- Hi everyone, i am showing you How to Disassemble Laptop Lenovo IdeaPad 520, i added extra ssd hard disk to Laptop Lenovo Ideapad 520-15IKB, I bought Sata 3 Adapter (NS-A759) and put it into empty cd player place. After placing the ssd, in windows 10 open disk management and define the disk to start to use then you can install windows in this drive. For this SSD upgrade, I used Kingston 480 gb SSD A400, it works quiet well.

This might be a NOOB question, but do you have to format the HDD before placing the SSD in its place and putting the HDD in place of the DVD drive? Would it be possible to move the system from the HDD into SSD after physically installing the hardware in the correct spots?
If you have 2 operation system in your hardrives, windows ask you which one do you want to choose at the beginning. You can clone your hdd to ssd before formatting using 3rd party software. After clone you can open the windows from the ssd and format hdd. It is possible but could be a bit complicated, if you dont know well, i suggest you to format and install new windows, or study well from youtube how to clone. Good luck.

My laptop (same model) comes with a dvd drive. If i just want to open the back panel for cleaning do i need to unscrew the dvd drive as well?
yes you must remove the screw, and you should start to open the panel from the dvd drive hole, it is more easy.

Hello Sir, does Lenovo 520 motherboard support 500gb NVMe M.2 SSD? I want to keep my 1TB HDD along with the SSD. Or do I have to use a caddy in place of the CD Drive, for the SATA SSD?
M.2 SSDs are faster than SATA 2.5" SSDs. But I don't think IdeaPad 520 supports M.2. I too have a IdeaPad 520, and I recently upgraded to WD SATA SSD, and also kept my previous HDD in replacement of DVD drive.
520 does NOT support M.2. It is erroneously mentioned in the manual that 520 supports M.2. I bought a Samsung M.2 ssd for 5k but it did not fit at all

my laptop did not have a dvd player, it was just an empty cover. if you have a dvd player then you need to buy this one; www.amazon.co.uk/ULTRACADDY-Drive-Lenovo-Ideapad-Faceplate/dp/B07956SXMC just remove the cover from the originall dvd and put it to the caddy to make it look better.

Yes i format the old disk, and installed windows to the new ssd. it is much more faster.
Will this method affect the licence of win 10? Currently the win10 is a licensed version(pre-installed). So idk the licence key also.
Did you upgrade the ram? I am using a 16 gb DDR4 clocked at 2400 and it's making my laptop run slower than ever.
I did not upgrade. i do not know exactly why it made your laptop slow, it is strange, original ram is 2133MHz DDR4, maybe because of this?

SSD makes very big difference, really faster.
Check the rank of your ram a 1Rx16 would definitely reduce performance. Also this model supports up to 16gb how did you add a 16gb stick in it??

4gb soldered can not be replaced, there is one slot only and maximum 16 gb, total 20 gb. i dont know the benefit of metal cover.

@@teurjicraftshandmade7400 You are wrong, the max ram is 16GB including the soldered 4GB. So you can only put a 12gb ram to make it 16gb in total. It's not 20 gb.

@@iaseem7 I believe you have mixed up the total max. ram and the max. ram that can be upgraded, 4gb ram is not removeable, the one that can replaced should support Max 16GB, so total are 20GB of Ram. You may also check the series of motherboard, I watch another laptop using same motherboard that upgraded to 16GB

Yes Mohammad, this model support 16 gb ram, plus 4 gb soldered total 20 gb. The original ram is 2133MHz DDR4.
The max ram allowed is 16GB including the soldered 4GB. So you can only put a 12GB ram to make it 16GB in total. It's not 20 GB.

Original RAM is 2133MHz DDR4.
If you install the same or higher frequency RAM the performance will remain at 2133MHz and you won't have any drop in performance.
I preferred the 2666MHz frequency because it was cheaper in my country.

what is your laptop exact model, some has m2 slot + sata. if you have already 1 tb sata hdd in the laptop, you can change it with 1 tb ssd without problem. if you have a doubt just open it to see.

Hi. 1. It does not have M2 SSD slot.
2. i am not sure if i understand your question right. After adding SSD you will have 2 storage. ssd+hdd, doesnt matter which type, or where it is. if you want you can put another ssd.

i have ideapad 520 151kb and from past one month my laptop is running very slow and using memory above 90% more the time.Can u suggest me what to do.I was running windows 10 for more than 1 year and only day before yesterday i have upgraded to windows 11.its very slow.
i suggest you to put a ssd to your laptop and install a clean windows 10. maybe one program makes your memory full, also possible some viruses. if you don't want to format, try to restore your system to a previous restore point if possible. i have not tried win 11, i think it will take some time to make it stabile with further updates.

What is the first thing that I took off and then knocked down, and why did I take it off?
It is the cd Place, first you need to remove this, then you can open the cover more easy. when you remove the cd, you start to remove the cover from the cd hole, hope it is helpfull.

@@eslamahmed8962 sorry i missunderstood. It is cover for the ram(memory) slot, in this model, there is one socket, and under this socket there is 4 gb soldered ram. In future i want to upgrade the ram too, that is why i checked the ram properties. It is 2400mhz, and supported max. 16gb. In total it can be max 20 gb with the soldered one.

I used this one: SSD KINGSTON A400 480GB 2.5 "SATAIII. There 's no M2 slot in this model, some people say there is under wifi card, but it is very easy with adapter in Cd place. Original 1tb HDD was very bad, laptop totaly changed after ssd.

It is possible to put directly, there is no speed difference as i know. I just prefered to put it into the main slot.
