I really enjoyed your video--thank you so much! Like you, they are my winter friends on sunny windowsills in Washington, DC. And now I'm just about ready to set them outside--it just froze last night so I'll wait another week or two.
I don't buy them anymore because they are pricey for an annual plant....but....I forgot you can 'house plant them'!! thanks for reminding me. I'm so encouraged, I asked my neighbor to give me hers....she throws them away....every year!!!
I can't find your book , high altitude gardening for the intermountain West, on Amazon. The link from your website goes to a different book. Can you link to it here?
I stop buying geraniums at the garden center because they got to be expensive plants for annuals. After watching your video I feel encouraged to buy some, try your propagation method and see what happens. Thanks for sharing this information.
Geraniums are actually incredibly easy to propagate, don't need the woody part as the video suggests. Cut any branch and let it hang in a bottle / container of water and within a week it'll have roots coming out the nodes. I can easily propagate 10+ plants from one large plant.
@@powermovement247 Yeah garden centres are still closed due to covid (in Toronto). Once they form roots plant in soil and place in a sunny area. I put mine outside last week and temperatures dipped below 10C at night and leaves started turning red on all the geraniums so I've brought them back inside until weather warms up in May. In the fall when it starts getting cold just bring them inside.
@@UnsaltedCashew38 Hi Marty. Thanks that's good to know. How a question for you. Can they survive the garage for winter stotage or do they need to be in side the house for warmth?
@@powermovement247 Unlike dahlias, calla lilly, begonia, gladioli, etc plants, geraniums have no bulbs we can dig up and store in the basement or a dark place for winter. The garage would be very cold to store bulbs as well I think (I don't know where you live but here it goes to -20C to -30C in winter), last year I dug up all the bulbs, boxed and labeled them and placed them in laundry room with lid open to prevent moisture build up. I planted them in early March and all are growing back again. :) Geraniums need warmth (room temperature is fine) and a sunny window. They stop flowering completely when I bring them indoors and only grow foliage. In the Spring like right now they have started flowering again but it's only a fraction of the flowers we get to see in the Summer. Check Walmart for bulbs/tubers, they have the best prices I find.
I planted seeds I bought. I've never had this plant before. I'm in SW Florida zone 10a. Most of them didn't come up. I have 5 trying so hard to grow. I had to put a huge plastic ziplock around them because in the shade they just wilt as if they hate the heat. In their makeshift terrarium they seem happy but so slow. I planted marigold seeds at the same time. The marigolds are getting their 1st flowers. The geraniums finally have 5 tiny leaves. Am I doing something wrong? You give me hope that if I can get them to thrive then I'll have them for decades to come. If these babies make it then I'll propagate them instead of bought seeds.
Help! I rescued a geranium from lowes that was about to be thrown out. I hung it up and a rainstorm got to it and I think it may be overwatered. Any tips? We live in gulf coast Florida and it is super humid out here. Thanks so much
for planting seeds, do I use regular soil, or do I use "seed starting soil"? also, if I can use regular soil, can I use soil that has fertilizer in it?
No, they will not root and neither will any new green growth on the plant. You need to go way down on the stem until you are at the brownish, woody growth, preferable where there is a V in the stem. This will be evident on a plant that is one year old, or older. That is the section most likely to root. I have about an 80% success rate with cuttings like this. I hope that is helpful.

I bring them indoors when weather starts getting cold in late Sept/early Oct then take them out again in May/June.

Very informative. Thank you xx
I always thought they were just an annual. Excited to give your ideas a try!
@Kole Moses Well keep that behavior up and she won't be your girlfriend for long. WTH
Thank you dear🙏
Thankyou. I hope to propagate mine now.

Great tips, they can add up quick $$$
Great info, thanks.
How do you keep the flowers in full bloom without the middle of the flower dying off ?
Thank you.

I've looked up the Maverick Star geranium and it's beautiful! I would love to buy some seeds from you.
I'm new to try this with geraniums but going to try, the only trouble is I live in cold and wet Scotland.
Thank you. I'm curious, did the coral zonal you are showing grown for 35 years in the same pot?

I like to use potting soil, but any loose and porous soil will do. Fertilizer is fine.
