I totally understand what you said about motivation to shoot. I have a gh5s and it's an absolute beast in terms of filmmaking but I just don't have the energy to use it as much as I would want to. Im going to sell it and get something that suits my needs and give me that feeling again, even if it's a massive downgrade in terms of quality.
hi Teo, what an amazing video! and videos you produce. I am travelling to NY and need to decide to pick between a pentax k1000 vs minolta himatic 9? about 100usd each.. which one would you pick? and why.
What do you think of the Lumix LX100/LX100 II, compared to the GX80? And do you know anything about compact cameras like the LX100 shooting 4K video at 60 frames?
Have you also tried a smaller lens on your a7iii? paired with a pancake 35mm f2.8 it gets a whole lot smaller then compared to a zoom! But nevertheless that gx seems to be a great camera :)
ive considered grabbing a newer mirrorless slr but the prices are insane and the bulk makes me not wanna use one, grabbed a used sony a6000 and honestly the small crop sensor form factor makes it a no brainer. ive shot some amazing panoramics with it stitching in photoshop and honestly it goes with me everywhere
That is a nice camera. It came out ~ the same time as the GX85. Very good auto focus. Very wide lens selection. I’ve seen this body at $300. I’m not interested in Sony cameras but it is an excellent camera. Hope you enjoy using it. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
The video is okay, but not sufficient for the quality I require for my work, so I don’t really use it. I used to though, but I‘m happy to have been able to upgrade to the Sony because it‘s dynamic range is a fair bit better especially with the wide choice of profiles (I shoot in HLG2). Also a big minus for the Lumix is that the footage looks quite over-sharpened, which some might not mind, but I can’t stand it😅 On the other hand the image stabilisation is insanely good which for video can be quite handy.
@@teocrawford Thank you so much, that’s very helpful. I’ve read about that over sharpening and seen examples of some “recipes” that help solve that issue.
That’s strange, because I can usually find it for about 400🤔 I didn’t think that the price could vary so strongly depending on your location. And 400 is really cheap for a camera with the capabilities of the GX80. You‘re not going to find a bloody camera that’s any good for 80 bucks. But the cameras that camera manufacturers try to sell us nowadays are in the 1000-2000 bucks range, so considering that, 400 is a steal! That is the point I‘m trying to make here🙌🏼✨
Sure 600$ bei itself is a lot HOWEVER not when it comes to cameras. It’s not really out of touch when you consider that good cameras can cost multiple thousands of dollars. I‘d say anything under 800 is considerable as a „cheap“ camera. Anything under 400 is a „budget“ camera. It’s the same way cheap Pianos are 800$ and that is just the way it is. You can not expect high quality in that price range but it’s enough. Nothing out of touch with that. It alway depends on what it is about.
i actually hate shooting on cameras with big lenses because i feel awkward pulling it out around strangers + they also freeze up because its so unnatural
I ended up getting the Lumix GX85 with the 20mm lens after seeing the Japan series, and I noticed I feel more encouraged to shoot photos more casually. And I'll definetly be taking this camera if i do go to Japan in November!
@@HungTran-wf3gu You just keep practicing. Finding your style isn't fast and easy. What helps me is to get creative and find new angles and new subjects I haven't tried before. You can learn about how to control the camera's settings but those only take you so far in taking a picture. Just remember to have fun in the process
I love how you can say the unspoken words of my love towards photography. Your ways of expressing yourself towards photographs making me fall even more into taking photos❤
Man, the quality of these videos is astonishing! I can‘t get enough of your calming and informative style of telling your storys and you inspire me to grab my camera and go out capture some moments each time again! Thank you!
You were a big part of me deciding to get this exact set-up and I never regretted it. Such a special combo. And it clearly inspires you because your photos with it are some of your best work imo. The big companies don't want people to know it but no, you don't need the latest gear to enjoy photography. In the contrary I would say. I have been shooting with a Nikon D60 and a 35mm 1.8 and I don't even know how old it is but if I didn't like cameras as much as I like ohitography I could very well just shoot with this combo or the GX80/20mm1.7 and be perfectly happy. Btw, if you use lightroom I highly encourage you to use the new denoise funstion. It's ofc not perfect but it makes photos that would have been unusable at high iso completely clean and even printable. There is no more excuse now to not use old gear (if you use lightroom).
I still have my GX80 and it's been superb for my hikes through Japan - nothing wrong with it even today! Paired with some superb Micro Four Thirds lenses (shout out to the Olympus 12-40 Pro, and the Olympus 17mm), the output still is amazing.
