago, but it won't fit the 6D. So I bought a Canon T3i for $200 online. I used to have the T2i, both are excellent cameras. I will use the T3i as a backup for my 6D when I go shooting. Image quality quite amazing at 18mp. Still don't understand why so many people buy the latest and greatest, and they don't even know how to use all the features of those new cameras.
I have a friend who bought the Nikon Z5 and she only takes selfies and family pictures. I borrowed it for a week, was blown away with the fast focusing and sharpness of the images. I would buy one but can't see doing it since my Canon 6D has nearly the same low light performance and is full frame as well.
So yes, I agree with you. So many good and affordable cameras out there that will make amazing images (based on the skill of the photographer) without costing an arm and a leg.

One of the last cameras I bought was a Canon EOS 5D MkIi with a shutter count of just 996. In mint, just used in the studio as a reserve camera. I've got it for å nice price.

Bought a Samsung NX2000 with Lens and Card for 40 Euro two weeks ago. Already knew the system and knew that I'd get a great sensor and a good lens. Didn't expect to find a camera that finally getting my wife interested in photography, thanks to it's great touchscreen interface.
This is why l love your channel. You're the one who convinced me to dig in the world of used oldie photography gears. Now I miss my D300. Running X100S since I mostly do street. But I still want an interchangeable lens camera to play with other things I want to shoot.

Great philosophy ! I suppose another approach is to buy a new camera within your budget whose features appeal to you and then keep it until there is a real specific reason to get a different model. My main camera (Sony A6300) which I bought years ago suits me fine and I feel no "pull" to get a newer model or to move to full frame. I also have an Olympus EM 5 II with a weather resistant zoom lens for travel and an Olympus Tough TG 6 to be a combo pocketable camera for casual shots and for underwater pics when on a beach vacation. Cameras in the past 10 years are so good except in really extreme conditions it is hard to tell which camera was used just by looking at the picture (no pixel peeping) ! They all beat my old Kodak Brownie and instamatic (though I had loads of fun with those a half century ago :-) ) No need to jump on the automatic upgrade train .... unless you make a living from photography.
Love my Pentax K100D, I found it for about 50 usd, and it help me to slow down and enojoy photography in another way.
The colors from the sensors of that era also have a magic feeling in them
Older Pentax cameras are a joy to use.