Lol at all the Japanese people seriously not pleased with you taking shots of them. Culturally, privacy is a really big thing for most Japanese people. Just thought I'd let you know in case you look over the photos of people again. 5:51
As a half Japanese I know to be very careful in Japan when it comes to my behaviour in public. The photo you're pointing out didn't really annoy anyone, I think you're misinterpreting the facial expressions. The goal in street photography is to capture the candid looks of people, which is exactly what happened in this shot. They aren't all smiley obviously because that's not what they do (although I have had that too haha). Also I don't know how you imagine that the shot was taken, but this was literally a split second that they barely noticed. Something flashed and they see this guy with a camera, but we're just walking by each other and no one really cares. I can only see one guy who you might be referring to who is looking straight at me with the classic tired resting face that most people in Japan have. But thanks for letting me know, it is something I'm always careful with no matter where :)
@@teocrawford Hi Teo, thanks for the reply, I honestly wasn't expecting one. I get the goal of street photography. But at the same time, I am concerned slightly because in almost all Japanese TV media (photography/video) that captures people's faces in the background or such, the faces are all blurred for anonymity. The people who have agreed to be in the shot usually don't have their faces blurred. I think I just wanted to point out that even if it is called street photography not everyone wants to have their face in a video that has more than half a million views without permission. Well, you know, that's just like uh, my opinion, man. 5:56 The girls are looking right into the camera too. Maybe I am misinterpreting. I don't know, just be careful :) I recommend looking up the following video and just being careful with a few of the laws. Street Photography Laws in Japan: American lawyer explains Hope you have a nice day!
@@AW_Designs Yes, absolutely, I'm sorry if the answer came across like I'm not accepting of your opinion - I appreciate it fully. I know that street photography can be tricky in this sense - if I'm not mistaken the law in Korea really makes it hard. As far as I know Japan isn't as strict, however also not as open as Germany for example. Thank you for pointing to the video! Personally I act in life in general according to the principle of "I act how I'd want others to act". So obviously I don't want someone pointing a camera into my home's window, because that is an invasion of privacy. However anyone walking around in the city is in a public space that does not permit the expectation of privacy and hence I wouldn't mind being photographed as long as the photograph doesn't in some way deform me. And so when I shoot, I behave accordingly. Also I see the documentation of people and a place in their candid way as a very important part of history and so put simply I just do not think it is wrong. However if someone sees me and asks me to not publish or even delete the photo I of course respect that. This all makes it a really tricky thing for me and I think I just wanted to let you know that this is not something that I haven't thought through. My conclusion has obviously led to me keeping the photos in the video. Ohh also concerning the women at 5:56 - yes, they looked at me after the shot and we nodded to each other politely and passed by each other. That didn't give me the impression that they felt intruded by me. Sorry for all the text haha - I just sometimes feel the urge to make clear that I do all this with thought and care for the concerns. Have a lovely day too! :)
@@teocrawford No worries my friend. Your viewpoint is very interesting especially regarding a historical point of view. I totally accept it. And you make a fair point about being in a public space too. There's much to consider on my end too :)
I got my Panasonic Lumix GX85 back in 2017 I bought it with the kit lens, the Lumix 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 and the original Leica 25mm F1.4 (best lens I've ever owned). I love this camera it is without any doubts the camera I take with me to do everything and that's the most important as you said in your video "You can't beat someone that is having fun" I'll keep having fun with my little Panasonic Lumix GX85
I really felt that "resistance" term you used. Right now it's been ages since I hadn't have fun with my camera because of the resistance to take easy photos. You opened my eyes ❤
I got my gx85 as a travel filmmaking camera about two years ago, and it's been an absolute joy to use. I love taking it on hikes and just getting nice shots. It sits right next to me on my desk just so I feel the urge to pick it up. I have a full cinema camera kit, but I still find myself reaching for it because I love its size and its limitations. I've shot multiple short films on it now, and the look has never disappointed me. It really is a perfect second camera.
I'm pretty sure you've sold quite a few GX80s at this point. I also got one earlier this year in large parts thanks to your videos. MPB should have sponsored this video ;)
Feel the same way about my XT-30ii, I've recently bought a 27mm prime from ttartisan and I love it so much, such a lightweight and fun packet to use Can't wait to use it in Japan in November
What camera should I buy as my first? I am a kid and I saved up a year or 2 with 200 usd. I want to take photos of cars (needs fast shutter speed). I am willing to purchase it used as well.
Still used my two GX9 even after 4 years of purchase and going around the world. IBIS and fun factor of GX80 is still better than most of 2023 cameras available today.
That's right, it's all about feelings. That's why the Leica M is the king of this class. Since it is too expensive and not affordable for most people, I bought the GX9, which is a slight upgrade to the GX80. It has a slightly better dynamic range and a 20 megapixel sensor. Since I got this camera, my full frame camera has been put away in the closet. :))
There is absolutely nothing terrible about the Panasonic GX85. It's a superb little camera, capable of taking beautiful images with fairly inexpensive lenses. It's small, inconspicuous, light and can be stashed in a bag or large jacket pocket when necessary. The mechanical shutter has a very soft but crisp sound, and it has the option for an electronic shutter, too. In body stabilization, 4k video, lovely colours, what's not to like?
Hi. This is the very first video of yours that I have come across, and I have to say I am amazed by the quality of your video. I really like the look and color grading done on the scenes, especially the shots in the grass field with lots of green and yellow tones. I could literally feel the warmth of the scene as I watched the video. Really amazing work, keep it up.
I had this camera before it was stolen. I replaced it with a GX9. I have no problem shooting at 800iso. No worries, of course, I don't pixel peep nor do I print. I think that if you have to look for noise, you're always going to find it. So, I don't look, just enjoy.
Ok, I just discovered this channel and believe I have been hypnotized by Teo’s beautiful voice, accent and presentation such that he could take a photo of a blank wall and I would swoon over it. Wonderful talent.
It's such a shame that photography is such an expensive hobby. Maybe not the most expensive, but this "cheap" camera still costs 5000kr. I don't have the money for that (yet). I would love to get a good camera in the future. But till then, I'll just have to dream on.
calling a camera from 2016 'ancient' is part of the problem we have today. I migrated systems and upgraded in 2017. I now have 3 of those flagship bodies, and even though the latest ones are 3 generations past mine I see nothing to warrant me upgrading. Shoot what makes you happy, and don't rely on popular opinion to tell you what makes you happy.
calling it "ancient" was a joke actually - I mainly shoot with a camera from the 1980s, but in the digital world 2016 is viewed as ancient, which I was trying to joke on, but I guess it didn't quite come across haha
Oh no, I got what you were saying. But the reason you were making the joke is because so many people either think that way, or have been conditioned to think that way by the market. I've unfortunately left my film days behind me now (too expensive), but I also shot a diverse range of cameras, and even now with my digital stuff I still shoot everything from todays lenses through to some from the 40's/50's/60's. It's actually quite funny really, as since covid the second hand market here has gotten even worse than it was (aus), and now in the last 12 months or so we've had the digicam wave, and both those things have combined to see ANY AND ALL second hand cameras asking and going for ridiculous prices. Every time one of these videos goes up I have a search for the camera in question, and the "cheap" finds that people say they get for $20-$200 are selling for $600-$1000. The constant race to upgrade to the latest and greatest in the camera world was always a nice liitle thing for people like us who are happy to shoot with older/second hand cameras, but it seems those days are now gone.@@teocrawford
brother. havent watched your vids for a long time. was one of your first subscribers i believe. now youve blown up. you deserve it man. youve made excelent videos that photography people love and non photography people will understand and appreciate the art. go do more brother. merry xmas
You were partly what inspired me to get a GX85! Love your photos and how you can turn something seemingly mundane into something beautiful. Been a photographer for going on 10 years and was a micro four thirds guy for a while and sold everything for full frame when I started leaning heavier into video. I realized very quickly I didn't like the weight of the bodies or lenses when going on personal trips or for EDC. Also found out there was nothing "magical" or "unobtainable" with full frame. Yes shallow dof, blah blah; but a photo is so much more than blurry background. So I decided to go back to this exact setup, GX85+20mm f1.7. I told myself I would by a 12mm or a 15mm at some point but I absolutely love the 20mm, it never comes off. I still have my full frame Panasonic cameras for work but when it's just me and I want something light to throw in my pocket or a small sling pouch, it's the GX85 that comes with me.
This video has been a fresh air in my mind about so many things i have been thinking about my photography the past months... thank you for loving this art as much as you do
7 months ago I was trying to get into photography after years of shooting with my cheap phone. I saw this camera on Amazon and I thought "mmh seems nice and reasonably priced", well at least for how far the reasonably can get ahah. So I searched for some RUclips reviews and you came up as recommended. I subscribed and then bought the gx85. Didnt regret it yet, and don't think I will. Keep it up👍👍👍
400USD used definitely sounds overpriced, more like the normal price for a new one. But even that is much cheaper than higher end digital cameras I guess🤔
Truly loved this same set up and miss it a-lot. Hoping Panasonic makes an updated version just as compact with the new phase detect. I'd grab it for any price point.
I love micro 4/3 cameras. I just got a Lumix Gm1 a few months ago to get back in photography and I love it. I have taken amazing photo with it and the 20mm lens. I like the built-in modes and filters, especially the dynamic monochrome.
The GX80 was a camera I was on the verge of getting! Love MFT and the compact lightness as well as great image quality was just great to see. I ended up with the Olympus EM5 Mk. III because of some other pros it had over the Lumix, but still this camera is a fantastic choice!
Lovely video, very engaging and thought provoking. My current fav camera is my Panasonic Lumix G3 for pretty much all of the same reasons, I believe it shares a very similar if not the same 16mp sensor. Plus it only cost me £45 complete with the 14-42 g vario zoom lens and sunhood. A lot of camera for the price of a family takeaway! 😲😳😁
I can find it used for 400 bucks which is an absolute steal in comparison to what camera brands are trying to sell us and considering what the camera is capable of.
@@teocrawford For $400 you can get a full frame Nikon D610 and for $500 a D800. If you’ve ever shot one of those cameras, you’ll know that they are insane. DSLRs are cheap as fuck these days.
Love my GX80... I got it on a silly discount and cashback deal in 2017, after the rebate I paid only £250 for it and the 12-32mm lens. Very capable little camera indeed. Can I ask what the tan coloured strap with big metal lugs you show in the opening shots is please?
ever since watching your japan street photography series I've been wanting to get my hand on a lumix gx80 now 😅 also super close to 100k!! its gonna happen before the end of 2023 for SURE
The poor man’s Leica! If you’re buying the brand name and the famous red dot, you’ll be paying more for the same lens on a Panasonic Lumix. Good choice! 😊
With regards to your point on the super high ISO capability at 9:59; that high ISO isn't really useful for single shots, but if you're stacking shots using median blending in post, then you can get the benefits of higher shutter speed in low light while keeping low noise. It's the same technique many smartphones use to achieve such low noise in their night modes.
Everything about this video is how i've been feeling for a long time. After many years and many test trials with digicams and even the x100 i finally found the camera sparks that joy and gives me that ease of use and burden-less feeling. I found a deal on the "old" sony rx1rii and that camera has completely resparked my love for photography. I use to shoot a lot with point and shoot film cameras, i would use them as my everyday carry whether i was going out with friends/family or on my commute to work, i would always make sure it would come with me. i would even make room for it in my camera bag on trips or my paid gigs. current film prices had got me looking more into digital point and shoots and long story short i ended up with the rx1rii and now my bigger sony has taken the back seat. its so nice to come across video that really goes into depth explaining that feeling ive been personally experiencing. this has definitely become one of my favorite videos here on youtube that ive watched in a long time, i couldve easily watched this video front to back 10+ times even if it was hours long. so yeah thank you for that :)
I love my GX80. It's very versatile because of its size, but also produces great images. Paired with the Panasonic-Leica 15mm lens it's hard to beat. I also love the Panasonic GM1 with the same lens, that is such a fun combination.
Love this video and camera so much! I was using a 5D mk iii prior to getting the gx85. It was super heavy, and i never wanted to shoot. So I completely understand everything you said in this video. For my business work, i shoot with an R6 mk ii now, which isn’t as heavy, but I still won’t use it for my own photography. It just doesn’t inspire me. For digital it’s got to be the gx85, and for film i carry an olympus om-2n or pentax zoom 60x. It’s just super refreshing to have smaller, easy to use cameras that will still take great photos 📸
I think I would have to disagree on the billboard statement. When the iPhone 6 (i think) came out, they had an ad campaign where they shot actual billboards with it and it was just fine. It was also 15MP. The bigger something is, the farther the appropriate viewing distance is to it. So, if you have a 12MP or 16MP camera, you can do most things perfectly fine with it. The only time it might be negative is when you're viewing them to purposely pick out poor quality. I'd argue, if you told somebody who wasn't a photographer that this was a "professional" camera they wouldn't disagree. It's all about how you look at things.
I don't do that because that is basically joining the races, like people who buy the newest consoles or video cards. to me cheap is what I can afford not some comparision between expensive and even more expensive. But you do you I guess. :) @@teocrawford
I see others commenting on the same. The camera with a 12-32 lens is eq. to $629 at the moment. Which is around $70 more than I paid for my 250D with the kit lens and a 50mm.
10mp is good enough for a billboard. People forget the pro cameras they used in the early 2000s were very low pixel counts and theybwere used for billboards as well. Billboards are seen from very far away, the pixel count doesn't have to be insane. Fine art galleries are a different story though. The biggest thing is just getting out and photographing instead of worrying about gear
I feel the same about the gx80. I don't know what it is, but this camera inspires me to go out and take pictures. It's about the process of taking them and capture memories...and not about pixels and perfection. I always loved the idea of dealing with limitations. I would love to upgrade to the gx9 for the exposure compensation dial... because the rear dial on my gx80 has stopped working. And it's my 2nd one because of this. 😅
Great video as usual! I also have this camera paired with a Leica 25mm. 1.4 which is the sharpest lense I've personally used on any camera. The 1.7 version seems to do the job as well though. You should have mentioned the lack of an anti-aliasing filter on this camera and the fact that it has IBIS. Both contribute to even sharper images depending on the situation.
Teo, I love you and your work! Your videos are so calming and pleasing, your thoughts are brilliant and usually offer a more insightful perspective on things. Your setup reminds me a lot of mine: my main digital camera is an Olympus EM10 mark II paired with a 20mm f1.7 Lumix lens! It was my first ''serious'' camera, I bought it 3 years ago and it gave me some exquisite shots. Lately I've been enojoying the digicam trend, and I got myself a Canon Ixus 70 (the famous sd1000): well, it made me feel and think just as described by you in this video! While tecnically it's a bad and old camera, it actually helped me a lot getting rid of overthinking and made me take more pics! I'd love to hear you talk about digicams as well :) greetings from Rome, if you'll ever come I'd love to meet you!
My choice back then was the olympus om-d e-m10 and a lumix 25mm f1.7 and i never got bored! You described literally the way i feel when i shoot with my camera, i really loved this video!
I'd like to point out that in the last decade or so progress on the digital camera front wasn't made by such huge leaps as it was earlier, meaning a person trying out photography can rely on older second hand models to cover 90% of their needs. Sure higher MP and ISO numbers are great but even having a camera that gives you usable 800ISO is just lovely. And I'd really like to be a guy starting out in this era. Congrats on making it so easy to understand for everyone!
The gx85 is one the best desiged cameras ever made. The weight and size is almost perfect. If the gx85 had newer senor it would be my favourite camera. Only thing I don't like is the aspect ratio of 4:3 so I set it to 3:2 which of course means you are cropping the sensor a bit. I have found using the enhance feature on lightroom helps improve the files

putting (its cheap!) in the title of a video talking about a $600 dollar camera body is the most out of touch thing i think ive seen in a minute lmfao
That is the point I‘m trying to make here🙌🏼✨
Right…
@@teocrawford Agree! I'm going to buy a G80 tommorow for €200 second hand. The GX is similar in price and often slightly cheaper.
@@teocrawfordstill out of touch lol
Sure 600$ bei itself is a lot HOWEVER not when it comes to cameras. It’s not really out of touch when you consider that good cameras can cost multiple thousands of dollars. I‘d say anything under 800 is considerable as a „cheap“ camera. Anything under 400 is a „budget“ camera. It’s the same way cheap Pianos are 800$ and that is just the way it is. You can not expect high quality in that price range but it’s enough. Nothing out of touch with that. It alway depends on what it is about.
Okay but I need a tutorial on that dreamy pastel coloring that you’re doing/the way you edit your photographs and videos! It’s just so good!

Paired with some superb Micro Four Thirds lenses (shout out to the Olympus 12-40 Pro, and the Olympus 17mm), the output still is amazing.
i absolutely love this
Aww thank you Gawx!!❤️
2016 is not so old at all for a camera
You actually inspired me to buy my very own GX80 in July. Its so compact, and I really enjoy using it
Same. Bought my one a few years ago when find out Teo's video series about a shoting day whit GX80. And I'm so fall in love with this camera.
I don't know, just be careful :)
I recommend looking up the following video and just being careful with a few of the laws.
Street Photography Laws in Japan: American lawyer explains
Hope you have a nice day!

We all apreciatte the effort you put into these videos that make them calming, cozy, and inspiring.
Ok p Diddy 😂
The depth you’ve gone in in this video allows me to reflect on my purpose in photography
p.s. the visuals in this video is on par

Your voice is the most soothing and this video is so peaceful ❤

''cheap'' The lowest price I saw was €255😓 Cheap would be a 80 bucks camera. or in my case 15 bucks for the Panasonic Lumix dmct-zs8.
Anything at or below 400€ is certainly a cheap camera😅 You need to compare it to the other newer cameras which are in the 2000+ range🤷🏻♂️
I totally agree.
Absolutely beautiful cinematography. Immediately followed!

Great video, but I don't think I would ever call the Lumix GX7 Mark ii "mediocre."
